Hi, man. I'm off to Lou. Uh How are you? Please back up. Oh, yeah. Back up. Back up. Back up. Welfare checks are meant to protect and help those in need, but sometimes they take a tragic and dangerous turn, turning the very officers who came to help into unfortunate victims. I do not want to hurt anyone. Please go away. Danny, we Nobody wants to hurt you. Here are several moments when unfortunate welfare checks turned officers into victims. Starting with the moment an officer nearly went up in flames after being sprayed with lighter fluid during a welfare check on a vehicle parked along the roadside. What's going on, Richie? What are you thinking about? What's that? I don't feel good. >> What's that? 44-20 I'm code 301 and 20, he just sprayed me lighter fluid. >> 44-20, he just sprayed me lighter Start fire, he is on fire. Richie, do not drive. On September the 24th, 2025 in Kittitas County, Washington, Detective Hoffman was on routine patrol when he noticed a vehicle parked near the Yakima River Canyon. >> [music] >> Concerned for the driver's safety, he initiated a standard welfare check, never imagining that within moments the encounter would turn into a life or [music] death situation. Hey, I'm Detective Hoffman of the Sheriff's Office. Just want to know if I have a camera going. Just saw you parked here and make sure everything's okay. I yeah, I'm just um It's all right to park here, isn't it? Yeah. I I I was off the road, though. Yeah, no, you're okay. I have honestly come over I haven't been drinking or nothing. I I don't drink alcohol. I'm not here saying you did nothing wrong. I've I've come across people in need of medical attention. I've come across people getting into fights with each other. >> was just resting. Okay. I just want to I was out of gas, and I'm kind of turning around. Would you mind if I grab your name from you? Richie. Richie? Is your legal name Richard? No, it's Richie. It is Richie? Is that with a Y or an IE? IE. Richie, what's your last name? Davis. Now, if you need anything, give us a call. I'm working a little bit later tonight up in this area. All right? I'm just sitting I'm just sitting here. Sometimes we get some characters that roam these roads and like to screw with people, so if that starts happening, give us a call. >> that. No, not you. I I'm afraid someone's going to do it to you. No, I I don't I don't do that. Okay. All right. Well, you don't need any help or nothing like that? No, no. All right, man. Well, be safe, okay? All right. All right. After running his information, the detective [music] uncovered something truly alarming. The driver, 56-year-old Richie Allan Davis, had a revoked license, three active warrants, including DUI and failure to appear, and a history as a convicted felon, [music] most recently for robbery and first-degree reckless burning. Armed with that knowledge, the detective approached him again, but this time, the welfare check was about [music] to turn dangerously volatile. Hey, Richie. Just me again. Hey, do you have any weapons in here at all? No. No? Do you know you have a warrant out of Chelan County? Well, you got a There's a couple other warrants, but they won't take on those, so I'm calling about Chelan County. >> [music] >> Could you do me a favor and step on out of the car for me? What's going on, Richie? What are you thinking about? What's that? I don't feel good. What's going on? What are you feeling? >> [music] >> What's not feeling good right now, Richie? What's that? I don't feel good right What do you mean? How can I help? What's going on, brother? You say you keep saying you don't feel good. I don't know what that means. What doesn't feel good? Is it your your heart, your lungs, your head? Your stomach. Knowing exactly who he was dealing with, the detective remained cautious even as he continued offering help. But Richie had a violent history and there was a chance he was going to stay true [music] to his nature. You talk to me a little bit, Richie? What's that? 44 K 9 code 3 got one of them pointing to spray me with lighter fluid. Richie, you're under arrest. Put your HANDS UP NOW. PUT YOUR HANDS UP, RICHIE. GET ON THE GROUND. Get on the ground. 44 K 9 taser deployed. Start fire. He is on fire. Richie, do not drive. Fire The fire is extinguished. He's in his vehicle. 45 18 assisting with the vehicle Fire extinguished. 