Do you understand? >> Yes. >> If you cannot afford a lawyer and you want one, one will be provided for you before questioning without charge. >> Does this mean you are you taking me to jail? >> No, that just means you're detained right now. Because you're in handcuffs, I have to read these questions to you. >> Okay. Okay, I understand. >> Has anyone threatened you or promised you anything to get you to talk to me? >> No. >> Okay. Um So, the reason What's that? You've never been in trouble before? >> No. No, I've got a ticket for speeding and >> That's it? >> and a running a stop sign. Yes. >> You never never even got like a court date never like that? >> No, I went to court for a driving without license. >> So, who who's idea >> never had my license. >> Whose idea was it for you guys to come out here and do this? >> Um just getting stuff to get back to school. >> Yeah. >> Just to get my niece an outfit. >> Try to get your sister an outfit? >> My niece. >> Your niece. Uh is one of them your niece or she's not here? >> She's not here. Yes, one of them is my niece, but that's not who >> Not who you were going to get it for? >> Officers already had surveillance footage tying the suspects to the theft, though something else about the first suspect immediately catches their attention. >> Were you all trying to get it for your niece or just separate? >> I don't know what I was by myself. >> Uh >> Like we were together, but I was by myself. >> Got you. Well, you're you're all on video and everything. Take Is this stuff you already got? >> No, I leave tags on all my stuff. >> You just leave tags on? >> Yes, because I like my closet to look neat. >> I got you. Um Yeah, you guys were were on video. We had witnesses saying that you guys were stealing from a bunch of a bunch of different stores. Uh and obviously you've got a bunch of bags here, no receipts. Is Is anything here paid for? >> Yes. >> What What is paid for? >> What's paid for is um H&M is paid for. >> H&M? Do you guys have the receipt? >> No, I was doing an exchange. >> You were doing an exchange? >> Yes, my stuff is on my um cuz I paid with a card. >> Okay. Um so, you have H&M stuff that you were going to exchange? >> Yes. >> Did you Did you end up exchanging it? >> No, I only exchanged two shirts. >> Two shirts for >> Yeah, and they didn't have anything else for my size. Well, that's what I did. >> get What did you get for those two shirts? Did they give you like store credit or >> No, they let me switch it out for the right size. >> it out for the right size. Okay. Did you have some kind of receipt >> and a email for that. The only thing I took is a pair of skirt. >> From H&M? >> No. >> From where? >> Um I don't know this store. That's all >> Okay, that's all right. We'll We'll end up finding it. What about at uh New Balance? >> Nothing. >> You didn't take anything from New Balance? >> No. >> So, just cuz you weren't the one who took it out of the store doesn't mean you were involved in the whole situation. >> take nothing from New Balance. >> So, you handed the other girl in the green a uh a pair of shoes or it was a um shorts or something or maybe leggings. I know but you you handed it to her and she walked out with it without paying. >> I don't know what she did. I didn't get nothing out of New Balance. I didn't touch it. >> So, the only thing The only thing that you took was a skirt, you said? >> Yes. >> Okay. You don't remember what store it was from? >> I I think it's Rue 21. I'm not sure or Charlotte Russe. >> Russe. Okay. Okay. >> The officer now presses the suspect on whether there was ever any intention to pay before leaving the store. >> Do you guys Do you have a wallet? Were you intending to pay for anything? >> Yes. >> You were? >> Yes. >> But how come you didn't pay for it? >> didn't pay for the skirt. Everything else that I was doing was a return. >> Everything else you were just returning, so But what about all the stuff in your bags here? >> one bag of hers. >> Her bag was >> Was it this Oh, no. It's It's the bag there in the front. Okay. All right. So, if I look in that bag, it's just going to be a skirt? >> Yes, and H&M. >> And then H&M stuff? >> Yeah. >> All right. >> Literally, it's just a skirt. >> Okay. Um is there anything in the car? >> No. >> There's nothing in your car? Or is it your car? >> No, it's not my car. >> Okay. Which one's Whose car does it belong to? >> My sister's. >> Which one is that? >> The one in the middle. >> Okay. And you were going to say something? >> Yeah, and I'm not um driving. I'm meeting someone at the um McDonald's. >> You're meeting someone at McDonald's? >> Yeah. >> Okay. But you were in the car with them. >> But we're leaving yes, I'm