individuals who have untreated and
mental illness can experience extreme
discomfort emotional unrest pain and
intrusive thoughts
much of the same discomfort and
emotional distress is carried by nearby
family members who are not properly
equipped to help their loved ones
often these family members call on a
mental health professional for help but
are told instead to call the police
police officers are often the first
point of contact a person has when they
enter the mental health system contrary
to popular belief our police officers
are experts with conflict resolution and
de-escalating intense potentially deadly
scenarios without inflicting harm on the
individuals

they handle it with careful expertise

unnoticed
but they are the norm not the exception

this one having a relapse last on her
week or so
and uh
he's been calling me a
thinking on this somebody named Brandon
yeah I need a couple nights ago he just
on the middle of the night to wake him
up and say get up get out of my
grandpa's body Brandon what did you do
with him yeah and he's turned he's going
to talk about he's going to
mess Brandon up and that so I come down
this morning
and uh I was fixing uh some food and uh
he just goes by the front door standing
like this you're not getting out of here

telling Andrew I'm not branded so you're
not getting out here well I got my stuff
down I went out the back door when I
come around I was loads out all into the
truck
still I still got one piece it's an
oxygen machine I was trying to loaded
he'd come out and try to grab me and try
to arrest me back in the house so I got
away from him and just come back here
and I decided to any drug use or
anything like that he smokes marijuana
he does take medicine he's been out of
medicine for some time does he have a
case closer I don't know he was at the
last time your mental health unit was
here
and the last time that he did this it
was kind of back in the spring
and he went down the street and knocked
out somebody's window in the car you
don't even know these people yeah so he
had money I'd save money back from his
and he paid for it and he he decided not
to press charges if he paid the damage
so he paid the damages while he's in the
hospital and he's in the hospital
yeah they gave him a shot and he
referring to the doctors and he missed a
couple of appointments in the past calls
yeah but he's been out of medicine he
doesn't want to cooperate me
cooperate with me when it gets this way
he just doesn't want to talk and just
tells me to get the F away from me and
yeah and and what's his first name can't
do it
now I can walk up on the porch and try
to get that but yeah I'll go talk to him
and uh how do you suppose last name you
know his birthday
1996. you know social
oh man I've got it written down

um does he have any warrants or anything
right now not that I know okay
um so you just want to see him get some
help yeah but I mean not just
so I don't know who thinks I'm Brandon
when I was up on the porch he said get

he did that he went to the doctors
sometimes yeah they took him to written
last time he was up at uh Riverside near
mental health unit is he a veteran
so where's this primary doctor at is it
Riverside I mean is that where he mainly
goes he doesn't have a spot no doctors
yeah he was supposed to go see somebody
in at the end of August and he missed
that where was he supposed to see them
out out there um I don't know I can hear
his name but he ain't gonna let me in
the house all the information yeah

essentially he's saying that it's
progressing like last night he woke up

now he thinks that
