You've just had to shoot someone in self-defense. I'm going to tell you exactly what to say to the 911 operator because the next 60 seconds are crucial. If somebody else is with you, let them call 911 because your 911 tape is going to be played in front of a jury. They're going to twist what you say and twist what your demeanor is. Either you're too calm or you're too excited. If it's you and you're by yourself, all I want you to say is there's been a shooting, here's my address, send the police and an ambulance, and hang up the phone. After the police arrive, say, "I was attacked." or "I shot in self-defense." Show them where the gun is. Don't make any statement on the scene about what happened. You need to say, "I'm going to fully cooperate with you. I intend to make a full statement. I just want to wait until I have my lawyer present."
