It was about 1:30 in the morning on March 30th, 2025. At the intersection of Pinewald Kzik Road and Double Trouble Road, a red 2017 Honda Accord suddenly left the roadway and came to rest nearly 150 ft deep into the woods. The driver was 27-year-old Alexis Gaza. And when officers asked how the crash happened, her answer shocked them. She admitted she had been texting her ex at the very moment of impact. Think about it. One careless message, one moment of distraction, and she ended up 150 ft into the trees. What looked like a simple late night crash was about to turn into a full DWI investigation because officers soon detected the smell of alcohol and clear signs of impairment. And this is where the body cam footage begins. >> Were you driving? >> Were you driving? >> I'm not saying anything, but that's my car. >> What do you mean you're not saying anything? That's >> my car. Okay. Okay. Well, how >> did you end up there? I missed the turn. >> Missed the turn. >> Are you injured at all? Okay. >> Sorry. Hey, can one of you guys stay here? One of you guys stand here. >> Well, just watch. This truck's going to be coming in here. >> Yeah, I got you. >> Come on. You said your pocketbook is in your car. >> Yes, sir. >> Do you mind if I grab your license, registration, and insurance? >> Uh, registration. Insurance is on my phone. >> Okay. >> Uh, registration. I feel like I left it at home. >> Okay. >> It might not be my Yeah. >> All right. But your license is in your purse. >> It's in my um my driver's license. >> Oh, sorry. >> All right. I asked you to go back. >> Are you sure you don't want to go to the hospital? >> I'm sure. >> Well, while they're talking to you, I'm just going to have you sign two things. Just one that you allow us. You allow consent for us to check you out, but you don't want to go to the hospital. sign. Anything changes, you can always call us back. So, this one's just going to be for HIPPA. So, we can't go explicitly any information with anybody that's HIPPA. >> You're just going to sign right there. It's either sign or initial, whatever you're more comfortable with on the way right in here. I see it. >> This is just for your insurance. And then there's going to be one more that you last check you out. You don't want to go to the hospital this time. >> All is we go the [ __ ] wrong turn. >> Well, this is this is just that you last check you out and you don't want to go to the hospital. >> This she's not going. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. 25 >> got it. Then I have a couple more tests I would like you to do and then we're going to go from there. Okay. >> You don't want your shoes for the test? >> Um I guess I mean >> that's the only place I'd be is the trunk. >> Okay. >> No, I had my shoes on before. >> Are they in the front with They should be. I'm like really depressed right now. I don't even know what to say. >> But everyone everyone's okay besides me, right? >> Well, it was only you involved. >> I know. I know. You just don't know anymore. >> I feel like the scumbag. >> Things happen. We'll move forward from here. Um, yeah, but nobody else is injured. No one's injured. I mean, and you're absolutely positive. You don't want to get checked out. >> All right. >> Um, I just kind of want to go home. Unfortunately, where we're at right now, yeah, that's not going to be the case. Where is Homer? You live in Bayville. >> It's Tom River. >> Tom River. Okay. And that's the only driver's license you have, right? You don't have a New Jersey driver's license. >> No, it's uh Arizona. >> Just Arizona. Okay. >> Yeah. >> All right. They're going to look for some shoes for you. I'm just going to hang out with you in the meantime. >> All right. You guys the only rig on tonight? Yep. >> Typical. Oh, after that boat crash. >> Yeah. >> How was that? >> Not bad. >> Yeah. >> Four patients, three of them went to the hospital. >> Alexa, do you have any updated insurance or is it all the same policy still? >> There you go. