Sheriff's Office welfare check. When deputies arrived for a welfare check, all they knew was that an 11-month-old boy hadn't been seen in 24 hours. His father claimed that it was a misunderstanding. But as the stories kept changing and the excuses kept fracturing, investigators realized they weren't dealing with a confused parent. They were dealing with a cover up. >> Okay. >> You said that your son Josh is missing. Is that correct? >> John. >> John? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> John, your name? >> Yes. I'm trying to get a hold of Crystal Phillips. This is Deputy Behill with the sheriff's office. We got a call about her missing son. >> I'm Crystal Phillips. >> You're Crystal Phillips. Last night, right before dark, I got him in the stroller dress and stroller with a bottle was taking down and my uh daughter call to the store. >> Okay. Where was this at? Where did they at home and everything and John and his dad? >> Okay. Where did he go missing from? Like when's when's the last time that you saw him? To go get a And that that was the last time that you saw John. >> That was the last time I saw John. I never came back. >> So he left. He came back at around what time? >> Before John When's the last time you saw John? >> An hour ago. >> Where? >> Home. In the trailer. >> You saw him at home at the in the trailers? >> Yeah. I lost him cuz I did not feel safe for my girls that I right now. >> The woman speaking is Crystal Phillips. 24 hours earlier, her partner, John Hannon, took their 11-month-old son and four-year-old daughter for a walk, but returned entirely alone. Crystal locked him out of her trailer in fear, hoping for a simple misunderstanding. But the reality outside her door has already set a much darker investigation into motion. John, this is the San Juan County Sheriff's Office. Come to the door now. We are here for the welfare of your son. We are not here for your warrants. Come out now with your hands up, open, and empty. >> Hey, San County Sheriff's Office. You need to come out. Hands up, open, and empty. John, San County Sheriff's Office, you need to come to the door with your hands up, open, and empty. I'm not here for your warrants. I'm here to check on the welfare safety of John Junior. >> Sheriff's Office. Put your hands up. >> John, sir. Hey, keep your hands where I can see them. John, >> roll over. >> Roll over. >> Roll over. Face away. >> John, sir. >> Okay. Face away from me. What am I going for? >> Why am I sir? I just put you in handcuff. My back is broken, sir. >> My back is broken, sir. I just came out surgery, sir. >> Okay, roll over. >> I want to talk to you. I >> roll over and we'll get you figured out. >> I touch my name. >> Hands behind your back. >> Other hand. My back. >> Okay. Put that other hand back. >> Put your other hand back right now. Other hand. John's money. >> Kevin, I'll pull you this way. Okay. >> Stand up, John. >> My name's like John, right? >> What's your name? >> My name? >> Yo, your name's >> name. >> All right, let's get out of here. I don't have a son, bro. I don't have a son. >> Hey, let's stand up. >> My name is Susan, sir. >> Your name's not Susan. >> Your name's really Susan. >> Hey, let's put our feet underneath us. >> John, >> let's get our feet underneath us. >> Please don't stand up. >> My puppy here. Okay. Where's my >> Where's John at then? >> Let's get out of here. >> Let's get out of here then. I don't We're not going to sit in here forever. >> My dad told me that I have a door to >> Okay, let's get out of here. >> Let's stand up. >> We're going outside. >> Walk this way. My uncle my mom. >> Okay, let's show in the back of the car. I need I have to ask you my dad. My dog. >> Okay, right now you're not being arrested. Okay. >> Why am I being >> What's your name? What What name can I call you? >> My I don't know my name, sir. I don't I don't but I >> Where where is John Junior at? Where is John Junior at? That's where >> I don't have a John Junior, sir. >> Where is your son at? >> I don't have a son. I have a son. I don't need John's son. >> You don't know where Junior's at at all? >> I'm Junior. >> You're a junior. So, where is your son at? The >> I have I can I'm able to have a son, sir. >> Okay. The one you were pushing around in a stroller earlier. >> I know today. >> Me. Where is he at? >> I just John baby John. >> John, listen. >> I'm not John. >> I don't know who I am. You don't live at my property. My my father know I like my name. >> John, where is your son at? >> Where is the 11year-old 10-month-old? >> You were not what you're saying, sir. >> Okay. Well, I know what I'm saying. You were pushing him in a stroller yesterday. Where is he at? Who was that? I didn't see it. >> We need to find your friend here. >> Where is he at? >> He ran with my friend. >> What friend? >> And then Gypsy to the house. You know the address? >> Yeah, I want the address. >> I want his name. I >> He's not your friend. You call him Gypsy? