the evening a social worker came back home from work outside 15 police officers from Chicago were getting ready for an attack but they were mistaken about the address hey somebody in the going in somebody going in we just one loud knock they pushed into her apartment yelling and rushing around making everything confusing and scary Anjanette who helps people in the community faced a scary kindness that came too late to stop the embarrassment she had already felt they kept searching even after realizing she was by herself leaving her in handcuffs while they looked through her things back there she cover Anette kept asking for answers or a chance to call someone but the officers just gave her empty promises or ignored her they had searched her home for a person they thought was there but he wasn't yet they didn't seem in a rush to admit they were wrong they were supposed to find a young man but he wasn't anywhere in anette's apartment move that over so we get the fre pH done minute what are you wait oh my God no I have to call somebody this is not right I don't even know what you're doing we explain to you what's going on right now please explain you come in here you kick wrong house but instead of admitting their mistake the officers wasted more time which left Anjanette feeling shocked and upset she insisted on seeing the warrant pushing them to face up to their the wrong place the warrant they had was for someone else and someplace else but they ended up in anette's home even then their apologies felt empty and insincere the harm was already done her home was invaded and her dignity was ignored in a careless act an Janette who had been a social worker for 20 years known for following the law and being caring had to deal with the aftermath of feeling very unsafe there's no gun in this place I'm a social worker I've been a social work for 20 years I follow the law I don't get in trouble for anything I don't do illegal stuff I'm not that person you got the wrong information she was handcuffed again but only for a short time before the officers led by a sergeant who would later be fired for his part in the mistake gave a weak apology and left her with a broken door and a strong feeling that things weren't fair after that night an Janette took the city to court and she won a $2.9 million settlement now discuss a really interesting case of someone who is being punished by our legal system August 15 2022 in Espanola the police were on the lookout for a man named Ricky Martinez they believed he was responsible for some trouble in the area according to the police Ricky was driving a white pickup truck that had some unique stickers on the back they stopped this truck and started giving orders to the person driving it they ask the driver to step out show his hands lift his shirt and eventually kneel on the ground hey let me see you get out put your hands up open the door put your hands up walk back no hey no open let me see your hands walk out walk out walk back let lift up your shirt turn around lift up your shirt and turn around walk back turn around walk back walk walk keep on walking back keep on walking back keep on walking Ricky Martinez at all it was Adam pcho a 17-year-old high school student and the quarterback of his football team not the man the police were searching foram what that's yeah my dad I just got out of school you in school the whole time yeah I live here this is my house that's the same truck same same same truck bro yeah how old are you 17 17 who's this truck registered to this is my this is my dad's your dad's his name is adamko okay who's Lisa Lisa that's my step where's she at that home where uh no uh what's it called that's the let me see see Adam continued to insist he was just a regular student leading an ordinary life with no connection to the crimes being investigated he even suggested showing the officers where his stepmom was to prove his innocence but it seemed like for a while the officers weren't paying attention to what he was saying so your your truck is just a truck we've been looking for yeah so that's so that's I'm saying just hang out for now this been at your house a whole okay okay I said man you're under arrest just have you want to call your mom what do you want to do call your mom call your mom where's your phone at it dropped I think I think it left no it dropped it dropped I think it dropped now okay I'll get not to well I don't know this is it though this is it no no but I don't know if it's like the actual truck they saw jum you know myom for Adam when the police told him he was under arrest amid this chaos Adam also lost his phone making it even more difficult for him to seek help you got nothing on no weapons no I'm going to take off the Handcuff are hi hey uh so I there's cops here at the house and I tried to P into the house and I got pulled over and then I don't knowy bro this is hey so um your son's not in any trouble right now um just being detain detained for right now um so the truck that he's driving matches the description of uh an armed robbery that took [Music] place okay well like I said it just matched the description so uh we're just so he's on he's under arrest but the police the police department wants to talk to him okay he's a Min you will that's that's fine like I said we're just we're just holding them for for Police Department here where is here just outside the house at the intersection of 106 and 76 so it's the same truck oh yeah same well it was a that's a plate that we were given the Turning Point came when the officers finally communicated with Adam's mom she was understandably upset and angry telling the officers that her son was simply on his way home from school hello I'm talking oh sorry ma'am I couldn't hear you so I guess there was a confusion but this was a truck that we were giving out to uh look out for I am Liv you know and you guys have him handcuff he just got at school you're talking about a 4.2 GPA kit understand ma'am but that's the information that we're