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. same policy number. >> Um, it should be >> Are you willing to do a couple more tests for me? >> Like what kind of tests? >> Just some balance tests, that's all. >> I mean, like, what else am I going to do? >> If you want to do them, I'll tell you all the instructions and everything and we'll do them. You don't want to do them, then we're going to go from there. I'm not trying to be disrespectful at all. I just like don't know. >> That's all. That's that's literally all supposed to do. >> There's a walk and turn test and there's one leg and stand test. That's all. >> And then >> and then we're going to go from there. >> If I don't do it, >> if you don't do it, then we'll go from there. Do you want to do it or not? It's completely up to you. >> Can I be honest with you? >> Sure. >> I just want to go home and go to bed. >> Okay. All right. So, at this time, you're going to be placed under arrest for suspicion of uh driving while intoxicated. Okay. >> Okay. All right. So, you don't want to go to the hospital. I'm going to bring you transport you back to headquarters. We'll have to go through some process and stuff from there. >> Probably take me 45 minutes to an hour. Do you have anyone that can pick you up? >> Maybe. >> Maybe. Where's home? >> Tom River. >> Tom's River. Do you live with anyone? >> No. Any family nearby? >> No. Any friends? >> Is she going? >> Yeah. I probably wouldn't do that, though. I'm pretty embarrassed. All right, Alexis, I'm have you step out for me? >> I don't even know like what am I what am I supposed to do? >> He's going to tell you everything that he's going to do step by step as we go along. >> Listen, like I said, we move forward from here. You can't control what happened at this point. >> I thought that was my >> I thought it was my jacket, honestly. >> Um, I tore my ACL, just so you know. >> Okay. Okay. >> Are you willing to do those tests for me or no? >> Can I be honest with you? >> Yeah. >> Like why? >> So these >> already in trouble. >> These are the standardized field sobriety tests, right? This is what we have everyone go through. If you want to do them, we can do them. If you don't want to do them, then we won't. >> So what do you what happens when you don't do them? I'm so cold. >> Are you? >> Yeah. A little bit. >> Like I said, you have the choice to do it. If you don't want to do it, what's that? >> What's that? >> I'm like I'm very disappointed. Okay. >> So I'm not really sure. I mean, >> all right. >> You know, >> it's up to you. Do you want to do the test? Yes or no? >> You're already displaying signs of intoxication. All right. You are involved in a motor vehicle crash. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Uh the the if you pass the test, then you pass the test and you go home. If you fail the test, then you're coming with us. All right. But based off our observations right now, >> there's enough probable cause to believe that you may be intoxicated. >> Where you coming from? my friend's house. >> Okay. So, this either you're going to do the test now or you're not. >> All right. Let's just I at this point like >> Do you want to do the test? >> Well, I mean, if you don't do it, what happens? >> You're going to be placed under arrest, >> right? >> Okay. So, >> regardless, so cold. >> You're going to do the test? >> I'm asking you. Are you going to do a test? >> Miss, are you going to do the test? >> Oh, it's it's yes or no. >> Okay. >> Do most people do it? Everybody does it. >> All right. So, whatever. I don't care. >> All right. >> You know, it's like >> I know. All [Music] right, stand right here for me. I'm going to let this fire truck get out of the way. Just stay with this officer for one moment. Okay. >> I will, but >> All right, Alexis, towards me. >> I'm like fighting. >> Your hands down by your side. >> It's so cold. >> I'll try. We'll go through it. Okay. I want you to take your left foot, put it out in front of you. >> My left foot? >> Yep. Your left foot, put it out in front of you. Take your right foot, put it in front of that left foot, connecting your heel to your toe. >> Okay, stay in this position until I tell you to begin. Do you understand? >> Yeah. It's freezing. >> Okay. When I tell you to begin, you're going to take nine heel to toe steps, counting out each step out loud, connecting your heel to your toe, keeping your hands down by your side, it's going to look like this. One, two, three, until you reach nine. When you reach the ninth step, keep your lead foot on the ground, taking a small series of steps, turning around. Then you're going to go back nine returning