After arrest and before trial, comes jail. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. >> [music] >> I've been here at Parker County for a little over 4 months now. I've worked all over the jail. Down here in booking is one of my favorite assignments to work. You see things [music] no one else gets to see. You get to see a different side of other people. Leave each day hopefully knowing you made a difference in someone's life. What you got, man? Aggravated robbery and auto burglary. Give me your good hand and I'll open it for you. All right, step in here. All right, come in and take a left. All right, go ahead and face the wall. All right, man, you got anything on you that's going to poke or stick me or anything? If I did, I'd tell you. Sorry if I smell like fish. I ate a fish fry tonight. All right, man, I'm going to take the handcuffs off. When I do, I need you to place your hands on the wall till I say otherwise, you understand? Yeah. All right. All right, buddy, you can turn around and go ahead and have a seat. I need you to take your shoes and socks off for me. All right, I'm going to ask you a couple questions. Have you been injured or hospitalized in the last 90 days? No. Do you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse? Yes. Specific drug? Heroin. Opiates in general? Do you think you'll have withdrawals from drugs or alcohol while you're in jail? I might. I mean, I'm on methadone, too, so I don't know if you guys give methadone doses here. All right, we're going to come in here and we're going to do a strip search on you, all right? All right, come in here. Walk on the blue line. With certain charges, we have certain protocols. So, with his charges, [music] he is going through a real quick strip search. He's from Colorado, real compliant, [music] young kid. Probably just made a mistake. Right here. Go ahead, come in and take a left. Go all the way to the back. We got a release from our APD Crime Analysis Department saying that they'd had an auto burglary where a pistol was stolen. And then about an hour later, they had a robbery at a Toot'n Totum just down the street. Our victim [clears throat] actually ended up putting a reward out on Facebook. And so, we were on another call after we were looking for our suspect from the robbery, >> [snorts] >> and somebody came up driving [clears throat] down the street saying, "Hey, your suspect from that robbery is right around the corner." So, we took off, and sure enough, this guy was sitting in the vehicle and this was the reward post made there on Facebook. Here showing the same guy from our our media release. Has the same guy, same shirt. Just a matter of time at that point. We Mirandized him, and he gave us all this information, told us that he had you know, he had burglarized the vehicle, and he had robbed a Toot'n Totum for some money. Just kind of felt like he had to do it. You can't help but feel bad for the guy, but you know, the law's the law. Yeah, you can't rob Toot'n Totums. >> There's always better ways to step up and do what needs to be done. What brings you to jail tonight? I mean, broke into a car behind Lowe's and took took a few things out of there. And then after that, went over to my friend's house for a bit, and then he had a BB gun. And so, I was like, "Well." And then there was a gas station there, too, so I went and ended up robbing the gas station with a BB gun. >> [snorts] >> And so, now I'm here. Got up today, was this something you were planning, or were you just kind of walking by and realized? It's not like I intentionally wanted to do that. I don't know, it just Just happened? Just happened. Don't know why I went and I wouldn't do stuff like that. I don't know. Money's tight right now. I needed to pay my utilities. I was short on rent, too, so I had to get it up, or they were going to turn it off. And I have a 3-year-old and a 3-month-old. We just don't have that much money coming in right now. No one ever said life is easy. Well, when you get backed up into a corner, when you're backed into a corner, there's only one direction to go. Just got to give it time, keep your head up, stay out of places like this. Everything's how you play it out. Hopefully [snorts] this gives you a new perspective on things and can hopefully guide you to the right track and get you where you need to be for your kids, for you, for your fiance. Uh based on your charges, you'll either see a judge or you'll go to arraignment tomorrow morning where they will set your bond. This is the first time I've ever I've had a clean record, so this is the first time I've ever done anything like Chances are with it being a first time, then it's not going to be a huge deal, but I mean, it's not it's not a light thing that you did. They could sentence you to county time or something like that based on the judge. All