All right. Go ahead and give me your excuse why there's dogs with on top of blankets sitting in a car with black leather in it in the middle of summertime in the heat. How long have they been sitting here? >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> It's not cool. It's a problem. >> You're all need to come and help find a program or home. >> Okay. >> On July 4th, 2023, officers responded to a local apartment complex after reports of two dogs being locked inside a hot vehicle for hours. I looked it up and it was reported to have reached 90° that day. After speaking to the couple, this was not their first time doing this. >> Hi there. How's it going? Hi. Do y'all have a Do y'all have a Silver Ford Explorer? >> No. >> No. Okay. Thank you. Sorry. For some reason, in this apartment, they were saying that it or did y'all call about a dog in a car or anything or anything like that? Okay. All right. Thank you. [Music] >> Hey, puppies. Hey. Hey. You okay? You are dripping. Are you have water? Anything like that? Is there water in there, buddy? [ __ ] I thought we were going to get you out in just a second. Hey, you What's the deal with your dog sitting in a hot ass car? They are panning. They are literally have no water in there. They're in a hot car. The window over there, it's That dog is dripping sweat. How long have they been sitting out here? >> See, I don't have an answer for that, but >> Yeah, you don't have an answer for it. Them dogs could have a stroke in there. Let's get them out, please. I said you calm down and hear me out. >> No, I'm not going to calm down and hear you out. How long have they been sitting in there? >> Make sure you have a leash so they can get out. >> Are these both your dogs or is this your the other dog? Is this your Is one of these your dogs? >> These are my dogs. >> Both of them are. You good, bro? >> What? >> No, I'm just >> I was trying to explain to him. You don't >> All right. Go ahead and give me your excuse why there's dogs with on top of blankets sitting in a car with black leather in it in the middle of summertime in the heat. How long have they been sitting here? >> Sir, >> you have nowhere else to go. Okay. Again, the dogs can't be sitting in the car. >> No. No. He He's visiting. >> Okay. But that doesn't matter, though. They cannot be sitting in a hot car in the middle of summer in the heat. >> No. Not even just for not all. Oh, they don't sit in in the car all day. >> How long have they been sitting in there? >> Uh, I think he I think he left them out there for uh cuz he went to work and uh So, how long they think they've been in there for? >> I can't really give the time. >> Can't give you the time. So, we're going to sit here with the dogs and cuz apparently this is not the first time this is this has happened. >> So, that's Apparently there has been calls before the courtesy officer has told me there's been multiple calls about dogs being left in this car. >> Oh, no. We don't know about that cuz he liter he literally just got here. >> They just got here. I mean, he Do you not see the side of the door? How much that dog has been panting and sweating right there? >> I'm saying he he he just got here like as in he came here. He's not even He's not >> So, you can't give me an answer of how long those dogs are sitting in that hot car. >> Sir, there go ahead. >> He is not even from >> I don't care where you're not from. >> Okay, sir. Where we going next? >> Negative. I've got the owner of the vehicle out here. >> Central, go ahead and get animal control in route. So, this is the deal. Apparently, this has not been the first time. And obviously, you are not taking care of these dogs. I'm getting animal control out here to make an assessment if they are going to take these dogs because obviously if if you don't have any places to go, you can't leave these dogs in a hot ass car all day. That dog literally look at the side of the car where literally all that wet stuff is from him panting. >> You could get pushed with cruelty to animals. That's a hot ass car. And that dog's in a crate. It's >> not the case. I got food, water, everything back there. Trying to take care of these dogs. >> Where Where is the food and water sitting back there? >> I get that, but you can't have them in a car without it running. Okay. So, there's no actual water. You >> buy ice. Put the ice in the bowl. Fill it up. >> Where's the bowl at? Where's the bowl at? Please show me. Thank you. Cuz I'm trying to figure this all out cuz I'm getting agitated. Where were those sitting at? >> Okay. Again, even if you have that little bit of water in there, that is still