On June 28th, 2025, an officer on patrol observed a black sedan accelerating at a high rate of speed and swerving erratically across double yellow lines. The officer initiated a traffic stop after the vehicle nearly struck a curb, leading to a prolonged interaction with a highly distracted driver. Here are the events that occurred. >> [clears throat] >> Hello. Hi, sir. How are you? Good. I'm with the Shrewsbury Police Department. Can I have your license, registration, and insurance? Yes. Where are you coming from tonight? Um coming from a friend's house. Friend's house? >> Yes. Where does your friend live? Uh she lives in Shrewsbury. Okay. Where in Shrewsbury? Uh she lives in Asbury Park. Okay. Where in Asbury Park? Avenue. Okay. Yes, that's her address. How long were you there for? Uh just a little bit. Okay. Yeah. How much were you having to drink over there? Four or seven tops when we were out here. Huh? Not much at all. Not much, okay. Uh the reason we're asking is one, you're going 67 and it's a 35 over here. Two, you're swerving all over the place. Three, when you stopped, I don't know if you realized you're up on the curb. And four, I can smell very strong odor of alcohol coming from your breath. Plus, you're looking all over the place. Now, that's that's why I'm asking that question, all right? Um just based on what I'm seeing, I don't feel comfortable with you driving. So, I run you through some tests. So, I'm going to have you out of the car and see if you're okay to drive. >> Okay. Do not move your head at all. Do you understand? Yes. All right, good. What color is the tip of this pen? Black. Perfect. Ready? Don't move your head at all. Just your eyes. Okay. Good. All right. Try to just stare right at the tip of the pen. Just try not to move your head. Just use your eyes, okay? See? What's our posture? Good. Good. Can I locate her as negative on it. Negative. Good. Same thing. I'm just going to go up, okay? Okay. All right, good. Do you have any Okay. So, what I want you to do is see this line right here? Stand right on that line. I'm going to put your right foot in front of your left. Touch your heel to toe. Touch your heel to toe like this. Arms down by your side. Don't move. Don't begin until I tell you to. Okay. So, put your right foot in front of your left. Touch your heel to toe. Arms down by your side. And then you stand in position while I explain the rest of the test. You know to begin until I tell you to. Ready? Set. When I tell you to begin, you're going to take nine heel to toe steps, counting each one out loud like this. One. Two. Three. All the way up to nine. When you get to nine, you can lift it up on the on the ground. Take a few of those small steps to turn around. And then once again, nine steps back. One. Two. Three. All the way up to nine. When you're walking, look down at your feet. Make sure you count the steps out loud. Walking straight line, heel to toe. And once you begin the test, do not stop until you have completed it. You understand? You can begin. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 All right, keep your eyes open. 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 Good. For this test You're okay? Yes. Good. Relax until I tell you to begin. When I tell you to begin, you're going to pick up a leg of your choosing, either your right or left. You're going to pick it up approximately 6 in off the ground, keeping it parallel to the ground, and both legs straight. It's going to look like this. Then your arms down by your side. Count 1,001 1,002 1,003 and keep going until I tell you to stop. Do you understand? Yes. Okay, give me 1 second. I'll tell you when to begin. You can begin. My tummy Yeah, I'm going to I'm going to redo it. No problem. And you're going to put your arms down by your side. Pick up your leg of your choosing, approximately 6 in off the ground, keeping both legs straight and your raised foot flat to the ground. Looking down at your raised foot, count 1,001 1,002, 1,003, and keep going until I tell you to stop. You understand? Yes. Thank you. Anything else? Good. The driver failed multiple field sobriety tests and later registered a blood alcohol concentration of 0.117% on a breath test. The individual was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and careless driving before being released to a parent.