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. Where does Gypsy live? >> I have monster. >> You tell me Gypsy's address right now. Where does Gypsy live? >> 72. This is Gypsy. Is this a man or a woman? >> You don't know which one is? >> I don't know him. He's a servant for doing anything. >> Okay. Hey, can you hang out with him for a second? >> Is there anything in the store? >> No, he's laboring. >> Yeah. >> And that's him. >> Oh, for sure. Him. >> Hey, Sergeant, what time was this? What time was this at? >> Yesterday at 5:00 p.m. >> Okay. So, that's exactly about the time that she said he came home. She said that he left around 4:00 yesterday, came back right when it was dark without John Junior. >> Yeah, she was here until a few hours ago and then she went to go stay with her friend that she won't tell me where he lives. >> But she's But now she's reporting she hasn't seen John Junior since >> last night. Last night. So he's going to take that path to get there. What yard is he going to have to cross? Well, he's probably found her. >> We found Crystal. Do you mind kissing with her? My daughters >> uh sound like she's got her daughters. >> She was to me one thing with my daughters and her her I saw the name by her the son she had go to her neighbor's house. >> Okay. You understand that we're not necessarily worried about your daughters. We know where your daughters are. We do not know where John Jr. is. >> She doesn't have a John Junior. That's what I'm saying. And sometimes she's officially my kids. I gave birth to those girls. >> John, you got to help me out. >> I don't know if you really don't think that you have a son named John Junior, but you definitely do. He's almost a year old. And I just passed out. I saw last time was a few days ago and I want to hear his name and he goes, "Yo, yeah, tells me around." And I tell kids right there. I'm the one that takes care of legit cuz she's my I put her back in the hospital and she he takes advantage and tells me things, but I can't I just scared. We're scared of him. >> He's so hard to follow. He's so incoherent. But he's coming around like admitting that he there is a John Jr. and >> well ad too. >> He said something about a guy that lives by some sign that says Tri City Records. Does that sound familiar at all? Somewhere in this area. >> Oh, but the truck that they're out with right now is registered to Richard Hair, 1200 Pixie Lane. >> Okay. >> We haven't dealt with the house in a while, but it's probably a little before your time, but that used to be a big swap house. >> Okay. >> Arrest a lot of people out there and a lot of people died from overdoses in that house. So, he's alluding that to there's he's saying that Crystal gave John Jr. a couple days ago, which his timeline's all messed up cuz he's saying he got out of the hospital a month ago, and he's saying he went on this walk with the daughter a week ago. So, his timeline's a little messed up, but he is saying that Crystal gave the uh John Jr. to this unidentified guy that supposedly has something to do with this Tri City Records place. When I was on the phone with mom, with Susan, his mom, she's seems to be like, she was saying that she believed that there might be a male that has something to do with the the son being missing, with John Junior being missing. She had like a partial license plate from the guy. Uh she said that it's one of Crystal's friends that she doesn't know and John doesn't know. >> What was the partial plate? >> I'll have to get I'll have to call her back up and get it for >> Hello, Susan. So, we found John. He is completely uh not of the right state of mind right now. He's incoherent. He has no clue. He's denying that he doesn't have a that he even has a son. But he keeps mentioning one of Crystal's male friends that he doesn't know. And I think this might be the guy that you were talking about that you had that license plate for. Is there any way you can give me that license plate again? >> We're going to do everything that we can. We promise you. Okay. Oh god. Roll on my back. Tell me to walk. I back street. I have metal on my back. >> What did you say? >> I have metal on my back. Certainly on my back. Do you? You, sir. >> Okay. Do you need to lay down? >> No. I need to put it down your side. You need to take care of me. The people that take care of me with I have on >> Who drives who drives an old pickup truck around? Is that Gypsy or is that the other friend of your of Crystals? What color is it? like copper or brown like a light brown. >> That's >> That's the guy that has your son. >> Gypsy out of him. >> That's Gypsy. >> That's the guy that took her life for a while. >> Hey, take a breath. Okay, we're going to get this all sorted out. >> Okay, take take a breath, John. We'll get this sorted out right here. >> Okay, you just need to be honest