received a call about a domestic disturbance the deputies had no idea what they were walking into that night but it would soon become clear that they were dealing with a dangerous situation I'm Tyler see you later purple so um he's on the other side I don't know that be easier to talk the accused identified as Colin Griffith had allegedly assaulted his mother his grandmother witnessed the incident and corroborated the victim's account contradicting Colin statements to the police Colin was taken into custody but a disturbing detail emerged he threatened to harm himself or his mother if he were sent home concerned about the potential for further violence officers plan to speak with Colin the following morning hello hello hey how you guys doing good he calling H yeah you guys can come on in he's doing standing marches he's not a happy camper right now Colin right yes sir so what's going on man last night me and to a physical location I got arrested for domestic battery but going in front of the judge today have right the public defender and see how that goes okay so what's how is the situation with you and right now are things calmed down are you guys able to get along where are we at no sir it's it's not good um she thinks that I don't she thinks that I'm like psychotic like literally psychopath sociopath something like that I I don't know exactly where she's at she thinks I'm going to kill her her I want to kill her that I want to be of her do you no sir okay I don't want to hurt anyone let alone my mom even despite this is happening but I'm not going to take what I consider abuse when someone's attacking me and how is she attacking you what kind of talking when she attacked me when when she threw a punch at me grabbed onto me I grabbed onto her back got her off of me she hit the ground and then I FL and called Rus and then he sent someone out you called who Rus detective Rus okay so basically why we came back is when when you were when the jail was releasing you to your mom this morning was there anything said then yeah I said that I didn't really feel safe there with myself and with her and that I didn't know what was going to happen I still don't know what's going to happen as far as what her attacking me or her doing something to herself or me okay what about you doing something to her can are you able to control yourself I'm in a constant state of fight or flight and I don't know I'm if if I think she's going to do something even if she's not I might act I'm not going to like go crazy or anything but I'm I'm not sure honestly okay you're not sure if you're going to hurt only if she tries to hurt me okay did you make any statements saying that you were going to kill your mom if you got in the car with her I'm trying to figure out why we would have a Corporal at the jail that took you out that that dropped you off to your mom and telling us that you said don't put me in the car with her I'm going to kill her yeah um was that said I did not say I was going to kill her I did not say kill I I don't know why he sent me back here I asked him not to but he said he didn't like my attitude and that I had to this Griffith denied making any threats to kill his mother and despite the reports his statements were inconsistent he claimed to constantly feel like he was in a fight ORF flight mode and if he felt his mother was going to attack him he would react regardless of whether she actually was Colin exhibit signs of psychological instability and impulsivity the teenager seemed to pose a significant threat to his family and the police needed to prevent a tragedy well we're just trying to figure out we just want to make sure it's we do everything we can to prevent anything happening sir given situation I I don't think that we should be in the same house at all I don't think it's okay I mean we're going to court anyways at one God knows what's going to happen then how you get into court by car probably over do you drive how old are you uh yeah but I have to have an adult in the car with me you got to learn this permit yeah she's been trying to lure a confession out of me all day it's been well it's not sorry not all day but so what does this all start over has this been ongoing forever or is this all of a sudden happened last night for a long time um so I came to live with her after my dad died and since then it there's just been kind of times when things boil over with her and she acts out one time she pulled a gun on me I called the cops I guess I just didn't I wasn't believed well what got her to the point that she she's doing these things I don't know you have no idea all of a sudden out of nowhere she pulls a gun hit you it's cuz that I um I'm driving her crazy somehow with the way that I act and I don't know how I'm acting badly um she talks about school a lot my GRS are fine I got a 3.7 DPA um okay I mean obviously you're not you know you're you're you're smart enough kid I get that or whatever but but I mean obviously it takes two to to create this type of environment in this situation right and I've heard nothing you you haven't said a word about what's going on what you're doing or what is going on to provoke this or where it's coming from other than out of the blue your flies off the handle and does this stuff I'm I'm struggling with that a little bit she claims that CU I don't like help around the house um don't seem to follow rules uh a big thing for her is that I don't make a schedule uh like I don't schedule my day um she has ADHD and a lot of other stuff um she was really abused by my dad from what I know and that kind of just made it to where she has these very specific things that set her off these triggers um they're strange it's hard to understand them I I still don't so that kind of just sets her off and I'm worried that she's at her breaking point I mean with everything that's happened how could she not be so how how long ago was your dad pass sorry to hear that by the way seven months seven