Hey parents, stop scrolling. And if the police want to question your kid without you in the room, you need to know this. When I was a police officer, I would teach my children, "If a police officer asks you a question, this is how you handle it. Be sure to ask for a lawyer. I don't want the police interviewing my children without my parental consent and without my knowledge. And the only way to really do that is to teach them how to ask for a lawyer." Now, their dad was a lawyer at one point. So, asking for my dad is not the same thing as saying, "I want a lawyer." So, I made sure that my kids understood the difference between asking for dad at school and asking for a lawyer at school. And guess what? They have the constitutional rights that adults have. And if they ask for a lawyer, the cop can't keep questioning them without a lawyer.