right. Yes, that sounds good. Okay. He says it's the first time he's come [music] to jail, so hopefully he learns from it and is able to step up and do what he needs to do for his kids and his fiance. It's all up to him now. I've been an officer here [music] at Potter County Detention Center for a little over a year now. Also, I'm a firefighter for Potter County Fire and Rescue. >> [music] >> I just like helping out the community, so doing both of them is an easy way to help them out. We were informed by supervisors that we need to go do a couple shakedowns, which is just random searches of a cell to uh look for anything such as contraband, weapons, drugs, anything extra that they're not supposed to have. See what we can find. Grab your oranges. Grab your All right, let's go. Let's go, let's go, gentlemen. Get down. Oranges and towels. Go get your towel. Line up by the door. Yep, you're good. [music] Get your wristbands. Don't be talking. All right, Lewis, do you want to start over there? I'll start over here and work our way around. We'll get tipped off or they'll let us know when something is going on in the cell that's not supposed to. Here you go, Adamson. Awesome. Yep. Shank. Whoop. That's your paraphernalia. A bunch of different colors and ink and designs and outlays. Uh they Somebody's given them brand new boxers, and they've ripped them apart, and they use these for patterns. They draw them out. They can wet it, which will stain it to the person's skin. So, what did you guys find? We found a staple. Uh-huh. They might be using that for a tattoo. >> be. Yeah. They could, but this is any box. >> Ooh, where did you find that? Where? Where? Put it right back where you found it. >> it right back where you found it. >> That's a game changer right there. >> time. Yep. >> [music] >> Good job, Sanchez. Y'all found it where? I got my hand in my pocket. >> Oh, there it is. The only issue is there's two people's bunks right here. We'll bring everybody back. We'll separate these two and [music] tell them, "Look, You guys got something to tell us. >> Somebody better tell us whose it is, or both of y'all will be charged for this [music] because we found it here. We'll play them against each other. Let's do it. Listen up. When we get back, go to your bunk. Stand beside your bunk. Do not talk. Do not touch anything, and do not move until further instructed. All right. You two gentlemen, come with me. Whose bunk is this? Yours. Go out. Tell this where you were at. Go out this one. Keep going. You were on the top bunk in that in that uh cell, correct? Yes, sir. How long have you been on that top bunk? Since I got here. Okay. So, you're telling me that you know absolutely nothing about this. No, sir. Okay. Do you have any idea where we may have found this? No, sir. I'm here for child support and stuff. Well, that I I got my release date. I'm just No, no, I I understand. I'm with you. All right, man. Just hold tight. Just hold tight, and we'll be back, okay? He says it wasn't his. I tend to believe him. He's in here on a very minor charge. We're going to go in here and talk to him and see what he has to say about this. Yes, sir. I'm not scared of my problems. What do you think I found? I have no idea. Come on, man. I always get all kinds of contraband. Okay. What do you think is going to be the biggest thing that we're really worried about right now that you think we could have found around your bunk? Maybe a razor. Okay. Maybe? [snorts] Maybe. Maybe this razor? Maybe. Okay. Where did it come from? Probably a razor that I shave with. It's been in the dorm first since I've been in there. But I I have traded it in and out. So, you're telling me that you've been taking the razors apart, putting a different razor blade in there, and keeping a sharp one in there. Yeah. What is for what? To cut string. To cut uh handkerchiefs to do my drawings. I love to draw. The handkerchiefs that you're tearing up the boxers for? I buy them. Well, they're not in there no more. Because that's contraband, you know that once you once you alter them, right? Yes, sir. >> So, you know what's going to happen, correct? You're going to be wrote up, and you're going to be put on lockdown. Probably quieter. It is quieter. All right, man. Hey, appreciate you manning up and owning up to it, man. All right, man. Well, you stay safe. I ain't got to do nothing with you. I got I got you. I got you. But you understand this is Yeah, yeah. I mean Okay. All right, hold tight and we'll get you taken care of here in a few minutes. Every once in a while you'll get an honest inmate. Hey did he confess? >> He did. He did. He said it was his. He said he's been changing old razors out for new ones that that razor was in there whenever he moved in there. He would take get new razors, break them apart, change them out and that's why he nobody