10-143. Stay close to me. 44 K 9 [music] we are southbound on 821. Speeds are 35. That was the start of a high-speed chase [music] with Richie doing everything he could to escape the long arm of the law yet again. But this time the story ended differently. His desperate getaway was cut short when he plowed straight into a set of spike strips, bringing the pursuit [music] to a violent halt. Richie, sit up. Hands. SHOW ME YOUR HANDS. HANDS UP. I GOT THIS SIDE. I GOT THIS SIDE. HEY, SOMEONE ELSE take it. I'm too amped up. Okay, just step back. I GOT IT. HANDS UP, DRIVER. HANDS UP. EXIT THE VEHICLE. DO IT NOW. HANDS UP ABOVE YOUR HEAD. IF YOU MAKE ANY SUDDEN MOVES, you will be shot. Do you understand? Keep walking him out. Keep going back, driver. Keep going back. Walk him out. Walk him out in the middle of Keep going this way. Keep going this way. No you can run. Keep going. All right, now back up to us. Back up to us. Stop. Get down on your knees. Lie on your belly. Arms out like an airplane. Put your hands behind your back. Face you right now. Are you injured? Uh we're going to have aid check him out. He literally caught fire. Okay. You want to wait? No, let's transport [music] him to aid. It's not in route. 44 can come. Can we have aid meet us at the mouth of the canyon [music] and we'll transport him out for evaluation. >> In the end, neither Detective Hoffman nor Richie were injured. However, Richie was charged with felony eluding and attempted murder in addition to facing his existing active warrants. Detective Hoffman was fortunate enough to walk away uninjured, but the same couldn't be said for this next officer who found himself fighting for his life during a mental health welfare check. >> How are you? Oh Jesus Christ. All right, BACK UP. BACK UP. SUSPECT DOWN. I NEED MEDICAL, TOO. I think she cut me in the head. Oh, I'm sorry. I think she cut me in the head. >> She cut you in the head? >> Yeah. Okay. On September the 16th, 2024 in Fairfax County, Virginia, an officer was dispatched to a residence on Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston for a welfare check on 33-year-old Sydney Wilson. The officer arrived expecting [music] a routine check and a chance to help, but nothing could have prepared him for what was about to unfold right in front of him. Hi, ma'am. I'm Officer Liu. Uh How are you? Oh Jesus Christ. All right, back up. No. Oh yeah. Back up. Back up. >> OH YEAH. OH YEAH. HEY, MA'AM. I'm Officer Liu. Please back up. Back up. Back up. Back up. 501, bubble. Single one. Fire. What is your location? 322 Apartment 322 11830 Sunrise Sunrise Valley Start medic, please. The suspects Suspects down. [music] I need medical, too. Following the vicious encounter, the officer himself became the one in need of an immediate welfare check and urgent medical attention. A cruel twist he never imagined when he [music] answered the call. Are you okay? I'm just light headed. Are you okay? Are you okay? Okay. Do you have any other injuries? I don't know. Give rescue in here. Okay. Peace. Do you have any injuries on you other than your face? I don't know. I don't think so. Was that the knife he had? Yeah. Okay. I hope you did not cut anywhere. Where did she shoot? Multiple times. Top of torso. I think my shoulder. I might shot in the head. I'm not sure. You good? You hit? I still have a cut somewhere in the head. You good? You okay? No, I just got hit in the head. Do you have an injury to your head? I think she cut me in the head. I'm sorry? I think she cut me in the head. >> She cut you in the head? >> Yeah. Okay. You ready? Yeah. Let me see your first. Uh he's injured. I think I think he's injured. I got a knife. She got a knife. Are you okay? Can you breathe? Yeah, I can breathe. Where are you stabbed? I think it's in the head. In the head? Yeah. Okay. Just the one spot there? I think so. Where did she shoot? One right here and one right here. Top of the Give me two needle darts. You know what the darts are? I need to take care of 10 looking things. In the lower back here. This right back. The neck. This one here, sir. Where at? So, once we move her in Huh? Yeah, I'm good. Okay. Back on the chest? Here you go. Does your hand hurt, too? No. >> No, okay. So, right now we're going to clean up the body. That's a cut coming down your forehead. I'm going to deal with your eyebrow here in a second once I get a little fluid away from that eyeball, all right? We're going to move. Ready? 