[Music] welcome everybody my name is deputy chief matt hedrick and i'm sheriff mark lam and thank you for joining us on behind the bars [Music] [Applause] today it's going to be barricaded inmate day and this happens quite often now this one was just from the other day it is and i have not seen the video yet so i haven't seen the video i did get the email telling me what happened yep so we're gonna check it out barricaded inmate that's typically they'll get it behind they somehow jam their doors open or closed this guy he was able to jam the door closed with the tablet right yep so we got um they've been trying to de-escalate this guy this guy is refusing to comply and so um we'll have someone at the door just imploring him looking just listen to us put your hands out let us come in there let's check your vitals let's let us make sure you're safe there's actually eight minutes of them trying to de-escalate the situation verbally using all the tactics that these guys are trained to do and now you're you've also got cert that's one of the cool things about our you know like you have swat on the road we have cert which is our unit that does all it does all the entries it has to deal with combative inmates um or combative pod this guy is actually getting sprayed with gas or pepper spray right it's pepper spray but it's in this it's in this gas container like a fire i'll tell you if you've had pepper spray it sucks it sucks but they're impervious to pain at times and this individual seems like he's having a kind of a mental breakdown you know he's going to start to oh now we got hit with pepper ball and i'll tell you right now i've been shot with the pepper ball gun by my staff just so i can since i know exactly what this experience is it's nothing nice this is nothing nice this guy is suffering so now they make entry finally and what we do is when you make entry you're just going to want to get control of the subject as quick as possible to minimize anybody getting hurt both them and our officers and they're doing a good job we overwhelm you with force um so that there's just really no space for them to move and hurt our people so now you see these guys all have mass on because they just sprayed oc in there they just hit the pepper ball a bunch of times so they've got massive it's not easy to fight with this guy while you're wearing a mask no it's not and we have rocky white there he's one of my sergeants yeah he's not one he's he's not going to wear a mask he's just a tough guy and in fact he called he's a bigger man to me i'm not going in there for that he called me before they they went entry they always like to give me a heads up on what's going on and i asked him let me know if you need my emotional support i'm watching this video he needs some emotional support right now once that stuff gets in your eyes oh miserable it will make powers of us all look at him crying so when rocky rocky watches this we love you brother you're strong but in the end we get this guy out so one of the questions we get is this is a mental health issue why are we treating them like this because we get it on the road too are mental health people always docile or can they be dangerous as well oh they're extremely dangerous because you can't you can't guess and what they're doing i can assure you both on the road and in the jail we use every tactic available to us and all the training we have to try to de-escalate mental health situations but we also have to be very aware that mental health situations can be extremely dangerous some of the worst situations i've been in have been with people that are exhibiting mental health issues guys did a great job neutralizing this situation uh which clearly was a mental health situation so in in as you can see what a great opportunity to come and serve your county your country and be a part of something this great with this type of training we would love to have you guys in our family we're hiring and we'd like you said we'd love to have you part of the pcso family thank you for watching another episode of behind the barns [Music]
