On September 10th, 2023, an officer with the Englewood Police Department attempted to stop a gold Volvo station wagon after discovering the vehicle was displaying fictitious license plates that belonged to a different vehicle. >> [music] >> The driver initially slowed, but then accelerated and fled northbound, prompting the officer to initiate a pursuit through Englewood and into Clayton, Ohio. The suspect vehicle hits that car, careens off that car, and hits two pedestrians walking. Uh one of which is I'm I'm sure she's deceased. Oh, [ __ ] Yeah. Yeah. So, wait. She's going north on Main Street. A car was turning from Main onto Sweet Potato? Yes. Like >> From which direction? Uh from south to north. Going to make that left-hand turn. The The woman in that car said, "I could hear the sirens, but I didn't know where they were, so I was just turning left to get, you know, onto, you know, make my turn." And then the suspect vehicle hit her, careened off of her, and then hit the people walking. Was the suspect vehicle hitting her from behind and was trying to go around her? Hit her right broadside, driver's side door. So, as she was making the left As she was making the left turn, he basically was trying to pass her on the left and hit her. T-boned her, yeah. >> Left side. Yep. And then went off of there, hit two people, and then they and then ended up stuck in the car, jumped out and ran. We've got a perimeter set up. Uh both of the detectives, I've had them called to come out. Uh and uh Drew's on his way, and Michael probably on his way as well. Okay. And so, we've got two pedestrians. Do we know the ages of the pedestrians yet? Not yet. We'll have to get all that from the firefighters if they have it. I don't believe they might even have it. Um So, the suspect The suspect vehicle hit the two pedestrians? >> Yes. The suspect vehicle careened off of the white car that was going to make a left-hand turn, and it got T-boned, went off of the white car, the Volvo went off the white car into the curb and hit the people walking, and then went up and hit a uh uh uh front porch of a house. Okay. And how many people got out of the car? I believe just one. Just the driver. Yeah, I've only gotten information on one person. What's that? Do you know if they're okay? No, she's not. Well, I mean, she's not physically hurt, but Yeah, yeah, no, yeah, no, yeah, she's not physically hurt, but she's she's she watched them both get hit. She's not Right. Okay. Additional officers responded to the area and began establishing a perimeter to locate the two suspects who had fled on foot. Officers secured the crash scene and avoided approaching the suspect vehicle to preserve evidence while awaiting the arrival of a K9 unit. Dispatch also received reports from nearby residents indicating that two men had been seen running through backyards in the neighborhood. A K9 unit was requested to conduct a track from the crash site. Eagle with 311, Perry K9 starting a search at 605 North Main. 20 this way. Yep. HEY, GET DOWN! GET DOWN! GET ON THE GROUND! Jesus, man. It's like it's floating. The crash resulted in five people being transported to the hospital, including both pedestrians, the driver of the Toyota, and the two suspects. One of the pedestrians, 71-year-old Marie Hanson of Englewood, later died from the injuries she sustained in the crash. Roy Crackel admitted to using fentanyl after being discharged from the hospital. He was transported to the Montgomery County Jail on active warrants. Medical personnel observed a seatbelt abrasion across Walter Ilowski's chest and shoulder, an injury consistent with being the driver in a vehicle collision. This observation was documented by both medical staff and officers at the hospital. Ilowski, who did not have a valid driver's license, tested positive for fentanyl, amphetamine, xylazine, and methamphetamine. Following the investigation conducted by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Walter Douglas Ilowski was indicted on multiple charges, including involuntary manslaughter, aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, failure to comply with a police officer and multiple drug-related offenses. In April 2025, Alawski was sentenced in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court to a prison term of 19 to 24 and 1/2 years. He was also given a lifetime driver's license suspension and ordered to pay restitution. Authorities stated that Alawski was under the influence of multiple drugs at the time of the pursuit and crash, which ultimately led to the death of Marie Hanson and injuries to several others.