ever caught it. So >> [music] >> it's a good job. Good catch. Thank you. I guess we'll be writing him up for Yeah. Manufacturing a dangerous weapon, 30 [music] days on lockdown. He'll go before a review board and they'll finish it up in a day or two. >> [music] >> Born and raised [music] here in Fort Worth, Texas. It's great weather, great environment. Been with the Sheriff's Department about 13 years. Sometimes these people are this is their first time in jail. [music] They're scared. They're nervous. As officers working down here, if we can get them what they need to get out of jail, I'd like to be able to help them out. Hey Lieutenant, we have a male inmate back there. He's transgendered and he is transitioning. So we're just going to go ahead and get him his paperwork and go ahead and process him first. Okay. All right. We'll house him with male inmates unless he feels like he's in fear for his safety. Then we would single cell him. So we'll we'll talk to him after we process him and see how he feels about that. We'll go from there. So Michael, why are you here today? Um for theft. What is it? Theft? Theft. >> Yeah. Unfortunately, I was in a Target and um I forgot that I had a purse on me and it just fully slipped my mind. So they unfortunately brought me in here and I asked them, you know, I was like, "I'm going to pay for it." But I guess in dollars. So she doesn't matter. You've been in jail before for anything? I haven't. You haven't? This is your first time? Yeah, first time. We're going to go ahead and take your picture. We'll come check with you the rest of the process and if you have any issues, we'll we'll talk to you. Let us know, okay? Well, everyone here has been so nice so far. So Well, that's good. >> for that. I thought I was going to come into like a riot or something like that. >> No, no, that's not how we do things here. So that's definitely not how it's going to be. That's what we told you that through the process if you have any issues, just let us know though. Well, I appreciate you gentlemen for being very I guess hospitable. Right. Not a problem. Thank you. All right, this is going to be your one-time booking photo. Make sure you get it right. >> Yeah. How do I look? Well, I think you're ready to take the picture now. So Michael, how are you feeling so far being in jail for the first time? I'm feeling a little nervous, but I mean everyone seems to be very nice. Michael, here's your ID card. It's got your picture on it. >> Oh, no. Am I allowed to redo it? No, that's the only one. You only had one chance. >> Oh, no. Okay. Okay, may I ask you a few interview questions? How many times have you been to jail as an adult? I don't know. This is your first time? Have you ever been part of a gang or affiliated with any gang members? No. Do you want to be a trustee while you're here? Do I need to make that decision now? You don't have to right now. You can put in a request later. Okay, I'll do that. All right. Thank you. Michael, you know, your safety here is our priority. I have my concerns just because of Right, my transition. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I started this process, you know, years ago, but this is my first year really getting intense to it where, you know, I'm getting boobs, I'm going through the whole transformation, everything like that. So I'm not worried and I feel like I'm in good hands with you guys. I'm a big girl. I think I can handle myself. Okay, I can handle myself. Thank you. Hey wait, before you close that, you might want to go ask him if he's ever been in a jail in another county. I don't like being lied to. Okay. So Michael, Yes. have you been 100% truthful with us since you came in? About? About your history and being in jail anywhere else other than this jail, criminal history, any kind of those things? Okay, guys. I'm sorry I lied to you guys. I'll tell you the truth. In this jail, I've never been in jail before. I do have other charges in other cities and that part of my life I'm trying to turn around and not I'm just trying to get that part of my life, but I am I do have three more felonies from charges that I do regret so bad in my life. So yes. Well, all those other charges or things you've done, I mean it it all follows you and and and you know, And I thought it would go away after a certain amount of years as well. So Honesty in this place is going to get you farther. Okay, I'm so sorry you guys. Forgive me. Thank you for checking. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt, but just kind of how comfortable he was Right. and how he was going through the process so easy and Right. and kind of smooth. You could tell he's been done this before. Hopefully he doesn't watch this but anything else. >> [music] >> Going to go talk to this lady in one, see what's going on with her. Uh she's acting up. What's wrong with you? What's going on? Sit down for me. >> [music] >> Sit. Just talk to me. Okay. What are you here for? Like me and my sister got in a fight in in April and I spent um two months in jail. You got in a fight so they charged you with what? Assault on a family member and uh interrupting an emergency call or 911 call or whatever. Listen, you get very agitated. I can see that. I'm already in jail illegally. But while you're here, I need you to follow our rules. I need you to relax. I'm supposed to get home today. I need to shower. I need to eat. I'm starving. Like And then there you go. There's your reason. I've been here in Tarrant County jail illegally. There is your reason to relax so we can pull you out and get you out of here. So sit there for a few minutes. You stay calm for about 10 minutes, I'll get somebody to come get you. >> 10 minutes? >> Yes. Can you do that? That means no banging on the door? No banging on the door, no jumping up and down, no sticking your middle fingers up, no saying anything and no none of that. 10 minutes, can you do that? Yes. All right. Deal. Thank you. 10 minutes. Can I look at the clock? No, stay in there. Audrey, have a seat. All right. And stay quiet. Yes, 10 minutes [music] and then we'll come back and check on you and get you processed. Uh Audrey seems to have some anger issues. Sounds like she gets mad at everybody. I think that's why she's in jail right now. She got mad at the officer at the back door [music] also. We'll let her relax a few minutes and then we'll get her processed. Audrey's getting out now. She's going to get processed. Audrey, listen to what the officer tells you, answer her questions and let's get you out through this. Walk slow. You walk fast. I won't wait. You'll take off on me. No sarcastic remarks. Otherwise, you'll end up back in one of those little rooms and your time down there will be hard. Don't push the limits. There you go. That's the idea. We're going to go up to the stop sign and you're going to talk to the medical personnel when they call you up. Just stand there on the wall. >> Oh, what the hell? You think you can do this? This is straight. Where'd they pick you up today? At my house. At your house? Were you drinking? Did you take anything? No, I wasn't. >> Is this the normal Audrey? Sometimes, yeah. Yeah. This is me whenever I don't have new points. No new points. That's going to get you back in that room. Go ahead. I don't trust y'all needles, bro. I got to leave one so I should so I don't have to go through Everybody gets How do I know that the jail with they dirty ass water don't have dirty ass nails? Excuse my language. Audrey, What? didn't you tell me you would be calm and get through this process and comply? >> needles in my skin. They don't want you sticking They're going to do it. Every single person that walks in here does it. That is just a medical question. Everybody that comes in the jail, they get a TB skin test. Audrey is trying on everybody's patience. Seems like she's been doing it since the beginning of the process. Seriously, the water here, the air here is disgusting. How am I am I not supposed to put a needle in my skin? It's jail, bro. It's just I'm here illegally. It's just under your skin. It's not deep. Okay? It'll be okay. Okay? I'll see you on the next floor. She can look that way. I don't know what you mean to me now. Just look that way. Okay? I'll be done before you know it. That's it. You have a seat. And what if you guys messed up my skin? You know what I'm saying? If that's what happens to your skin, it's protein. Okay? Are you okay? Thank you. Audrey, you got a long way to go in this process still. You know that, right? So hopefully you can calm down, chill out and let out that anxiety this way. Number eight. Can I get some Xanax? No. I'm going to let you make a phone call. How do I know the phone call is going to be free? Last time I used it, They're free phones. No. Yes. You're lying to me. I don't lie to you. I got no reason to lie to you. I don't know who you are. >> dab it up? I can't do that. But what I'm going to tell you is you need to relax. Stop asking all these questions to everybody. I ask questions. I'm in prison. You're not in prison. Well, it's basically No, it's not prison. It's jail. Well, they put a needle in my skin. Good luck to you, Audrey. Are you coming down? >> [music] >> No. Can we think our lives together in the No, Audrey. Good night. She may make it through this process today, but wherever she gets housed, you know, we'll see how she gets [music] along with other people. Don't know. Wish you luck. And the doors open up and they leave me outside. I'm going to go [music] home to my family tonight. I've been thinking about my home. I've been thinking about my kids. I don't want to be alone. Give me out. Just give me out. >> [music]