months yeah okay he attacked me my dad and when he did he tried to kill me with a knife and then it was in Oklahoma and he died so okay yeah how was that I shot him when he tried to kill him did you already have a gun in your hand uh I was fleeing and the house was filled with guns 23 to be exact and um knew they were I didn't SE one out I was just trying to run but then I was cornered and I had nothing else that would be done in February of 2023 Colin Griffith had killed his father with a gun claiming self-defense while he was found not guilty the incident raised red flags about his potential for violence from now on law enforcement would be aware of this incident and no one including Colin himself knew what he was capable of and this deeply concerned the [Music] officers he's also a bit of a case but um stuff is that have problem with that no I'm saying is that what you think pulling gun out on you or what I don't know I think she's she know about that incident she does and she thinks that um as a result of that incident beforehand that I'm like murderous or sociopathic she said sociopathic a lot so lack of I don't know the clinical definition but basically she thinks that I'm an emotionless narcissistic murderous are you seeing anybody about that situation and trying and work through that or what online therapy online therapy yeah okay how's that working it's going I guess but probably going to miss this session and next session because everything that's going on okay how are you sir okay um so right now I mean yeah right right this is the second time today okay I'll still make my CT appearance cry um should if not they'll definitely know you know make sure they know where you are is this an ARR or a Bak morning who gets a call from the jail that he was released um he's got a court date at 1:00 was fearful and he said if you put me in the car this is what he tells the jail staff he puts me in the car I'm going to kill her if you send me back to that house I'll probably kill her now they forward that information to me so I called the jail staff to confirm that I speak with Corporal plats who said yeah that's what he did say he's like however I just reached out with my Watch Commander and they're like you know just go ahead and you know he's responsibility and I know that there's a history and I know he does this however at no point at no point was he evaluated at no point and my argument is you want to call patrol for everything else to evaluate for a baker W because you have a kid saying don't put me in this car or I'll kill her and I'm supposed to just like okay pretend you didn't tell me that so I didn't know if um we're here now I you know Mom is is uh hesitant you know she's very reluctant to she said listen this is uh you taken him this is this is an ongoing issue it's going to make it worse I said ma'am I'm not looking to make anything worse but I I struggle with what's being said no he's just playing a game well that's not for me to determine if he's playing a game or not so I didn't know I know you guys have a rapport of him I don't know if you want anything done she gave me she wasn't horrible but she gave me a hard time inside she goes if you do this you're making the situation worse I said no ma'am I'm doing my job I'm not here to make a situation worse but releasing him to you when he wants to hurt you and you were fearful last night but now you're telling me for 4 hours later you're not no I'm sorry how many times placeing handcuff man so LS is transporting they're leaving now they're headed for the Baker Act and um okay actually I'm going to go off now just because they're leaving another after the call the officer reported the mother's statements and her desperation about the potential consequences of having her son removed from the home the officers needed to convince her to cooperate as Colin was a minor and she was legally responsible for his well-being they needed to work together to ensure the safety of the family as it was clear this wasn't a situation that could be resolved with a simple warning Colin's History of Violence and his recent threats indicated a serious problem which required immediate attention did you tell them at the jail that you were going to kill me did you say you were going to hurt me okay I heard you say you were worried what was going to happen ma' yes they have to go I understand they have to go yes he did to jail staff they have to go okay that's not I I don't know how others treat it but I'm telling you how we treat it and he's going to be B okay and I don't want you it's not I don't want you to not talk to your son but I don't need the situation he didn't he may have not told you but he told the employee of the jail what he was going to do and and I completely understand with what you're saying that you may use that as a tool but we don't use bakera as a tool it's a criteria what we have to do our job and so when he gets there he tells them he's not homicidal I don't care what he tells them he told the jail staff he wants to kill his mom he's not staying here I'm he already has a dead dad I get it I just I don't I'm ma'am I've never this is the first time I've met your son I don't even know your history I don't know the history of his dad I know a little bit were you able to speak to rentes yes okay and what did he say that's exactly where he was going he said Baker AC all day long I talked to rst and his boss just called me as well that's why I walked away a second time cuz we want what's right for him but we also want but we have an obligation to protect you and protect him we have to protect both because even though he didn't threaten to harm himself he threatened to harm his mom and either way that yeah I know and with all due respect you can't have them here last night where you were fearful and then 4 hours later you're recording because that's going to recording is not helping you when he chokes you out and you what's the recording going to do what's