You need to relax. >> You need to relax right now. Relax. >> What's hurting? >> My knee. >> We're about to watch $144,000 worth of incompetence from a police department that while they have the technology, can't identify the correct suspect and whose cop employees run over other cop employees with police cruisers that are taxpayer funded while drawing a handsome salary for being careless and stupid. And as you've probably already guessed, not $1 of that $144,000 settlement will come out of the pockets of any cop. Roll the action. >> All right. >> What's your name, partner? >> Uh, AJ. >> AJ. >> I can't see you though. My bad. >> No, you're not AJ. You're Jacob. >> My name is AJ. Austin. >> Austin. What? >> Can you please let me keep on your arm? Go. >> I'm not going to ask you again. >> Okay. I know. I'm not doing nothing. Please let me go, though. Please let me go. On a September night, an officer spots a man who looks like a wanted suspect, but it's the wrong guy. When backup arrives, the mixup snowballs into an even bigger mess. Relax. >> What's hurting? >> My knee. >> This is my Can we get medical emergency? >> Am I the only one that ran over? Glad you didn't bring me over. I get ran over by the police. You wouldn't have been laying around like that. Stay around. I was getting attacked by that police, please. On the evening of September 13th, 2024, around 8:06 p.m., a Lacrosse police officer spots a man matching the description of someone named Jacob, a suspect they'd been searching for earlier that day. As the officer approaches him, things start going sideways almost immediately. >> Just looking for somebody. >> Oh, man. >> All right. >> What's your name, partner? >> AJ. >> AJ? >> I can't see at all. My bad. >> No, you're not AJ. You're Jacob. >> No, I'm not Jacob. I'm not Jacob. >> What's Do you have an ID on you? >> No, I don't actually. Nope. Let's walk over here. >> Yesterday >> 96. >> Jacob though is that sounds >> That sounds like something that's made up. This is made up. This is >> Let's walk over here. >> Are you talking Jake? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I'm not him. Carter was your brother. >> Yeah. Let's walk over here. 61 61. >> Walk over here quicks, dude. I don't want I I got to go. Like someone's waiting. >> I got to talk to you right now. >> My friend's waiting on me, though. >> I'm going to ask you to stop. We're going to walk over. >> This is tiring. Okay, whatever. >> 96. You want to hang on me a second, please? >> What the [ __ ] >> You have anything with your name on it? >> No, I don't right now. No, but I'm not Jacob. Jacob is 61, dude. Almost any cop knows me got brown eyes. I have brown eyes. Look, I got brown eyes. >> I got you. Let's walk over. >> They've got all kinds of technology. They got license plate readers. They got laptops in their cruisers. They can pass along a picture and the cop who's looking for the suspect can match the picture with the guy who's out on the street and determine fairly quickly, oh yeah, that's not the guy. >> Here, let me check. >> Okay. All right. I'm going to grab my stuff. I won't. >> Nope. No. We'll just leave it right there. Nobody will touch it. >> No. No. I don't want to do that. >> Stop. Stop. I'm asking you. I have legal right to stop you. >> I believe that you you have a warrant. I believe that you're Jacob. Stop. >> I'm not Jacob. No. No way. Please look. I'm just sitting my bag down. Okay. Oh, please don't ask me. >> Let's walk. Okay. Hey, can I just grab some leg back? Put your hands. Sir, sir. I'm walking with you. Stop. I'm walking. I'm walking. I'm walking with you. I'm asking I'm asking you. >> Man, this is embarrassing. Okay. I promise I'm not Jacob, but can you please let me go? >> Okay. Right now, I'm going to put you >> No. No. Please don't. Put your hands behind. Please let me go. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> I got this in my hand. Please. Please stop. Walk over. I'm walking. Dude, I'm being an adult. Can I walk? I'm not going nowhere. Hey, I'm not going with my stuff's still there. Please don't arrest me, please. There's no reason for it. >> What is your name? >> My name is AJ. Austin. >> Austin. >> Can you please let me Can you please let my arm go? Ow. Ow. >> I'm not going to ask you again. >> Okay, I know. I'm not doing nothing. Please let me go, though. Please let me go. Please let go my arm. I'm not doing nothing wrong to you. >> I need a name. >> Okay, it's Austin. I told you. >> Austin, what's your last name? >> I said, can you please go to trust me? You're bending it. >> I'm going to tell you to I didn't do nothing wrong. >> Stop. Stop. Stop. >> But here's the catch. This man isn't Jacob at all. He's 27-year-old Austin, and it's only a matter of time before the officer finds out in one of the most painful ways possible just how wrong he is. >> I'm not doing nothing. I'm not doing nothing. What am I doing? What am I doing? What am I doing? Put your hands behind your back. >> What am I doing? Put your hands behind your back. >> Stop. Sir. Sir, stop. Sir, please let go. Please let go. Sir, please call me. Sir, please let me please. Please. Please. How? Ow. No. What is your name? >> My name's Austin. >> What's your last name? >> Please get off me. I'm calling the cops. Let me go to the police. I need to go to the >> I am the cops. >> I want to call the cops. >> Please call me. Please. >> 96. What do I do? Stop. I need >> you. I told you. >> Stop. Put your hands behind you. >> Put your hands behind your back. I'm not doing nothing. I know. Stop. Please on your back. Activate. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> I'm going to cook you up. Stop. Please. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> Behind your back. >> I'm not doing this. >> Put your hand behind your back. >> Okay. Please stop. >> I don't have you. I'm not choking. >> Put your other hand behind your back. >> Put your other hand arm. >> Give me your other arm. >> I'm not choking. Put your other hand behind your back. >> Put your other hand. >> Put your other hand, please. Nobody's got you. >> Put your hand. Pull him back. There you go. >> Get your hand >> behind your back. >> Please stop. I can't. I can't. No. Please stop. >> I'm Austin. >> What do I do? >> Behind your back. >> I'm Austin. Please stop doing it. Please. >> Stop resisting, dude. >> Stop. >> I'm trying to I'm trying to breathe. >> I'm not Jacob. I'm not Jacob. I'm not Jacob. >> I'm resisting. >> I'm Austin. >> Put your other hand behind your back. >> For no reason, dude. Put your other hand [ __ ] >> Austin keeps fighting back and a good Samaritan pulls over to help the officer get him into cuffs. At the same time, assisting units are already in route. But one slip up by an officer rushing in is about to change the course of the encounter. >> On your face. >> No. >> Please let me breathe. I'm trying. Please. >> Think about the psychology of a good Samaritan bootlicker. They have no idea why the cop has grabbed another man. A lot of times the cop grabbing the other man, the cop is being the criminal in that situation. Yet, somebody who doesn't know anything about what's going on is going to actually help the criminal in his criminal activity. Subdue the victim. >> Stop. >> Let me breathe, please. >> He's got his arm loose. >> Let go. Please. I have a broken elbow. >> Oh, it's broke. That was broken. >> I got it. >> Please stop. Please right off the train park. >> Please get off me. >> Stop. >> Please, sir. >> I can't breathe. >> Nobody's got >> your face. Just stay right here. >> No. I got other guys. >> I can't breathe. I have a broken elbow. Ah. Please, >> sir. Please stop. Please stop screaming. >> Hey, sir. Can I sit up and let you rest, please? >> No. [Music] Hey, >> the officer was still working to get Austin detained when backup showed up. But in the poor lighting and the awkward angle of the struggle, the responding officer didn't see what was happening on the ground and accidentally drove into the entryway, running over both Austin and the first officer. >> Back up. >> What the [ __ ] Oh [ __ ] >> No. >> Going this way. That's >> I can't. >> I got to >> Hey, don't hurt me. >> You got to get out. >> Am I going to die? >> Stop. >> Stop. Stop. Stop. >> Am I going to die? >> No. Push it. >> You need to relax. >> You need to relax right now. >> I don't want to die. >> Relax. >> What's hurting? >> It's my knee. >> Okay. This is my >> Can we get medical emergency? Am I the only one who got it over? >> Pull your arms behind. >> Put your arms behind your back. >> I got a blank. >> Oh, please help me. Save me. No, don't hurt my leg. I give you nothing. Please, please, please don't kill me. Please