They're almost here. Can you hear the sirens? >> Her back was shot. So, she has road rash probably from the bottom of the vehicle. They rolled her to the side and her hips popped. >> She's barely breathing and she's barely breathing and moving. >> So, she's breathing enough? >> Right now, she's not. >> I guess the first car said that a truck took off at a high rate of speed. Maybe she got thrown from the car. >> I don't know, bro. We're going to have to wait to get a statement from her. >> On February 21st, 2024, officers responded to a roadside area after receiving reports of a woman found in severe conditions on the ground. Witnesses said a truck had fled the scene immediately after she was struck. The investigation that followed would determine the crash was not accidental, but the result of a deliberate act tied to a dispute between two women over the same man. >> I was in the EMT >> The medics are on their way. >> What's the somebody already called? >> Yeah, okay. Well, the medics are on their way. Did you guys see this? >> I didn't know. I just ran to >> Lay her flat on her back. Just keep breathing. You're all right. >> I'm holding >> What's her name? >> Carmela. >> Just relax. The medics are on their way. >> They're on their way. Can you hear the Can you hear the ambulance? >> Listen to me. >> Don't move your neck. >> Where did Where did this happen at? Here? Who Who saw it? Was she by herself or what? >> I didn't see anything. I got a girl hit by a car. >> Listen, can you hear the ambulance? >> How old are you? >> That's when I saw you. >> What's her last name? >> Moreno. >> I know. >> Listen, can you hear the sirens? >> How old are you? Do you have any allergies? Are you on any medications? >> Yes or no? >> Yeah, she's breathing. She's uh So, she's in some pain, though. You can run me a What was her name again? Carmela Moreno? She's going to be a victim. >> Don't move. Don't move. Don't move your neck, okay? >> Carmela, you're going to be okay. >> Yeah, I can see that. >> Listen. >> Yeah, they said the caller Somebody said that they took off at a high rate of speed, so either they hit her or next well, she'll know more. >> But, don't move your neck, okay? Hey, listen. Answer my questions. Carmela, answer my questions. Where does it hurt? >> She's on her back. >> Your hips, okay? >> Just relax. Just relax. Don't move. >> But she's still breathing. She's conscious. >> They're almost here. Can you hear the sirens? Can you hear the sirens? >> I don't know, bro. There's I didn't hear I didn't hear anything. I I think that it probably went like that and then it hit her or something, bro, because you can see the tire See the tire marks? She looks familiar, bro, like the one that got hit up on Costello. Was she on foot or was she in the back of the car? >> No, they just called me. I was over there and they just called me. >> Go back. You guys go back. Turn over there. We don't need everybody over here. Stop moving. Just relax. I guess the first car said that a truck took off at a high rate of speed. >> Yeah, but I don't know. >> Maybe he dropped her off. It's a small truck though, look. Maybe she got thrown from the car. I don't know, bro. We're going to have to wait to get a statement from her. >> What's going on? Hey, I see you guys stopped breathing. I don't know if you want me to start CPR or anything. >> We're still trying to figure it out, but it looks like maybe she was run over or hit by a car. >> Was she talking? >> Yeah, she was She was talking but you're right before you showed up, bro. She was She was talking a lot. You guys are good to go, bro. Just hang tight for a little bit. So, what happened? >> I don't know. Uh so, we hit a truck and then she came over here and she just started uh Angelique. She started saying my friend got hit by a car, so I I came cuz I was in the empty so and that's uh >> So, there's nobody here that saw this? >> I don't know. Like I said, when I walked up to you, I asked if you had a med pack. I don't know what happened and then I was trying to give care. That's all I know. >> Was she by herself or what? >> I don't know. I don't know. Just my friend went I was over there trying to pack up my [ __ ] and my friend just over there and said, "And, I need help. Carmie got hit by a car. Carmie got hit by a car." Carmie, Carmela, Carmela. >> Carmela? >> Okay. >> And I just ran. And when I got here, she was slumped over. She was complaining that she couldn't breathe. >> Okay, yeah. Start bagging her. >> And, really, come here, please. >> And help, Carmie got run over. >> Which friend? >> Uh Jacob, he's not here anymore. He left. Once the cop came, he left. She's been with him all day. >> With who? With