with us. All right, I'm going to leave I'm going to leave you in here for a little bit. Okay, honestly. Hello, sir. Hey, >> this is Crystal back here. >> Yes. >> Okay. Do you go by the name of Gypsy? >> No, I go by the name of John. >> Okay. >> Why? >> Cuz there's a guy named being thrown around by Gypsy by um John Senior. And he's very hard to make sense of right now. And I'm trying to figure out >> that boy is so [ __ ] scene between slapping and beating the [ __ ] out of her and throwing her and the kids out of the thing. [music] I just get tired. I told pick your stuff up. We'll bring you to the house for the night. Hey, um Crystal, let's get you out of here uh real fast cuz we're we want to talk with you real. Okay. >> That boy's [ __ ] real threat for her kids. >> Well, we're not going to we're not going to put them back together tonight. That's for sure. >> Putting them back together be nuts. And putting the kids around him is nuts. >> Well, the kids aren't going to be left with him. >> No, that boy is a bed bug. >> I don't think the kids should have ever been left. >> No, I don't know why. >> Crystal, let's get out cuz we got some questions for you. Okay. >> Hey, real quick. Crystal, can I confirm some of your information that I got earlier? >> John is saying something about >> obviously, like I said, he's very incoherent right now, but he's mentioning something about like some guy that he doesn't know who. He don't know anything. >> No, he's he's like making up. He's been like this all day. >> Okay. It's a guy that he's saying >> a ghost or something. >> It's a guy that he's saying is driving around like a older copper Ford pickup truck. >> I haven't seen one of that. >> Okay. Okay. >> I don't know where exactly he's getting that from. It's that truck right there. I don't know if you can see that truck at all. Does that truck look familiar to you at all? >> Not at all. >> No. >> Okay. >> That's the back of it there. Seems like an older model Ford pickup truck. >> You want me? >> Okay. So, he's cla he, like I said, he's very incoherent. He's hard to understand. Part of the time he's claiming that you're his mom and you take care of him. And then the other half of the time you're saying he does not have a son. Like you guys do not have a son at all. Just just John Junior. He left it on [music] your daughters as well. >> John Junior and Lala. >> Yeah. I put >> That's Skyla, right? Lala is Skyla. >> Yeah, we call it Lala for sure. >> Um I literally put Junior in the in the for him. >> Okay. Park him up, gave him his bottle and put a blanker and uh Sean Shocker as a blanker for him and blank over to the wind blowing. >> Okay. Okay. And then Skyler just walked with him. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Okay. >> Yeah. I'm trying to tell her she where her brother is. He's dead. So I was trying to understand which way they went. >> But she can't. >> Oh. >> Okay. Which one is Skyville? Mommy ask me the bigger one. The bigger one. No, we could just follow. >> I just want to see if she could she fit in that st Did Did John come? >> Did John come back with >> I know. I know. >> Did John come back with the stroller? >> No. >> John can't get there. He comes back himself. >> So, he didn't come back with the stroller. >> He did not come back with the stroller. >> He only came back with walked in. He walked in and I was like, I see that. I Where's Junior? She's like with my mom. I I'll try to surprise you. >> Okay. >> I was like, "What?" "Oh, well." After I said, "No, all day. We don't need a babysitter. I want to kill my son." And then he got all mad and he literally told me he called his mom turn around >> three times. >> And that's what that's what his story was that his mom came and picked John Jr. up. >> She did not. But that's what he that's what he told you. >> Yeah. >> That's what he was saying was John uh Susan came to pick John Jr. up. >> Yeah. >> Does he have a phone? Does John have a phone? >> Does John have a phone with him that he usually takes? >> He had a phone with him yesterday, >> but I can't find her. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, him in the stroller. H >> John Junior in the stroller never came back. >> She's saying she has nothing to do with this and she was crying over the phone. She does not know what's going on. I'm crying all Yeah, I'm not saying mom's about as incoherent as he is. >> I spoke with her over the phone. She sounded decently sounded real in that case. >> Okay. Well, I think she's just as worried as everybody else is right now. >> What? John, I can't hear you. >> No, you're coming with us cuz we have some questions for you. Um, some questions that someone else is going to ask you. Okay. >> All right, John. We're going to talk to the detective. Let's jump out of the car. I got I >> um Yeah, you can put in the front. Is that okay? Be cool. >> Over the next several hours, deputies