the tables turn fast when these not so smart scammers realize it's game over here are five cases when dumb scammers realize they've been caught number five Family Dollar employee busted in $5,000 merchandise scam a Family Dollar cashier is caught scamming the store letting friends and family walk out with over $5,000 in unpaid merchandise she Rings up cheap items like gum while allowing full carts to leave pocketing small payments from her accompli security footage reveals the scheme and the store manager compiles evidence including transaction logs and recorded statements from the employee I know you called me what's going on good afternoon how are youon afternoon we have a an employee that is being under ringing like she will charge a dollar and let the customer leave was about $150 merchandise uh multiple time during the month of January multiple time in the actually a little B generate multiple times in February and the last one was on Sunday um I interview her she's sitting in the back wrote a statement recording a statement she admitted to what happened and uh we just call you guys okay do you have any evidence of this videos I got I got full video and I got a a recorded statement I can't use a recorded statement because she's not issued her rights so I can't use a recorded statement so I I took it and I didn't have to read her right yeah but I have to under court of law under Fourth Amendment understood okay uh all right do you have a tal ever how much she actually took uh we still haven't finished how old is she I believe she's 21 22 h the officer then even ring it so you can see transaction when she had the end voice it okay to zero or you can see when she only scan a lollipop for 30 5 cents a dollar and then you see like a full bgy Liv in the store full of merchandise do you have um do you have the videos uh each time get in time yes okay um do you have a laptop or anything I can view it I can look at some we can view it right now in the screen yeah you also have this is also a log of everything right of everything some of the stuff is not long um I'm going to talk to you for a minute but I I don't want you to stop calling everybody I don't want people to start showing up here ain't nobody going to show up here but I'm not just going to I can't get in contact with myi I'm not just going to go to jail and nobody know am I'm not saying I don't know whether you going ja I'm I already de with police so many times I'm not dumb there's a reason y'all can't I'm not St well someone makes a complaint I have to come I have to respond and investig cops also review the evidence including videos of transactions showing customers paying as little as 59 cents for goods worth over $100 so that's that's why I'm here do you understand so Cent 59 cents so over 100 over 100 on that particular one 59 so what's what was the date uh the day of the day is March 5th at 122 1 so 35 that will be Sunday that will be the last transaction 21 what's the next one you got um 33 3 three what time 1956 do are you able to pull the the receip okay and or the link that you guys sent I can upload it to the file the logs further highlight consistent patterns of undercharging so back here that cost pay you9 this is another cost what was the date uh March 3rd Sunday 1956 so the other one was March 5th correct and this one is March 3rd rights in my are you choosing to speak with me um the only thing I got to say is if I'm going to jail I don't want to answer listen I all right so what I'm trying to tell you is that if someone say something I've I've known you for for I've come here and I talk to you whatever I don't know anything about you all I say is Hi are you doing I come to you I I purchase whatever I need to purchase I worked out I don't know anything about you someone say something I need to know what happened okay cuz a lot of time people say hey did you talk to so and so yeah she was nice she told me what happened you know she was having some issue whatever so I can present that to whoever I need to say to but what I'm trying to say is that I can't just go by what someone say I have to talk to you and get your side of the story okay all right um how long you been working here November so you've been working since October October or November okay M your part time or full time full time full time um you work normally day sh right both day and night are you married have kids I have kids how many kids three three kids you like working here do you have any problem with anybody here um who's your charged with felony Grand Theft and receives 24 months of probation number four scammer's second fake check scheme goes south a woman walks into a bank attempting to cash a check she claims as payment for a job unbeknownst to her the staff is already suspicious the bank staff promptly contacts the authorities and officers arrive to investigate what's going on with the check you're trying to cashier they don't think it's real they don't think it's real mhm it's a gig that I work that they gave me okay so somebody gave you the check in yeah I work to get them I be like it's not real they don't think it did yeah so we just want to make sure you don't knowingly know you're trying to catch a fraudulent check okay well then if it's all misunderstanding it's all misunderstanding you got your ID on you yeah do they got it okay I'll get it in a second who's the check from H who's the check from it's from this gig that I work with gigs smart gigsmart mhm here we go okay we'll talk to Y just a check from sovus okay what is what do you do for gigsmart what is that um there's different jobs that I can pick to work like what kind of job it's literally dis like anything and everything what do you like get on there and and um see what's available or and this isn't the only one that I use I use this Rolo there's different apps that I use to work different gigs and this was one that I worked at this truck stop where they was having thing and I was just so you did what did you do to earn this what did I do to un I worked there for 3 weeks and I was just helping them with their um it was like a month monster truck festival and I was helping them with the reservations and the cleanings and all that that was good I worked there for three weeks and then they they they gave it to you or sent it to you or who's the person that issued it to you do you know no I don't when asked for proof of employment or contact details for her employer she comes up empty the officers grow more skeptical as she struggles to provide basic information about the supposed job how do they um see that I haven't talked to him yet yeah we got another officer he'll talk to them when he gets here um the only thing we got was there was a female matching your description um trying to cash a a check that they think it's FR fig it's fraudulent yeah so that's why I'm here go ahead if it's something that you may