On May 24th, 2025, officers responded to a retail store after receiving a report that an 18-year-old woman had been caught attempting to steal merchandise valued at more than $1,000. Here's what unfolded next. >> Are you going to >> I want to speak to my dad first, and I need my phone cuz I don't have his phone number. >> Okay. You need to identify yourself. So, put your information on the piece of paper and we will call your dad. >> Yeah. Okay. You're 17. It's not how it works. You are not free to go and you're not free to do whatever you want. You need to identify yourself. We will call your dad, but you don't have the right to not identify yourself until your dad talks to you. Okay? You don't have that right. Just making that clear. If you don't want to identify yourself now, that's fine. We will charge you with something else. You are required to identify yourself. You are not free to go. You have to identify yourself. You can think about that. Um, she's in here. She doesn't want to give her information till she talks to her dad. I explained to her she doesn't have that right. She needs to identify herself. If she doesn't, she'll be charged with it. >> Um, and she sat there and continued to ponder while I close the door. The more difficult you make this, the more charges that you're going to get on yourself and the more difficult you're going to make this way charges. >> Okay, but here's the thing. So, as an adult, okay, having one charge versus multiple charges, right? And showing that you're uncooperative >> is a different. Listen, listen. I I understand that, but I just I understand that. But here's the thing. You're saying you're an adult. You're 18 years old. Technically, we don't have to give you the opportunity to talk to your dad. You're an adult. You can talk to him at the jail. >> Okay? But it's also dependent upon how cooperative you are with us. We're not trying to make this difficult. We're not saying you're a bad person. Just may have made a bad decision. But we need to be able to >> But we need to be able to identify you, right? And we need to be able to know who you are. >> And one charge versus maybe multiple charges and showing that you're uncooperative with us. It's not a good look. We're trying to help you out here.
