It's an open door. It's a police building. It's a police building. It's a human rights charter. Freedom of the press. >> No. No, [music] don't touch me. >> Why are you touching me? What are you doing? >> Identify yourself, please. >> I've identified myself. >> No, you haven't. Identify yourself. >> Camera turns on and in an instant, Lambeth station becomes a battleground between power and freedom. >> You've violated my human rights. >> Do you have any questions? [music] >> You have just violated my human rights. >> A routine filming session, but the confrontation at Lambeth station exposed the dark side of the transparency [music] that police always preach. >> That's your traffic officer, officer. He's saying you can't drive in there, officer. >> Camera, a citizen and a seemingly normal police station until he presses [music] the record button. >> Okay, again, I'm going to respectfully decline. >> What I'm saying is >> our trespass is a civil matter. It doesn't give you >> yeah, indeed, but you're trespassing on an area. >> The curtains were drawn, the front door was locked, the entire police station was in chaos, all because of a camera and someone who dared to question freedom of speech. >> I don't understand everyone leaving now. Are you coming in? Maybe, maybe not. Yeah, send everyone out the back door cuz the guy's filming. EX208HF [clears throat] That is a nice car. Look at these guys. He's got a nice big smile on his face. Hope you guys caught that. Oh, it's in good nick, that. Can I ask your vehicle again? I've seen these dotted about. Very Touch on traffic also also very connect the phone. He's saying you can't drive in there, officer. Very strange. Not letting anyone in. I don't know where he's going to go. He just not in. Very strange they're stopping the police from going in. The security stopping the police from going in because of a man with a camera. How strange. I'm not coming in. I'm just standing here. >> When an officer stepped out thinking everything would be resolved peacefully, a heated debate about the symbol on the uniform broke out. >> Good afternoon, sir. How are you? >> I'm all right. How are you? Is that part of your uniform? >> Part of my uniform? >> That blue thing, is that part of your kit? >> It is part of my kit, so yeah. >> Is it met issued? >> It is met issued, yeah. >> I don't think I don't think it is. >> It's for spiking, sir. >> For spiking? >> Have you ever heard of them? >> Mustapha? >> No, so if you there's a campaign, so it's all to prevent um spiking in in nightclubs and stuff. >> Is it? >> So I keep one as a demonstration. >> And that's I should buy the met. >> It is issued, yeah. We give them out to licensed premises. >> Do you, right? Okay. You know that flag you've got on? >> Yeah. >> That's not part of your police issued uniform. >> It is part of my kit, yeah. >> That's not part of police issued uniform. That's not what I said. >> It's part of my kit, so yeah, yeah. >> It's not police issued. I know it's a charity. >> It is, yeah. >> But you know for some people >> Yeah. >> that's offensive. >> I've got it. >> Do you understand that? >> I've got it. >> It's a desecration of the the Union flag. >> answer personal questions. >> I don't I don't ask personal questions. You identify yourself, please. >> I don't ask personal questions. So account as to why >> I just thank you. Identify yourself, please. >> I'm >> Sergeant Keen. I'm from Bromley Police Station. >> And your number? >> Uh 124 SN. >> Bromley Police Station? >> I'm on all night today. >> What are you here for? >> Policing an event today. >> Oh, yeah. All right. What event is that? >> Uh it's a state opening of a state visit from the South African president. >> Ah, is that why they've got the flags up Parliament's Square? All right. Okay. Makes sense. You all right, boys? Got an audience. >> Um are you are you part of an audience today? >> Same old thing. So, I don't answer personal questions. I could be here for something extremely dangerous, or I could be here for something completely innocent. You're not going to find out either way. >> The man turned and walked into the reception area. The door was open, no sign prohibiting it, but seconds later, all boundaries between civil rights and police abuse collapsed. >> Right. I'll sit comfortable, then. >> Sorry, mate? >> I said I'll make myself comfortable, then. >> Hello, sir. >> Hello, mate. >> This is not a public building. >> open door. >> It's not a public building. >> It's a police building. >> Are you here to visit someone? >> It's a police building. >> So, are you here to visit >> I don't answer personal questions. >> Do you have an appointment? You know, if you're here not to visit someone >> Okay. >> or here by appointment >> Okay. >> uh this is not a public space. >> Is