Appreciate it, man. >> Good dude right here, y'all. >> All of these. >> I got this. >> I got you. Y'all see them cut my horse off. That's animal right there. And I'm not done with it. I'm going back and I need I want to I want to press charges on them. The biggest problem here was that the initial officers tried to enforce a traffic restriction that did not apply to this horse rider. Illinois law generally gives people riding animals on roadways the same rights and duties applicable to vehicle drivers with specific exceptions such as controlled access highways. The officer also demanded a driver's license even though Hollingsworth was riding a horse rather than operating a motor vehicle. and the investigative detention did not automatically give the officer authority to demand a driver's license simply because he wanted to identify him. The encounter also became more problematic when the officer cut in front of the horse. Illinois traffic law requires motorists to exercise care around people riding horses and prohibits reckless driving unnecessarily close to them. Hollingsworth repeatedly objected because the maneuver caused his horse to clip itself, which can be extremely dangerous for other vehicles on the roadway. But thankfully, all was good in this specific incident. What ultimately mattered was that Hollingsworth refused to surrender his rights simply because several officers initially insisted that he was violating the law. Once the responding officers recognized that horseback riding on that roadway was lawful, he was allowed to leave and continue on his way. The officers should have verified the applicable traffic law before detaining him, should not have demanded a driver's license as though he were operating a motor vehicle, and should have exercised additional caution when positioning a cruiser around the course.
