On July 25th, 2023, deputies from the Mckenry County Sheriff's Office noticed a vehicle that had broken down on the side of the road. Behind the wheel was 41-year-old William E. Gilbert, who had been traveling from Walkage to Mckenry. One of the deputies who was assisting William was a K-9 unit and soon realized that the suspect might be hiding illegal substances. Here you go, William. Thank you very much, sir. Just overheating now. Stop. I just I just put the board in, but this cat was hard to put back on. Gotcha. Where were you coming from? Anywhere good? Huh? Where were you coming from? I came from uh I was visiting with a friend and I was at my girlfriend house out here in Mc and he'll be hooking up. Okay. She'll come soon. Okay. Thank y'all so much. Yep. No problem. Do you want us to stand by with you or anything? It doesn't matter. want to try to push. That's what I was thinking of. Maybe I get circulation or something. Yeah. Something going to Yeah, it just overheat. No, it didn't overheat. Just it stopped out of like nowhere. Out of nowhere. Then the steering wheel had locks. I as I could [Applause] paint it coming from Mckenry though the tow. Yeah, they said they straight down here by uh what street? Oak. Where does your girlfriend live? You sure? Okay. Well, I'm one of the K9 guys. You're parked on the roadway here. So, I'm just going to walk my dog around the car real quick. All right. Walk your dog around the car. All right. If you just want to step over here with my partner [Applause] anywhere, right? Anywhere. People smoke in a car or around your car. Marijuana gets anywhere. Okay. So, even worried about me. Give me. So I'm tell your dog get this. If you're pretty confident your dog's going to hit you, right? Is there anything other than Okay, William, you're you're making us real nervous here. You got Oh, no. No. That's I'm I'm saying that that's him. the truck that just went past. He had a car in there. Do you have anything in your pocket? What's this? My water. You just see him, man. I didn't know I know what you said. All right, I'm just going to run around. Have you smoked weed there today? Yes, sir. I don't smoke. I don't smoke. The people I beat with smoke. Like my girls smoke weed. Okay. Everybody else smoke. I don't smoke. Okay. Take me to a piss right now. I don't smoke. I understand you're concerned about there's nothing other than the vehicle that's illegal. No. Okay. So, would you give us consensus or certainly going to roll the dog anyway? I'm I'm just asking you cuz I I know you're concerned about the dog. I'm asking you cuz I said he'll go ahead and walk. Okay. What about consent? Do you give us consent, sir? No. The fourth amendment protects citizens against unlawful searches. However, in this case, there is more than enough probable cause that William is indeed carrying illegal substances in his car. This allows officers to conduct a search legally without a warrant. Heat. Heat. Out out. Come on. Sure. [Applause] There's nothing in there. We need to go back. Take them again. You're not going to tell us how to do our job. I'm just You just said people smoking here all day. Yeah, they do. You just told us before the dogs get hit in the car. They do. I don't. So, did you Did you see anything out in open view? I know your windows are the dog cuz people smoke the car or whatever you're saying and there's nothing in there then okay then okay you yourself said the dog's going to hit on the car that's what he's saying yeah and that's and that's what he that's what he did for can I don't know and if there's nothing in there but cannabis then so be it'll be all right okay so I didn't see him hitting nothing that's fine it's only body cam you got body cams say this okay William not going to discuss this right now No, no, no. Listen. This is We're not going to discuss it. This is what I'm saying, right? So, if your dog come right here, right, and hit right here. What's right here? Cuz I seen him hit right here. I see your dog hit right here. Okay. So, what's right here? He did not hit right there. Yes, he did. I'm telling you. Okay. You're going to stand over here. So, look, William, listen to me. I'm telling you. I'm telling you. We're going to search your car. That's illegal. Okay. Well, that's that's your determination. All right. It's not my determination. You're parked on the roadway. How? So, look. I've been sitting here, right? Hold on. Hold on. Listen to this. We're done talking. No, no, no. Listen. If If you done talking, right, just hear this, right? So, look. How long have you been sitting there? I don't know. I don't have a stopwatch. How long have you been sitting there? You