Does your trunk have different legal protections than the rest of your car? Things you need to know. Let's say you're on the side of the road, you've been pulled over, the cop is taking you into custody because you're driving on a revoked license. He can search the whole cab area of your car incident to arrest, but he can't go in the trunk incident to arrest because it wasn't immediately available to you. Now, he's going to call that an inventory later when he's towed your car and he searches the trunk, but the trunks do have particular protection that are different, basically. And you just need to know what they are cuz you don't need to accidentally consent to somebody searching the trunk of your car. You shouldn't consent to them searching the cab of your car, either, but you just need to understand what the protections are under the law and how a cop would get away with doing it. So, play it safe, learn from Dr. Judge. I don't answer questions without a lawyer, I don't consent to searches without a lawyer, and I don't consent to this search.