1 2 3. Okay, put her down now. And stop. I need a bunch of towels right there, if you don't mind. Well, kid, there's a bunch of towels right there. It's clean. Is there anything you want to cut off the body? I'm going to cut that sleeve. In the end, the officer was taken to the hospital where he made a full recovery, but Sydney's reckless actions carried the ultimate cost, [music] claiming her life and turning a welfare check into a tragic, irreversible outcome. Similarly, here's another tragic welfare check that took a turn when the person officers were trying to help suddenly charged at an officer with a weapon, forcing a split-second decision that would end in the loss of life. Danny. I did not want to hurt [music] anyone. Please go away. Danny, we Nobody wants to hurt you. You serious? YOU SERIOUS? LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS. I'M DROPPING DROPPING THE WEAPON. DROP THE KNIFE. ON SEPTEMBER 9TH, 2022 in Ulster County, officers were dispatched to a residence to assist the county mobile mental health crisis team. When they arrived, they were met by a distraught man, 41-year-old Daniel McAlpin, who was armed with a weapon. From the very first moments, tensions were high and the welfare check escalated rapidly into a dangerous confrontation. Danny, right now all we would do is clear the first person out of the way. Let's clear the crosswalk first. Now. Guys. Yeah. Dan. See this crosswalk? Yeah. See this one? Be calm, Dan. Please. Yeah. Danny. Danny. I do not want to hurt anyone. Please go away. Danny, we Nobody wants to hurt you. We just want you to come I don't want to hurt anyone. We're trying to help. Grab it. Danny, we want to build trust with you. I don't know what words to try. Oh, yeah? Let me see your hands. LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS. LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS. DROP IT. DROP THE WEAPON. PUT THE KNIFE DOWN. EVEN AFTER BEING HIT WITH MULTIPLE [music] taser deployments, Daniel kept coming and just when officers thought the situation couldn't get any worse, he did the unthinkable. Drop the knife. Hop on. He's down. He's down. All right, we got him. Hop on. We're safe. Everybody's safe. Hands behind your back. Render aid. Render aid. Get a tourniquet on his arm after we cuff him. He's my patient. Get Get Get back. GET HIM OUT. GET HIM OUT. GET HIM OUT OF THE SCENE. EVENTUALLY, it was determined that Daniel passed away at the scene. [music] Up next is the moment a mental health patient turned on the very people who were trying to help her. You think they won't hurt me? Nobody wants to hurt you, Ms. Jewell. Don't talk to me. Well, unfortunately, that's what we're here for. We're here to help in any way that we can. I'm tired. Why am I what am I doing? I'm not your parent. Take her. GET HER. >> [screaming] >> NO. ALMOST. DON'T SPIT. DON'T BE a Don't spit. Guys, don't be a jerk. On May the 21st, 2024, in Cincinnati, [music] officers were dispatched to a residence after a frantic call from a woman terrified about a missing fiance. She's just been very depressed for about a week now and um, I've been like, I really need you to help me clean the house. Please, please, please. Like, you don't work. I need you to help me clean the house. I work full-time. I need help. And I've had that kind of conversation with them today and they gave me the same [ __ ] out of excuses that they always have and got mad at me for asking them to help. the responsibilities around the house. So, we had that conversation and she um, did the chores and then hurt herself. Okay. Has she hurt herself in the past? Yeah. Um, by what means? I don't know all of them. She cuts her hurt She cuts herself a lot. She's cut herself. Um, she's tried to overdose before. I don't know anything else. Like, overdose on pills? I think so. She was clearly confused and overwhelmed, but the officer [music] still needed a few more details from her if they were going to have any chance of finding Joel. So, she's also been um, one time someone was stalking her and she called me like, "Hey, they're Or they She took out a restraining order and then that person called and lied and then the When you say a, what do you mean by a? Like Like they got But she's Is she originally from Ohio or okay. Cuz she's not She has no records in the system at all. So She has an umlaut over the E, the first E in her name. That might help you. Well, all