track down Hannon's shifting narrative, including the man he called Gypsy, who turns out to be a friend protecting Crystal from Hannon's abuse. None of his alibis hold up. By the time the detective steps into the interrogation room, investigators are no longer just asking questions. They are boxing in a suspect in his own undeniable contradictions. >> Detective Salazar. Okay. >> Yes, sir. >> Do you know why you're here? [clears throat] >> Yes, sir. >> Why? Why you here? >> The thing the thing about it is I'm thinking to the son and they said this is you have you have a son that son. I'm the son. >> You're the son. >> Yes, sir. >> You're Crystal's son. >> Yes, sir. >> That doesn't make sense. That is You can't be Crystal's son. >> I'm not Crystal. >> I know you're not Crystal. >> Crystal [snorts] has a son. >> Crystal doesn't have a son. My wife think she she know I was either I see her I think I s she I don't know everything I don't know she was really she really me one Yeah. >> Did you understand what I read to you? >> No. >> You don't understand? >> Yeah, I understand. You want me to ask a question? But I will ask a person, but I ask my question is if you have to take care of me and my >> listen. Okay. Go ahead. >> Cuz it's very serious. >> I know that. >> So to So listen. >> Yes, sir. >> John. >> Yes, sir. >> Where? >> I don't know. Based on what we're we're learning, you were the last one to see him. >> No. No. For real. >> So, you're saying you do not have a child with Crystal? She I do have one with her. Yes. No. No. No. No. That's what I'm saying. We're trying to find She has a manship, but she has some sons, bro. She has four. She has one, two, three sons. She has his baby. This and that. Is the baby still alive? >> The baby's in the house. >> Is it in the house? >> I think it's in It's a trailer. This guy Bob lives, right? Hold on. I look at Bob walking over here. I see Bob. I saw this guy. It's Bob here in front. You know, I come out. I said, "Hey, give me that ammo." You know, I saw her hand baby trailer black and white trailer. You mean >> when was that? Whenever she said she get away baby before she I saw her baby switch her baby I saw baby there and she and then said where's the baby I said I just you know she I saw you I think right now right >> John >> and she mean you know >> that doesn't make sense >> I saw her get the baby to the >> Then why are you telling me that the baby was being watched by your mom. Honestly, bro, I have a mom. Come here. >> No, cuz I think you're lying to me, John. [snorts] >> Officer. >> Huh? >> Tell me. >> How am I How are you lying? Because you're telling me two different stories about what happened to this baby. >> I saw her baby to somebody. I don't know who. >> Okay. Then why did you tell me that the baby was being watched by her mom? >> No, she told me. She said, "Where's the baby?" I said I thought you said you told you said your sister you said my mom came or your mom her sister mom came I thought you said my mom came down early so asked me I saw I they was there and then I saw him at the door >> so you're not going to >> Why are you seen pushing a stroller on cameras down the road? >> Okay. I was saying my daughter and >> who's your daughter? My daughter's and the other daughter doesn't matter too. >> So if I go watch that video, it's going to show you pushing your daughter in a stroller. It's not going to show me anything else. >> Absolutely. >> And what if I see something else? >> Me and having that baby sometimes I just do thing. I don't know. Go set up. Why? I don't mind you. That's what I'm saying. >> We're going to hang out in this hallway. Okay. Daddy's apartment. Want to see me? Okay. [clears throat] >> My dad, >> I don't know your dad, dude. >> No. >> So, so >> I'm looking for Junior, bro. >> The game. >> Okay. Go ahead and take a seat. I'll come talk to you in a minute. But you know what I'm saying? >> No, I don't know what you're saying. >> I said I tr and that's her. >> I'll ask about it then. >> Take a seat. Darn it. >> It's the same phone too cuz it says whatever on there. And you have your gloves on. You have your gloves on. >> What What uh sizes are? It looks like it's a kid. We're having a hard time tracking up here because it's just it's just this is like a walking trail like like people walk up here quite often, you know, and so it's freaking difficult as [ __ ] But the only thing that sticks out are these, you know, the phone, the stroller, um, and the clothes. Um, we could probably pull that IMEI number off that, you know, off the phone. Um, and then, you know, get it, you know, figure out who it is. But I'm I'm I'm willing to bet my life, my retirement that that's his phone. You know what I mean? Like, it's it's just too coincidental. Like, I'm show you a couple of photos and see if you recognize them. Okay. >> Do you recognize that? >> Yes. That's his phone. >> That's