extreme. That dog probably went through that water in a few minutes. The heat index is over 100° and they're out in the middle of this sun. So, do you have your driver's license with you? >> Okay. >> Well, actually, if you got to get in the house, I'll just get your So, it's Eric. Is that your first and last name? >> Who? >> Is it Eric? >> He date of birth. you're agitated and what you're saying, but obviously what I know it's a he's not or you know purposely he's obviously something is is not right. He love the dogs or whatever but and I understand you said it cuz you probably love animals just as much. >> Yeah, that why I love animals so much. Why they shouldn't be sitting in a hot ass car all afternoon, right? >> So see like again you see all that that's coming from him that dog over there sweating down the side of that car. So, and you can't even tell me how long they've been sitting in there. You said >> Here's the thing is when I came out here to take that report for the car getting broken into last week, the dogs were in the vehicle then, too. >> Yeah. And I was >> overnight. Yeah. Yeah. But he was Why are they in the vehicle right now? >> No, cuz he he brings them in the house. >> But why are they in the vehicle right now? >> Because non central. Name a date of birth already. And if animal control has any questions in reference to it, just tell them this gentleman has had multiple instances leaving dogs in a in a car without it being running in the middle of the sun. You hear us dog barking from my house? Yes. >> Are you sure that he was >> 100%? Because my I came down here to check them out. >> Oh, >> and I got the call at 4:30. So, it's been at least an hour. >> Well, all I know is that he he's been taking care of these dogs, bringing them in and out the house. I necessarily wouldn't keeping up with the time. >> You're the one that's making him put them in the car. >> No, let myself put them in the car. >> No, that's what I'm comprehending is you told him you can't keep him inside. >> No. Yeah, cuz he he's he's visiting. So, I don't I know that we're not allowed to have uh you know, I don't want to say that I have dogs in my house necessarily. >> Would you rather them risk dying in the car? >> No, that's not the case. >> I still It's his job to take care of them. >> You're sleeping in the car at 104°? >> Yes, ma'am. >> With the car with the car off? >> Yes. I have no >> Why would you not be inside? >> But obviously when I came out here to this car, there was no one in this car. What apartment did y'all come out of? >> 111. So I when I came up to 111, who was the lady that came up and said, "Does anybody drive a silver Ford Explorer?" >> My girlfriend's friend. She doesn't even live. She doesn't even live here. >> What? >> That's not true. Cuz when her car got broken into, he told me she did live here. >> No, I said that's my girlfriend's friend. >> That's not what you just said. >> Tempor. >> He said girlfriend's friend. He did say that. >> That answer the door. >> Cuz I I'm sleep. >> No, no, no, no. Cuz I'm sleeping. I I woke up cuz somebody was knocked so hard at the door and my girlfriend's friend is like who is that? So she answers the door and she doesn't she doesn't know like this is my friend. He does she doesn't know that he's here visiting. So she tells we don't have no 40s or there's no 40. >> Okay. I guess my I guess the only thing I'm going to ask here is that I did ask her. So she has no idea about these dogs. Girlfriend's friend has no idea about these dogs. >> She doesn't even know my friend's name. She couldn't tell you his name right now cuz she doesn't know him. >> Okay. He's liter he's literally just visiting. >> Well, been visiting. >> He's been here for like like maybe three 3 days. >> That's not not true cuz it's been at least 5 days since the car got broken. >> That was >> That was a week ago. It was June 28th. >> No, no, ma. >> Yes, it was. I have it on police report. And I also have people sending me pictures of this vehicle saying that it's been out here for at least 3 weeks. And per your per your lease, if you have somebody here longer than 14 days, you have to let the office know. >> I just What do we do? I, like I said, I'm trying I'm suffering. >> Well, animal control is on the way to speak with you about the dogs. Maybe they take them, maybe they don't. Maybe you go to jail. I don't know. >> How do I go to jail? I'm not >> uh animal cruelty. Like I just said before, >> purposely leaving these dogs. >> What do you mean you're not purposely leaving them? >> Are you accidentally leaving them in the car? >> Sir, I am. I have. >> So, sir, if