leaving separate. >> You were just leaving separate? Okay. >> to go to work. >> Okay. Um Never been in trouble before? >> Never been in trouble before. >> Have you Have you ever stolen before and gotten away with it? This is your first time trying to do this then? >> No. >> Okay. Cuz I don't recognize you. Normally we have the repeat offenders who are always stealing always doing >> been to jail. I've never been to jail. >> Okay. >> I've never been in the back of a police car. >> What about your sister? Has she ever been in trouble before? >> A long time ago. >> A while ago. Okay. All right, I'm going to sit you back down and then uh and then just talk to you guys one at a time and then hopefully your stories come straight and true and we can prove it all with video. Um but it might take another 30 minutes to an hour. Come come back and sit over here. Just have a seat. What do you >> I'll go here. >> What's Oh yeah. >> Here's what we talked about. >> All right. >> It's now the second suspect's turn to answer questions [music] as officers begin by advising her of her rights. >> But I was explaining to her because you you guys are in here come stand right here for a Because you guys are in um handcuffs, I can't even really talk to you. They can't talk to you until we read you your rights. All right. So I'm going to read you your rights real quick. Uh and then just let me know if you understand. You can say yes or no. All right, you have the right to remain silent. Do you understand? That's a yes? >> Yes. >> Anything you say may be used against you in court. Do you understand? >> Yes. >> You have the right to talk to a lawyer before and during questioning. Do you understand? >> Yes. >> If you cannot afford a lawyer and you want one, one will be provided for you before questioning without charge. Do you understand? >> Yes. >> And has anyone threatened you or promised you anything to get you to talk to me? No? Okay. Um So, I know the bags on the outside here, the purse and the one brown bag, were uh the female that I just spoke to. I think that's your sister. And then this one's yours or the middle one's yours? This one is? Okay. So, whose idea was it to come out here and do this stuff? I don't think it was I don't think it was your sister's cuz she's never been in trouble. She's I've never seen her before doing this kind of thing. I don't think I've seen you either. Um Was it your idea? Was it whose idea? >> It wasn't really an idea. >> It just kind of happened. Like you guys got together and decided to come take stuff without paying? >> No, not like that. Like we came to the mall just to see what It wasn't really planned. >> Okay. Do you guys have money at all? Like were you planning on paying for anything? >> Yeah. >> You were? Then how come you walked out without paying for anything? >> Just to see what we could get. >> Yeah. How old are you? >> 34. >> You're 34? Okay. Um Do you have anything in your vehicle from like New Balance or any of these other stores? No? Um Is the New Balance stuff inside your bags? These bags here? >> The three suspects, including a juvenile, were allegedly seen shoplifting across nine different stores. [music] Though, despite witness statements and surveillance footage, the second suspect refuses to speak. >> So So, at New Balance, we have we have video and witnesses saying that you guys were stealing stuff. They saw you. These two were like handing you items and you were putting it in your bag. Is that stuff here or is that stuff in the car? I think I see some New Balance stuff in there. I haven't even searched through them yet. I will be searching through them, but um I just wanted to see if you guys are telling the truth or not and uh trying to make up my mind on what what we're going to end up doing. So, the New Balance stuff is in the car or in here or you're just not sure? Think it might be in that one. Okay. Um what other stores did you go to in here in this outlet mall? I know you came from New Balance. Did you go anywhere before New Balance? Tommy Hilfiger Tommy Hilfiger over there in that same plaza and then came over here or I and then went to New Balance and then came over here and then I know you went to Nike, H&M. What else have you gone to in here? Only Nike and H&M? Okay. So, when we look in these bags there's not going to be any other from like any other merchandise from like Adidas or Under Armour or any other place other than Nike, H&M, New Balance or Tommy? Okay. And what? Charlotte? What is that? Is that that's the name of the store? Oh, Charlotte. Okay. I don't think I've heard of that one. Okay. Have you ever been in trouble for for theft or stealing? A long time ago? How long? Like a year? 7 years? How