his phone? >> Yeah. Where was it? >> Okay. It's just like kind of out in the middle of nowhere. What? >> But they found it. >> Um, do you recognize any of that? >> Yeah. >> Is that what or was is that just something that he owns? >> Yeah. He randomly just dashes stuff everywhere. The blanket was on. >> That blanket was on. Okay. What about any of the other clothes? >> That's her coat. >> That's her coat. >> Yeah. um >> jacket. >> Yes, that's John's jacket, too. >> He also had um >> that's John's jacket. >> Yeah, that's John's jacket. >> And that's the baby's blanket. And then that's sky sky. >> He also had a a motocross pants on, too. You never came on came home with those on. >> Motocross pants. John, >> where was that? >> I don't I wasn't out there, so I'm not sure exactly where it is. >> I thought like a step closer. Yeah. >> How has John been paying for his drugs? >> Huh? >> How has John been paying for the drugs? His drugs. >> Who did he get them from? >> H >> who does he get them from? >> John? >> Yeah. Where does he get Where does he get his drugs? >> I don't know. I have no idea. He keep behind my back. And there are times where I'm like, "Okay." Yeah. Yeah. He asked different >> and sir I don't I'm sorry we haven't been introduced. I'm Detective Salazar. How do you know the family? >> Uh from Durango. Oh, >> you're from Durango? >> No, I'm from Albuquerque. >> Okay. And how did you get involved today? >> How did I get involved today? She called me tell me she needed some help. Now he's beat and I went over the house and he had it all gaffled up against the top of the [ __ ] countertop, you know, up on the cupboards. >> Yeah, >> I gaffled him up and choked him out trailer. >> Well, he was pacing back and forth um right where I split. >> Where did we confirm that though? We were like, "Yeah, that's his." Was it on the other side? Yeah, it was on the other side. >> All right, I'm going to move this. She said he was wearing a yellow shirt. So, I showed him I showed him this and he's and she's freaked out and she said that's all he was wearing where like the hill starts to slope down. >> Okay. So, she got the one shoe from the property and couldn't find the other one and that's why we think the other shoe was still there. >> Yes. He he was not wearing shoes whenever he was arrested. >> Okay. Um, do you think that >> we need to hold off until you guys finish doing your thing there to see if we need to add anything else into the search warrant? >> Um, just call me whenever you're like thinking about sending it to Sarge and if I've thought about anything in the meantime, I'll just coming down. >> I'm just thinking if there's any kind of a weapon used at all that maybe it could have made its way back to the house. So, >> right. I'll let you know. The interrogation stalls out against Hannon's fabricated confusion, but the physical evidence tells the story he refuses to. Off camera, the medical examiner would later confirm a devastating truth. 11-month-old JJ suffered a severe skull fracture, and forensic evidence suggested he was placed into the freezing earth while still breathing. know if they were here. >> Yeah, there's been a lot of traveling through there. >> You guys look down all over there. >> Yeah, there was a set of red uh red pants right at the base of that tree right there. >> His pants that I guess he was seen wearing when he left. >> Mom said >> Dad. >> Mhm. >> Yeah. Mom says uh he was wearing some like motocross pants. Whenever he came back, he wasn't wearing them and that's what they were. And then a little bit further down there was a what looked like a little girl's long sleeve sleeve shirt, like a maroon color with little foxes on it. And then an adult's extra-L large white short sleeve shirt closer to about this is actually 22 ft and 3 in exactly from >> little girl's clothes fit the size of the little girl. Uh, I didn't look at the size, but they lift about. >> Well, the best I know to do now is to get the baby out of the dirt and then look at it. So, do you guys want to clean? You want to scratch around the surface and look for stuff? >> Um, >> I need to go get my gloves, but I don't want to just plop the baby out. Do you have them in your bag? >> Yeah. I'll just uh I'll just open it up, lay it out just a little bit where it's real small and and unzip it. It should unzip without opening it all the way up. >> Okay. >> I don't want to move too much of it, but you know, that's that's something. This side of his head doesn't bother me so much because it's kind of where his head was down. >> That could be liber. There's definitely a mark here and like right there. I think what do you think? You need anything else? >> I want to try and see behind his ears, but >> yeah, I would like to look inside of his mouth, too. But if I start manipulating everything then you know so they'll get good photos of that cuz you know if it's torn