you're Look, listen to me, sir. If you're not involved in this at all, I would I said we This is concerning him. If you could just step inside the apartment, if it this is about him, okay? I appreciate you caring about your friend, but we've got someies going on and you're not involved in this in any way other than him being whatever's going on with this apartment complex. That that's civil, none of my business. But >> until we get done with this, if you could just step inside for me, okay, thank you. >> Yeah, just wait on animal control. >> Okay, bro. >> Just wait on animal control. >> Oh, man. And you said >> that you're good. >> That's actually I don't need any other questions from you. Just seeing the car alone gives me enough evidence to know the animal control needs to come out here. Look, that dog ain't even getting up. He's hanging out in the shade because how hot it is. And I I know you showed me the the food bowl and the water, but that little bowl, even if it's the car's on or off, that water is not enough. >> I know what you said. I'm not trying to do these dogs any type of >> Well, and I'm not trying to be rude and disrespectful with this, but if you're having a tough time, why put these dogs through that suffering, too, when it's not their choice? Sir, I didn't want to have to do that. Sir, I I have to go in, take a shower sometimes, come back out, check on, give him water, cuz if I mess up his apartment, then what? I'm trying to just do what I got to do so I can go back home. So, >> where do you live? Do you live in Tennessee? >> Yes, sir. I was in a tough spot out there. >> Okay. So, how did you get all the way from here from Tennessee? >> This car. >> I meant like why did you come down here? >> Cuz I'm trying to get this job. So, I was in in talking to the job and I don't know if I like I doing orientation, but it's like I don't know if I'm going to be able to keep the job or not cuz cuz it is, sir. I didn't want to leave my dogs in the car. I love my dogs and I don't want to go to jail for something that that's wrong when I know I'm not cruel leaving my dogs. I'm trying to feed and take care of them, sir. >> Again, >> I would I don't want to do that. Yes, I know. >> Yeah. It's It's over 100° with the heat index and they're sitting in the back of a car with all black like interior. >> Yes, sir. and I was going to come back outside. I had to take care of some things in there. >> Again, just like the courtesy officer said, this has been they've been out here barking for over an hour. The the thing is you're saying you just had to take care of a couple quick things, but you can't tell me how long you've been gone. That is concerning. Now, if it was a couple of minutes, but even so, that's still not acceptable. But at least you would give me a time frame. You don't even know. So, it could have been 3 hours, right? >> So, what what do you expect me to think? >> I understand that. That's why I know that you're upset. So, I just don't thing I don't want to do is go to jail for something that I is wrong. Number one, and I love these dogs. Like, if they got to take them, I understand cuz what's going on, but I want to figure out how to go back and get them. How >> I don't know if you'll be able to get them to be quite honest with you. >> But look, animal control deals with all that stuff. I don't take animals. They're going to assess the situation and they're going to go from there. >> I'm not saying you don't care about the dogs. It's obviously some common sense was not used here. Okay, I get you're struggling, but these dogs don't have a choice in it, right? >> Yes, sir. >> And if you love them so much, you at least give them to a home where they don't have to sit out in a hot car. >> And so, I was looking for all that. I can show you where I was looking for places for them to stay and everything. But if they have to go to animal control, I understand. >> Here, let's go ahead and get them the water bowl out and give them some water. >> Get over here. What's the problem? >> The two dogs left in a hot car. The sweating half to death. You could see You could see all the sweat from big dog right here. And this one's in a crate. >> And he was hanging out the window. >> Yes. But again, all black interior in the sun, heat index over 100. >> No, I'm just saying. >> No, the the car is the car is off. That dog is panting so hard that the whole side of the car is filled with his saliva where he's sweating. So he was out the car. >> No, his head was his head can't even fit through all the way in there because I came up to the car. He never stuck his head all the way out the window