given you know so that's that's that's why we p over Che your information before yes ma'am uh but that's the information that we were giv your name and I I need your badge number okay Officer Rodriguez and what is your badge number 7 oh 135 now 135 yes ma'am you will be hearing from my attorney this ridiculous that's fine ma'am you literally detained him and put him in handcuff no I understand but at the time we don't know that so that's what we were that's what we were rolling for what are you doing with him now so he's going to get released he's going to go home this is ridiculous you be hearing from my attorney okay that's fine what is your what is your man is this espanol PD or who the hell are you so Espanola PD is the one that received the call and they're the ones that put out the b for the vehicle uh this is State Police this is ridiculous in the end the police admitted that even though the truck looked like the one they were searching for the license plate numbers were different Adam's mom was very angry she talked about how well her son does in school and asked for the officer names and badge numbers she said she would take legal action finally Adam was let go and the officers started to act differently when they understood they made a mistake what's up you're good to go bro yeah yeah no worries she's just freaked out I was no that's not man is that her no that's my n oh okay all right now let's talk about another interesting case and see how things change May 29th 2020 in Springfield officer Ronnie Nelson was patrolling the streets with his partner they spotted Solomon Smith walking alone Ronnie decided to stop him and started asking questions Solomon was just heading home and couldn't understand why the officers were questioning him come here what what I do now huh what I did I don't know what you doing I didn't I'm just walking going home where where's where's Home my place is down the road I'm not bothering nobody okay you got any ID on you I left my ID at home okay well just give me your name man why y'all got to r on me f what harassing nobody I'm just doing my job I'm walk I'm going what's your job I'm walking down the road mind of my business I a't B nobody okay well it's I'm trying to get home it's 12:00 at night and when we see people out that we don't recognize we I'm walking by myself I don't bother nobody okay give her give her give her your name and your uh date of birth Ronnie didn't like seeing people out late at night he thought it was strange and asked Solomon more questions even though Solomon said he was just going home from a friend's house I'm not going to be with this this wor of the devil that's all it is I'm not doing nothing sir okay I'm minding my business I don't buy nobody I'm quiet I stick to myself Mr how do I spell your first name s o l o m o n s o l o m o o n n o n okay I don't know who you are I got to clean okay I don't know who you are I'm so it's 12:00 at night you're out here I'm minding my business though I'm not doing I ain't hear nobody not be no problem I'm I'm I'm minding my business you could not be doing I'm not doing that to nobody I ain't heard nobody I ain't make commit no crime I never said you did why are y'all coming at me like that because I'm not doing nothing it's 12:00 at night and at 12:00 at night most people are at home in bed mind of my B coming from my friend house that's the problem that's why you can't do me right there the conversation turned tense Ronny warned Solomon that he just wanted to identify him to ensure he wasn't involved in anything wrong but things got complicated when the other cop claimed Solomon was giving a fake name accusing him of being someone he wasn't Solomon tried to clear up the misunderstanding saying his name was indeed Solomon Smith not the name the officers thought they heard whether you believe this or not okay you're in the area that's known for uh a lot of drug activity and okay all right so I don't know who you are so I'm going to get out and I'm going identify you and if you're good to go you're going to be on your way and you can go home and do whatever you want to do to arue with yall because it takes to the I got clean Rec I'm not for Jesus Christ back me up okay that's fine don't don't don't do that so uh Mr Smith why did you tell me your last name was Eastman well it I ain't on crime what's his what he didn't give us the right name uh-uh what what's his name his name is uh Solomon Smith okay my name is Solomon Smith yeah but you ain't asked me all that okay you ask me what's my my my name all right turn around turn around put your hands on your back turn around turn around put to the ground hurting his back and handcuffed he kept asking the officers to listen to him apologizing and trying to explain there had been a mistake but his pleas fell on deaf ears you got to work with me no I ain't got to work with you listen I'm not with you I said turn around man y' don't mess with me hey don't don't move now stop now man St get on the ground you heard my back get on the ground bro it turned out the officers had misunderstood Solomon's name from the start instead of admitting their error Ronnie decided to cover up the mistake he falsely reported that Solomon had attempted to assault an officer during the encounter however none of the other officers at the scene supported Ronnie's claim in their statements please let me talk to you sir can I talk to you sir can I talk to you sir please you had your chance to talk will you please let I ain't listen till I talk to you oh still brother you had the chance to talk I'm trying to I'm trying to tell you I'm sorry I'm sorry sir to go this route I'm sorry this lie caused big problems for Ronnie Ronnie got in trouble with the law he was accused of doing bad things to Solomon and was charged with serious crimes like felony official misconduct and misdemeanor battery these are the cases of a police that turned out very differently than anyone expected this shows how things can get worse fast and why