inside there. >> Will he still be sent down today or tomorrow? >> It'll it'll he'll go down today but the autopsy will be tomorrow for sure. We'll let the doctors cleaning look at him cuz I can't I don't feel anything really on his head. I can feel his soft spot, so it doesn't feel damaged right there, but it's kind of tough. What do you guys do when you've come across like deaf people and stuff? >> Depends. I've written stuff on notepads and >> because, you know, my son's deaf and we always wonder, we have him seat belt covered that says he's deaf and stuff like that. Just I've written on on paper just put your butt down. >> Hey, >> all right. So, we're going to sit you up. Okay, >> John. We're going to go to your butt and to your butt and ready. 1 2 3 up. Come on, John. John, what are we doing, bud? Hey, you said you'd be chill, right? >> Sit down. Please. >> Okay. Well, let's sit down. >> Let's get you somewhere stable, right? >> Yeah. you back. Okay. >> Did you hit John Junior? >> [ __ ] good. No, I didn't hit John. We hit John J. We both got hit at the same time. >> Did you Did you smother? Did you put something over his mouth? >> No, I did not. No. >> No. But FGO FGO FGO FGO FGO did you squeeze John Junior? >> No, you know, >> was John Junior alive when you put him in the dirt? >> No. >> He was dead when you put him in the dirt. >> We're both Can I Can I >> John Junior? >> Anyway, >> yeah. What do you call John? What do you What do you call him? >> Junior. >> Junior. Okay. Blanket over Junior. >> I do not I'm next to John right now. Fact. We don't that one. We both know that. >> I don't see John Junior right now. >> I'm John. >> You're John. John Hannon senior. >> Nope. Nope. Cuz this is John John. >> This is a junior. >> I just told me kiss her. >> Who is this? >> Say John. [clears throat] >> No. >> Well, you and he l too. >> Sit down now. >> This is John Jr. Okay. That is John Jr. He's not dead. >> He is dead. We're both dead. >> You're going to sit back up. You're going to sit back up, John. Sit down. >> Sit down. Okay. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> What did you throw him? >> No. Did you? >> I haven't done anything damn thing to him or him or nothing around here. >> I haven't been in I section. >> You were the last person with John. >> I haven't been in the section. When I talk to other people that know you, they say that you haven't always been like this. Have you ever had like a brain injury? >> What happened? >> Two. What? >> What caused the injuries? >> What? >> What? What caused your brain injuries? >> Application. >> Application. Yeah. story. >> Even when confronted with a photograph of his deceased son, Hannon clings to this fractured act, trying to blur the line between incompetence and murder. But the most damning evidence wouldn't come from an interrogation room. It would come weeks later from a medical housing unit where Hannon made the mistake of whispering the truth to another inmate. >> Yeah, that's where I meant with it. >> So, um, basically I'll just tell you what I know. All I know is that you had, you know, mentioned that John spoke with you, right? >> And that he had mentioned something about the case. That's really all I know right now. >> Okay. Yeah. He we had some conversation through the cell door. So, um, I'm in medical. He was in SP, turtle shoot, they call it, green suit. So, he was locked up in in there. He had made some statements about he was going to he wanted to go to Las Vegas where the food was better >> and um you know and like so so he would like come to the door and talk and then like come back and then like whisper [ __ ] >> you know like talk really really really really quiet and it was hard for me to hear him some sometimes but um you know he said some things that was pretty plain that uh that he was wearing that that he had that he he dug the hole with his hands >> you know he said he say he was going to go back and move the kid, but uh because he wasn't able to get in deep enough or something like that. Okay. >> It's pretty bad bad stuff. >> You remember what day this was? How long ago? >> So, um it was one day was on the 5th of April. >> Okay. >> Text I went in right away and I and I wrote and I wrote I wrote it down. >> Mhm. >> And then one was on April 1st. >> So, April 1st and then April 5th. >> Yeah. >> During this whole time, are you guys the sales next to each other? >> No. No, no. So, I'm out on my hour out. >> Okay. >> I'm out on my hour out and um I had recognized him from I had met him over at Heather Herren's house here. >> Okay. >> Um he'd been over there a couple times and then uh at another residence just with a friend of mine. >> When did you get put into medical? >> Um March. >> Sometime in March. >> Yeah. >> So sometime in March you get put into medical. Your your guys' cells aren't next to each other, but while you're on your hour route, he talks to