that's the sound of one minnesota state
trooper as cars crane towards him and a
family today is january 22nd 2022
overnight several troopers ended up
running from sliding vehicles and there
were two separate instances of pileups
all of this caught on camera total 216
crashes 152 vehicles off-road and two
jackknife semis our first incident
started with a car sliding into a camera
pool about 30 feet off the roadway watch
from multiple camera angles to see just
how close these cars were to hitting the
state trooper a few feet made a lot of
difference what you're about to see all
occurred with less than an inch of snow
per the national weather service work

six months or whether that eastbound 94
at st peter or just east of john ireland
ultimately multiple vehicles involved in
this instant downtown
and the family ran to the cover of the
trooper's car which was protected by a
fire engine behind it next two pile-ups
both caught on camera last night the
first of which in saint paul started
with a three-vehicle collision with
another accident further ahead at the
top of your screen fourth vehicle
sliding into the scene in the left lane
and a fifth vehicle followed which used
the median cable guard rails to reduce
some of its forward momentum before
crashing into the scene
pileup number two started with one car
trying to take an
exit sliding all the way down the ramp
into the middle lane of freeway traffic
most cars were able to avoid
the blocking vehicle but one
two
and
three cars hit the median wall while
trying to avoid the blocker ultimately
one vehicle attempted avoidance a little
too late resulting in a glancing
collision and even and even some sparks
then
at the right side of your screen a two
vehicle crash partially off camera
unfortunately even with police on scene
one vehicle going way too fast careened
through the traffic scene contacting two
other stopped cars on the shoulder
flashing lights and warnings were
ignored by a small minority of motorists
to their own peril even with flares
ahead from a prior crash this vehicle
slid into the wall and then blocked a
lane which turned out to be important
later one car slides at the last moment
narrowly avoiding a collision while a
police car on the right side of the
screen responds lights and sirens to a
separate crash police were extremely
busy all night and crashes with injuries
take priority over other property damage
crashes but in this stretch of the road
not just one more crash into that left
median wall
but two more police eventually came out
cleaned up the existing crashes one car
was moved well onto the right shoulder
with flares but that even that didn't
stop this
this next crash from happening at this
point it might be worth mentioning that
this all occurred on a friday night draw
your own conclusions here's a crash at
lowry tunnel in the last 12 months we've
captured more than 100 crashes on camera
at this location likely one of the most
dangerous freeway tunnels in the united
states it features a relatively sharp
turn for a freeway high traffic volume a
somewhat blind sloping curve and unique
surface conditions due to the presence
of the tunnel
and outside the tunnel we received this
video of another multi-car crash with a
large presence of first responders you
can see what they were dealing with
overnight lots and lots and lots of
these incidents involved a car at some
point blocking a lane of traffic at
night on a freeway some individuals got
out and waved to warn traffic of the
hazards ahead in this first example note
the semi slowing for cars behind the
only out now is the shoulder on which
the pedestrian is standing and take note
of where the individual is standing in
the second example a moment later a car
will slide near the spot they previously
occupied even partially blocking a lane
of traffic carries its own risks
especially on a freeway at night like a
game of billiards contact on the right
is going to spin the car left resulting
in it now blocking two lanes of traffic
can you imagine if the visibility was
worse even in good visibility there are
several cars traveling much too fast and
the pedestrians in the top right are
wisely going to run off the freeway and
hide behind the guardrail and we'll end
with a bad example and a good example
here's a truck behaving poorly and video
enhancement of the license plate
actually indicated the driver was
obviously from chicago
then some minnesotans who stopped
collaborated and listened to all get
their cars diligently off to the side of
the road