it not? >> It is not public. >> Okay. So, is it a police building? >> It is a police building. >> Okay. So, who pays for that? >> This specific part of the building is in the public >> It's an open reception. >> Therefore, we have the right to ask people to leave. So, you're more than welcome to come and film outside the building. Uh but we are asking you kindly, if you wouldn't mind leaving, sir. >> Okay. I'm going to I'm going to respectfully decline because I disagree and think that this is a taxpayer-funded building. This is a public area. It's an open door. >> It doesn't give you a right to go into any building. >> Yes, it does. The law does. Section 33 Criminal Justice Act 1972 does. Okay. Well, it does. So, if you want to secure >> You can't You can't go into any old building, can you, sir? >> Well, if it's open to the public, yes, it is. So, this >> This isn't open to the public. >> Well, unfortunately, I beg to differ because that is an open door. There's no sign saying no entry. >> It is. But a gentleman is is who's on the front desk has asked you not to come in and leave come in. So >> Okay. >> So if you would mind please leaving, that'd be very kind. >> Okay, again I'm going to respectfully decline. >> What? >> And as trespass is a civil matter, it does it it doesn't give you >> Trespass, yeah, indeed, but you're trespassing on an area where we've asked you to leave. So >> Okay. >> Indeed. But >> And as a public you you you're trying to trespass me from a public public place. >> It's obviously sparking argument, I think. >> Not at all. >> Well, you have said cuz the the whole conversation that we've been having and even conversation with that outside is very argumentative, I >> Was it? >> It is. Yeah, I believe it is. So >> I think I've been relatively calm. I've not raised my voice. I've not worried. >> but you don't need to raise your voice in an argument, I believe. >> Dragged out of the building, he still held the camera, calmly said a sentence that caused a stir on social networks. Is this how Britain treats press freedom? >> Well, we'll escort you out of the building here where you will be able to still continue filming. >> Okay. Okay. >> So if you would like to please get up, thank you very much. Okay, so I'm going to take you by the arm now sir. I'm going to escort you out of the >> As you can see guys, they grab pulled off me, assaulted me in the process. I said to him I wouldn't fight back. As soon as I cross that threshold, you can both take your hands off me. Thank you very much. >> Okay, please have a good day. Please continue to film. Please >> Sir, you have just you have just committed an assault. There will be complaints and civil claims made against all three of you. >> As I >> And as you stood there, who was it? Yourself and you that put your hands on me? >> It's myself and my colleague. >> Because you stood there doing nothing, you've done nothing to protect my rights under article 10 of the human rights charter. >> If you continue to trespass, >> Freedom to expression. You have violated my human rights. How dare you? You violated my human rights. You have just violated my human rights. Do you stand on your oath today, officer? Do you stand on your oath today, officer? If you damage my phone, liable. Do you stand on your oath today, officer? So as you can see, that's how you're treated for being in a public place. Manhandled, assaulted, your rights infringed upon. So, as I said, I wasn't going to resist because I knew pretty quickly that they would they would go to put me on the floor. Um and they looked for a reason to arrest me. Um but yeah, so that those three officers shall be hearing from professional standards soon enough. >> In the UK, police abuse of power or human rights violations can be investigated by the IOPC, dismissed, criminally prosecuted with up to 10 years in prison, and forced to pay civil compensation to victims. The auditor continued filming outside, criticizing the police for power abuse, human rights violations, and law abuse. He announced that he would file a complaint with the professional standards department. Up next, a man with a camera stood outside a police station, and what happened next stunned the whole of Britain. >> You haven't identified yourself or nothing. Who are you? >> Well, I am a copper, that's all I'm saying. You haven't identified yourself to >> I don't need to identify myself. It's your policy to identify. >> Well, you're going to treat people the way you want to be treated. >> No, no, no. You've got a policy that you need to identify. >> I won't go and show you my ID. >> It's your employment policy. I'm not talking to you. >> Well, I am talking to you. >> Don't interrupt. >> I won't go and show you my ID. >> Do you normally interrupt people? You're very, very