where they stab you right here he hit me probably three or four times I don't I don't have to talk to you I'm not I'm not talking to you I'm you I got your chief on the phone right now that's fine that's fine I think I murder what happens to corrupt cops when they find out their bad choices have ruined their careers when police do wrong it breaks our trust in them and Shakes the base of fairness let's discuss the Hidden Side of police corruption looking at how these officers go from being being Heroes to being in big trouble and how their decisions change Everything Chad mardle on 28th July 2023 a taxi driver got a surprise when a man started banging on his window urgently the man was asking for help and told the taxi driver to call the police this man turned out to be Chad McArdle the police chief of Ohio he said he had been attacked by a group of people who stabbed him but when the police came things got even more surprising Chief mcardle's story changed which made the officers confused and worried at first mardle said someone attacked him he talked about the attack in a way that made people suspicious he used hand movements but he acted strangely nice yet mean towards the police he didn't have have any visible injuries even though he said he was stabbed this made it seem like there might be something more going on in the face whated sir three guys me car and P me and they drove me thank you you're the bad in the face dud hey you sing they stab you right here he hit me probably three or four times and then he got me right here you have any idea who it is in so you said you were in a car with them right they pulled me into a car they pulled you into a car here here's what up D I'm a cop I don't know what you guys problem is but okay as the investigation continued mcardle's story changed a lot he admitted to using a stick to protect himself thinking he might have seriously hurt one of the people who attacked him this made the situation more serious it went from being just a call for help to possibly involving assault and someone being seriously hurt or killed they took meity they sort of kick me in the face and like I I grabed a stick and start St so okay but I'm I'm pretty sure I killed one of them you think you killed one of them yeah he like came up kick in the face I was like all right let's go I broke a granch off and to just stab him I don't want dude to be dead but don't around with me dude the police were looking for answers so they went to an alley and the fight supposedly happened there they found a witness named Joe Joe's story was different from mcardle's he said mardle wasn't the victim but the one who started the fight with a homeless person for no reason Joe said mardle kicked and threatened him this information made Joe an important piece of evidence against the police police chief need you come out here what's your name Joey Joey did you hear any commotion going on like a fight or something that's broke out yeah come out of here for me so I can see you I just hiding from you were hiding from him yeah so what did you here I was standing right there mhm you right here okay and he kicked me in the back kicked you yeah did you do anything to him when he kicked you no no no I hit the ground matter of fact my back is screw so when he came up and attacked you did he say anything he said I'm going kill you after looking into it more they didn't find any proof of the stab wounds mardle said he got this made people doubt what he said the only thing they could confirm was that Mard attacked Joe this put the officers in a tough spot because they weren't sure what to do next description of all these people says he stabbed multiple times has absolutely zero stab on them whatsoever all we can PR is it he beat this poor guy up in an alley for no reason but who wants suppress Chargers so 10:15 away Bud all right turn around put your hands behind your back we are going to detain you right now we got a whole another investigation occurring at this point you're have to hold that for right now there's no bathrooms around all right am I being charge something right now you are you are I think I murder at night okay Chad mardle once a respected figure in law enforcement found himself entangled in a web of his own making charged with misdemeanor battery and placed on paid administrative leave but cardal faced the possibility of jail time and a fine Jonathan heni Jonathan heni was stopped by the police for a regular traffic check it should have been simple because his car windows were too dark but instead of staying calm Jonathan got aggressive he tried to show he was important by mentioning he knew people in high positions like the chief of police this made the officers feel like they were wrong to stop him Jonathan's attitude was confrontational he acted like he was better than them and warned them them that he might not be so nice next time what are you doing here come here you go contact say hello was that illegal no yeah no sir uh the reason why we're stopping us because the wi attemp violation I blink my blue lights had you to let you know who I was yes sir well we didn't know with it you know that's not a government tag that is that is a unofficial tag that that tag is not even on file I said yes well we have to catch up the build to run it and everything like that sir so so I won't blank my bull at you next time I'll let you just set back I was just speaking I'm the police chief and Ze well nice to meet you sir mat Matt po worked for me your Chief worked for me sir there's no need to get upset I I'm I'm I'm upset because I spoke to you when I come by and now you're pulling me over sir I've never met you a day in my life I understand that why are you being hostile easy I don't I don't have to talk to you okay I'm not I'm not talking to you the officers were surprised by Jonathan's unfriendly Behavior they were only doing