steps. One, two, three, and so on until you reach nine. When you begin the test, don't stop until the test is concluded. Counting out your steps as you go through, keeping your hands down by your side, connecting your heel to your toe. Do you understand? >> I think so. >> Okay. Pretend like there's an imaginary line right in front of you. Okay. >> Nine. >> Yes. Do you have any questions? >> I don't think so. >> Okay. You may begin. >> I mean, I'm not like the best at this, but >> It's okay. >> One 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 >> And then what do we do after? >> Just do the test just as the instructions were given. Okay. >> [ __ ] Uh, >> I I don't remember. I'm sorry. I have a lot on my mind. I don't remember. You said turn. >> Yep. >> Like >> just as the instructions were given. Okay. >> Sorry, sir. >> Just as the instructions were given. Okay. >> Okay. Place nine and then place nine back. >> If that's what I said, then yes. >> I thought that's what you said. >> Okay. >> Like I don't know. And then walk nine back. >> Yes, ma'am. >> One, two, three, four, five. >> Okay. All right. You can turn around for me. All right. One more test. Okay. >> You're going to raise either foot of your choosing 6 in off the ground. While doing so, you're going to count 1 1,000, 2, 1,000, 3, 1,000, and so on until I tell you to stop. While doing so, keep your arms down by your side. >> Okay? >> So, like I'm just walking. >> Nope. >> You're going to lift either foot of your choice, counting 1,00 2 100 3 100 and so on until I tell you to stop. It's going to look like this. Hands down by your side. 1 100 2 100 3 100 4 100. You're going to keep going until I tell you to stop. While doing so, keep your foot parallel 6 in above the ground. Do you understand the instructions? >> Okay. One second. You may begin. 1 100 2 100 3 100 4 100 5 100 6 100 7 100 8 100 9 100,000 10 1 100 1,000 10 2 10 2 10 3 10 4 10 5 10 6 10 7 Just >> raise your foot back up. Keep going. 10 8 10 9 >> Uh, >> all right. You can put your foot down. Okay, one more test. >> I'm just going to have you turn around for me for a second and put your arms out. [Music] >> Place your hands behind your back for me. Okay, at this time you're going to be placed under arrest for driving intoxicated. Okay. [Music] 60. [Music] >> I know they're uncomfortable. Headquarters is right around the corner and then I'll get them off you. Okay. All right. Just walking through. We're going to come over here. >> Yeah. [Music] >> I understand it's upsetting. All right. I get it. >> At the end of the day, I'm happy you're okay. Pass. >> What's that? >> You can get like will pass. >> What will pass? It's only traffic stuff. It's traffic citations. State of New Jersey DWI is a criminal. >> Oh, no. But it is me. >> What's that? >> It is similar. >> I understand. Listen, I'm just happy that you're okay. No one else is injured. We're going to go over to the other side of the car. >> I kind of feel like this is not bad, honestly. >> Listen, stuff happens. People make mistakes. All right. Do you have anything in your pockets? Poke me. Stick me. Uh, I don't think so. >> You don't think so? What would it be if it was? There's no needles or anything like that. >> No, not like No, it wouldn't be that. Maybe aderall. >> Aderall? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Do you take any aderall tonight? >> No. >> I'd be whole by now. Are you kidding me? >> I know. >> No, it's not really like that. Like, >> all right. >> Can I be honest with you, though? >> Yeah. >> Um, my like my wrist like I kind of like fell on it. It kind of hurt so bad. >> I got them nice and loose for you. I can put two fingers through there. Okay. >> I don't know yet. >> And like I said, headquarters is literally around the corner. I'll get you out of them. All right. Just have a seat for me. Just watch your head. [Music] >> Yep. [Music] >> Sorry. >> It's okay. >> Okay. >> Trying to put your seat belt on you. Just sit with your back towards the back of the seat. Okay. I know it's a little uncomfortable. >> Not really used. Ow, that [ __ ] hurts. >> No one's used to it. >> It's funny punishment. >> All right, go. Sorry. Sorry. Not trying to be rude. >> You're fine. [Music] >> You got it? >> Yep. >> All right. Headquarters is right around the corner. It's only like