said your toe was right down the road. Yes. And how long have you been sitting there before you finally went and got a dog? Why does that matter? Because look, my my d my due process right, okay, right now is violated because you've been right here and with a dog. Listen listen, I'm done listening to you. We can't we can't run our dogs without backup anyway. He you have backup. One, two, one, wait for me to get here. You was here. Number two, we can continue to discuss this over here. You was here. You and I can continue to discuss this. Listen, listen. If you here, if you here, he here, right? William, we're done talking now. Stay over there. Listen, listen. You're going to handcuff. I'm not. Listen, listen. I'm not just for our safety. Our safety. I'm going back over here. Look. Look. I'm going back. I'm right here at this point. For our safety, I'm right here. Look. I'm done. I'm done, sir. I'm done. I'm done. Look, my hands is up. Stop. My hands are up. For what? For what? Stop. For what? For our safety. For what? For our safety. For my safety. You want to get bit? For my safety. What about my safety? For your safety. I haven't done nothing. Get down on the ground. Get down on the ground. [Applause] Get down on the ground, William. You're going to get bit. 120. You're going to get bit. A dog. Where you going to go? Armory. He ain't going anywhere. You're coming out of the car one way or another. Locking himself in his vehicle heavily favors the deputies. Not only has William managed to trap himself in a nonfunctional car, but his movements are now restricted as well. This allows deputies to surround the vehicle and put an end to William's antics. William, break the window. Do it yourself. Do it yourself or we'll do it for you. We're going to break the window if you don't come out. And if you don't come out, you're getting bent. Yeah. [Music] Okay. Yeah, I did. You know why? Cuz you're running away. Okay. Sure, William. You can believe it. Come out. Put your hands behind your back. Unlock the door. Unlock the door. Unlock the door. Unlock the door. William, you want us to break your window? Yes or no? Unlock the door. I'm coming out. I'm coming out. Right here. Behind your back. Behind your back. I'm behind your back. I'm not I'm not You want yours? Come on. Thank Come on. Come on. You got my leg. You're hot. I know. I'm not. You're wrong. How? How? I was. They just tried to trip me. They just [Music] want to get in the car. I appreciate that. I want to make sure you have new weapons before you get in the car though cuz I don't want to get stabbed. Okay. Got some lucky. Don't get in the car yet. We're not ready for you to go in. William's reluctance to be searched and his push for the officers to put him in the back of the cruiser as soon as possible indicates that he is hiding something. He is willing to do anything to prevent this search from happening. I want to be I don't That means you have something you're not supposed to talk about. Let's back up. We went to the station anyway. Listen, you're not in control of the situation. I am. I don't want to be out here. Make sure that you don't have any weapons. I don't know. Once I confirm that you have any weapons, you sit down. We're not going to ruin you. We're not going to hurt you. But with you're not going to get hurt. You're not supposed leg. Yeah, that's what I thought. That would be something supposed to have. Got to take your shoes off. Take your shoe off. That's why you ran. Yeah. You in the car. That's what I told you. Like I'm not You got a thing in your booty hole. tracking anything. Sit. Watch your head. Sit. Can I get my ID? Well, we'll get it to you. Just have a seat for now. We discuss this. Everything's on body cam. We're not going to take your ID money. Williams attempts to prevent the drugs from being found would result in one of the deputies being injured. Additionally, while officers did find a packet of drugs hidden in his socks, most of the drugs that William was charged for would only be found after a search of his vehicle was initiated. [Music] Ultimately, William Gilbert was charged with manufacturing or delivery of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, manufacturing or delivery of heroin, possession of heroin, manufacturing or delivery of cocaine, manufacturing or delivery of fentinyl, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, resisting a peace officer causing injury, and obs. obstructing a peace officer. After his initial court hearing in Mckenry County, William was held on a $250,000 bond. However, he was soon released after a family member posted 10% of this amount. Hope you enjoyed today's video.