don't kill me. >> Oh my god, my leg. My legend. >> If you ask me, the cop got exactly what he deserved. This is poetic justice. Karma visited this cop like that. Don't you wish this happened to all cops? Every time they act with criminal intent, boom, something really painful is gonna happen to you. >> They just ran me over. >> That's a bonus post. >> They call me. >> Can I cuff him? >> Ran me over. >> Well, if you wouldn't have been laying around like that. >> I was being attacked like that. Please help save me. I can't please. The cop who ran him over said, "Well, if you if you wouldn't have been laying around like that, laying around, I was being attacked by your buddy on the ground." You got to be kidding me. >> Please. I'm not going to make it. >> Keep your hands behind. >> Sorry. Okay, I need one. >> You're under arrest. >> This is going to be all my fault, too. >> Oh, please. Oh, am I going to die? [ __ ] >> What's wrong with Adam? >> It hurts. There's no bone coming. >> I'm not Carter or Jacob. >> No, I need someone to do. No, bro. I just got hit by a car thing. A cop. >> Someone stop taking my leg. It hurts bad. >> Pleaseing help me. Why is there not an ambulance here? Please, please help me. Give me water, guys. >> Ah, stop shaking it. Please, please, please. >> Yeah, I don't. >> Oh no, >> guys. Is he okay? Oh my god. Am I going to die? Am I going to die? >> Oh no. >> Where the is on purpose? >> Oh no. >> No, I cannot, sir. >> No. Oh no. >> Ah, my I'm going to die. Am I going to die, guys? Am I going to die? No, >> Thomas. >> Fine. Just >> can I please have some water? I'm not Jake. >> Am I able to stand? >> I can't just do it. I'm going to die. >> Just relax. >> Oh no. >> The first officer has a deep cut to his right knee from the impact while Austin suffers a far more serious injury to his right ankle and shin, leaving the bone exposed. Even through the pain, the first officer pushes on, trying to explain the situation to the backup officers so they can get a handle on what just happened. be on it. Can I have water, please? Ah, stop listening. No. No. Got over my coat. >> No. Ow. I'm not. I'm not gay. >> We both did. >> How bad is it? >> The kid sounds like a character from the Muppets. Am I going to die? Am I going to die? I hope you're okay. Am I going to die? Give me some water. >> My leg. >> I mean, none of this is funny on the kid's part. I love the poetic justice that the cop got inflicted the pain that he was inflicting on somebody else. And because the cops were so incompetent and careless and just outright stupid, there's going to be $144,000 settlement. But again, it doesn't come out of the cops pockets. They don't care. They're not going to correct their actions. >> Like my knees. >> I thought it was Jacob. He's got big >> tried to walk over to identify him. Start fighting with us. >> I need one. I haven't took anything today. >> No, I'm >> I don't want surgery, dude. I was Jake. I'm not Jake. I don't want to die. I don't know what's happened, but I can't feel my But you're going to I'm in a lot of pain. Hey, sir. Thank you for helping Jake. Please be honest. >> Can't feel my hands. >> Hey, Harley. Please be honest. I was digging Jake. No, I don't have my knee right now. Deep breath. Holding your breath. It's going to make the pain worse. I know that sounds ridiculous. Oh my god. I'm going put in jail now. >> I'll go. You >> go to jail. >> Don't try to stand. >> Are you okay? >> You don't know what's going on in here. Make it worse. >> Isn't that crazy? The only person showing human compassion is the kid who is victimized. To the point where while he's hurting while a bone is sticking out of his own leg, he looks over at the cop who attacked him and asks, "Dude, are you okay? >> Supposed to happen, [ __ ] I hope you're okay. I hope you're okay. >> [ __ ] him, but I hope you're okay. >> That's my girlfriend. >> Yeah, that's all. He needs her stuff. He needs her belongings. >> Ow. Why is there an ambulance here? >> What the heck? What day? Officer, you okay? Officer, I'm not Are you okay? Did you get hit or no? >> Did you get hit or no? Did you get >> still concerned about the well-being of the guy who attacked him? >> Over to you, please. You guys stand up. >> What did I do? >> Until we know what's >> I saw a guy. We were looking for Jacob earlier. He was he was standing