this officer is responding to a shoplifting complaint from Kroger after a man stole a bag of crab legs and left the store but what he doesn't know is that this call is about to take a dangerous turn sir right step over in front of my car what I I give D $5 for E I give him $5 for you gave him $5 for the whole thing of crab leg yes sir you home you have a set it on the hood all right don't go nowhere come here come here don't run into traffic five five I got one running come here come on come on man all right lean over I'm going I'm give me on I'm going to get you T okay Le over the car NOP get over the car 5 five he pulled a knif on me he's running down for you a nearby CCTV camera also recorded the suspect's attack on the officer take a look the CCTV footage captures the officer chasing the suspect through the parking lot when the officer catches up he pins the suspect against the car Bonnet holding him in place for a brief moment the officer maintains his grip but then the suspect suddenly pulls out a knife and swings it at him fortunately the officer reacts quickly stepping back just in time to avoid the blade as the knife misses its Mark the suspect takes off running stop right there stop right there get down on the ground stay down stay down you reach for that knife I'll you get down on the ground let me get up no get down I got a bad I don't care get down stop I got a bad heart I got a bead heart I got a bear heart wait a minut please sir I got a bead heart sir I got a bead heart get his other handee I got a be get down a going get down I get here I got a be stole some crab legs they said they're on the hood of my car oh I caught up with him Crossing Victory here stopped him at sooco in the parking lot he put the crab legs on the hood and ran around my car came up through this parking lot right here I grabbed his backpack pushed him against the hood I was trying to get his arms and uh he grabbed that box cutter there out of his back pocket swiped it at me I backed up he started running this way hit the mirror on that blue forward right there went to jump the fence and the gate opened cuz it was unlocked here's a rag for you oh I appreciate that's all right apprciate bit of our land on you how you doing sir I appreciate it sir thank you um when he pushed the gate he fell flat cuz the gate just opened when he went to climb it and that's when uh I got on his back I had my gun held up on him told him not to reach for anything Lambert got there I was able to grab the box cutter out of his back pocket get it away from him and then Lambert got him in cuffs and that's when uh Dillard showed up here you go sir thank you very much I'm glad you're safe man and everybody in part of the job so part of the job yes my goodness you scared the sh we heard all the screaming dog dog went crazy yeah um are y'all sure y'all don't want a report for the car y'all don't have to do anything with it but y'all can at least have it documented girl it's it's $1,000 deductible so it's not like we're going to fix it it's not like we're GNA put a claim so yeah that don't don't do you got plenty of paperwork to do I'm sure Ah that's my watch that's your watch I saw him turn around and uh take a slide pure with it thankfully it I didn't notice till after but it was closed so tried to hop the fence the fence was open when we pushed it hit no man come man need you to sit up what happened um you were at the Kroger today right yes sir all right what happened after you left the Crower I start walking down the street and what what what happened that dude told me about c i told us I ain't got no F off Chain man he going give me f i g i start walking down the street white d came out the store say man let me have about like that day I know I just gave and I just kept walking know police behind me right then white officer pull up behind me Poli his truer and U I was going over to the store by the St then U he said get against what I there he said you got that bag I said I I just G5 C like that did then I try to give him back to him try to give back to who I try to give him to the off uhhuh you know he pushed me yeah I just broke outside running then he caught me grab me B Tri back me get the car they trying to push my arm behind my back you know push my arm behind my back he great mom I tell he great mom right I told M man got a bad heart too you know he TR me around like like pushed me over the car like that right so he kept trying to you know my arm I would let him get my arm back there like that did then know he said something right so a box Cut was in my back pocket m box Cut was in my back pocket and by him pushing me on the car and [ __ ] CH me in my damn back so I pull out and dropped it on the ground that then and then he talk about oh you pulling weap I I ain't pulling out no weapon you I come on I ain't crazy I said this ain't my first time being no sir you know like that is then he then I start to break out and run again right then when more P up and I ran into the people backyard and thr me on the ground like that that's it then he went telling the black CER and the white c lber l whatever them and the S came up there man what going pull a weapon on the police and the police got a gun man come I'm not going to do that man that's stupid that acting be cute you pull out knif on myor right here which one right here okay so I said down he I don't know if you know told me they took in the court one day he had 15 charges