come um How come you didn't like learn your lesson from 7 years ago? No? All right. >> With the second suspect refusing to speak, officers returned to the first suspect hoping she'll be more truthful this time around. >> I'm going to have you sit down and then I'm going to grab the other one. Can you just help me out? I don't There's a ton of stuff in there. I don't know what Is that all H&M? Everything in Everything in here is H&M? Okay. So, it was just a skirt? Well, what's all that? That's my stuff that I did That's H&M. I know, but uh so, where was this from? This is from I don't know if it's Rue It's one of those? There's no tag on it other than the security tag. Did the alarm Oh, here it is. Charlie Roos, got you. Did the alarm go off when you walk out? >> Um it was a lot of people going out. I don't know. >> Got you. Okay. So, this is Roos. This is all H&M. Okay. And you were bringing it in for a exchange? >> two shirts. >> Okay. All right. >> Everything is H&M. >> So, everything in there's H&M? >> Yes. >> Do you have a receipt, email, anything saying that you exchanged it? >> Yes, I have it on my phone. >> I have an email. >> Is it on your phone or is >> Yes, it's on my phone. >> You want to show me? If If you can show me that, then I'll go This will go right back with you. >> Yes, I can show you. >> Do you have your phone or is it in here? >> It's in my purse. >> At this point, a receipt would change everything, prompting the officer to check the suspect's phone for proof of payment. >> It's all the same ads. >> I don't know where it's at, but it has to be in my email cuz I didn't get a paper receipt and I used a card. >> Okay. Um >> If you guys are only H&M, you can do all that. I promise I'm telling you the truth. This just This is the skirt. >> Just that one. Okay, you can go back and have a seat. Can I talk to you one more time over here? Is this your bag? >> Yeah. >> Oh, that was just there? Oh, that was yours. Okay. Um So, I know you guys went into the H&M. There's a ton of H&M stuff. Uh was any of that paid for? You don't know? Okay. There's like security tags and no receipts or anything. Your sister was saying that she has receipts on emailed to her on her phone. She showed me her phone. We went through the emails. There's no receipts or anything. So, what we're about to do We You guys can sit here for hours while we go through footage of H&M or you can just tell us that none of that was paid for and we can skip forward some of the hours of watching the video footage. So was any of that stuff paid for from H&M? >> My glasses were. My hat was. >> The hat was? So this might be easier. What what all was paid for? One hat? Was there a couple hats? >> The hat that I was wearing. The hat that you seen on top. >> The little the tan the white colored one cream colored one? That one was paid for? That's the only thing that was paid for from H&M? What So what was like the What was your like thought process like if I pay for one thing they won't know or like why did you pay for for that and nothing else? >> I didn't really have a thought process. >> You didn't what? >> This is not something I thought out. So that's yeah. I don't have any answers like I don't even know. >> Like you didn't just want to walk out with that that hat too and not pay for any of it? Just decided to pay for one? >> No, I don't know. >> Okay. Um One final question is now directed at the second suspect and her response could end up adding even more trouble to their growing list of charges. All right. So it's just like it wasn't a whole planned thing. This isn't what this isn't your job. You don't do this. You don't Or were you trying to sell this stuff? >> No. >> No? Okay. It's just for you guys or for you whoever you're buying it for. You're not selling it. >> While both suspects claim the situation was not premeditated, officers later discovered tin foil inside their bags, a tool known to prevent store alarms from going off. >> So in your purse you have that aluminum foil stuff. Is that to block the the sensors from going off? >> That's what it's for. >> What? So you have a whole bunch of aluminum foil. What boosters like shoplifters do is have aluminum foil to block the sensors from alarming >> That's what it's the security sensors. You have a whole bunch of them all lined up in your in your purse that you have. What was the What was those for? For what? Okay. Um and none of the New Balance stuff is here. So, it's in the car. So, are we going to find anything else in the car? Cuz I'm able to search it just based off I know you guys got in your car with stolen stuff. So, I'm going to search your car for stolen stuff. Is there anything else in there? What? No? Okay. Got