I'm Deputy Zach Wheeler and I work for the Pinal County Sheriff's Office and I have K9 Barry. I'm Deputy Kenneth Nardelli with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office. I'm currently assigned K9 Morgan. Morgan's one of our new dogs. Um he came over with his brother Barry. Once in a while we'll let him go in a in a room and just let him kind of hang out and and kind of have fun and play together. They're like your typical brothers. They wrestle around, they like to bite at each other. They like to jump on tables, cause a lot of havoc and uh make a mess of everything. They have similar traits but they are two different types of dogs. So it's kind of cool to see their progression through the training. He knows three odors and their derivatives. It's uh cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin. Um and then for the patrol aspect, uh we utilize the dogs for searching and apprehension um and handler protection. This is just continual training. So we just want to make sure that we maintain proficiency with the K9. So when we deploy him on the road, uh that he is trusted and he's accurate when he's doing his job. It's a lot faster-paced than my last dog. I came from a uh K9 Oscar who when we retired him he was approximately 8 and 1/2 years old, had already been trained prior. So this is my first green dog. Uh so it's a newer a very new experience for me and uh very tiring but very rewarding, especially when it all start to come together. It's exciting to see the progress from when you get them. They don't know anything to when they're fully certified that we put all that work and that effort into him and got him to where we need to be. It's just a blast to come out every day, have your partner with you, um and have an a tool that nobody else has uh in the agency. Um not only just to protect the community but to protect me as well when I go out. I I leave the house with my partner every day. Initially I wanted to be a traffic officer or deputy um but uh coming over to Pinal County I saw another aspect where uh we have I-10 and a vast majority of desert where narcotics and stuff were being smuggled through and uh that really caught my attention. So I decided to do a ride-along with the previous K9 sergeant and next thing you know I test for K9 and now it's something I've always wanted to do and stay with the rest of my career.