Jacob? >> Yeah. >> Jacob Martinez, bro. She said that he had been with her all that they were together all day. >> Yeah, but >> But he bailed as soon as we showed up. >> But what I heard was a truck or something. I can't say, I didn't see it. Like I said, I was over there, but I sounded like a truck. It was a loud vehicle. >> No, that the truck that was that left from here was just parked right here. I don't know what it was doing, but it was just parked right here. And then when I walked up, it it started the truck and left. I don't know what it was doing, though. >> What kind of truck was it? >> a smaller truck. I don't know exactly what kind. In the back of the truck, kind of like a like a toolbox, you know what I mean? >> I mean, she's breathing. I asked if she was hit or run over. She couldn't tell me. She complained about a lot of pain in her hips, and she does have some contusions on her back when she turned over, but I tried holding her still and she said but she wouldn't let me. We got to keep that air moving in her. >> So, Jacob Martinez, they're in a truck? >> Well, there's a Jacob Martinez that lives right here, bro. >> This one at this corner house? Yeah. >> She's breathing or not? They lost her. >> So, she's not breathing? Her back >> Shot. Did you see her back? >> No. >> So, she has road rash probably from the bottom of the vehicle that rolled her apart. They rolled her to the side and her hips popped. So, she's breathing or not? >> Right now, she's not. >> Was she breathing, guys? >> All this process down there they got her on the ground and stuff. >> Jacob that lives here? >> Yeah, but so I don't think he'd did anything, but I don't know. I don't know what happened. So, like I said, I heard like a really loud car, and then somebody like heard something making noise. I didn't know if somebody got hit or not. And then And she came over here and said that somebody got hit. I heard her saying somebody got hit by a car. So, I ran over here cuz I was an EMT in med school. So, as I was walking up, the other cop was getting here. So, I ran up and I'm like, "I I know what happened. Do you have a med pack?" He's like, "I don't have a med pack." So, then I went over there and started holding C-spine. And he took off as soon as they got here or what? I think he has warrants, but okay. All right. Well, we got a little bit of a situation out here. I'm cruising through Starlighter in car to see and then I got flagged down by some people. And they said that this girl got hit by a car back here. So, there's really not much out here. I mean, it's just you can see where the tires where they kind of peeled out. She was in too much pain and she was barely breathing. Now that they left, they were going to start working on her now. They got her into the ambulance. There's some peel out marks here like where a truck and they said that a truck took off at a high rate of speed, but I was here pretty quick cuz I was right here at the 81. I didn't see a truck, but you can see where they, you know, they peeled out and they took off. The witnesses that are here Oh, I don't know. I was at the homeless camp. They said someone got hit, so I came over here. I'm going to, you know, came over here to see what happened, you know, help her out. And then another girl, the only one that was here, was like, they called me and said that she got hit by a car, but only lead that we have is that she was with the Jacob Martinez all day. And we came over here and she was on the ground. She said there was a truck that I saw, but she didn't give me a very good, you know, description of the truck. Nobody saw her get hit. She had a bunch of tire burns on the on her back. So, I don't know if they ran her completely over like her abdomen or what. >> Investigators had not yet identified the truck or the person behind the wheel. The only description available came from witnesses who saw a small truck with a toolbox in the back leave the scene at a high rate of speed. The victim was found with tire marks and abrasions across her back along with visible marks to her hips consistent with having been run over. >> They said there's a fight that happened at Jacob's and then that little blue truck came over here. >> Who's driving >> Stephanie Salazar. >> Stephanie Salazar. >> Mid-30s. >> How do you know this? >> Because I heard them fighting over there and that's Jacob's girlfriend. >> Jacob's girlfriend is Stephanie. Carmie is Jacob's ex-girlfriend. Jacob and Carmie were hanging out today. >> And she found out? >> Perhaps. I don't know. >> I don't know, but she's a big old She's out with everybody else. >> That doesn't really matter. >> No, we're just trying to figure out