On April 10, 2022, at approximately 1:33 p.m., law enforcement officers responded to a call for assistance at the Harbor Police Headquarters located at 3380 North Harbor Drive. What began as a routine call escalated into a life-threatening confrontation. Today, we review what happened, how the officers responded, and the status of the investigation. According to official records, a 29-year-old man identified as Eric Jesus Medina drove his vehicle into the parking lot of the Harbor Police Headquarters, used the call box outside the building for assistance, then re-entered his vehicle. As an officer exited the building to make contact, Medina produced a handgun and pointed it at the officer. The officer took cover behind a pillar and broadcast over radio, "He's got a gun. He's got a gun. Go. Go. Go. Move. Get back. Get back. I'm coming after you. >> Get in. So, the response is >> I'm not moving. I got him right here. >> Get those people back on the sidewalk. In response, the officer fired multiple rounds. Then a sergeant and a lieutenant who arrived to assist also fired their service weapons after observing the threat. Medina was immediately rendered medical aid and transported to hospital in critical condition. Investigators recovered the 9mm handgun from the scene, collected forensic evidence, including bullet casings and surveillance footage. It's also reported that rounds fired during the incident likely struck a passing civilian vehicle on North Harbor Drive.