their job by checking on a small problem they wanted to make sure his car wasn't pretending to be a police vehicle but Jonathan's anger made them suspicious it changed the small stop into a stressful moment the officers tried to figure things out by checking the car's registration they found it strange that the record showed a Dodge Ram instead of the car they stopped Jonathan got even more upset he said the officers were bad at their job and didn't want to listen to their explanations even though the officers stayed calm and tried to be professional Jonathan's Behavior made things worse he acted like he couldn't be wrong because of his job yeah what she's about bringing your driver's license that's fine yeah uh first when you ran the the tag came back to like a Dodge Ram so we're just confirming yes sir yes sir we're yes sir yeah we're just you must have run it wrong you must have run it wrong cuz you want to come back to a do we were confirmed it they they let us so so it's still coming back to a Dodge Ram now sir can can I ask why you're so upset is it still coming back to a Dodge Ram now no we got it fixed why you so upset no you didn't fix it did is it still coming back to a Dodge round right now no it came back 9 on5 that's right cuz you run it wrong sir somebody run it wrong either you did or did we're about to get the information I got your chief on the phone right now that's fine that's fine that's fine can you calm down for it please I appreciate your service I appreciate your service I'm just saying I spoke to you guys I didn't have to do that I could have eased on by y'all I appreciate the job y'all out here doing I'm trying to be respectful with you understand that understand I'm not I'm not raising my voice right understand all right let's be respectful the only thing i' done wrong was fol y'all never would have pulled me over if I had flick my blue lights no sir no we were going to pull you I'm not going to lie to you I'm telling you straight up okay but like I said you know there's people out here in personate police officer with blue lights you thr my she throw my license if she is get for me she'll bring it to you sir okay well that's fine I'm just trying I'm trying to talk with you I don't want to talk anymore about it all righty this small problem became a big issue because Jonathan couldn't control his anger and kept trying to scare people with his job instead of showing he was right he acted very unprofessional he was told he did wrong and had to do 6 months of training to learn how to control his anger and make things calm Jennifer Larson and Donald milazo one day in Cook County Amanda decided to record the courthouse while standing on the sidewalk she thought it was just exercising her rights but things got serious quickly Sergeant Jennifer lson and leftenant Donald milazo who have been police officers for over 20 years got involved while Amanda was recording leftenant milazo came up to her he said it was against the law and warned her to stop but Amanda knew she was allowed to record the law says it's okay to film in public places as long as you're not recording private conversations Amanda explained this to the officers but they didn't seem to understand the law correctly masso asked ma'am what are you doing then Amanda told her she just recorded the building milazo supported by lasson said Amanda was breaking the law by filming the courthouse which is a public building even though Amanda tried to explain her right to record the officers didn't listen they kept insisting she'd go into the courthouse for identification and questioning ma'am can I ask what you're doing I'm recording the building why cuz I want to for what purpose I get a supervisor front door pleas hey ma'am you know this is a public building exactly that's why I'm recording it it's also a court facility yep which there is a Judicial law or judicial order that says that you cannot tape this building can I see that order yes come on in we're going to check your IDs too oh no I'm not going in oh yeah no no no we're going to run you too Amanda didn't let them scare her she stayed where she was which caused a standoff they wrongly arrested her saying she was acting suspiciously inside the tension grew larsson's body camera recorded milazo making strange demands about Amanda's camera footage no that's all right we're going to get your name we're going to do a report and everything so come on in um no no yeah you're going to come in now am I being detained yes for what because right now we you are doing something suspicious that's not a reason to detain anybody well it is for D come on it's really not so I'm just going to stay here and continue recording okay you're going to come in and we're going to find out who you are and what you're doing here no you're not okay all right who's got cuffs she does not want to go agreeably Amanda didn't want to give her ID without a good reason which caused more trouble she said she had rights under the Fourth Amendment and wouldn't do what the officers wanted unfairly the officers seemed frustrated they didn't seem to understand the law they were dealing with and they tried to force a to do what they wanted lawyer okay call your lawyer that includes my camera as far as um consent well it's already on you familiar with the Fourth Amendment oh great why do we always get the crazy I don't know do you delete my footage do you want to cooperate or not I'm remaining silent it is only making it worse do you want to give us an ID remain silent don't consent to se we're not going to search it we're asking for an ID what the is going on today I don't know every crazy loon in the building is coming all we're asking an 're ask for do we do report you can go on your way with your camera otherwise I'm going to confiscate the camera and we're going to take it downstairs and print you because you're suspicious I'm