I decided to VI a police officers because I find true fulfillment in serving others what I will remember the most about the academy will definitely be the relationships I have [Music] built the goal of the Los Angeles Police Department Academy is nothing short of exceptional it's a transformative Journey designed to shape recruits into well-prepared resilient officers ready to Serve and Protect through Hands-On training and classroom instruction you'll gain the knowledge and expertise needed to excel in your role as a law enforcement officer from the intricacies of law enforcement procedures to honing your skills in areas like problem solving cultural sensitivity defensive tactics and and Firearm proficiency this is where the foundation for your successful career begins candidates must possess the self-discipline and determination to meet the Academy's challenges as an officer you can find yourself in extremely stressful situations therefore drill instructors will continually stress test you to gauge how you react and behave under strenuous circumstances [Music] [Music] and a lot of times you know we're going to have to in a split second you know be in a foot pursuit in a split second be um you know fighting someone else to place someone into into custody and so uh it's important for us to maintain that physical uh aspect in our lives uh not just at work but even in our personal lives hi I'm Officer Walker from the Lifetime Fitness unit here at the Academy you will be required to pass a physical fitness assessment also known as the PFA the PFA is a test used to track your physical fitness progress and to ensure that you meet the academy and the commission on peace officer standards and trading you're required to take three PFA exams during your 24 weeks of training the PFA counts the number of sit-ups and push-ups UPS you can complete in 1 minute increments you must also complete a Time 300 M Sprint a 1.5m run where you will be scored according to the amount of time it takes you to complete each [Music] event through your training you will be required to pass the postwork sample test battery a California state mandated examination required to become a law enforcement officer the work sample test battery consists of five events a 99 yd obstacle course a 165lb body drag for 32 ft on a flat surface a 6ft chain link fence climb a 6ft solid wall climb and a 500 yd run on a flat track again the faster each event is completed the higher you will score in order to maintain average performance in the police academy you must be able to complete at least 30 push-ups and 40 situps you should also be able to run two miles on a TR track in under 18 [Music] minutes in support and preparation for Academy training the Los Angeles Police Department offers the candidate advancement program also known as cap a free physical fitness program available to candidates currently in the testing process dedicated and consistent participation will transform you physically and prepare you mentally for the Academy [Music] training [Music] my community was getting Affiliated and um my parents always um reiterated you you know I want you I came to this country so that you can have a better opportunity to be somebody in life to do something great here to fulfill what you've been called to do and I was just always reminded how much they wanted the best for me and um and I took that very close to my heart as well as inter inter acting with with specific female officers they always laid it out for me that I I didn't have to follow the footsteps that that were laid before me in my community I could have I could do something [Music] different this is Officer Shi hatori with Farms training section Training Division recuit officers attending the LAPD policey will receive 119 hours of firearms training and 110 hours of tactics training the firearms training consists of the use of the department issued 9mm semi-automatic pistol in a 12 gaug pump action shotgun you will be required to pass a written examination and to memorize the four basic Farm safety rules you'll be required to pass two shooting tests during the daytime hours and two shooting tests during the night time with both pistol and a [Music] shotgun you'll also receive training on the exposure to chemical agents used in law enforcement you'll wear a gas mask and enter a structure containing tear gas you'll be required to remove place and clear the gas mask in the contaminated environment wasn't bad wasn't bad we got through it sir we got through it GL it you will also be exposed to an olisin capsicum spray or OC spray and manage the effects of the exposure to OC you'll also be exposed to taser for up to 5 Seconds to feel and understand the effects of the intermediate Force [Music] option during t tactics training you will be tested on your ability to make critical decisions during rapidly evolving tactical scenarios you'll be tested on your ability to evaluate and properly apply the use of force options these use of force options include taser OC spray and bean bag shotgun and as well as lethal Force you'll be taught how to properly respond to crimes in progress active Shooters domestic altercations and other emergency situations that could occur during your career as a police [Music] officer you'll be trained and tested in the emergency vehicle operations course during the academy you will learn to operate an emergency equipped vehicle safely and accurately by demonstrating a working knowledge of the six fundamentals of vehicle control as instructed and demonstrated you'll be required to pass Five post tests a collision avoidance simulator test a sloweed skills course test a code 3 response driving test a Pursuit driving test and a skid control exercise test [Music] these are only some of the challenges you will face in order to be successful in the Los Angeles Police Department academy uh my advice for them is to be resilient and be patient patient be uh physically prepared um The Academy is demanding in all types of ways mentally physically and emotionally so being able to mentally prepare for that will