the aluminum foil. New Balances. This is the New Balance bag. >> At this point, police are convinced the suspects came prepared before entering the mall. The evidence is enough to lead officers to believe this wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision. >> Come back over here. >> All right, now now I know it's way more than what we initially thought. How long have you been doing this whole theft thing? You obviously know more than what I had thought at first. >> This is like weekly. >> Like weeks, months, years? You have a ton of stuff here. I know you just did it today, but like have you been doing this thing for a long time? >> Yeah. >> You've just been getting away with it? >> Yeah. >> What what made you decide to come out here and like tear up all these stores? I just found so much more stuff in your car. >> It's a good idea, I think. >> Okay. Come over here real quick. >> Once again, the officer turns back to question the first suspect. >> All right, I was just explaining your sister. Now I obviously know you guys are taking way more stuff than I initially thought. >> What? >> You you were in you were in the front passenger seat sitting with a whole bag of >> That's nothing to do with me. And that's I don't think that's the whole bag of stolen stuff. >> Okay, so did you pay for any of it? >> No, I brought stuff with me when we came so I can match them properly like not I told you what I took. >> Okay, come over here. Uh this stuff was sitting in your seat up there. I just want to know where what store it's from without having to Is it all American Eagle? >> I don't know. >> You have no idea? It was sitting >> my stuff. That's not >> It was sitting with you. There's aluminum foil on the >> I'm telling you, sir, it's not my stuff. I'll tell you what's mine. >> Okay, whose is it? >> I don't know whose these are. What size are they? >> Hey, you you Yeah, yeah, we got them in front of Nike right. You can go you can go back and sit down. >> Should we go? Want me to tell you what's mine and what's not? >> Uh-uh, yeah. Thanks, Travis. If you want to tell me the truth, but I don't think you're telling me the truth. >> I am telling you the truth. I told you what I >> Okay, what's yours? >> Um none of this stuff in this bag is mine. >> None of this stuff in this bag that was sitting on your seat is not yours? >> No. >> Okay. What seat were you sitting on in the car? >> I was sitting in the front seat. >> Okay. >> Passenger side. >> So you that was just there when you got in the car? >> Yes, sir. >> All right. What about um what you said you were going to tell me what else is yours. >> I have I brought Aerie panties. >> Aerie panties? >> Aerie panties. >> Aerie, oh, okay. >> That's what I brought and I need to find a shirt to go with but I brought that from home. Like that's what I had in the car. >> Okay. Um what about all this stuff? This is all in the car too. This is all Nike or I mean this is all Adidas. >> what I had, sir. Aerie >> But you were definitely in New Balance with them. >> And I didn't take nothing out of >> is all New Balance. >> I don't have nothing in there. I didn't take I told you what I took. That skirt out of >> Okay, go have a seat. Go have a seat. >> By the end of the investigation, officers alleged the group had taken around $2,000 worth of merchandise from stores across the mall. The two adult suspects now face multiple charges including retail theft, use of anti-shoplifting devices, possession of anti-shoplifting devices, and grand theft of property valued over $750. Meanwhile, the juvenile involved was later transported to the juvenile assessment center. Couple that steals together gets caught together. In this next case, officers with the Secaucus Police Department respond to Walmart after loss prevention reported a couple actively shoplifting inside the store. By the time the officers arrived, the suspects are still moving through the aisles. >> couple Orange juice orange juice hours and we compressed that from sealer electronics. I got a screen carrier, more clothes. >> Okay. >> Uh I think it's also makeup. They were about to head out with the electric and then decided to switch toys. >> They're by the toy section right now. >> They're going to do some extra right now. Uh this is from my phone. >> 45 You have one, just send me a 30 in case they rabbit out of here. 18 37 >> I think he just I don't know if he was recording himself or if he was on the phone with somebody, but he's bragging about the 40 about the merchandise. >> Just have the next unit meet me by LP. We're going to try to catch them before they walk out and then have the third unit staged by uh the grocery entrance exit because they're doing