So, you either weren't paying attention or you just didn't see the stop sign and >> Oh, no. I was paying attention. >> So, I'm going to go over there and check the skid marks. If there's not there, you are going to be cited. >> On July 18th, 2023, at approximately 5:22 p.m., the Baraboo Police Department responded to a serious two-vehicle crash at County Highway T and City View Road. Behind the wheel of one of those vehicles was Britain, who claimed her brakes had suddenly failed before she blew through a stop sign. As officers began speaking with her, they quickly noticed something that suggested this crash may have occurred as a result of a different reason. >> I don't know what the >> I don't know what the I don't know >> If it's skid marks, it's going to leave marks. So, you either weren't paying attention or you just didn't see the stop sign and you ran through it. >> Oh, no. I was paying attention. >> So, I'm going to go over there and check the skid marks. If there's not there, you are going to be cited. >> Were they okay? Or what's the status of them? >> There are injuries, for sure. I don't know >> How bad? >> Yeah. >> When I when I crashed, um like I was capable of reaching to my to my doors, and I I basically like crawled out of the car, and my first instinct was to run and see if she was okay, cuz I wanted to make sure like she was conscious and what not, you know? So, I ran over, you know, to her, and she was capable of crawling out, and she was talking about her dog, and is her her dog is okay, right? >> Yep. >> Okay. But, I ran out, and then I came back, and you know, he he was talking, conscious, and he was Like I just >> How about your passenger? >> Bradley, he was really hurt. >> The officers questioned Brittany and she seemed to be cooperating without showing any unnecessary aggression. However, the officers were not fully convinced of her story given her state and the extent of the accident. This led them to question what actually caused the collision. >> Can I ask you a question, Brittany? >> Yeah. >> Is that your in like your rehab? >> Um well, no. I go to the clinic. >> Okay. Methadone? >> Yeah, but it's only 10. >> Okay. Have you had Have you used today? >> No. >> Okay. When you were standing there, why were you When I was watching you having a very difficult time balancing. >> Cuz I'm shaky. Like I can't >> Okay. >> I'm I'm not intoxicated. I did not make it to the clinic this morning due to not receiving my driver's call. I go through bail. >> Okay. >> And you can look into that if >> No, I I I'm not arguing you with you on that. But these are not necessarily my concern. >> Right. >> So, are you willing to do some field sobriety tests for us while we're at the hospital? >> As far as As far as what? >> okay to drive a vehicle. >> Right. >> I mean, yeah. >> Okay. >> I mean, I haven't had I'm I'm shaky cuz I'm I have bad anxiety, depression, and I'm in shock. Like >> So, are you willing to send an officer up there >> Okay. >> to meet you there? Hold on. Why don't you get her in the car? Do not leave yet, though. >> Okay. To the stop sign, I was paying attention. I was going the speed limit. I had the intent to stop. Um I went to go press the brake, you know, like I normally would and um I don't I don't I I pressed the brake. 10-4. I don't know if maybe I >> 10-4. >> switched and pressed the gas or I >> 70. >> don't know what happened, but bottom line, I went through the stop sign and the other car was going this way, you know, I'm going this way. >> And you guys kind of T-boned? >> T-boned, her vehicle flipped and like while the air I've got pretty good reaction time while the airbag was going off, I pulled out belt, >> Seatbelt. >> door and I kind of pushed my way out of the airbag and I fell out of the car and I ran over to the other person's vehicle to see if she was stuck, if she was okay, you know, like I kneeled down and I was like, "Are you okay? Are you conscious?" You know, who's all in the vehicle, you know, and then I came back to my vehicle and >> Brit- Britney, who's all in your car? >> Jesse Burns. >> Okay. And Britney, um I'm just looking at your arm there. Can you roll your sleeve up for me a little bit? >> Oh, God. Ouch. >> Britney, when's the last time you used? >> Um actually, it's been quite some time. I've been having um I know I I do have old track marks. Um I have had a couple slip-ups since I've been out. My probation officer is aware of it. I've been honest with her every time and we have you know, contract with that and everything where if I have a dirty UA, I do um community service. I'm in the process of doing community service. >> good though. >> I have been doing