who ran over, you know what I mean? What kind of blue truck was it? >> I don't know. It was >> Is it a bigger one? It's got to be It has to be So, is it the one with a white toolbox in the back? Was it an extended cab? I don't know if I I I couldn't tell if it was an extended >> an extended cab and it's got white striping on it. >> I don't know yet. I don't know. She was still breathing. She was No, she's at the hospital. The ambulance already took her. So, I guess Jacob is dating Stephanie Salazar and apparently that this Carmela or whatever I don't know that I gave you her name. I guess that they were hanging out earlier today and this Stephanie found out and she was pissed or she's saying that it was that Stephanie's probably the one who ran her over. It was like one of those '80s '90s models, bro. And that that's Stephanie Salazar's uncle's truck that she drives around in. >> They're being really suspicious. They're going to Santo Niño to pick up the truck that she dumped it and she's walking. >> Yeah, well, we can't let the truck go. >> I know. It's so suspicious. >> we need to Santo Niño that is it the mobile home park or the or Santo Niño Lane? Or Santo Niño Lane or Santo Niño Trailer Park? >> No, it's just by the Santo Niño Trailer Park. No, by the church, he says. >> So, you talked to her on the phone? >> Yeah, she called me on my phone. Said they got in a fight. They broke my back window. That she left my truck in Santo Niño somewhere and she's walking back to Jacob. >> Well, Jacob's a long ways from where she's trying to go. >> So, that's all we were going to go do is look for her in the truck. >> If you want, yeah, follow follow him to his house and get her phone number and we can ping it. But, he's going to play that game saying that he doesn't know the phone number and he just talked to her. >> Let's go look on Santo Niño Lane in the trailer park. Apparently, she dumped the truck there and we need we need the truck. >> So, what are we going to do with him? You going to cut him? >> No, I mean, do you want to give him a ride to his house? >> Yeah. >> And give him a ride and get the phone number for me? Or we can go give him a ride in a minute. >> Well, we'll go give him a ride then. >> Let me just take the car back and I'll meet you at the house and I'll give you a ride. >> No, we're not going to take we're not going to take that chance. We can give you a ride there and then we'll give you a ride back to your car. So, it doesn't matter whether you find your truck or not. We just need to find Stephanie so we can talk to her. That's the main thing right now. Well, so you know her phone number. >> and search the house. >> We don't want to search your house. We just want the phone number. >> I just gave it the best one I know. >> Well, that's why we're going to go to the house and you said it's in your phone, correct? >> Let him drive or let me just drive down the road Can I park in there and you can >> Cuz she lives with us. The passenger driver so he could be okay. >> So he can drive the car but you're not driving it. You're going with him. >> Am I getting arrested or >> No, did I say you were under arrest? I didn't then I didn't then you're not under arrest. Let's go look on Santolina in the mobile home park. >> Her name is Stephanie Salazar. >> Okay ma'am, I got to my desk. Can you go ahead and tell me what you're going to say? >> Her name is Stephanie Salazar, the girl that ran my daughter over. >> Okay. >> My little MOTHER GOT RAN OVER last night. They were like trying to find out who did it. I told them I would know before the end of the day. >> I was one that talked to you earlier this morning. >> I found them. Her name is Stephanie Salazar. She ran over my daughter because it was mad cuz my daughter was hanging out with her boyfriend. >> Okay, who did you hear this from? >> I heard it from the girl that was with her when my daughter took her last breath. >> Any idea on where I can find Stephanie? >> I don't. I I told you this morning Jacob's house is over there by Walmart. >> All right, ma'am. I thank you for >> Please find her before my public finds her. >> Okay ma'am. Yes, we will we're going to look for her now. Thank you, ma'am. >> All right, bye. >> Bye. What brings you guys in? >> This morning I got a call cuz I was up at her house watching my handicapped brother while they went to Albuquerque and I didn't have service on my phone or anything and then all of a sudden I get a phone call this morning and it was the uncle which is Charles Salazar. That's I guess the truck that my daughter was in and he called and he goes, "Hey, he goes uh I'm sorry to tell you but it's no good news." And I go, "What?" Cuz Stephanie