remaining silent this is going to be the last chance we're going to take you downstairs then you will be arrested we will fingerprint you and we will run you is this what you want I'm mean it's silent as the case continued Amanda stayed quiet this made the officers more determined to pulled her even though they eventually let her go what happened stayed with her Amanda ended up suing Coupe County because she said they violated her rights she claimed they held her illegally and searched her without reason okay um we're going to probably take her front of the judge okay he's going to hold her in contempt for I think right now he's doing 90 days okay so is that okay with you silent okay you realize you're going to go to Cook County Jail for 90 days silent okay okay now you have an option all you have to do is show us an ID so that we can do a report and we'll let you go on your way I have an option yeah we told you that before right now you're just obstructing obstructing what you're obstructing us from doing our job I'm remaining silent all right cuffer let's get her purse get her stuff I don't consent to searches we don't care anymore okay during the questioning the officers had trouble explaining why they did what they did Larson even admitted she didn't fully understand the law she promised to follow this along with their failure to explain why they held Amanda showed a concerning lack of knowledge about people's rights within law enforcement as she was filming a police officer came up to her his arrival marked the start of an unexpected problem the officer speaking firmly said check your Ida Manda felt like she didn't have to and maybe a little rebellious yes come on in we're going to check your IDs too oh no I'm not going in oh yeah no no no we're going to run you too no that's all right we going to get your name we're going to do a report and everything so come on in Amanda's refusal started a series of cases that ended with her being handcuffed and held by the police this made people wonder about how much power the police should have and what rights people have me a first have her sit right there okay yeah I I'll help you the officer said he did it to keep himself safe which is a reason police often use for what they do but was Amanda saying no to showing her ID really enough to make her seem dangerous what would you do if one of those people said to you what's the difference between between arrest and detain what would your answer be we call Legal Mr Gorman seated to your left no Sheriff has their own legal oh okay their own legal who helps them understand things like the difference between arrest and detain yes gotcha was there a lawful basis to handcuff her yes okay what was that lawful basis officer safety gotcha however when a it was okay to hold someone for filming a not show ID the officers didn't seem sure about the laws they were following one officer even said they didn't know if there was a law saying people had to show ID when police asked this was surprising given their important jobs and many years in law enforcement as a punishment and pay fines okay did you have any reasonable suspicion that she was committing a crime we had reasonable suici to ask her what she was doing and why she was doing it just to get who she was and why you and I agree on that that you had the right to ask her whatever you wanted to ask ask her did you have the right to put her in handcuffs for the security of the officers yes okay what made her a threat her refusing to give any information that was requested of her was she legally obligated to give that information when an officer has asked her for security purposes to give her identity up yes have you ever heard of something called the Terry search or a Terry Frisk I have okay what is that I'm not going to say exactly I don't know the law okay um well let me just ask you this a police officer is allowed to go over to anybody they want demand to CID and if they refuse they get to arrest them is that your testimony or detain them let me say it one more time I'm sorry sure police officer goes over to somebody on the street let's call the person Mr plaintiff Okay police officer goes to Mr plaintiff and says hey let me see your ID and Mr plaintiff says uh no is the officer now allowed to put Mr plaintiff in handcuffs and detain him we object it's a hypothetical calls for speculation yeah um I do believe yes for off off safety they do have the right to then at least then do um a pat down of the person's outer garments for their safety doesn't there have to be reasonable suspicion that the person committed a criminal offense or violated a law is I'm going to I'm I don't know the law exactly if you could go back in time to the day that you arrested her would you still arrest her so you asking me if I can go back in time yeah I don't know how I could do that okay did you understand my question I did and you're asking me to suppose whether or not I can go back in time I can't so you can't tell me if you would still arrest her I can't tell you what would happen on that day if I went back in time no was there any reasonable suspicion that she was committing a crime yes or no we weren't sure what she was doing okay so if you don't know what somebody's doing do you have reasonable suspicion that they're doing anything in particular no but we have a reasonable response to ask what she was doing right agreed you could ask her what she's doing and when she refuses to answer are you now allowed to detain her yes who told you this that you get to detain people who are videoing and refuseed to identify themselves when asked are you familiar with the fourth amendment by the way vaguely what does it say in your own vague terms uh no illegal search and seizure right unless there's probable cause or that's about all I know okay all right good enough he said that's about all I know all right um now there