paving on this side, so they probably won't come out this side. >> 18 30 pulling up from the highway 37 and then I believe a 56 also got out. >> Received. So, Hispanic male, he's got like a headband on, ponytail, white t-shirt, black shorts. Hispanic female, navy blue shorts, gray hoodie, black hair, carrying a Louis Vuitton purse. >> So, he's not paying for the for the clothes for the uh clothes they took in. The female still in the store. The female still in the store. >> So, they're going 20 uh LP side. >> So, I'll just stay there for right now, in front of the door. >> Should I stay at that money LP door or the other one? >> Uh the the vestibule door, the exit. >> I'm going to wait cuz he's still in there. He's in the store. >> Police continue monitoring the suspects until they finally approach the exit, prompting officers to coordinate and move in. >> All right, he's passing McDonald's. It looks like they're probably going to exit onto grocery store property. I'll meet the other units over there. All right, they're exiting right now. Again, young Hispanic male white t-shirt, ponytail, and black and white headband. Grey hoodie, Adidas sweats, carrying a Louis Vuitton purse. The merchandise within the purse that the subject is wearing is also Louis Vuitton. 40. I think you're facing Bring him back to the car. I'll let you pick two. I'm with everybody. Meet Pine and Grove and South. Which way did he follow? Where? >> Before asking the suspects about the merchandise they allegedly tried to steal, the officers now request identification from the 21-year-old male and the 18-year-old female. With their identities confirmed, officers waste little time confronting the pair about the stolen merchandise. >> What's your address? How you doing? >> I'm fine. I'm fine. >> 18? >> I'm 19 years old. >> Police now turn to the surveillance cameras, reviewing the footage step-by-step to see exactly how the suspects allegedly hid the items. >> All right, this one on the >> So So over here As far as he saw like what quick here >> Upstairs? Is all there? >> And you did probably there. >> The shirt he has on too. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> I'm shorts. >> So over here is right here too to open it. Leave the box. >> Who did you take it out of the package? >> Here I have them all. >> Oh no, it was it was all there. >> The shorts that all the shirts >> Mhm? >> From the different box. So far. >> You need to go run out and get the receipt. >> Yeah. >> You need to go get the receipt right now. >> That's the speaker's store, right? >> Yeah. >> Doing I am busy but let me stop at my car and I'll apologize to myself. >> Has a picture and then you should sign it on the back on the back. >> The surveillance footage gives officers a much clearer picture of the situation and both suspects are soon formally trespassed from the store. >> Trespassed? >> You left it. Don't you? I left it. >> What is that? >> Nugget. >> Walmart. >> All right, just your name on the top goes your name and then your date >> Oh, no, no. >> No, no, just put your your name. >> Yeah. >> And then date of birth. >> English? >> No. >> No, no. >> Just name and uh last name. >> How long is the trespass for? >> So, in this company, if you trespass in this building, any Walmart or any Sam's Club. >> In this one? >> Do you want to be going to Walmart? >> Any Walmart that I can go to? Walmart video? >> Walmart or Sam's Club or nothing? >> Sam's Club either? >> Nope. >> Yeah, Sam's Club either. >> I just have a question. How come how come Sam's Club too? It's under Walmart. >> No, they are. >> They own it. >> They own it. >> And this is definitely as in forever? >> Yes. >> Pretty much. >> With the stolen merchandise totaling more than $200, the suspects are now headed to the station to face charges. >> Yeah, I'm just wondering though. >> All the stuff you took they scanned. >> And then are we allowed to know the amount? Cuz it was like >> It's 260 262. You could arrest her if you never was under $100. It's not up to them. It's up to us at the end of the day. So, do you need to come back to headquarters for fingerprinting? The bill would not be acceptable. >> Excuse me, yeah. >> I'll bring those shorts back to you later. You want to sign? >> No, I just wanted to know if >> Can I please have my phone? No, you're going to get searched. It's not going to go in there. Please have a seat. Yours? >> Can I please have my motorcycle keys? >> You're good. Got to get settled first. >> Have a seat now? >> I need you to sign something. >> After finishing their investigation at the scene, officers begin getting both suspects ready for the ride to the station. >> Wait, wait. No work to be So, basically 126 