right. I I mean like why are we just standing here? I'm really freaked out. We're trying We're trying to get a Do you have a picture of her on your phone? >> I have so many. Um besides being by the police, she was >> Doesn't like us. Yeah, she also witnessed when she was 14 um somebody right in front of her by the police. So And that does not count. Traffic violations that are not violent. She did also get those. She's experienced a lot of police brutality in her life. So if we see her, is she going to be violent or does she Yeah. She's not going to attack you. She's just going to want nothing to do with you. She's not going to want you to help her. Does she ever talk about where she go when you're not together? And I called you guys on my way here. Okay. And you said you had a 8-minute ETA to get here or something like that. >> I'm just guessing like that, somewhere around I don't know. I walked in there around 1:45. >> What's right now? It's uh It's just up here, but it's closer to Vine Street. Ma'am. As Margaret stated, Joelle suddenly resurfaced. Unfortunately for the officers, she was anything but calm. What should have been a relief instantly turned tense as she was ready to push the welfare check into something far more sinister. Yes, honey, no. No, it's not. I'd rather I DON'T WANT TO TAKE ME AWAY. COME HERE. YOU THINK THEY'RE MY FRIENDS? WE CALL THEM EVERY TIME YOU in trouble. You think they won't hurt me? Nobody wants to hurt you, Ms. Joelle. Talk to me. Well, unfortunately, that's what we're here for. We're here to help in any way that we can. We're not here to hurt you, okay? You're here to take me away. You betrayed me, and I will remember that. I did not betray you. You were trying to kill yourself. Ms. Jewell, will you talk to Ms. Katherine and my other friend instead of talking to us? Well, she's not a cop, so it's fine. But you got to talk to somebody. Well, we got to figure out what's going on. But we're not going to go away until you talk to us, okay? Okay, this is me talking to you. Why the [ __ ] are you here? Well, because your fiance is worried about you. That's why. Number one, and we have to make sure that you're okay. Okay, I'm fine. I'm here. I'm right here. Go away. Bye. Well, we can't do that because you said that you wanted to you'd rather and you want to hurt yourself. So, we're trying to figure out what we can help to do, where we can go next. And we have two two professionals that would like to talk to you about what you're going through right now. So, why do they need three of you right now? Why do they need three of you for a mental health crisis? Or four. Why do you need four dicks for a mental health crisis? Would you like Will you talk to Ms. Katherine? She's not She's not a police officer. I want to I'm tired of being here. Everybody is mean. All these people think they're doing this for no reason. They all have bullies in their neighborhood because they're all like this. I'm tired. Why the [ __ ] would you do that? I'm not YOUR PARENT. YOU'RE PLAYING with fire. GIVE UP. NO. STOP FIGHTING. It's not worth it. Yes, it is. I don't know why everyone Why the [ __ ] IS THERE ANOTHER? STOP. WHY DO YOU NEED THIS MANY COPS? YOU'RE DOING THIS TO THREATEN ME. WHY ARE THERE FIVE COPS? We do not need this many pigs standing here watching me. AND I'M NOT GOING TO CALM down until they're gone. That may not be what happens. It may be that you go with her if you don't have a choice. No, you guys are just going to send me away no matter what. So, lock me up in the back OF THE POLICE CAR. LET'S GO BECAUSE YOU'RE GOING TO LOCK ME UP. LOCK ME UP. SO, why are you acting like you've never done anything to continue to act like this? No one here is putting pressure on you. No one is trying I'm not stupid. I know how this ends. Because I don't WANT TO GO. I JUST WANTED TO HELP. I HATE YOU. Why would you do this to me? NO, YOU DON'T. NO, YOU DON'T. YOU HATE ME. WHY would you do this to me? Just stop. yelling. Yes, get my The officers were trying everything they could to de-escalate and [music] help her, but her mental state was spiraling out of control. And just when they least expected it, she suddenly turned on them. You can let go. I'M NOT GOING TO RUN AWAY. PIGS. OH. I I almost It don't mean anything. Don't spit. Don't spit. I spit. I know she I know that they don't understand that we don't want to hurt hurt them. Um but But I I see the