again. And I don't even want to talk about the all the this dark colored dog in a crate where the food and water wasn't even at. >> Can you figure out a place for us to take them? So >> well, I've got animal control route to talk to you about. >> There's no shelter. You take >> 104. She's taking the 1021 right now with 34. She's tempor. >> I'm just trying to call off to see what's going to go. >> Hey, I'm on the phone with us right now. >> Is there the other officer I just talked to? >> Yeah. No, she's right here. She's the one that called cuz y'all had multiple complaints about dogs sitting in this hot car. >> Well, nobody told us about any complaints. One, and two, we don't have nowhere to go. If y'all for us to go, >> not for >> if y'all go get us a place for us to go. >> That's not how this works. >> I know what you're saying, but they going to keep saying the same thing. Are you the girlfriend of him? >> Yep. >> Okay. How long have you been staying here? >> Um, we haven't been staying here. We've been living in our car. How long have you been in this parking lot? >> Um, hello. >> I don't know. When did you call? >> Hello. >> Because it's >> Hold on one second. Because you guys being in this parking lot living in your car is illegal. >> Oh, I didn't know that. Nobody. >> Yeah. >> It's called trespassing. You're not tenants here. You don't pay to live here. It's trespassing. That's look at the end of the day if you don't pay to live here, you're lording and you're trespassing. >> That's why we stay with him. >> But again though, she just explained the whole thing. Remember how she just explained to you about if someone stays somewhere in an apartment for more than 14 days here for more than 14 days? >> Yeah, it's it's I started my >> I can't think right now, sir. I'm really I lose my dogs. >> Okay. >> And I don't want to go to jail for something that that I didn't purp try to do. I didn't know was trespassing >> purposely. You mean you leaving the dogs in the car? That was a complete accident. >> Sir, I have to go in get dressed. I had other stuff I got to do and I did that. People see us pictures out here with us out here sweating our shirt off so the dogs can't have the air. Sir, we we stay out here, leave the door open. So the dogs the first two nights I slept out here. She She know I was out here cuz the people they almost robbed the car. So I'm like, "Okay, let me I don't want to leave the windows down that much, but I have to leave them down because >> I don't want the dogs to be too hot. >> They were too hot. They're sweating like crazy in there." >> Sir, today was just a misunderstanding. I was >> It's not a mis It's not a misunderstanding cuz this is the problem. You cannot tell me an exact time of how long you were gone with these dogs in the car while I was turned off. That is the problem. >> I'm so shooken up. So I I literally can't think right now. I don't want to lose these dogs and then I don't want to go to jail. Like I said, for some of this not person, I'm not I'm not a bad guy. >> I'm not saying you're a bad guy. You're just making a poor decision. >> Yes, sir. And that's the thing. I didn't >> That's what I'm saying, sir. >> You're leaving two dogs in a hot car in the middle of the summertime. >> Yes, I'm agitated because >> Yeah. No. Yes, you can control it by by getting these dogs out of the heat. My opinions don't matter, but the fact of it when I show up and I see a dog in a crate and and him look at the whole Have you seen the side of this car? >> The side of that car. It came from me spilling something out of the car, not him from sweating. >> No, I saw So, I've got it actually on camera. I've got him panting, sweating. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> It's not cool. It's a problem. >> So, I don't need you to be a smart mouth to me because I come up to the and they're in it's all black interior in there on top of that. That's why I imaginate cuz you know we have dogs that die in cars in very similar situations like this. Other gentleman saying I don't care about dogs. I love dogs. That's exactly why I have such a problem with this. >> Can they stay with you until we come back and get them to you? >> So I'm letting animal control make this decision. >> So animal control is coming to get the dogs >> and is that a kill animal control? What's going to happen with that? >> How do we do we are we have >> they're not going to them cuz I mean you basically almost today but I don't know why you're concerned about if they're going to kill them >> cuz we we love these dogs man. >> Then you wouldn't leave them in a hot car. I need your