good. >> that. What What Can I ask what your drug of choice was? >> Um >> Both? >> Um not so much but more so >> When's the last time you >> Um Quite some time. I'm not a big fan. It doesn't sit well with me. >> If I had a like a breathalyzer, you know, like for alcohol, which is like alcohol you're at. You haven't anything to drink for alcohol. >> No, I have not drank. >> it show for breathalyzer? It's going to and it picks up it's pretty If it is, it'd be pretty accurate within the last >> It >> 24 hours, 48 hours. >> It shouldn't It shouldn't show up with anything. Honestly, I >> I Brittany, I would like for you to be honest with me. When When is the last time you used? >> Um Honestly, when my last PO visit which was >> to When's the last time you used today? >> A little bit No, I didn't use today. I did not use today. I'm just choking up from everything going on. I didn't even make it to the methadone clinic today. Um my PO had asked me if I used um the third >> Can you look at me real quick? Okay, your eyes are pinpoint right now. >> Yeah, I just got into a car accident. >> That's not what car accidents don't cause that. Causes that. >> I'm not on any I haven't had any I've had >> any Oxycontin, any sort of downer like that, narcotics. Did you take a Oxycontin today? >> I had Not today, no. I've had nothing today. Nothing today. >> Now, look at your arms. These These don't look like old tracks. >> These are broken open because I scratch. I get rashes. I swear on my life I'm sober. I've been doing good. >> Let me ask you this, Brittany. And I I Do you have kids? >> I do have kids. >> are they? >> My son is 14 now, I believe, and my daughter's eight. >> Your 8-year-old daughter, you obviously love her. >> I Yes, I Yes, I do. >> Would you drive the car under your current condition if she was in it right now? >> I'm not I don't know how to answer anything. I'm not I don't know what to tell you. Like, I'm I said >> Well, that's That's not what I asked you. I asked you, "Would you drive the car under your current condition if your daughter your 8-year-old daughter's in it?" >> As of right now? No, BECAUSE I'M SHAKEN UP AND >> PRE-ACCIDENT? >> YES. >> OKAY. >> I would not >> scale of 0 to 10, 0 being completely sober, 10 being the highest you've ever been, where would you place yourself on that? >> I don't know. I haven't been high today. >> Can you answer that question between 0 and 10, where would you place yourself on that scale? >> A one. >> Okay. And what would the one be? >> I I smoked some weed. >> Okay. When did you smoke weed? >> That's more close today, but I have not smoked anything yet today. >> If it's It's just weed? Is it just weed? >> Yes. >> That's all you used today? >> And yes. >> Okay. And how long ago did you smoke weed? If it's not If it's just I want to know when you smoked weed. >> Probably 3:00, 4:00 in the morning. >> 3:00, 4:00 in the morning? >> Yes. I woke up early. I've been you know, My situation has been rough lately. >> Britney, I would like to do some exercises out here to make sure you're safe to drive the car. Can we do that? >> Yes. >> Just follow with my uh your eyes only, okay? Do you have any questions? >> I'm like really shaky. Like, I just got into an accident. Like, >> I know. Do you have any questions regarding that, though? >> No. >> Okay. Well, you can begin if you're ready. >> One. >> Keep your arms at your sides. >> Three. >> Arms at your sides. >> Four. Five. >> Yes. >> Six. Seven. >> Are you willing to do a breath sample? >> I know. >> Okay. I have a lot of the alcohol tubes. I don't want to use I only have one of the drug tubes cuz they're expensive. Are you going to be honest with me what's going to pop up? >> Um Well, I have a question for you. >> Okay. >> In all honesty, so my significant other grabbed me while I was in the car accident with me. He does do >> Got it. >> Um Obviously, we kiss, we make out. Like, we just had sex before we left the place we were at. Is that going to affect like >> to pick up if you used it. >> Well, I mean, he uses it. I don't prefer to use it anymore because >> I know. That's what I'm saying. When did you last take a puff of it? Not even like getting high off of it, just using it a little bit is what I'm asking. >> I I personally don't use it, but I'm by him that uses it. Well, I'm not He doesn't like when I kiss him. That's my concern. That's >> Okay. >> Like >> Are you willing to submit a sample on this? >> Um It's not really fair because he uses it. And it's like you know? >> This one just tests us for alcohol. >> Okay. Yeah, well, yeah, I >> Just keep blowing till you hear a click. Oh. Long steady blow till you hear a