he bad for every single C no he just walked he walked and you saw that he and um and then when you approach him he he like reach his back Park and P up I was like sir I was like calling him and he was like like he was he ignoring you yeah and I said dude not let me chase you down then he goes like this he's like chase me down there oh okay got you I had already stopped I wasn't going to chase him down no it's not I we got the we got him and he pulled out KNE on my coworker as well so he's going um I just had to make sure I got I'm G give y'all give you a copy it was a reg it's one of our regular thieves we noticed them coming in we were watching for him to leave then when he did leave the guard he'd walked behind the guards the guard couldn't see him and I saw him and I glanced down and he had the bag a a bag with crab legs to okay and we went out the door after him and he just like he couldn't hear us we were telling him I said dude don't make me Chase your ass down and he just reached into his back pocket I had already stopped I wasn't going to go after him and he gone into his back pocket and pulled out a knif had it in his hand a records check revealed that he had prior shop liting convictions on October 17th 2016 November 3rd 2017 and March 6th 2019 he had also been banned from the Kroger at a different location hey everyone it's Trent prior deputy sheriff Patrol sergeant and K9 Handler and I've definitely been to these types of calls before I've had to chase shoplifting suspects I've had suspects pull out weapons on me at various calls for service including shoplifting generally speaking shoplifting calls are fairly basic however you never know what you're going to run into even on their surface they might seem super simple some of these calls have the potential to go completely sideways and that's why as a law enforcement officer you need to be mentally prepared at every single call for the worst case scenario because you just never know the officer was dispatched to what he probably presumed was a routine shoplifting call at a local Kroger and he quickly realized that that was not going to be the case when he arrived the officer quickly made contact with a suspect who was standing outside of the store now this suspect had four or more prior convictions for shoplifting and in the state of Georgia and a lot of other states once you hit a certain number of shoplifting convictions each additional convictions is an automatic felony which was going to be the case for this suspect so this suspect was not free to leave he was legally detained this officer was trying to do his investigation obviously the suspect didn't care and ran into heavy traffic endangering the lives of a lot of innocent people when that officer finally got a hold of him that and was trying to place him under arrest in illegal fashion that suspect pulled out a knife and obviously tried to clearly stab that officer in the upper chest neck and head region which definitely had the potential to end that cop's life had he not moved out of the way and in this case that cop based on what I saw was completely justified in using deadly force had he chosen to do so which he obviously didn't now use of force is dictated by Department policy penal code and state law and applicable case law which is based on Supreme Court ruling and for use of force we're going to be using Graham versus Connor which is a 1989 Supreme Court case ruling also known as The Objective reasonableness test so what would a reasonable officer placed in that exact set of circumstances do would he use deadly force on someone who was trying to him with a knife probably he could have this cop chose not to but I'm just saying he in my opinion was probably justified in doing so just from looking at what I saw however he chased the suspect onto the side of a house and he placed him under arrest without any further incident and no injury which is always a win I did see some officer safety things I'm not going to Monday Morning Quarterback this thing too much because I used to hate that myself and I wasn't there you have some tunnel vision going adrenaline's really high there's a lot of things going on however I will just say that I'm glad that when that officer was holding his gun when he went to grab the suspect at the tail end of this thing that a that gun didn't accidentally discharge B the gun didn't drop on the ground and the suspect grab it or C most importantly last minute the suspect didn't turn around and stab that cop who was standing right over him and also the suspect continuously stating he has heart issues I ran into that a lot when I was placing somebody under arrest and a lot of the times they would use it as an excuse a medical excuse thinking it was going to prevent them from getting booked into jail 99% of the time it was completely false and made up however on the very slight chance that they are going to be having some sort of medical issue even though nothing crazy occurred during this incident or whatever incident it's going to be you still have to do your due diligence as an officer take them to the ER get them cleared by a doctor and then take them and get them booked into County jail and that's going to be it I'll see you guys in the next one dude his prior convictions he was charged with felony shoplifting additional charges included aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer Criminal Trespass and felony obstruction [Music]
