using on Saturday mornings we start about nine o'clock we work at cleaning up the farm and getting the area prepared that we're going to do therapy my name is Kelly Houlihan and I'm the founder and our organization is called hoofbeats with heart we had approximately a hundred kids that have gone through the redirection program with the sheriff my name is Leticia Martinez and I am a licensed professional counselor I actually get more results faster here than what I would in an office I'm Nick's mom I'm hoping that he takes advantage of that and doesn't get himself into further trouble in the future so but it's been nice because he's really a good kid I realized that we needed to do something for our youth especially the youth we're struggling making poor decisions the kids in our program are either kids that were referred by a deputy or a parent who are struggling with one of their kids a lot of the kids are there because of experimenting with drugs in some way if you were to look at your jail population I would say that a good 20 to 30 percent of that population and I think that's a conservative estimate I think that 20 to 30 percent probably could have been affected in a positive manner if they would have had a program like if we went to Watsonville Watsonville California to look at a program they had we went to Scottsdale PD here in Arizona to look at a program they had and when we had gotten through all those things that came back to the county attorney and I had a pretty good vision of what we wanted to do sat down between myself the county attorney juvenile probation juvenile detention here in the county he came up with the sheriffs redirection program you gotta be determined why does it always go right no doesn't always go right Ricky what else we decided to do for classes so the program takes about two months for the kids to go through it is a lot of work I mean I take time out of my personal schedule to come every Tuesday sometimes Wednesdays I've gotten to these kids homes I've taught them in their homes it takes a lot of time but they're worth it I try to be to every class and I try to show up to to at least a portion of the horse therapy on Saturdays the horses are very intelligent they pick up on emotion there's a lot of research too so just being around animals and horses in general you know regulates our central nervous system he likes it he likes working with the horses he actually said it is really fun I love it I feed off of it I think it's been just as beneficial to me to be part of these kids lives it has been for them when they first come they're like oh I had to come to a farm I have to pick up poop you know I don't really want to be here and usually by the time they leave they have a great time even if this program only saved one child it would be worth it but we've seen that it's much more fruitful than that the program that the sheriff's built that we worked hard on for last year is is a gift to these kids I mean everybody makes a mistake in their life and he's giving them a second chance [Music]
