Wait, y'all. Wait. >> You're a rookie. You're a rookie. You're a rookie. You don't know. You're a rookie. >> Don't shoot. Don't shoot. >> I'm going to shoot your [ __ ] ass. Don't drop the gun. >> I don't have it. Look. Look. Look. Look. I don't have it. >> Shots fired. Shots fired. The guy has a gun over here. >> Seasoned cops can deal with almost any criminal, but every veteran was once a rookie who was molded through dangerous challenges. And sometimes the job throws the worst kind at them. But what happens when freshfaced officers come face to face with the kind of criminals most only hear about in briefing? [Music] >> He just punched me. >> That's why you stop. [Music] Here are several moments when rookie officers have had to face the most hardened of criminals. Starting with a moment when an officer in training went face to face with Edward Pulley, a notorious criminal who turned an otherwise simple traffic stop into a game of life and death. >> Don't reach for anything. >> Whoa, whoa, whoa. >> Don't reach for anything. >> Don't Don't reach for anything. >> Don't reach for anything. >> I got a gun. >> I got a gun. >> I've got a gun. >> I got a gun. Look, she will shoot you in the head. >> We need backers. We need backers. >> Hold your head. >> Did you? >> No. >> We have shots fired. We have shots fired. We need We need backers. >> We need backers. >> On the 13th of August, 2023, a field training officer and an officer in training made an attempt to initiate a traffic stop on a black BMW for not having a license plate. The driver was identified as Edward Pulley, a calm-l lookinging guy who didn't look like he could hurt a flying, but looks, as they say, can be deceiving. Though things started off pretty calmly at first, the rookie officer and her officer in training were about to be reminded of this very harsh truth. >> Oh, you just bought it? >> Okay. You got all the stuff with it, >> you got all the stuff with it? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Can I see it? >> Yep. >> It's not hot or nothing, is it? >> No. >> Okay. I actually bought it off a call through a pulley fel. >> Oh, no kidding. >> Yeah. >> Well, I hope it's in good shape then. Or he didn't just drive the wheels off of it. >> Well, it needs some work. >> 213. >> What's your name? >> Kendall Chapman. >> Kindle. Is that How do you spell that? >> K E N D A L. >> And Chapman. >> K M P A N M A N. >> M. Yes. Okay. >> What's your date, bro? >> August 14th of 91. What's today? The 13th. Tomorrow. How old does that make you? >> Old enough. >> Old enough. >> Yeah. >> What's your social, Kendall? >> Uh, I don't I don't give out my social. I've had it. Uh, people get me for my uh >> You're being honest about your name, though, right? >> Yes, ma'am. >> Okay. >> If you want to roll your windows up now, that's fine. Yep. >> How are y'all doing today? >> Huh? >> How are y'all today? >> Oh, pretty good. >> Although Edward was trying his best to look very calm, there was something about him that was not adding up. The officers could sense it, although they couldn't quite place what it was. >> You got something on you, man? >> Huh? >> You got something on you? >> No. >> Okay. You're uh acting real defensive and real nervous. That's why I'm asking. >> I just went got food and I was trying to go and see. We just wait. I I just went to Bronze and got the pickup. Oh, >> okay. I got you. >> It's just sweat in my eyes from the rain washing it down. >> Okay. What's your middle name? >> Bryce. >> Bryce. >> What would be the one of the addresses that we have for you in Broken Arrow? >> Broken Arrow? No. >> None. >> None. H >> never lived in Broken Arrow. >> Would you ever have given that address or something? >> No. >> Okay. What's the address on your ID? Uh it's uh and it's I just moved from there. It's uh in uh I have a brain fart. Um Texas. Uh hold on. I'm sorry. It's um Army base down there. >> Okay. Which which base? >> Uh it's down there by the border. >> Okay. >> I'm having a brain fart. Uh, >> so, so you gave an address for an army base, but you don't know which base it was or what it was even called. >> Give me a second. It's uh, God dang. Wow. Uh, wow. I'm having a [ __ ] >> Hop back out for me. >> No, just hop out for me. >> Can I get the window? >> I'll get it. I'll get it. I promise I'll get it. Hop out for me. Hey, man. I'm just going to hang on to you for just a second if you'll step right here for me. Don't reach for anything. >> At this point, things were about to take a dramatic turn. Most experienced officers would have had Edward in cuffs the moment they suspected that something was off about him. But the rookie probably didn't know that. An oversight that was going to teach her a bitter life lesson. Oh, don't don't don't reach for anything. >> Don't reach for anything. >> I got a gun. >> I got a gun. >> I got a gun. >> Look, she will shoot you in