But when they arrived, the shooter had already absconded. They observed the front door was damaged due to forced entry and made their way into the residence. A pool of blood and bloody footprints led officers from the hallway bathroom to the bedroom. The bedroom door was barricaded by a large dresser. Inside the room, they found a female laying on the bedroom floor, actively bleeding from a gunshot wound in the upper left thigh and right shoulder. Another woman was on the bed with blood covered all over her face with active bleeding near her shin from a gunshot wound. She pointed at the bedroom closet where officers discovered her boyfriend, later identified as Tiverris, who had been shot and was unresponsive. Two children crawled out from under the blankets with wide eyes and shaking. One of them repeatedly stated that he did not want to die and cried that his daddy's dead. His violent history dated back even further. He was involved in another shooting in 2015 and later stabbed another person. The US Marshalss considered him an extreme danger to the community and offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. The suspect was also known to disguise himself by dressing as a woman and had been hiding until he allegedly killed another innocent person during a home invasion just hours earlier. >> We got them both proned down on the floor. He was immediately confronted by 32-year-old Tiveres as he came downstairs to investigate. The suspect then shot and killed Tiveres, who was his girlfriend's cousin. He then shot at his girlfriend and Tiveres's girlfriend, seriously injuring both women. An officer who had combat medical experience, assessed both women on scene, and carried the kids downstairs. The two women and a 5-year-old had also been pistolhipped by the suspect, causing a knot on the front of forehead and a laceration on the top of the 5-year-old's head. Despite going through so much trauma, the kids helped officers with their investigation as they picked up a phone left behind by the suspect and handed it over to the detectives. >> Here's his uh stuff. All right. with him right now. >> 35-year-old Carlton was charged with one count of malice murder, one count of felony murder, three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, firstderee home invasion, three counts of cruelty to children, first degree, three counts of cruelty to children. Third degree two counts of aggravated battery burglary. punishment for any person who exploits, threatens, intimidates, battery, criminal damage to property, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a knife during certain crimes. Interestingly, Colton was acquitted of his earlier double murder charge from 2020 while he was arrested with a murder weapon in his possession.