click, okay? >> I know. >> Oh. So, you're going to wrap your lips around and go till you hear a blow or you hear a click, okay? Okay. So, you're I don't know you're not >> Can I get I am sorry. I >> [bell] >> I >> You got to do a long steady blow. >> I'm trying. >> Okay. About 1 second. All right. No. You got to go >> This is >> Okay. For the as far as the drug one goes, what's Can we Can we walk over here? Can you follow me? You're scared that that could possibly be in your blood because >> here's the thing. >> because you kissed him. >> Oh my god, I'm like I know. Um I had >> All right, we can go back over there. >> I had been honest with my PO about using this last month. Um >> I'm talking about today, Britney. I need you to be honest with me. >> Not today, but I I had been around I'm on who has. >> So, you're scared that it's going to be in your system, though. >> Well, it's going to be in my system because I I have used it since, you know, and I don't >> When did you use it? >> Um I want to say a week ago, a week and a half ago, somewhere in there. So, it's probably in my system. I was honest with my PO about it, you know, >> All right, Brittany, I'm going to um I'm going to place you under arrest, okay? I think you're showing signs of impairment. I'm going to place you under arrest for that, okay? >> I'm not. >> I know. Can I have you place your hands behind your back for me? >> Well, can I speak to my mother? Can you be careful with my I'm injured. >> Okay. Let's um Yep, yep, yep. Let's Brittany, let's go inside. We'll get you medical treatment. Brittany, let's go get you medical treatment, okay? >> You know, I really I don't want my mom worrying. She's She has a really bad health. Please let me talk to her for a minute. >> It's going to have to be a minute, okay? I have to get this stuff done first. >> Like I don't want Like I'm not impaired right now. I have not >> you think that. I think you are, though. You're showing signs of Okay. >> If anything, I'm going through withdrawal because I haven't had my methadone this morning. Like I'm not >> Okay. >> I'm not using. Like I did mess up about a week ago, and then >> Hey, mistakes happen. >> And I've been honest with my probation about it, and >> Brittany, uh if we're going to keep talking, I have to read you your rights, okay? Can I do that? >> I'll >> Yeah. Can I read that quick? I have to read it, though. I'm just saying your general appearance, it does look like you re- you relapsed pretty hard. >> 41 [ __ ] off, dude. >> No, I haven't. I've used a couple times since I've been out, and I've been honest. I've been doing the NA program. I've been doing the methadone clinic. I've been doing over the phone counseling. I'm in the process of doing CISA. >> 10-4, 10-50 possible. >> I've been offered a couple different jobs. Like, I'm on the right track. I'm actually doing pretty well, and I think you're reading me way wrong. Me way wrong right now. >> Okay. >> Like, I'm in shock. Like, I just had a thing an airbag blow up in my face. My love of my life was just covered in blood. Like, I'm shaking up. And I think that this was kind of an inappropriate time to do a test because I'm not calm. >> taken the test yet for sobriety or >> Yes. >> And was it clean? >> I I There was indicators of impairment. Um so, that's that's the call I made on that. Um >> So, can you tell if it's alcohol or drugs or >> It's not She blew zeros, so there's no alcohol on board. Uh >> Would the drugs be the methadone? >> Um she said she didn't take methadone today. >> today, but here's the thing. It has a half-life. It stays in your system. But also, when I don't take it today, is you start to withdraw at the same time. I just got into a major car accident. I'm shaky. >> Which again is the root of the issue, not the car accident. >> I'm in I'm It's being said that I'm impaired because of it. I've got high blood pressure, high anxiety, and Yeah. >> Britney, a big part of this, too, is I I just interacted with you a couple months ago, and you looked clean, and you looked healthy back then. You You're not looking like that right now. >> My life has been really rough lately. >> I know. >> And but that doesn't mean that I've been out and about using and this and that. I've had a couple oopsey. >> But when I when I talked to you, I didn't even see those track marks on your arms. I mean, they those aren't those don't look old. >> Some of these are from getting peeking troughs at my clinic. >> But they don't do it in a line following the vein is what I'm saying. Like what's going on right there? What is this? Oh, the other way. >> Where? >> Flip your arm up. What is that? >> That? That's from the