was arrested and I know my daughter has like a probably a warrant or whatever so I thought, "Oh, okay." And she and then he started saying that something about In-N-Out Lane that they jumped her and apparently >> [snorts] >> a girl was I I just lost it then and I don't know. I just hung up on him and everything so I don't know what's going on. And so we're just coming here to see what's going on. And I go, "What time was it?" We don't We didn't I didn't even talk to him. And then I tried calling my daughter and cuz she has a cell phone and it would go straight to voicemail. It just says that she can't accept phone calls and I don't know. I can't get away a hold of her. And then I called Tiana Maria and Jill and they don't have her, so I don't know what's going on. Even if this guy's even telling me the truth, I don't know. >> And you said Charles is her uncle, so not related to you guys? >> No, it's her dad's brother. The last time I talked to her was yesterday and she was with Chuck, her brother-in-law, I mean our uncle, and she was happy. Like she was like, "Hi, Mom." She was like, "I forgot that you were" cuz she had been trying to call my cell phone and I don't have service up there. So she goes, "I I was calling auntie to see if if she knew anything about you, but I forgot that you had told me that you're going to go watch Uncle Robbie." And she was fine. They were going to get down or something or she's going to make something to eat. I just was like, "I'll call you later, Mom. I love you." And that was it. And I go, "Okay, call me later." And she never did. You know, that was last night. I would say about 5:00 or 6:00 in the evening. >> And then the second document I have >> What is this out taken? >> 9:30 2023. So I'm currently looking for her. I need to talk to her. >> [snorts] >> Oh, so she's not in jail then? >> She's not in jail, but I am looking for her. I do need to talk to her. Basically all I can tell you. >> So we can't find out what happened or what happened? >> Like we don't know what's going on. >> I can't say anything. >> Okay. Well, thank you so much. And yeah, if I see her or talk to her, I'll let you know. And if she reaches out >> And it's just easier that way, right? Cuz it's on her terms versus, you know, the officers I have out there. >> Oh, holy You're Stephanie, aren't you? You're >> I'm her mom. >> All right. I'll let me transport Stephanie first and then I'll head that way. We'll go on the passenger side, okay? >> So, you know I'm here, right? I need you to tell me what you saw that night, Nadine. >> I was walking from the camp and from behind Walmart, as I was passing Jacob's house, I heard some crash, boom, bang. You could tell somebody was fighting. And then all of a sudden I heard Jacob yell, "Guys, cut it out. You're You're hitting my car." The banging stopped, that ceased, and then a little bit later, I was already like towards the beginning of the next trailer. >> Okay. >> And when I seen Carmie out of the corner of my eye come out and start walking towards the encampment, and I said, "Oh, there goes my daughter. She's probably going to us, looking for us." As I was walking along, I heard the truck start, and I seen the truck come to the stop sign, and instead of going up towards the top of the road, it started following Carmie. >> Okay. >> I didn't hear nothing for a minute, and then all of a sudden I heard the squealing of tires, and then I I didn't hear nothing no more after that. I heard my daughter yelling for me from the camp. >> Who's your daughter? >> Angelique. And she's all, "Mom, Mom." And I was all, "I'm over here, Ange. I'm at my at my I'm at my mom's." And she was all, "Stay right there." She was all, "Wait for me." I started walking towards the cul-de-sac. Pretty soon there she comes I before I even made it to the cul-de-sac, she there she comes running, but by then I was already seeing the ambulance and cop cars and I was totally freaking out. I ran up to Ange, and I looked at her, and I said, "What the hell is going on?" And she said, "They just ran over Carmie." And I said, "What?" I said, "Stephanie ran over Carmie?" And she's all, "Yeah, I guess. Is that Is that what happened?" I said, "Yeah, she went She followed Carmie down there. I didn't get to see the actual hit or whatever, but I know that she was following Carmie. She had a choice to go up to the top of the road or to follow and that's what she did. And I said, "Yeah, Mom." She said she ran her over. >> A witness who lived near the scene told officers she had heard a loud altercation and crashing sounds coming from the boyfriend's residence earlier that night, followed by him yelling for it to stop because his vehicle