the head. >> She will shoot you in the head. >> I want to shoot myself. You're a mother. Don't for anything. >> I got a gun. >> I got a gun. >> I got a gun. >> Look, she will shoot you in the head. >> I will shoot myself. >> She will shoot you in the head. >> I will shoot myself. >> I'll pass you. >> Henry 213. We have a suspect down here as a gun. >> Get off me. >> We need backers. We need backers immediately. >> We have shots fired. We have shots fired. We need We need backers. >> We need backers. >> Roll your stomach. >> Roll over. >> Roll over. >> Stop. We need help. >> I will help you. >> Calm down. Yes. >> I saw your gun. >> I'm hitting the foot. >> Go back inside. Go back inside. Go back inside. >> Hey, start a snap. [Music] >> Roll over. Roll over. You okay, Grace? >> Time hit the foot. >> Okay. Roll over. Okay, let's start. Let's start. >> Hang on. No, just put him behind his back and we can start from there. >> He's not let me >> roll up. Get pull that one. There you go. Pull that one. Okay. During the struggle, Edward was able to pull the trigger, striking himself and one of the officers in the process. Fortunately, the officer was able to make a full recovery. Edward was eventually charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm, resisting an officer, driving without a driver's license, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Edward did give the rookie and her officer in training a tough time, but he pald in comparison when placed with Antoine Hill, a hardened criminal who nearly changed Oklahoma officer Andrew Ash's life forever. >> You're a rookie. You're a rookie. You don't know. You're a rookie. >> Please, sir. Please. Please. Please don't do that. Don't shoot. Don't shoot. Don't I'm not >> dropped the gun. I don't have it. Look. Look. The day was the 8th of December, 2021 when Oklahoma City Officer Andrew Ash had reasoned to visit a residential apartment following reports of a disturbance. Officer Andrew at the time was barely 2 years into service. When he arrived at the residence, he was unaware that he would be facing Antoine Hill, a criminal who would prove to be too much for him to handle. >> Can I receive what you have? Okay, put it down on the ground. >> Put your weight. You're rookie. You're a rookie. You're a rookie going off. You're a rookie. Go, go, go. >> Okay, stay right there. For reasons even he couldn't explain, Officer Andrew froze. His instincts failed him and his training slipped through his fingers like water. He knew his life was in danger. But in that moment, fear gripped him tighter than any weapon ever could. And now he was completely at the mercy of Antoine, who stood over him with cold eyes, fully capable of deciding whether Andrew would live or >> Do not move. Stay right there. Just stay over there. >> Please, sir. Please. Please. Please don't do that. >> 73. I got a guy with a gun. I'm not doing anything. Look, I'm not doing Don't shoot. Don't shoot. >> I I'm not I'm not going to shoot your ass. >> Don't shoot. Don't shoot. >> I'm going to shoot your ass. Don't get drop the gun. >> I I don't have it. Look. Look. I don't have it. I don't >> I don't have it. >> Shots fired. Shots fired. The guy has a gun over here. Isabella, >> I'm okay, but I need backup. >> Fortunately, he spared the officer's life and barricaded himself inside the apartment shortly after. He was eventually arrested by a tactical team and charged with possession of a firearm after a felony conviction. Although these suspects were undoubtedly notorious, none of them were as notorious as 22-year-old Devon Spragggins, who decided to use his firearm on a rookie NYPD cop over a bus seat. It was a beautiful but rather uneventful afternoon on Wednesday, April the 5th, 2023 when police officer Anthony Rock and his partner, police officer Brett Boller, were both on patrol duty and were soon flagged down by a frantic bus driver requesting assistance because of a fight on board. Seems like just another call, but what the officers didn't know was that they were walking straight into a nightmare that could change their lives forever. >> Open the door. Open the door. >> He just punched me. That's why you >> I got it. I got it. I got it. >> Immediately, the driver opened the door. Spragggins took off on foot, but it didn't take long for the officers to catch up with him. But as things would play out, they would almost wish they never did. During the struggles, Dragons reached for his firearm and discharged one shot. The officers fired twice, but missed and continued to flee on foot. Officer Ba was transported to the hospital where he was treated. Fortunately, Spragggins was arrested shortly after attempting in the first degree, attempted in the second degree, assault in the first degree, aggravated assault upon a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon in the first degree, and menacing an officer.