rude. >> No, you're so are you. >> No, I'm I'm literally I'm actually in a public servant. I'm just asking who are you? >> Does he I've asked you what's going on. >> Who are you? >> Me, I'm a copper. >> I I gathered that. Like, you're not even in uniform. >> Yeah, exactly. >> And you're not going to identify yourself. I'm not saying there's an issue there. >> Right. >> Do you know Do you know who Wayne Cousins is? >> Right. >> Do you know who Wayne Cousins is? You've heard that name before. >> Who is he? >> He's all over the press. He's a police officer that [music] that that misused >> All right, that one. >> that misused the the the policy in terms of identifying himself. >> All right. >> And that's why it's really important that police officers that with members of the public. >> put two and two together and I think that I've got this one. >> Again, I can there's nothing that you've got that I can't buy on eBay. >> All right. >> All right. >> But there's the one with the badge there. >> What one? Can you show me your badge? >> Show me your badge. It's the same time someone will approach you and tell you that police are here. >> Can you show me your badge? >> You see you you >> you just you just jumped out of a car. I don't know where you've come from. You've jumped out of a car, you've come up and asked me questions and you said you're a police officer. You're a fancy dress man. >> Yeah. >> I think you need to wear your neck and job on like that. >> What do you mean? >> Yeah, I've got a reason for this. I've got a reason for this. But I've not got a I don't have a duty to apologize. >> In an instant, the conversation turned into a symbol of the fear of unchecked power within the British police force. >> No. No, I'm not. Behave yourself. No, I'm near your gate. I'm not near your gate. I'm not near the gate. No. No, don't touch me. >> You're touching me. What are you doing? You've just assaulted me. I'm away from the gate. Why are you still touching me? No, I'm away from the gate. No. Identify yourself now. Why are you still pushing me? You Why are you still pushing me? I'm away from the gate. I'm away from the gate. Identify yourself, please. Why are you still pushing me? Why are you still pushing me? I'm away from the gate. Stop pushing me. You've just ended your career, you know that. Get off me. What are you doing? I think you should get a sergeant here. I think you should get a I should get a sergeant here. I'm not I'm not getting I'm not walking anywhere. I'm in a public place. What are you doing? No, I'm not going anywhere. What are you doing? No, I'm not going anywhere. >> [laughter] >> You've ended your day. You've ended your career, love. No. No, stop pushing me. Stop pushing me. Stop pushing me. No. That's a public place. I can go wherever I want. I think you need to get your your supervisor here now. You're in trouble, pal. You're in trouble. Identify yourself, please. No, you haven't. Identify yourself. No, I can go wherever I want. It's a public place. It's a public place. Do you understand that, yeah? You understand what a public place is. I'm not trying to get in at all. You're lying. Why are you lying? It's all on camera. Why are you lying? Why are you lying? Huh? You seriously just pushed me all the way from there. You know full well I can't do nothing to defend myself because you're in uniform and you'd have me twisted up in a second. All right, it's a public place. You have no authority whatsoever to dictate [music] where I go. Is that clear? >> A female officer appeared and all restraints were immediately removed. No arrest warrant, no warning, just repeated shoving on the public sidewalk. >> I'm not going into the gate, okay? I'll make that absolutely clear. And when you see this video, you see that I was in the other gate. It was open and I didn't go in. That's fine. Well, you will when I take you to court. Okay, when you're in a in a professional standards investigation, you'll see this video cuz I guarantee you you've just ended your career. 100% 100% Right here. Yeah. I do have a home, yeah. But that's I'm I'm here for work purposes. Why don't you just have a conversation with me instead of getting all physical? Like you don't have to like I'm not unreasonable, but I've become unreasonable when you start assaulting members of the public. Do you know I mean like All you had to do was have a conversation. I would have answered your questions happily, you know? Happily answered your questions, but you don't have the right to assault someone. I was not going into the police station, okay? I understand what you're saying, but you but we could have had a conversation about it. But we could have we could have had like Now, it looks like we've we've de-escalated a little bit, so I'm willing to have a conversation