After months of manipulation, these two men scammed an elderly woman into giving them her life savings. Watch as police, alongside the FBI, finally track them down and bring their scheme to an end. In August of 2025, the victim fell for a pop-up scam that instructed her to contact the suspects who were posing as federal agents. According to police reports, the scammers convinced her that her bank accounts had been compromised and told her to purchase large amounts of gold so it could be secured in a federal safety deposit. They warned her that failing to cooperate could result in sanctions, falsely claiming her accounts had been tied to illegal activity. Over the next 7 months, the victim purchased nearly $200,000 worth of gold, eventually handing it over to one of the suspects in March of this year. 3 days later, after no longer hearing from the scammers, she contacted police. >> I clicked on my computer, this huge red box came up and said, "Don't touch any keys. If you do, you're going to lose everything. Call this Call Apple Security at 800" I don't know if it was their security, but it didn't matter at that time. It freaked me out. I called. And then, the guy came on and he's doing this, that, and the other thing. And then, he said, "Oh, this is bad. This is very, very bad. You need to go here. You'll be hearing from Brett Brett Loveland, who is with the National Cyber Investigative Joint Council Joint Task Force." And then, he sent three different letters, one in August 23rd, 2027, and 2028. Long story. I won't I won't bore you, but I had to I went through three banks and finally got to the my bank. And then, towards the end, finally at the third bank, I was able to wire almost $25,000. >> Did you actually send that money to this person? >> No, I didn't send it. They came to pick It was gold. >> Oh, so you bought the gold and then >> They came and picked it up. >> They actually came and picked the gold up from here? >> Yeah, and it was all okay. I'm going to call one of my one of my one of my men will come and pick it up and then bring it down to Washington. And so, he would call the day and then give me, "Okay, this is the code you need to have. He's going to say, you know, for the I live in the apartment. I wanted floor. He'll be outside and he'll be he'll be walking by and he'll just say 95 or whatever it was and then you just give it to them." >> Okay, and this >> was the picture that I took cuz it was that cash to bring it up to 47. And the second time, it was this is 47,000. And the same thing happened except he came by and it was a different person came by in a copper and was just like, "Go, you know, like beat-up old car or whatever." And the guy definitely was either East Indian or Pakistani or something. He was in a >> So, this happened again? You brought the gold three times. >> Yes. >> And they picked up the gold from you all three times. >> Correct. >> That's where all this started from. Okay. >> Correct. >> That was the team. >> This is funny. And then the last but the last time he said, and this was why this this what he said we have to we have to take 80% of your equity out of your borrowing account. The Department of Justice but um the international police I can never remember what they're called, okay? The whatever they >> Interpol? >> Interpol. And UK are involved now. So, you know, we have to prove your whatever whatever and you need to withdraw 80% of your equity. So, that is another long story, but I did and I had opened another account checking account and I and I put the money in there. >> But I'm just curious on how they were convincing you to do this. Like what was their reason? >> Because because if they it was they they you know it was this is going to you know your family are in extreme will be in extreme danger. >> So they were threatening >> Oh yes. Oh yes. Yes, basically >> They were saying if you don't >> If you don't do this >> for your for your family >> Yeah, basically right. Yeah. Yeah. >> And that and you thought you were speaking to the FBI? >> Absolutely, yeah. The whole time. You know, I mean whenever I mean really I just you know I got sucked in. I just got sucked in. I believe anyway I did and >> But you you were thinking >> and every time the end point I would call or when he would call he would say um Officer Brett Lederman um FBI headquarters Washington D.C. you know. And I am I believe people. I am very >> trusting of others. >> too. Yeah. >> But so you you so you thought that the FBI was threatening to hurt your family if >> Well it wasn't the FBI that was going to that was going to harm them. It was the bad guys that were going to. >> And you said something about people were trying to hurt you or >> Well um he said that the first was all of your money could be frozen. Um you would not have access to it. Your family um I don't remember the exact it's been so long but your having to do with my family you know your family will be affected. I don't know if he said hurt but will you know will be affected. You're going to be on TV. It's going to be all over the news that you did I mean I know it sounds obviously it's it's all part of it sounds ridiculous now that I say it but because after putting it all together it's like how could I not have seen that but I was I was I was I wasn't just frightened. I was really almost terrified. I mean really and and especially like I said you know, caring for my sister and my responsibility to her. >> After taking the report, investigators provided the victim with additional gold and fake receipts instructing her to arrange another meet up where police could confront them. Officers also asked her to record the phone call in hopes of gathering more identifying information. >> Yes, Mr. Wagner and I'm home. Yes, one moment. I will. Okay, I'll do it now. Okay. Did you get it? Did you Hello? >> The total amount of gold is $496,889. Is that right? >> Correct. It just has you know, five American buffalos but no ounces but for the Yeah. >> And the five American buffalos one ounce each and four gold eagles one ounce each and 12 gold bars one five gram edition total of 12 and 16 five 21 ounces and 10 grams. Is that right? >> If you say so, yeah. >> Now, can you please show all the gold so that we can take a picture? >> Yeah, I need to put it on the floor so just a minute. >> All right. That's perfect. Hold it steady. >> The victim sends photos of the gold provided by police and arranges another meet up with the scammer. Unaware it's a setup, he heads to the location while officers wait nearby with a detailed description of his vehicle. >> Touch. >> Josh, move. DO NOT MOVE. DO NOT MOVE. KEEP YOUR HANDS UP.