the recording stop bringing you back you'll still be dead you know I I'm not I'm not trying to make it sound like it's an easy task ma'am because I'm sure it's it's a tough thing to do but I struggle with a kid that's being released from jail and saying if you bring me back there she's going to die after taking Colin into custody the officers tried to explain the seriousness of the situation to his mother they told her that her son had been arrested due to the threats he had made the previous night the mother was taken aback by the arrest and was reprimanded by the officers for her actions they pointed out that she had made a video of the incident but had failed to call the police immediately it was a difficult situation and the officers had to work to deescalate the situation and ensure the safety of everyone involved they needed to help the mother understand the severity of the situation and provide her with the resources she needed to deal with her son's Behavior if we don't do something then shame on us then we're not shame on us that we our job and we failed you and I'm not failing you nor am I going to fail your son I think Lacy's probably going to come talk to you is she yeah I think I don't I I haven't talked to her directly um but I know rentis when I hung up amazing and renes they've been great and I know they want to help you and I know they were here for 4 hours yesterday trying to figure it out so this was before because we had something on Monday and so if they Place him in a residential facility a group home a foster care whatever it is they decide that best for him I'm I'm not going fighting this because there's no point I talk to the people for intake I gave them all of colum's information they asked me a bunch of questions about him and his background I answered every question and I just asked that they remove my contact number so that he's not able to call me if I thought you were the problem I would like I told you yesterday I would have done everything behind it's not that I'm a problem it's that I'm a problem to him your problem to him right now but with the right therapy with finding a solution and committing to it you will get that colon that you want back but the Colin you want is unmanaged because he doesn't know how to control himself he doesn't even understand at times which Colin is which and he actually talked to me yesterday and he tried to explain the difference in the colums and how it runs away from him he couldn't even explain it correctly he's like I don't even know how to explain this and get this out but I'll try the best I can and he's trying to figure out if I understand exactly he kept trying to say it in different ways but that's one of the leading causes if you know and I know you knows that when you are in that that is very hard to explain to somebody it's not a normal person that has that can't explain it right like eventually as you get older you don't learn that until you get older how to explain it how to manage it because that immaturity from being that young in life experiences is what causes you not to understand and explain how to how that works and I even talked to a a expert today on it on those different things cuz I wanted to have a different understanding on that because I don't understand that completely not trained enough on that and learned enough about that and they said that's a prime example of that in his his maturity level which you engage maturity level off people like that which actually brought me back to an understanding okay maybe this is correct this is true I think following up with you will give you more reassurance I I because the not knowing I don't care anymore I don't the not knowing is what it's really going to hurt you no I hope it won't just giving up on yourself and everything all all together I am and that's okay yeah but I can't I she couldn't simply abandon her son as it would be considered child neglect they stress the importance of cooperating with them to ensure the safety of both Colin and herself after a lengthy conversation Katherine remained hesitant she was terrified that Colin would retaliate against her if she agreed to the placement the situation was Dire and the officers had to act to protect everyone involved they needed to determine whether placing Colin in a treatment facility was the best course of action would it help him or would it make things worse investigators say 17-year-old Colin Griffith stabbed his mother on Sunday after an argument he initially told investigators that his mom lunged at him with a knife and fell on it causing a stab wound to her neck Al he was arrested for killing his father when I look at him I see a psychopath I'm Brian Haw state attorney for the 10th Judicial Circuit of Florida the P County grand jury indicted Colin Griffith on the charge of first-degree murder for the killing of his mother in aldale last week Wednesday September 11th of 2024 Colin Griffith is charged with first-degree murder for killing his mother officers reported that Griffith called 911 and claimed that he and his mother had gotten into an argument he stated that during the argument his mother had lunged at him with a knife causing him to accidentally stab her in the neck Griffith is also facing charges of false imprisonment for confining his mother against her will Witnesses reported hearing Catherine pleading with Colin to let her go and saw him dragging her into the house by her hair according to officials inconsistencies in Griffith's story along with witness testimonies and forensic evidence led to his arrest the medical examiner's report determined that the wound to the mother's neck was not consistent with Griffith's self-defense claim the P County prosecutor's office is reviewing the case of Griffith's father's death to determine if additional charges are warranted investigators are working to establish a timeline of events and gather all of the necessary evidence in order to secure a conviction