not have knew it was a frul then you know mistakes are made and we can figure it out so we just got to investigate it them CU I need to get paid for what I work for that's not right and who do you who do you contact that's what I'm trying to figure out and what's the name of that site you said gigs smart like g i g s m a r t mhm is it a app mhm okay so app called gigsmart and and you saw a job about what did you say about trucks it was a monster truck festival monster truck festival where was that where is was the festival at this was in darville okay and then uh you said it was a three- we thing M did you have a contact person no did you get a phone number or something or how did you communicate with who you supposed to work for um they just sent me um information once I accept the gig they send me the address and to be there you said you received this in the mail M and you're saying you cash checks from this monster truck or from what no from a different gig but I never casat a this check okay Sharon Chris Porto that that's your signature and then that's their signature is that right this is my she do she the officer questions her further as they continue to investigate the fraud case how many gigs have you done through this site multiple M like three or four way more than that way more than that but the monster truck thing that's the only um this the first okay who do you bang through who who do you Bank through uh sop it's not not a big Bank sop okay like I said we're still figuring things out but I got to ask you have you ever been arrested for anything have you ever been arrested period uh yes what was you arrested for somebody else did in your car why would you do that how old are you now how old was you there okay what did they tell you when you went up here and gave them the the check and all that did they tell you why you was waiting was you getting suspicious or anything I mean I don't know exactly H you've been here but first time I came I was it I got you you said you don't have a contact person that you was deing with how did you how'd you get here did you drive where's your car at okay you still staying stateum or you stay in a now so like I said right now he just he got to investigate soon as he figure things out then we'll uh we'll know what's going on the woman attempts to pull up her work history on a gig app to support her claims but fails to locate any evidence of the job I will say it's kind of doesn't look good as far as you don't have the contact person that you I mean if I go work somewhere I'm going to know who I need to talk to and you know the phone number name all that stuff like that all my dogs I don't have no contact information anything I just have the address and so you see a job that's available you click on it and then you can accept it does it show the history of you accept in that one um does it show your job history period yeah does it show like the previous months uhuh just show the [Music] not showing that one when did you work you said 3 weeks but how long ago was that um April the third or four third or fourth that was when you started or ended at 3 weeks so 4 you must have just according to what you're saying you must have just recently received that right hang out by the front of the cars real quick I'm going holler it him we'll we'll see where we're going there okay okay so you just hang out by my car all not really put me at [Music] same does she know who this came from at all like Bank officials confirm it's fraudulent stating that the account it's tied to has been flagged for previous fraudulent activity no no only thing she's saying is she got that uh she got some out that she gets jobs off of and uh that one popped up she accepted it some um Monster Jam in a darville and uh she worked at she claiming she worked it for 3 weeks stting April 3rd or April 4th and waited for 3 weeks and then uh received that in the mail on the 29th that's my issue is like having a hard time disapproving whose accountants it comes back to Sharon Christie PTO that's what this account comes back to is that a real account here this is a real account is flag with a lot of frost she's actually in the process of closing her account this is not real at all these don't look any these check she said none of them none of cash this at all and this lady is already getting a bunch of yeah did they call her yeah she answered she said she has already yeah that's how for an arrest I mean she can't give no information I told her I told her to pull up history for the work things it's not there oh she Prov that I she was trying to pull it up but she couldn't she couldn't show it I mean what we can do is ask her again I had what's her name again all right so here [Music] here's we want you be honest with us cuz it seems to us that uh that you know what's going on and you never worked at the place for three weeks you can't provide any proof of it I just told you I don't know why my up Sor did you sign W9 or a W2 no it's not it's a 1099 it's not a um okay despite this the woman insists she didn't know the check was fraudulent and maintains her innocence not an actual you yeah did you take any document of your 1099 where you signed it the only docent documentation that they give me is at the end of this year everything that I okay well you should you still have to sign that $199 in the beginning and you know I've never had time do you have the envelope or anything this came with no okay so I mean I'm just going to be up front with you none of the check except for the person on it is real the check is completely false they don't even make cashier checks that look like this the cashier's number up here not real at all the only person and thing that is real on here is it's got your name right and then it's got an abbreviated portion of the remitter and again just to be completely transparent with where we're at right now they are already trying to close that account due to fraud account this specific account for fraud because people are trying to cash checks fraudin on her account so it's enough that they immediately knew this was a fake check and then were able to pull that up instantly so here's my concern is you can't show me any proof of you actually hav't been working over there I've got a fake check and I've got you trying to cash that fake tra which in and of itself regardless of anything is a charge on its [Music] own so I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt to show me some kind of info like I'm not trying to get in trouble for something and I need to get paid for what I work for yeah well this isn't going to do yeah I know that now do you have a contact info for anybody you're supposed to contact in regards hold on the situation worsens when the officers point out that attempting to cash a fraudulent check is a crime regardless of intent and it's just it's odd to me that everything was