way you guys handled it. Yeah, it's good. I see the way you guys handled it. I know that you guys didn't do anything wrong. Sure. Morning, ladies. She is four. What is that? I'm not I'm not touching I don't want to be naked. I'm not touching you. I'm not touching you. It's just so hard. Come on. Let's go. Step on the plate. >> I just don't want to be naked. Can you please pull on my shirt, please? Yeah, absolutely. Thank you. In the end, Joel was charged with harassment and disorderly conduct. Just when you thought that you've seen it all, along comes a truly disturbing moment when a welfare check meant to help someone spiraled into a terrible nightmare for everyone involved. >> Brent, Sheriff's office, buddy, you've got to stop this. Please come out with your hands up. >> of him. He's got a knife. HE'S GOT A KNIFE. DROP THE KNIFE! ON DECEMBER THE 14TH, 2022, in Sibley County, Minnesota, the Sheriff's office received a call from worried parents requesting officers to check up on their son, 34-year-old Brent Aslebon. They feared he [music] was suffering from severe paranoid delusions and hoped a simple welfare check could keep him and everyone else safe. I'm with the County Sheriff's office. Hey. Hey, what's up? So, basically, just trying to get somebody else here to try and talk to Brent. Okay. To convince him he doesn't want to talk to law enforcement. Okay. Should I have a I better have rescue come. Maybe just to stand by cuz I think that's a policy. Yeah, probably. And then I'll page you an I'll page you an ambulance. I'll page you an ambulance out of Glencoe, that's where they come from. Yeah, and hopefully they can talk to him and convince him to come in. He He's locked himself in the bedroom. Okay. I will uh There were weapons but we removed them. No weapons? There was, but they're gone now. All right, he might have some in his room, I don't know. Okay, sounds good. Okay, be careful. Bye. Following the call, officers [music] were dispatched to the residence for a mental health welfare check, but nothing could have prepared them for what was about to unfold. Come out with your hands up, okay? Brent Sheriff's office, buddy. You've got to stop this. Please come out with your hands up. There's still flames. We're We're We're here to help, Brent. You've got to stop this. After spending several hours locked in his room and refusing to respond, officers suddenly noticed what appeared to be flames coming from inside. Fearing for his safety, they made the split-second decision [music] to breach the door. But, that was when the situation took a dangerously unpredictable turn. I got zero visibility. It's nothing but smoke in here now. Smoke and fire extinguisher. Hey, throw the water main back now. Tell fire to bring a line up. We just told them. Show me your Do it I'm on contact. SHOW ME YOUR DO IT We're We're We're here to help, Brent. You've got to stop this. David [music] I got zero visibility. It's nothing but smoke in here now. Smoke and fire extinguisher. Hey, throw the water main back now. Tell fire to bring a line up. Here he comes. On the ground. >> Brent, show me your ass. Do it Contact. >> Show me your ass. Do it. SHOW ME YOUR ASS, BUDDY. He's laying He's laying He's laying on Get on him. Get on his back. He's laying He's GOT A KNIFE. DROP THE KNIFE. SHOTS FIRED. SHOW ME YOUR ASS. DO IT. GIVE ME A MINUTE. IT WAS A TRAGIC TURN of events as Aslaben suddenly attacked and slashed an officer with a knife. The deployed tasers failed to stop him, forcing three officers to fire their duty weapons. Officers desperately hoped he would survive, but he drew his last breath at the scene. An investigation was immediately launched and the three [music] officers involved were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Still on unfortunate welfare checks turning officers into victims, [music] here's the case of an officer who responded with the intent to help only for the situation to turn terrifying within seconds. She's breathing? Yes. Why is she foaming up at the mouth? I don't All right, just step back from her. Why does she got flowers and stuff on her? I don't know what they are. I just don't Okay, step back. Don't move. What's she going to do? On November the 14th, 2022, [music] just after midnight, a Milwaukee officer responded to a welfare check for a 75-year-old neighbor living with 31-year-old Israel Webb II, man with no family [music] ties.