ID. >> Um, my ID is in the house. >> Well, then I need you to come over and talk to me. >> Oh, I think my ID >> I need you to come right here and speak to me. >> And sir, could you please get them some more water? Yes, sir. >> Thank you. >> Go ahead and bring probably about four bottles of water. These are big dogs. >> 10. We're no need. >> It's okay. >> Well, let's do this. Bring the bowl over here so they're not sitting on the pavement. Let's Let's put it like right here so they can come right here. not sit on the pavement. >> I'm gonna be honest with you, sir. I would just go ahead and keep filling them up because the other one the other dog just finished that whole bowl. So sir, you see where I'm getting at? They just demolished all that water in a matter of 2 minutes. >> I'm okay with going primary for this. >> Um I I'm comfortable going 95 both of them. U because they both voluntarily she's admitting that she's also been putting the dogs in the car today and that she came out here the two of them put the dogs in there together today and then he he went somewhere and then she went back inside. He didn't he didn't drive in this car. He drove in another car or he left him in this car. >> She claims that he went to work >> in this car. >> Yeah. Well, no. In some something else. She didn't say it. She just said I said, "Why were the dogs in the car?" She said, "We were in the car with them." And I said, "You weren't? Nobody was in the car with >> No. When I got out, there was no one in there." >> I was inside the house and he he had to go to work. >> Well, at the end of the day, I said that I'll be honest with you. >> That [ __ ] pisses me off. >> Yeah, I know. I I agree. >> I asked her. I said, "Why were you sitting inside?" She was like, "Because I said, why were you not in the car with these hot dogs?" >> Yeah, I heard you over there. I'm fully I'm fully aware. And I said it's just I can iron a dog were panting. >> Oh, no. They Yeah. sweating. >> The the people that called said they were out here literally like one frame. >> So, I'm going to look up the code section, but okay. Let's go. >> All right. >> What's going to happen? >> So, again, we've got animal control in route to come talk about potentially getting these dogs, which it's a reality. I think animal control's already told us that they're going to be getting these dogs. go that far. But after that, like, >> so we're still figuring out our investigation and stuff like that, but based on what y'all are telling us that these dogs have been left in there for a little while >> and you can't tell me that's pouring from what? Something you poured. >> Okay. >> I have a question. If we were here suffering with these dogs, >> we still would be in the wrong, right? Yes, they would >> because they still outside, right? >> So, why are we doing hypotheticals? The fact is you left two dogs in a hot car with no AC in the middle of the sun when it's over a 100°ree heat index. [ __ ] back to the car. >> I would I would I would please tell me to stop justifying what you're doing. >> No, we we not trying to do that, sir. We're just trying to tell let you know >> like we're not This is a nothing purpose like nothing >> nothing on purpose. You purposely left them in the car. So, yes, you did. This is not an accident. >> What time animal control I be here? >> It'll be probably another 25 to 30 minutes. >> You don't have 25 to 30 minutes. You have to get ready. >> Well, no. I mean, it's okay. We're not talking about work right now. I'm talking about these two dogs that were left in a hot car all day. >> You don't care that we got to make a living for ourselves to get our dog. >> So, right now I have a call for service about >> Go ahead. >> Animal control showed up and confirmed that they would be taking the dogs. >> Okay. So, this is what I need y'all to do so I don't want anybody getting hurt with your dogs biting anyone. So, animal control is here to take the dogs. Okay. If you will, I need you to bring the dogs around the corner to the animal control truck because I don't want your dogs Yeah. So, you're going to come this way and then take a left around the building right here. The trucks right here. You could say bye to the dogs and everything. We just don't want your dogs getting hurt, trying to bite us, right? Or anybody else, okay? They're going to take them to a shelter. They're not just going to get >> right here. Just come this way. I just want you to walk in front of us so none of them bite us. Okay. >> They said they were brown or anything. Are they going to be funny with me? >> They don't bite at us. >> Let me this one and