was somebody else who asked you the same question that I just asked you about your familiarity with the Fourth Amendment uh who's in this room right now do you know who that person was my client Miss berquist asked you that didn't she I don't recall she asked you are you familiar with the Fourth Amendment you don't remember that no okay I the lawyer okay call your lawyer that includes my camera as far as um consent well it's already asked are you familiar with the Fourth Amendment oh great why do we always get the crazy I don't know when people act in a way that is not in their best interest how is she acting that was not in her best interest well at any time all she had to do is identify herself we could have done our report now you have an option all you have to do is show us an ID so that we can do a report and we'll let you go on your way and everything could have gone the own and if uh if somebody were to threaten you that unless you comp with their demands they're going to put you in handcuffs would you automatically necessarily comply with their demands yes you would cler speculation he was able to answer so so you would so even if uh even if there's somebody who is acting as a law enforcement officer giving you an unlawful order threatening you with detainment or arrest or 90 days jail if you don't comply with their unlawful demands you would still comply yes all righty is that what you expected her to do to comply yes what lawful basis was there for you to demand her ID identification you're right I we were looking for identification find out why she was there and what she was doing did you hear the question I just asked you I that was my answer what question did I just did you just answer what Justified asking for her ID what lawful basis was there for you to ask for her ID I don't know moreover the incident took a darker turn when it was revealed that Amanda's pictures might have been deleted while in police custody this made people worry that the police might have broken the Fourth Amendment which stops them from searching or taking things from people for no reason also there were talks about Miranda rights did you delete her pictures no who did don't know you don't know who deleted her pictures no by the time you got in front of Judge Peter Feliz they were deleted weren't they as far as I know they were still on there you grabbed her camera away from her outside did you not yes from that point until you were in front of Judge Peter Fel did she ever hold her camera again no okay so you had it the entire time yes didn't judge Peter Feliz talk to you about whether the pictures had been deleted he asked for the the memory thing so he could delete them you just said that he asked you for the memory card because he wanted to delete the pictures is that your testimony yes okay and if he were to testify at some point in time that he absolutely categorically did did not delete those pictures then would you want to change your answer as to whether you or one of your people did I'm going to OB calls for speculation no one had custody of the camera but me okay so you had it you gave it to judge Peter phel yes judge Peter Feliz ultimately gave it back to miss burquest yes okay so if it was deleted from the time she was outside until the time she got it back by judge Peter Feliz it was either deleted by you or by the judge right yes would it have been lawful for you to delete her pictures I don't know but what do you think are you allowed to go over to people's pictures and delete them no without a court order no right that would be a violation of which amendment do you know no I what do you do if somebody says they want to talk to a lawyer and you have them in handcuffs we allow them to call a lawyer do you keep do you keep asking them questions depends on the case oh I got you okay tell me the case in which you would continue to ask questions of somebody in custody after they asked for a lawyer if we're doing an investigation we're going to ask I got you okay do you know which amendment it is that allows people to demand a lawyer do you have any idea no have you ever read anybody the Miranda wres no you've never read anybody their Miranda wrs no have you ever arrested anybody no other than Miss burquest no she's the only person you've ever arrested yes and that was a detainment right but you also said it was an arrest earlier remember no okay well was it an arrest or a detainment we detained her right and and again just to work very clear about this you're making that distinction but you don't know the difference between the two correct then how do you know it was a detainment and not an arrest because we weren't planning on doing any paperwork or any uh charging her with any crimes oh okay so is that the definition of detainment as opposed to arrest we were detaining her for investigation yes gotcha okay and you don't know the Miranda Rights not off hand no all right when you arrest somebody do you have to advise them that they have the right to remain silent yes do you have to advise them that they have the right to an attorney yes do you have to advise them that if they cannot afford an attorney one will be provided to them yes okay now what if somebody says yes I want to talk to an attorney do you get to keep asking them questions or do you have to call a lawyer for them before you want to ask any more questions I don't know you don't know if you're allowed to keep asking questions of somebody in custody after they ask for a lawyer no how long have you been employed under at Cook County Sheriff's 27 years 27 years I imagine you only became a lieutenant recently no what's your rank Sergeant how long have you been a sergeant I have been a sergeant was 10 years it will just be coming up in 9 and a half years how long have you been working for the Cook County uh Sheriff's Office as a law enforcement officer of some sort