When I was a police officer, here's why I would separate you from your passenger. It's a tactic that police use during interrogation to basically get the real story from both sides. And what they're going to do is they're going to pull you out of the car as the driver and ask you several questions like, "Where are you coming from? Where are you headed to? You know, how long were you there?" And you think, "I want to be nice and cordial to this cop so that he ultimately lets me go." So, I'm just going to answer his questions. Yeah, I'm coming from Dallas. Yeah, we stayed there three or four days. And then, he gets your passenger and your passenger says, >> "We went to the border or we went to Tijuana. We hadn't been there long." >> And now, he has reasonable articulable suspicion that you might be trafficking in an illegal substance so that he might want to search your car. If both of you tell him different stories, he knows something's up.