you. >> Yeah. Okay. >> Yeah. Yeah. Because he he was loud at night, >> you know, he was loud yelling and and and you know, such things like that. And and I would go by the by the cell and be like, "Hey, man. I think you could, you know, maybe keep you down a little bit, trying to sleep just right over there." And you know, so that's how some of the conversation started. >> Um he's like, "Oh, you know, I know you." And I I recognized him. >> And then I seen the the thing on the news. >> Yeah. >> You know, so then I was like, "Oh, man." He told me that like the kid was crying. >> The kid was crying and he couldn't get it. He couldn't get the kid to quiet. He did say that he had hit the kid in in the head that there was a yellow shirt he took off. He didn't want the kid to be seen like a flag. He said it was it would have been like pointer, >> you know. Um >> I don't know if that makes any sense if you guys, but um >> it does. Yeah, >> it does. Um, and basically just that that's really it, you know, like that that he had that the kid wouldn't stop crying, that he ended up hitting the kid, and then um he basically dug a hole for the kid with, you know, he said he used his hands and that he was going to try to get to um Las Vegas because, you know, he shouldn't try to act like he's Crazy. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> So, >> cuz he would go to the normal he would like go like like like when he was telling me this stuff >> conversation. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know what if like if he just trying to get it off his chest or or what or or what the deal was. >> He would like go from like being back there like talking to me like really low like that and telling me these things to >> to coming up to right right up to the window and just acting crazy. >> Okay. >> And I was like, man, this ain't going to happen. the same this this this guy, >> you know, I >> and whenever he's like acting crazy because I I kind of know what you're talking about because I've spoken with him. Um what are kind of like what is he doing? What are his mannerisms? Like >> so when when he's acting crazy, he'll be like uh he'll talk about this guy, this other person, uh I forget the name that he uses, but like he's a real badass and he's going to come down here and he's got cigarettes. He's going to give me the cigarettes that he out of his property whenever whenever he gets out. And he's got >> um whenever I get out that he wants me to have all the money that's in his pocket and and he's got a expensive lighter and things like that. Just >> he's like yapping >> just yapping about senseless [ __ ] It is crazy. He's you're going to take the to paint on food to a little baby, >> right? I can see how hearing something like that is is like can't live with yourself knowing and then not saying it. No, >> there's no way. I have kids. I I have kids. >> Yeah, it all honestly that all kind of makes sense. So, him kind of I don't know if he's dropping his facade, you know what I mean? >> That he's >> he said that he hit whenever he said he hit the kid like that. >> Did he make that motion with his hand? >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Okay. Yeah. Like I said, like >> Cool. I really appreciate it, man. >> Yeah. Yep. No problem. >> We'll just give you a quick break. I uh we may come back and ask a couple more questions. So, but >> All right. Cool. >> John Hannon's attempt to manipulate the legal system ultimately unraveled following the recovery of 11-month-old JJ. Hannon was formally charged by the San Juan County Sheriff's Office with firstdegree felony child abuse, resulting in death along with tampering with evidence. The cruelty, however, did not end that night. Court records reveal Hannon had a lengthy history of escalating domestic violence, and Crystal had previously sought an order of protection to keep her family safe. While held at the San Juan County Detention Center, awaiting a court-ordered competency evaluation, perfectly mirroring the strategy he confessed to, Hannon accumulated seven additional charges, including multiple counts of battery on peace officers after violently attacking detention staff and kicking a district judge. The justice system is built to determine who is truly broken by mental illness and who is simply using it as a shield. The lasting tragedy here isn't just the loss of an 11-month-old boy. It's the reality of a fractured household that slipped through the cracks, leaving a grieving mother to navigate the unimaginable fallout of trust weaponized against her. Do you believe a suspect's attempt to fake insanity during an arrest should be presented to the jury as absolute proof of their calculated guilt? A mother's intuition started the search, but a father's performance couldn't keep the truth buried. There are some tragedies that demand to remain on public record, no matter how heavy they are.