then I'll work on the business. >> Okay. >> And it's like y'all going to be doing a wellness test on him and everything. >> Yeah. We're going to take a look at Okay. We going to get them back. >> Y'all mind loading, but they want to know. >> Come on. Get up there. The fact is we have nowhere to go and nobody's trying to help us find nowhere to go but our friends and the fact that you're all trying to help find those a program or home. >> Okay, it's not our obligation to find your program but listen we help you find those stuff if you ask us to but you have not asked us to but you're automatically blaming us for your mistake. >> We we understand it was a mistake. We understand that. >> But don't don't say that we're sitting here not even trying to help you guys find a program because we don't I don't know anything about you. >> Okay. >> Why would I know that you need a program? >> Mhm. >> I this today's the first time I've met you. >> Mhm. >> Okay. When I spoke to him last week, he said he's here visiting his brother. >> They are telling us that you guys are out here your own free will that they didn't ever tell y'all y'all how to sleep in the vehicles. That they are telling us that they very much invited y'all inside and y'all are choosing to stay out here. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. >> Okay. But that's what he's telling us. >> Okay. >> I think he's saying that to cover his ass of getting a lease violation because you guys are trespassing at this point, sleeping in your vehicles. Cuz I asked him last week, "Are you staying here?" And he said, "I'm visiting a friend." That's that's not what y'all are doing. Y'all aren't visiting. Y'all are here trying to pick up your feet. >> Mhm. >> Yes, we are. >> And that's a different thing than just visiting, >> right? >> I'm the courtesy officer for this location. I'm responsible for what happens on this property. I need to know who's staying on this property. >> So that way management when they have questions, I can answer those questions. So, can we um get some help to find us somewhere to stay? >> That's going to be y'all have to take those next steps. Okay. But first, I need you to turn around and place her there and find your back. >> You too as well. Just drop this for now. It's all right. Just put your hands on your back for me. I got you. Yeah. You guys got >> We What? >> It's the middle of 15. That's what I told you. >> Can you please let her go? It's not her fault. >> She admitted that she knew the vehicle. >> What are we going for? >> Cruelty to animals. We did. All right. Walk in here with me. >> All right. Look. >> I love you. >> Here. Come to this car right here. Okay. Sir, is there anything in your pockets? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. What do you Do you got any weapons in there? Is it just a phone and stuff? >> No, sir. I don't know what's in there. >> You don't know what's in your pockets? >> Not any weapons in there, sir. >> Okie do. >> We'll lock your car. >> Baby, I love you. Okay. >> ID number for the case. >> Hey. >> Yeah, we'll get it for you. I I'll get it. >> I don't know your number by >> here. Go ahead and have a seat, bud. I we'll get the numbers and stuff when y'all get to the jail. They'll let you get numbers out of your phone. All right. So, go and have a seat for me. Nothing in your waistband or nothing. Right. Good. All right then. >> Okay. So, like I explained to your girlfriend or whoever she is, you guys are going to be barred from the property, okay? For 2 years. You can come back to get the vehicle once you're finished with this process. But after that, you guys cannot come back. Okay. >> All right. You need anything else from us? >> No, you guys are good. Um, just so you guys know, I mean, the dogs will get just the first like first aid type stuff and they'll get a reported and if you guys need that for your case, just reach out. >> Okay. >> I don't think you're a bad person, man. But the problem is your actions today had consequences and it's 92° right now, man. And if I turned off the heat and they seen this car, you and I would not last long. You know what I'm saying? There was a time when I had a dog um before I was in the situation I'm in now and able to, you know, handle having a dog and I had to give my dog up because I couldn't take care of it. Um, I had just gotten out of college, didn't have a job, didn't have a place to stay. It's not easy. It's not, but it was the best thing for that dog, and that's something you have to consider. Both suspects were booked for two counts of animal cruelty and were barred from the property for 2
Danger Zone