in any capacity uh 19 years and 10 months what are the Miranda rights our Miranda rights can I I don't have I would have to read them to you from a pre-written okay did you ever tell her that she was going to go to jail for 90 days I believe we informed her the judge could hold her in contempt for up to 90 days but you never told her matter of factly that she's going to go to jail for 90 days if she doesn't give you her ID I don't recall that no well did you or did you not or do you not know I do not recall that is that something that you would do and say no after seeing how Amanda's case was solved let's discuss another eye opener on how cops sometimes struggle with the rules they're meant to follow Stevenson on November 16th 2018 there was a report about a broken down car on the side of the road this kind of situation happens a lot but people never know exactly what will happen Deputy van sloon felt it was his duty to respond like always he didn't know that this call would turn into a memorable case for everyone involved when Deputy van sloon got there he saw something that made him feel uneasy Sheriff Scott Stevenson was sitting in the car looking like he was asleep but not moving van Saloon tried to wake him up by calling calling out to him many times but the sheriff only made sounds that didn't make sense it was a serious situation finally Stevenson opened his eyes but he looked confused and didn't seem like the strong leader everyone knew him to be sir sir pardon crisis pardon sir you need to wake up and talk to me she sine sor St I I don't understand what are you doing you're on the side of the road slumped over what's going on what's that I need to know you're all right right now you don't look all right what's your name St son asked what's happening his words sounding unclear as he tried to understand what was happening around him the deputy who had seen a lot in his job asked gently trying to figure out what had led to this situation even though Stevenson tried to downplay how serious he was feeling his answers were confusing and he avoided talking about it clearly what's going on today oh jeez uh holy what is uh what do you got me you light light it up for I have you light it up because we had a call well first off it's so hits us yeah yeah and second of all someone called said you were sitting on the side of the road slumped over which you were yeah all right what uh what's going on today nothing nothing no the talk changed when Stevenson said he had been drinking alcohol this made the situation more complicated the deputy told the dispatcher what was happening you got to give me a little more than that not not just we don't all just sit down and sleep on the side of the road I I'm sorry have you been drinking yeah yeah yeah okay y yeah bad bad uh okay uh B I'm not driving right but you how did you get here is the question yeah I know I I uh uh bad bad bad Deo where you coming from Midland Midland I'm from Midland when the ambulance arrived it was like a new part of the story started Stevenson realized what this meant showed his badge he hoped this would change what happened next this showed how much he wanted to protect his reputation for what he did no I don't know Hey listen I don't know who you are I'm Midland County Sheriff I I'm [ __ ] good I had a [ __ ] bad day okay I don't I don't need EMS I don't need you it'd be cool if we what what you know but I I don't I do not need EMS I'm I'm I'm know you are right cuz they already have been called you know the drill when police chief Jerry Cannon arrived Stevenson pleaded for understanding he admitted he had a bad day which showed his vulnerability as a humor but he also highlighted the seriousness of his mistake the field sobriety tests that followed was solemn Stevenson struggled to walk steadily and keep his balance a sharp contrast to what people expected from someone in his position the breath Eliza showed Stevenson was drunk making the atmosphere heavy with the truth he begged for mercy hoping to avoid what he knew he was coming his desperation was clear and deeply felt but even though the sheriff tried to help the Lord didn't butch it was a reminder that Stevenson's badge couldn't protect him from facing the consequences 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 yeah can't really do you know mhm nine 10 oh [ __ ] trying to slant here okay ready ready ready when you are you sure yeah I don't know if I want to do right or left fo officers were in a tough spot they had to decide what was right even though it involved one of their colleagues they chose to arrest Stevenson showing their dedication to fairness but it was a hard decision to make y got go let it go I'll take responsibility for this you don't have to to or okay I'm so sorry I am I don't know what that means she got to take you in oh Jesus Christ everybody I mean it's it's on the radio it's sorry they don't it's just the Cap's out of the bag and you know it's not like the old days Jesus Christ I can't go to jail for drunk driving godamn it are you shoting Stevenson admitted guilt to driving while visibly impaired it was an acknowledgement of the mistake that had harmed his career the Court's decision to put him on probation find him and suspend his driver's license was a real consequence of what he did after Sheriff Stevenson's bad decision now discussed the officers caught in bad situations that challenge his careers and his understanding of Duty and accountability as we wrap up these cases about cops making big mistakes it's clear how important it is for police to always do the right thing from Stevenson's bad night to mcardle's wrong choices we see why being honest and fair matters so much what do you think we can do to make sure police always act right share your ideas below let's talk about how to make things better thanks for watching until next time stay informed and engaged
