You've heard cops say, "This will go easier on you if you cooperate." Here's what they're really saying. So, you've heard me say this many, many times. A police officer might tell you, "This will go easier on you if you just work with us and tell us your side of the story, or I'll help you with the judge, or I'll help you with the district attorney if you just admit your involvement." It's a trick. He's only trying to get you to talk about things that he can't prove without you telling him. And he doesn't have the authority to help you. Now, the police have a lot of sway when they're prosecuting criminal cases. Cops might have good intentions, but here's the law. Only a district attorney in the prosecutor's office has the right to tell you, "We're not going to prosecute you or give you a special deal." The deals come from the prosecutor, not from the police. Therefore, my answer is the same no matter what the question is. It's only seven words. I don't answer questions without a lawyer.