was being damaged. She said she later saw the victim walking on foot toward a nearby encampment and shortly after heard a truck start up and turn to follow her instead of continuing down the road. Moments later, she heard the sound of the tires screeching, followed by her own daughter running to find her saying the victim had just been hit. >> You said she called you. Who called you? >> Stephanie. >> What did Stephanie tell you when she called you? >> That she left my truck abandoned by the by Santo Niño and that she was going back Jacob's, that's what she said. >> She didn't tell you that she'd left the area earlier, anything like that? >> say nothing. All she's told me, and I go, "Well, I lent you the truck cuz we were in Santa Fe that day earlier that day." >> Yes, sir. >> Visiting my mother cuz she had just broke her hip, so she was just to we had. So, we were in Santa Fe and then we came back and she needed to go to Walmart to get the hygiene products. >> About what time did you guys get back from Santa Fe? >> I'd say about 6:00, [snorts] 6:30 maybe until I got that call about I don't know what time it was. Maybe in the I don't I don't remember the time, between 9:30 maybe 10:00. >> Can you tell me about what Stephanie was doing over at Jacob's house? >> They're the boyfriend and girlfriend. >> How long have you >> I didn't even know she was going to go over there. She didn't tell me she was going to go over there. >> And what about this Carmela girl? Do you know anything about her? >> I have no clue who the hell she is. >> All right. >> All I know is that when the officer told me that the victim had All I know. >> Did Stephanie ever complain about any issues with her and Jacob or anything like that? >> Not to me. She kept pretty much to herself. >> Okay. >> Cuz like we brought her she's here because you know, it's winter and everything, she's homeless. >> Yeah. >> So, she was staying at Jacob's so >> Okay. >> until I guess she couldn't get along with the mother, apparently is what I understood. So, I we kind of converted the shed into a place to stay. >> Have you had any contact with Stephanie since she's been arrested or since the >> Uh well, no. The mother was here and I kind of convinced her to turn herself in. >> Well, thank you. Is there anything else that you could tell me that might be helpful, Mr. Salazar? >> Just that they were boyfriend and girlfriend. You know, like all couples argue and fight and he leaves, but the other girl I had no clue who she was whether it was Jacob's girl other girlfriend. I don't know, but I talked to her Stephanie's mother. >> Okay. >> And she said that in the past that they both had bought one and she's [snorts] always carried a knife and everything and Stephanie was certain. That's hearsay. That's hearsay. I told her I don't want to really know about it because the only involvement I have is that I gave her permission to go to Walmart. >> According to the truck's owner, the suspect called him shortly after the crash to say she had left his truck abandoned near a nearby trailer park and was walking back to her boyfriend's house. He said this call gave investigators the lead needed to begin searching that area for both the truck and the suspect. Not long after, he told officers he had helped convince her to turn herself in following contact with her mother. >> I need to talk to you about what happened the other night over here on Carl Lake. >> Yeah, I heard. I got two car notes and they called you tomorrow. >> Tell me what happened that night, bro. >> Yeah, well, so I don't know what happened as far as like her getting hit that I didn't witness. Me and a couple friends, I can't remember who they were, we're sitting in front of my shed just talking and then we heard like kind of this revving engine type noise like it was a maybe a truck, didn't know what, saw some lights, we kind of looked at each other and then kind of just ignored it kind of hoping like it was just not what we were thinking and then a few minutes later I hear an engine saying, "Come on, come on. My friend got hit by a car. My friend got hit by a car." So, I heard that and well, we had heard it I don't know if you knew what happened with Casey. So, we had heard it the night before. So, I was just like, "Well, whatever. That's not what's going on here." And then finally, I heard some more noise and I'm like, "Oh, that's what's going on." So, um I went to try and give like first aid medical medical aid cuz I was an EMT in med school. >> I saw that and I commend you for that. Thank you. >> The first I got there was when the guy you'll see it on if you look at the police tape video tapes. As that truck was pulling up the first