So, it's been 25 years since Jay was killed in line of duty. And some days it seems like it was a lifetime ago. But most days it still feels like it was yesterday. When I met him, he said [music] he that he wanted to become an officer and a deputy and kind of follow his dad's footsteps. Jason was very excited. [music] He loved his uniform. He was always ironing it, making sure it was [music] nice and perfect. And he just loved his job. That was something that he always wanted. He wanted to serve the community. This is [music] where uh I believe his journey was going to go. He wanted to [music] protect. You know, not only his family, but everyone that [music] he was around. I couldn't There's no way I could tell him not to do it when that was his his goal in life. All you can do is support [music] them and be there, even though it was a scary scary job. He was a really good street cop. He just was proactive and just had that knack of just doing [music] a lot of good street cop work. Part of the legacy he's left behind outside of the agency is with his family. >> [music] >> When Jason met Karina, his whole life changed. First of all, he was such a handsome man. >> [laughter] >> My close [music] friend and his close friend were dating at the time. They introduced us. And um >> [music] >> he asked me out on a date and we went on a date. He he's like "The moment I met you, the moment I saw you, I knew you were going to be >> [music] >> my wife and and the mother of my kids." He loved his kids and he loved his family. He He was a family [music] man. He's like, "No. I want to change the first diaper. I want to feed them first." He bragged about his kids all the time. His boys >> [music] >> It was just he was just on it. >> That kind of his whole life kind of revolved around that once [music] once he had his boys. The day that it happened, I heard all the radio traffic and I asked if they needed any assistance and the dispatcher said, "10-4, 6-13's down." He was just was taking the weight from us. And it's just not fair. I do want people to know that Jason, he was a very dedicated, loving man. He wanted to serve and protect. And he also loved and protected his family. So, May 4th is very hard. And just because it's been 25 years doesn't mean it doesn't hurt anymore. It still hurts as if it was yesterday. [music] People need to think about that. These are real people that are out there putting their lives on the line for the communities [music] that they serve. We owe them and their families everything for the sacrifice that they made for the greater good.