with you. Yeah, I'm not going to leave. I'm not going to go in the gate, but I'm not going to leave, okay? No, I won't, cuz I'm walking backwards and forwards. I'm making a video. I'm doing my work. No, I won't. I'll stay on this side. Look, it's a public place. You can't tell me where I where where where I can walk and where I can't walk. But I'm not going to go into your gate. The gate's closed. >> Amidst a barrage of cameras and witnesses, the man stood firm, citing the law, demanding justice, while the police continued to justify themselves with two words, security. >> Like this is not what I'm here to do. They're going to assault me. Fine. They'll deal with the consequences of that. You know what I mean? She continually pushed me. It doesn't give her the grounds to say that's a security I think there's a security risk. What? Like um absolute preposterous. You know, it doesn't give her the grounds to keep pushing me once I'm away from the gate, and uh yeah, absolute mental. She's [ __ ] up. Unfortunately for her, she's made a huge huge miscalculation that is going to have serious ramifications. If she has got such a short fuse, she shouldn't be in the public service. It's as [music] simple as that. You know what I mean? Like I didn't do anything wrong. It's such as sit standing here having a bit of a laugh on camera. Um and she's come out and started to assault me. It's unacceptable, completely unacceptable. What happens if she's dealing with people that are um clearly aggravated or we've got mental health issues or something like that. You know what I mean? If she's willing to do that to me in that situation, what's she going to do in a high-intensity, very stressful situation? She's going to up there uh seriously hurting someone, you know what I mean? Absolute carry-on. >> A push, a moment of anger, and it could mean the end of an officer's career. Gateshead witnessed not just a collision, but a moment when Britain had to ask itself, who was protecting whom? An American veteran refused to comply with a bizarre order at a public health facility, and within minutes, things spiraled out of control as he began challenging the authority of the police on [music] the spot. >> You what now? He's not I'm not enforcing anything, man. I'm happy he's not wearing a mask. >> When an officer casually declares, >> [music] >> "I will personally order your deportation," one has to wonder who really holds the power in a federal facility. >> You have an appointment today or something? >> I did, yeah. >> Okay. You understand I'm enforcing you to follow the law. >> No, I >> don't understand that. I have to follow the law. >> You're going to get a >> Well, the law. >> Yeah, you're right. Oh, you're right. You're not going to You're not going to copsplain anything to me. You know what's going to happen. >> You understand the law. >> I understand the law. >> Okay. All right. Is there a law that back this crap right here? >> Is there a law that back this diagram on my face? >> Okay. >> This is a private business. >> not. It's tax It's funded by taxpayer dollars. >> You'll You'll have to take that up with your senator. >> up We're taking it up with the judge first because he's writing me a ticket right now. For for not breaking the law. Writing me a ticket for not breaking a law. >> I'm only here to keep the peace. >> Yeah. Yeah. And I'm here to defend the Constitution. I'm here to defend my country. >> Well, that's fine. We all did that. I'm a veteran, too. >> Great. Great. And you're not wearing a mask. Well, I love it. I love that. >> I just got here. I'm not staying in the >> You came in. Oh, you You came in. It says right there, man. >> Mask required. Stop. are required to check in at the front desk. Wear a mask. >> I'm not either. I was just here for a little while. >> to escort you out. >> He's not going to abide by the laws if you don't try to impose it. >> Do what now? He's not I'm not enforcing anything, man. I'm happy he's not wearing a mask. >> Officer can I clarify 21 major 11 10 at the university? >> So I just bring uh what what it's just a beautiful day. Deputy Sheriff you have a rank? >> Officer. >> You're officer? >> Officer Clark. >> What about your military rank? >> No, you're not in the military. >> First sergeant. >> You're not in the military. >> I'm a first sergeant. >> You're not in the military. >> I'm still serving. >> The personal camera suddenly turned off when the man turned his back and accusations that police intervened made things even murkier than ever. >> What's just the number on the badge? >> 520 is going to trespass me, okay. For for not breaking the law? >> I'm trespassing you cuz they said you caused a disturbance. >> I did not cause a disturbance. >> Well, that's your word against their word. >> No, I did not cause