officer, I was walking up and so I turned to him and I was like, "Hey, do you guys have a med pack? Like I'm an EMT. Let me use it." And he's like, "No, we don't carry med packs or whatever." So, I'm like, "Okay, well, whatever." So, I went up to her and then I just held C-spine um and I talked to her. She just kept saying she was hurt. She was hurt in pain um coughing that she couldn't breathe. >> Okay. Did you hear anything or see anything before that? >> Well, like I told you, the the whole revving engine type thing, but that was it. >> All right. Did you see any vehicles leaving the area? >> No. Um but then a little bit after that, I want to say like maybe 30 minutes after you guys pulled down the tape and all that and you guys were gone. >> So, this was like late, like maybe >> Yeah. >> 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. or something. Um Stephanie herself comes to my tent asking if she could come in and get warm. And I just looked at my friend who was in there. I don't I don't remember like I said, I don't remember the friends I was hanging out with, but I looked at my friend and we just looked at each other like, "What the And tried to play it like cool. Kept talking to her. She's like, "Well, hey, I'll smoke with you or whatever." Then Mama D came up and uh Steph said she was cold. I think Mama D was trying to say cool, too, to try and spend some time there and then get away and call the cops. So, it wasn't like she was leaving right away. And she spent some time there and then she left to get her a blanket. And Stephanie looked at me and she's like, "Well, I'll come smoke later." I'm like, "Well, why?" And she's like, uh "Or no, I'll come smoke later. Um I'm pretty sure she's going to go call the cops on me." And I was like, "Why would she do that?" And she's like, "Well, you heard what happened between me and Carmine." And I was like, "What?" >> So, I'll let you take your shower, bro. I appreciate your time. Thank you for talking to me tonight. Tell me what happened the other night with Carmela. >> I was at the encampment uh right next to Walmart freaking packing up my and Jacob runs up to the encampment area and he's like, "Where's Ange? Where's Ange?" And I'm like, "I'm right here." And he's like, "Come help [clears throat] me. Hurry. Carmie just got hit by a car." And I was like, "What?" So I got up and I start running. My dad runs right behind me cuz he heard what was going on. And while I was running Zay also heard what was going on. He used to be an EMT so he came to help. up to the end of car lane. The blue truck was still parked. I didn't really snap who it was who was in the car or who it was at the moment, but I walked up and I'm like, "Where she at? Where she at?" And Jacob doesn't answer me. I'm like, "Jacob, where the [ __ ] is she at?" And so he's my dad hears her like, you know, like moaning and crying and stuff. So he's like he thought she's over here. So I run to the side to the left side of the tree and she's there on the floor. I walked up to her and I looked down and I seen I just seen her and I was like, "Somebody call a ambulance." And I get up and I start running and at that time the first cop is coming down car lane and turns into star lane. And I'm trying to get his attention. Once she once the blue truck sees the cop she takes off and I run into star lane and I'm like waving him down to come over here and help. He just went over there to help us until the EMTs got there. You know, she was just like she was in distress. Like she was just like moving her arms like Zay's an EMT so he tell he says lay her flat on her back and don't let her move her her neck just in case anything's broken or messed up or anything. So we're trying to keep her calm and she was just like, "I can't breathe. I can't breathe." And she wouldn't stay still for And then I could just hear the ambulance in the distance. And when I heard them get to the top of the road I just I told her I was like, "Sister, I was like, listen. Can you hear the sirens?" I was like they're they're coming for you. I was like, "You're going to be okay, but you need to just calm down." And by that time they got to the bottom of the road. I heard them drive up to the bottom of the road and she just like her eyes went to the back of her head and she stopped breathing right there and that's when the cops got there. >> The woman was arrested and charged with first degree After a jury deadlocked in her trial, she accepted a plea deal and plead guilty to voluntary She was sentenced to six years in prison with two years suspended and after receiving credit for time already served is expected to serve approximately two more years in custody.