126. So, if it's over three and you go to county. >> We'll worry about that when we get there. We got some stuff to do before we go. >> But, do you if this is depend on the situation or does it depend on the history like you said? >> So, all history >> All history based. >> You know, you can leave that on my bag. >> Well, we got to we got to separate them anyway. >> Oh, okay. >> Stay right there. Got it. Stay right there. And we place that in the property room. Ready? Just upload that when you as soon as you can so I can look at it. And the shorts? >> And the bag too. >> All right, so I'll just add it to that. That's added to the property room stuff. >> The shorts? >> Question. So, if I do like a new motorcycle what would the process be after that? >> Uh I'm not I don't I know about it, but I'm not too familiar with it. You go to county? >> You go to county you see a judge the next morning. Usually how it goes in the >> What's that? >> We'll we'll go over there. >> It's not a side road. >> By the end of the investigation, both suspects were charged with shoplifting and conspiracy to commit shoplifting. This shoplifter came back for round two. It ended badly. This next incident takes place in Hoboken, New Jersey where officers responded to a call about a suspected repeat shoplifter returning to the same store. After dealing with repeated incidents, the store staff decided enough was enough. Here's what they had to say. >> What's up, man? >> Officer. >> Yep. >> Yeah, so he came yesterday on 6. And LP wasn't working I guess or he wasn't in the room. He took like 10 minutes. He loaded off like a bunch like 10 movies like >> All right. All right. >> And he walked out. And today he just came back. >> Okay. >> And he's doing the same thing right now. He's loading up everything. >> He's there? >> Yeah. Uh is it possible just to wait for him basically to come out? >> I don't want to spook him or anything. I don't know how you guys want to do it. >> Yeah. So you >> Yeah. >> He shoplifted yesterday. And he's here today. >> He came yesterday. >> And he came yesterday. Did you file a report? >> No, I just I called my staff my supervisor. >> Where? >> Just for guys here. >> I'm not going to wait. Just for a little bread. >> You want to grab him already? >> I don't know. I don't know. >> Did you say you want to grab him already? >> Yeah. >> Why? >> Usually we wait so he gets his right here and then just abandon them there. I'm not sure. No, cuz he's in there already, you know. He's he's I guess >> Let's say basically till he gets past the point of purchase. So, hypothetically >> right? Just to to >> Hypothetically, he could >> No, I understand what you're looking to do. >> Yes. >> You have him on camera from yesterday? >> Yes. >> You have receipts, anything >> Not yet. We haven't >> Who's um >> manager? >> Yeah, all right. Just just do what you got to do and let's cuz I don't want it to >> The store staff recognized the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Jose Santiago, had allegedly shoplifted from the same store the day before. This time, however, the store management gave officers the go-ahead to stop him before he could leave. >> What's your name? Manuel Lara. Come here. Sit down. You have ID on you? >> No, I do. >> What do you mean, no ID? You don't have ID on you? Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. What did he do just now? >> He just walked out all these items. >> All these items? You have it on on on video? Stand up. Stay there. Stay there. Quiet. Quiet. That's it. What is your name? >> Jose. >> Jose what? >> Manuel. >> Jose Manuel what? >> Cortez. >> Cortez, you have ID on you? >> No ID. >> You got to get the copy. You have anything that's going to cut him? Huh? With the suspect detained, officers now turn to the store manager to determine how they want to proceed. >> How do you want to do this? You want to You photograph it and then >> Yeah, they put the stuff there. They're going to scan it. We're going to photograph everything. >> And then you're going to meet us up at headquarters? >> Yeah, I'm going to bring everything everything but the receipt from yesterday, too. >> All right, good. All right, 114. We got a 10-35 here. Just run me that case number, please. >> 39872 3987 >> 23-39872 72 >> What's your name? >> Detective Gigante Gigante >> I think you so much. >> You're going to meet me up there, right? >> I got it. >> You you flip them? >> You will go to meet you yesterday no come back. >> Okay. >> You get all the info on this guy? >> He's coming up. He's meeting us at headquarters. >> By the end of the incident, Santiago was taken into custody not only for shoplifting, but also for multiple outstanding warrants.