there messing with the bike. I got out here called out with party. Walked up to him. >> He looks like Jacob. >> So I was like, "Hey, >> what's your name?" He's like, "No, it's AJ. >> I need some water." >> I said, "I need Do you have an ID?" He said, "No." So he starts walking this way. I said, "I need you to walk over to my car." >> Are you okay? >> I'm fine right now. >> Who ran over the car? Sounds like he might have got hit by a car. Check his ankle. It's not the greatest. >> So I thought it was Jacob. Believed it to be Jacob cuz he was on a bike. He had a white shirt on earlier. He was calm enough. So I grabbed him by the arm. We start walking this way. He wants to go back towards the bike. I said, "No, we're not doing that. I need you to come over to my car so I can identify you with warrants on Jacob." He says, "No, my name is Austin." So what's your license? >> I I I got to go. I'm not No, I'm not. >> Oh my god. >> So I put him in a escort hold. We start walking over here. We get in front of my car and he starts pulling away and starts to try to leave. I said, "No, you're not. You're staying." So, I put him in rear compliance, start try to put him in handcuffs. I'm put going in handcuffs. That's when he starts fighting. Starts pulling away. He's like, "I'm not staying. I'm not I'm not Jacob." And then he's So, I grab onto him, decentralize him once. He's able to get up and I decentralize him again. Passer by comes over and starts to help me. So, I'm trying to yell over the radio, get him emergency. Pass by comes. I can hear the sirens coming. He He was helping me try to get him subdued and I hear him. I was like, just let get off of him for a sec. Like, just hold on to him. Another officer is going to come and help. When we get here, we're sitting over here fighting still. He's trying to grab my leg or something. >> And whatever squad car is right here came up and drove over me and this guy. >> You say drove over what? >> Uh, I know for sure the front of my foot got caught possibly under the first wheel and he was the car was dragging us >> beside your leg. What else? >> Nothing right now. Earlier that day, officers reported that Jacob, the suspect they were looking for, was last seen in a white shirt riding a bike, a description that closely resembled Austin's. Now, as they moved to confirm his identity and search through his belongings, officers make an unexpected discovery. >> Officers in right right there. Officer's injured. And then we have a severe injury to the suspect. Severe injury. The suspect is a green or compound green fracture in the >> I just >> I'm just trying to find an ID on this guy. >> Okay. None of this stuff is >> I didn't go through that. It looks like all female belongings in there. >> There's a bunch of needles and in here needles. >> Now this right here becomes fruit of the poisonous tree because they stopped him without verifying that the guy they're stopping is the right guy. >> No mess in here, but he'd mess on him. I guess >> inside Austin's backpack, officers find a small black scale, a broken meth pipe with crystallized residue, some prescription antibiotics, and a loaded needle with meth tucked inside his wallet. But even with all this, Austin insists he is not Jacob and tells one of the officers assisting him in the ambulance his full name. It's here that his chaotic night finally starts to wind down. >> It's the from the black backpack. >> Boss invented. I saw his face. >> Yep. I'm working on it. >> I looked at his face there. >> That is not him. >> 45 to 58. It's not him. This guy was red hair. This guy. >> Yeah, he's lighter bill. >> This guy had red hair and was slender build. >> Austin did have an outstanding warrant against him and was taken into custody from Gunderson Hospital 2 days later on September 15th. Ultimately, Austin was charged with misdemeanor, resisting obstructing an officer, disorderly conduct, possession of drug paraphernalia, and bail jumping. He was soon released on a $1,000 signature bond. On January 3rd, 2025, Austin filed a claim with the city of Lacrosse regarding this accident. And as of August 14th, 2025, the city has approved a settlement of up to $144,000. >> $144,000 from the local tax cattle because the local police department couldn't verify that the guy that they were stopping was the guy who actually had the warrant.
