Newly obtained audio recordings from a police interrogation alleged Judge Kevin Mullins engaged in sex torsion acts inside the same chambers where he was killed. The recordings are from a 2022 criminal investigation into Letcher County Deputy Ben Fields who was convicted and sent to prison earlier this year for the rape and sodomy of a female inmate. The woman heard on the recordings is victim Sabrina Atkins who has been publicly vocal about her claims against the convicted deputy using his position of power to pressure her and other women to have sex in exchange for favorable treatment. Understandably so, how did two friends, colleagues with a great relationship for years and years how does it suddenly go south to the point that one shoots the other, you know, point blank in his chambers on video? And then, I mean, very peacefully turns himself in like he I I mean, it just it's it's mind-boggling. New body cam video obtained by Fox News Digital shows state police questioning former Letcher County Sheriff Shaun Mickey Stearns just minutes after he allegedly shot and killed District Judge Kevin Mullins in his chambers. This is Shaun Mickey Stearns, the Sheriff of Letcher County. Born in 1980, he was first elected in 2018 and won re-election in 2022. He's known in the community as an active involved figure and a family man with a teenage daughter. Before becoming Sheriff Stearns actually worked inside the courthouse. He spent several years as a bailiff in Judge Kevin Mullins's courtroom. During that time, the two developed more than just a professional connection. By most accounts, they were close. Some even described them as personal friends. They were known to grab lunch together at a local spot called Streetside. >> Kevin were really close and good friends. I never saw any hostilities between them. >> Residents in Letcher County are struggling to cope with a shooting involving two of its most prominent citizens. Now, let's walk through what happened that day. Around noon, the judge, the sheriff, and two members of the court staff are gathered inside the judge's chambers. About 6 minutes later, Stein stands up, says a few words to the group, and says goodbye to the judge. He even makes a quick joke, which gets a laugh. As he leaves, you can briefly see the judge standing in the doorway behind him. The sheriff then heads toward the break room, saying goodbye to other staff members along the way. The judge follows shortly behind, also exchanging farewells. Not long after we see the judge and his staff heading out to grab something to eat. By 12:15 p.m., Stein is seen entering a restaurant with the judge and the rest of the group. Later, around 1:38 p.m., everyone is back inside the judge's chambers. The judge sits down, puts on his robe, and prepares to continue with the day's cases. Fast forward to 2:32 p.m., the judge is still on the bench reviewing paperwork. At that point, Stein returns to the courthouse and walks straight toward the judge's chambers. Court has wrapped up for the day, and the judge is inside with staff. Stein asks everyone to step out, saying he wants to speak with the judge alone. Once they're alone, he sits down and begins asking the judge a series of questions. Then, something unusual happens. Stein pulls out his phone, looks at it briefly, and then leans forward asking if he can see the judge's phone. The judge hands it over. Stein then asks for the passcode and enters it himself. It appears he's searching through the device, possibly looking for a specific number. As he continues, his demeanor suddenly changes. He becomes visibly agitated. Moments later, he pulls out a firearm and opens fire on the judge. Court staff nearby hear the gunshots and immediately panic. People begin evacuating the building, unsure of what's happening, but assuming there may be an active shooter. In a shocking turn, Stein, the one responsible for the shooting, also exits the building. He's seen walking down the street before turning back around. As staff remain outside after evacuating, he walks past them, reenters the courthouse, and ultimately turns himself in. courthouse rather than risk being transported to another facility, telling police quote, "I leave this building, I won't take another breath." So, listen. Let's just Let's Do you want to tell us what happened? That's up to you. I'm not I'm not trying to force you. It's up to you if you want to tell us what happened. I mean, like I said, something led up to this. It just didn't happen. I just We would just like to know why uh it transpired this way. If you don't want to, that's up to you. No. Okay. You got to kill me then. No. No. You got to kill You got to kill me. No. Don't worry about it. Don't worry about This is you know, let's be fair. Nobody's going to lay a finger on you. I promise you. made our client feel that there was no other choice than to do what he did. So, it it almost sounds like you