accident, I think. >> What What are all these going up following the vein? >> That? That's from them trying to hit at the clinic. Like I've had blood tests and other things being done on top of my rushing up, which I've seen medical for at my clinic. >> All right. >> The officers conducted a routine interview with one of the occupants of Britney's vehicle, Jesse, to get some insights on what may have occurred. >> So they came and picked me up and then we they turned around, went back towards Baraboo, um hit a side road cuz they went to go fix the seat, like her seat, cuz it's stuck forward. Like it doesn't want to like go back at all. And so they tried to like fix it or something, but it didn't do anything. So um we were driving down the road and um she I don't know if there was a stop sign at our intersection or not. >> Mhm. >> Um I would believe that there was, um but I like I said, I seen her like go and like hit the brake. Like her whole body her whole body like extended to hit that brake. >> And you literally saw that? >> Yeah, and it it did not do anything. And she literally did it again and nothing happened. >> Okay. >> Um and then she hit that car, my seatbelt flew out in front of me. Um I hit the seat and then I blacked out for a second and when I woke up my hand was completely behind me and it was moving but it wasn't looking like it was in the right position at all. >> Yeah. If you would guess how fast you guys were going when she started slamming on the brakes? >> Um I want to say 40-45. >> Okay. >> Um What? Are the adults and the other people are they okay? Are they alive? >> Everyone's alive, yeah. >> Everyone's alive, okay. Okay, that makes me feel better inside. Uh it seemed like yeah, they hit the we hit that car and then I looked over for a second it was upside down and I was like, "Oh my god, they're dead." >> Have you been having problems with it at all? >> Here and there, yeah. >> Like when did the brakes start acting up? >> Um Well, it's like I don't even know. >> Like do you like have you lost the brakes in the past before where they wouldn't work? >> Um I mean yes, that's not like fully. I'm not talking about like >> Yeah. >> but like loose. >> Yeah. Like they're soft. >> Yeah. Like not like they're just not working. >> Like you have nothing there. >> Right. Right. >> How long has that been going like that? That you I guess know >> That's That's been like an on and off thing. You know. Um >> Since you've owned it or just after you bought it? >> Um after I bought it. >> After? Have you have you ever had taken it to anybody to look at or not? Like your dad or anybody? >> Um, um. Cruise. >> Cruise? >> When officers questioned Brittany about the crash, she claimed that her brakes had malfunctioned, causing her to drive through the stop sign. Given the seriousness of the accident, officers needed to investigate this claim further to determine whether her brakes had actually failed. >> Hello. I wonder if you can help me. I'm Detective Bottom with the Berwick Police Department. I'm following up on Brittany's car. She said she bought it here. >> Okay. Brittany >> Yep. >> Let me see if I got a file. >> She had she bought a blue Toyota Camry a 2003. >> Yeah. It's under her dad's name, right? >> Under her dad's name? >> Let me see if I got a file. Yeah, we just had an internal repair on the car. But I got her on car deal, you know, like they have to inspect them themselves. What are you looking for? If she bought it >> So, they don't have the in-service date? >> Here, but he's got the car dealer on it. >> Because what happened she was in an accident last night. She claims the brakes failed. That she's been having a few issues with it. She had it in here for to get the seat fixed on it. Uh >> The seat was stuck. He had moved all the way back to clean something and we hit it with a hard thing with a hammer and it started working. >> But did she ever make any comment about brakes? >> were fine. We inspected them and did, you know, a preliminary inspection and we always fix whatever, um, so I doubt it had brake issues. >> And >> So, I'm just going to say this, she's pretty sketchy. She wrecked her other car before she got this one. Her dad came in and was in a really quick hurry to buy another >> buy another >> So, I don't know what she's got going on, but she seemed pretty helter-skelter. >> What started as a serious crash quickly turned into an OWI investigation and Britney's decisions that afternoon came with major consequences. She was subsequently arrested and booked into the Sauk County Jail for operating while intoxicated causing great bodily harm and was also cited for failing to stop at a stop sign.