Hey, you it's still recording. >> Like I said, that's your word against their word. >> Yes, it is. And that'll be that'll be >> Yes, it is. Yes, it is. >> That'll be it. Something for you to bring up with the judge. >> Yes, it will be. I expect you all to be there. >> I love overtime. >> Thank you, sir. >> Yeah, right. Isn't that funny? Isn't that funny? >> I'm a taxpayer. >> Isn't that funny stuff, man? On taxpayer money you love overtime. It's great. Great stuff. >> Yes, I am. >> Rennell likes it, too. >> Are you wearing an additional? >> Yeah, are your body cams working? >> Yes, they are. >> They're on. They're on. >> They are. >> Always on. >> Good. M. Riddell. C. Perry. >> Yep. >> Just need to know who to put in the paperwork. >> That's fine. >> Of course, J. Clark. >> I don't know J's first name. J. >> 10 [clears throat] 14. >> Why isn't my thing recording? Why did you did you turn it on? >> I did not touch your phone. >> It's not recording, sir. >> Stay over there. >> I need my phone. I need it back on record. >> Get your phone over there. >> You turned it off record, man. Uh why'd you turn off my phone? >> He hasn't touched your phone from the time I've been in here. >> It was recording. And now it's not recording. I turned my back and it's not recording anymore. >> Do you have unlimited record there? It probably timed out. >> No, I've got terabytes. That >> No, but the most of the programs will time out after a certain amount of >> Well, I'll have your cameras as well. >> Watch this. >> Although, yours kind of go missing >> missing every once in a while. >> No. >> All right. Okay. >> I'll sign that. >> No arrest, no trial, but a strange ticket prepared in advance. Is this professionalism or a deliberate setup? >> I'm going to a different kind of courthouse, a VA courthouse. >> [clears throat] >> Federal. >> Yes. >> It'll be a federal courthouse. >> If you would like to Well, I think you can pay the ticket. I don't want the ticket, man. >> You want to go to a federal court? >> Oh, yeah. >> We'll all be there. >> They won't issue a warrant. >> And he likes it cuz he gets overtime. >> I'll I'll do it on myself. It's your job to do it. >> It's your job to be a tyrant. >> Yeah. What's this one for? >> Yeah, this was one pre-filled out for the the disruptive behavior. >> There was no disruptive behavior. Who's the complaint? >> I said it was pre-filled out in case I had to use it. >> That was not charged. >> And who's complaint? >> New horn. >> All right. >> Teacher's right. >> All right. >> Teacher's right. Sorry, I'm not thinking of a word. >> The name of the business? >> Of uh Omega Dentistry. >> All right. >> Well, I don't have my phone. >> My bet's on record. The disruptive behavior, that is. >> And finally, while the man stood still, [music] the officers admitted the real reason behind the incident. But, what they said was the most shocking. >> Before you start, I'd like to get Before you start, I'd like to get this back on your warning sir. >> Hello. What am I being ticketed for? >> Disorderly conduct. >> Disorderly conduct? Not for not wearing a mask? Or is that the disorderly conduct [music] for not wearing a mask? >> That's what we told you that you had to wear a mask at all. >> I'm not sure. Yes, sir. And then I'm Jake Clark. >> 4971 C. Harry. >> 240. >> 240. >> Yes, 240. >> Charles White. >> What's your badge number? >> Uh 4736. >> 4736. >> 927. >> 927. Brilliant. All right. Thank y'all. [music] >> Have a good night, sir. >> All right. >> How y'all doing today? >> Good. >> The person gave him the option to leave to his leave, but he didn't want to leave. He's leaving now. >> I tried. I tried, man. I was trying to eat my breakfast, you know. >> Can I help you? >> Good. Quiet. >> Good to see you. >> Good to see you. >> All right. It's a Monday. >> [music] >> How are you guys doing? >> Good. How are you, sir? >> I'm doing good. Watch your back. >> The citizens vowed to take the matter to court, gathering all the names and badge numbers of the officers, and hinting at the possibility of using an attorney. With the entire incident caught on video, if the allegations of abuse of power and tampering with evidence are proven, the police [music] could face a civil lawsuit under 42 USCS 1983 for violation of constitutional rights. A simple question starts it all, but then the footsteps of authority approach, and suddenly everything becomes suffocating. >> Let me get out of y'all's way. >> Let me get out of your way. >> We we >> He didn't assault him. >> Give me my phone. >> Do you know what the >> I can lawfully record. >> We're going to stay on the sidewalk. >> Get somewhere you can lawfully record. >> No, I'm lawfully allowed to be here. I can lawfully record. >> Just a trivial act on Halloween night, and then the entire police