think he he snapped. I mean, this was a a reaction. Well, yeah, and that would be textbook extreme emotional disturbance, but the you know, with the textbook example always of finding your significant other with someone else, and in the moment, you know, in the older case law, they referred to it the heat of passion. And and that's pretty much the same line of reasoning that extreme emotional disturbance follow. At this point, we don't have a complete picture, but what I think was apparent very early is that there was there was a sudden there was a sudden inflammation of passion you know, of emotion that transpired in the moments just before the tape came on in the clip that we saw. And so this tape was edited to to cut out anything that happened just prior. And we think the moments just prior will tell the whole story. I don't know at this point what um what ultimately was on that phone. They're examining the phones, but we believe that um based upon the statements that our client made just following arrest as well as the indication that there was this exchange of phones or viewing of phones, that something in that moment >> Newly obtained audio recordings from a police interrogation alleged Judge Kevin Mullens engaged in sex torsion acts inside the same chambers where he was killed. The recordings are from a 2022 criminal investigation into Letcher County Deputy Ben Fields who was convicted and sent to prison earlier this year for the rape and sodomy of a female inmate. The woman heard on the recordings is victim Sabrina Adkins who has been publicly vocal about her claims against the convicted deputy using his position of power to pressure her and other women to have sex in exchange for favorable treatment. But she says Judge Mullens was involved as well. But he does have some video tapes and some stuff in the judge's chambers. What kind of stuff? Just uh with girls having sexual stuff. What what describe Did have you seen the video? I've seen one partly of you know, um just him having sex with girls to further their ability to get out of jail. Who was having sex? >> Um being and just some high reps up there. Who? The judge and And you saw the video? >> Mhm. Yeah. What did you see on the video? I mean you you I mean I've seen the judge one time having sex with a girl. Who was the girl? I don't know cuz I don't know a lot of people from around. Where was it at? In the sofa in the judge's chambers. Is that the same place that you that you were meeting being? Is that how you know it was the judge's chambers? And this was judge Mullins. Now Atkins' attorney has gone on record saying quote, "It's like they were running a brothel out of that courtroom." And Atkins along with another woman filed a civil rights lawsuit against the deputy. Sheriff Steins was also named in the lawsuit and he was deposed in the ongoing suit days before shooting Mullins back in September. But further in those recordings, Atkins can be heard saying Sheriff Steins was involved in the sexual scandal as well. Did you saw the video of the judge? Any other videos that you actually saw? No. They said that uh Sheriff Steins is involved. I don't know. Um Who said that? Try to get the Sheriff to get him to make a Mickey. Mickey used to do the same thing when he was over at house arrest. Now of course Ted and Julia, these are extremely heinous allegations against Sheriff Steins and the late Judge Mullins. And as of now, we do know Steins has pleaded not guilty to murder regarding that shooting. Recently Steins' daughter has come out and denounced these allegations. say that moments before the shooting the sheriff used the judge's phone to call his teenage daughter whose number was apparently saved in the judge's phone. Rumors began to fly that the judge was in a relationship with the daughter. Hello everyone. My name is Laila Stines. I am 18 years old and Now the sheriff's daughter Laila Stines is finally addressing those rumors in a series of Tik Tok videos. Do you all not have anything better to do than to sit and gossip? You were taking my pain and making it your pleasure. >> She also had this to say. A lot of you were asking what stories, what do you mean by gossip? And what I mean by that is the stories that were made up about me and the other party. The rumors that had been spread about me. Burr also testified additional video showed Stines looking at Mullen's phone several times. He said Stines tried to call his daughter and then tried to call his daughter from Mullen's phone as well. Have you issued a search warrant for it? Yes. Okay. And uh have officers confirmed that the sheriff's daughter's phone number was on Judge Mullen's phone? So what's the deal? It's obvious something is going on that has not yet come to light. Why was he so afraid of being executed? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for watching. If you like that case, YouTube thinks you'll love these as well.