I'm going to ask him to move his truck up so that one second. >> Nice. You throw her bag up there for me. Okay. In the driver seat and her license. Perfect. Thank you. This car is just trying to get out of here real quick. You good to go? >> Yep. >> 41 103. Okay. >> Walking towards me this way. >> Yeah. >> Listen, people make mistakes. I get it. Like I said, the important thing is you're okay. No one else was in here, thankfully. >> Follow me. Just watch your step. >> I don't have anyone like >> Perfect. Can you please pull a report number for 163's car? >> We're going to come this way. Set the seat for me on the bench. Please have a seat for me right here. Our policy. I do have to leave one on. Okay. Do me a favor. Can you just open up your mouth for me? You have anything in your mouth? >> Uh-uh. >> Okay. Just open it up for me. Say, "Ah." >> Sorry. >> I know. >> Uh, >> okay. Lift up your tongue. >> Perfect. Thank you. Fix your birthday. You start a 20-minute timer. So, are you from Arizona? No from Jersey but moved to Arizona. Yeah. You're back to Tom River now. >> Yeah. I got a couple things I got to read you. Okay. Alexis Garza, you have been arrested for driving while intoxicated. NJSA 394-50. Law requires you to submit breath samples of your breath for purposes of testing to determine alcohol content. A record of taking the breath samples, including the test results, will be made. Upon your request, a copy of the record will be made available to you. After you provide breath samples for testing, you have the right at your own expense to have a person or physician of your own selection take independent samples of your breath, blood, or urine for independent testing. If you refuse to provide breath samples of your breath, you will be issued a separate summon for the refusal. A court may find you guilty for both refusal and driving while intoxicated. If the court finds you guilty of the refusal, you'll be subject to various penalties, including license revocation for 20 up to 20 years, a fine of up to $2,000, installation of an ignition interlock, and referral to an intoxicated driver resource center. These penalties may be in addition in addition to penalties imposed by the court for any other offense of which you are found guilty. You have no legal right to have an attorney, physician, or anyone else present for the purpose of taking the breath samples. You have no regal legal right to refuse to give or delay giving samples of your breath. Any response from you other than an ambiguous ambiguous and or conditional in any respect to my request for you to provide the breath samples will be treated as a refusal to submit breath testing. Even if you agree to take the test but do not follow my instructions, do not properly inform, do not properly perform the test, or do not provide sufficient breath samples, I will charge you with refusal to submit breath testing. I repeat, the the law requires you to submit samples of your breath for testing. Will you submit samples of your breath? >> Whatever. Like at this point, there's got to get it get it over with. >> I just need a yes or a no. >> Yes. Okay. >> This is like so bad. >> Like I said, so this is all traffic stuff. Like you're not charged criminally with anything. Thankfully, there was no one else involved in this accident. If you hit someone and someone died, this would be >> this would be completely different story right now. >> Okay. Okay. Okay. >> I mean, most people don't. That doesn't happen, though. >> Car accidents where people die. It happens every day. >> All right. You said you were at a prince's house before. >> Hey, I'm like really not okay, though. >> What's that? >> I'm like really not okay. >> What do you mean by you're really not okay? What's going on? Besides the obvious going off for evaluation. Excuse me. I'm going to put these in your bag. All right. You ready? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Follow me. >> Oh my god. [Applause] very bad actually. >> That's right. It happens. All right. Come this way. >> You know, it's just like >> Yeah. >> This has to stay up front. Okay. It's our policy. >> Okay. >> Just put your seatelt on for me, please. >> Should we just like Can we just go to my house so my sister can sign off so I don't stress my grandpa out? We already told grandpa. Okay. We're going to grandpa's house. >> Oh, you spoke with him? >> Yeah. Yeah, they're off. >> Oh, he answered. >> Yep. >> Okay. >> Okay. One second. Pat. >> Um, >> Pat, do you think like everything's doing okay? >> It will be. >> Promise. >> I promise. Like I said, this is strictly traffic. Okay. >> Starting route to >> the important thing is that you're okay. No one else was injured. >> Then turn left. >> This is one of those things where you're just going to move forward. You didn't. That's the important thing, right? No one else is hurt. You're not hurt. Six of Berkeley. Copy starts >> and my car too. If I I like >> 99937. >> Close the Sally, please. >> I'm sorry. >> That's why I'm working with you, right? Like the sergeant just told you. Most other people would not give you that many attempts. >> Turn left onto Pinewald Keswig Road. >> Seriously, pray God. >> At 1.7 miles, turn right onto Do Road. >> Do you usually drink or is it like honest with you? >> Yeah. I haven't drank in so long. >> Yeah, I could tell. [Music] It just like got through like a really horrible like breakup and people die every day. So like >> listen, everybody's going through something. I get it. I'm listening to you. >> At the next light, right? >> Well, I'm happy someone saw you. I'm cold, you know, cuz like you were you were probably a good 150 ft into the woods. >> At the light, turn right onto Do. >> Yeah, you were pretty deep. Like, god forbid he didn't see you. He probably would have been sitting there for a little while until someone either I drove by or another passer by. >> In 1.8 miles, turn left onto Davenport Road. >> Yeah. >> Keep saying like This is traffic. >> Yes. >> In half a mile, turn left onto Canterbury Lane. >> No. Like I said, in the state of New Jersey, it's a traffic offense. It's not like you were arrested for like simple assault or harassment or touristic threats or something of that standards, right? So, this isn't something criminal. It's a traffic related offense. You said you talk to my grand >> I did not. The other officer So this is all Perkeley Township. So there was another officer that's up here. He went and spoke with your grandfather. >> Is there like any contact >> contact me? >> Yeah. You would just go through the police department. obviously not. >> Yeah, but at the same time, I'm not out here to get you, right? Do I have a job that I have to do? Correct. I do. >> I'm not out here to be a jerk. Have I been a jerk to you at all tonight? I was going to say I didn't think so, but >> what's that? >> I don't think >> No, listen. I treat everyone the way I would want to be treated, right? You were nice to me. I was nice to you. The end of the day, like I said, I do have a job to do. I did do what I have to do, right? But I'm always going to treat you with fairness and respect. >> The destination is on your left. >> Arrived. >> 60 Berkeley 109. Copy. >> 99942. >> Do you want to go and speak with someone? Are you sure? >> It sucks, girl. >> I know you're going through a lot. Okay. >> Once again, are you having any thoughts about wanting to harm yourself or anyone else? >> What's that? >> Okay. You don't want to harm yourself. Okay. Watch your step. Okay. So, you made a mistake. You're okay. No one's hurt. That's the important thing. Okay. >> Do they? >> Yeah. My parents hurt. >> Are they? >> I get it. >> Closer. Come on. Thank you. >> Sure. Alexis. >> Yeah. >> This is your bag. Okay. >> Thank you. I appreciate it. >> I just have to go over a piece that we broke with you. Oh, go ahead. Come on in. All right. [Music] >> All right. I'm sorry to wake you. I know it's it's early in the morning. Okay. >> Do you? >> We're close. >> All right. So, Alexis, do you mind if I tell Grandpa? >> Of course. >> All right. So, she was involved in a motor vehicle accident. Okay. Um during the course of the investigation, she did show signs of impairment. Um evaluations were conducted there. She was subsequently placed under arrest for suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Okay. So she was issued several summones for that. Um a part of this, this is a potential liability form. What this is stating is that you were assuming responsibility for her. Okay. >> I call officer said that 12 hours or something >> approximately. Yes. So, I'll read it for you. Yep. >> Yeah.