force was faced with a tough question. Was violence truly necessary? >> Whatever happened with all that, are they Is there charges being pressed against them still? You don't know anything about that? Were you involved in that at all? >> I was, yes. >> Lieutenant What do you think about it? You think that You think Lieutenant May was in the right for escalating [music] it to that level? I mean I I mean I think Lieutenant May was in the wrong. I'm not saying I think everyone else that showed up was in the wrong. They were doing their jobs, but I do think he was in the wrong. [music] Would you Or let me ask you this, would you have done it the same way? >> I couldn't say. I mean, I wasn't in that situation. >> You You've seen the video. You should know whether, you know, if someone shows me a job site I've not been on, I'll tell you what I would have done or not would have done. So, what would you have done on that job site? So, if someone's littering, it's okay to escalate it to violence? >> I mean, if you have a non-compliant suspect >> I mean, he went hands-on with them before they were non-compliant. >> Okay. I mean, I wasn't there for that portion. >> So, do you think it's okay to go hands-on with someone for littering, even if they don't like the fact that they got caught littering? That it's okay to escalate it with a minor to violence? And then that's when it escalated with the other girls because he immediately goes hands-on with a minor over a Red Bull can on Halloween. >> Uh no, I can't say that I did. >> Any of your friends do that or anything? >> Uh I'm not saying I did, either. >> Yeah, I think she should have helped my friend out. >> You think they should have got beat up for it? >> I mean I don't know. >> I'm not trying to put you in a corner. I'm literally just asking you. Uh the answer is no. You [music] shouldn't think your friend should be beat up for teepeeing a house. I think, anyway. I'd be surprised if someone said yes. >> Powerful command echoes, but what happens next leaves the entire crowd in stunned silence. In the end, who truly crossed the line? >> If I threw a cigarette butt right in front of you right now would you go hands-on with me? >> What are we doing right now? >> Asking you a question. >> Okay. are these other units investigating something right now? >> Oh, I'm sorry. I would ask if he was busy. >> Okay, if if they're investigating or if they're doing something right now, by law, you're interfering in a governmental operation, so y'all need to >> Interfering is a physical act. And whenever I walked up here, I asked him specifically, "Hey, are you busy? Cuz if you are, I'll come back." And he said, "No, what's up?" So, now we're talking. I didn't just [music] come bombard him. I literally asked him, "Are you busy?" >> We were as polite to him as we would be to our mothers. >> Yeah. >> But if units are here in the parking lot, then they're taking care of an official business, then we don't need to be right here where they're taking care of the business. >> Well, [music] we We asked them and they said they would talk. Sir, I think you're coming up and you don't know what the situation is. You absolutely are assuming cuz you're assuming that I came up here and started bombarding them. And you didn't You didn't hear me ask permission and say, "What's up?" >> How many units is in the parking lot? >> That's That's irrelevant. There could be 10. >> It's four in the parking lot. The gentleman over here was taking a report with with another lady, so we didn't bother him. This unit had three individuals in it. >> This unit is empty cuz that officer is right there. >> Okay. >> And they came up to me and and started talking to me first. >> Yeah, go go go Let me get out of y'all's way. >> Let me get out of your way. >> We We [music] don't want We don't want to impede or >> So >> anything. We just asked a question for >> Yeah. >> The phone crashes to the ground. A moment of explosion. Both the audience and those involved can't believe their eyes. >> This [music] is what I'm fixing to tell you. You're interfering with a governmental operation. >> Interfering. If you do not >> Interfering. >> move from right here, I'm not going to explain it to you, sergeant. [music] >> I do have a >> Can I get him down here, please? >> No. >> Because you don't know what you're saying right now. >> I can tell you you you need to move. >> Interfering is a physical act. >> You need to move. >> Do you have a lieutenant sir? >> I do have a >> Can I get him down here, please? >> No. >> Because you don't know what you're saying right now. >> I can tell you you you need to move. >> Interfering is a physical act. >> You don't know the statute, so you need to move. >> That's assault. >> That is assault. >> I got it. >> You need to move.
