[screaming] >> This video proves once again that there's no real avenue or appetite for police accountability and no government official will ever be held accountable. You can never expect criminals to hold other criminals accountable and cops lie but cameras don't. You don't see him in this frame but this is Josh Tyler being pinned and pummeled by the Kentucky State Police. And even though the cops know they're being recorded right now by this dashcam, they're going to converge, conspire and lie against Josh Tyler and neither the government nor Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear want to do a damn thing about it. Let's take this video from the top and make some comments along the way. >> From cries for help from officers to a plea for Governor Andy Beshear to intervene, we are following through the series of concerns surrounding Kentucky State Police. You're watching Wave News at 6. I'm Myra Ansari. >> Jose Sauceda. What would you do when you believe every avenue for accountability has failed? That's the question one Kentucky mother says she's been asking since her son's arrest back in 2021. >> And she's turning to us. Wave News Troubleshooter Natalia Martinez is following up after the release [music] of the Grey God series on Kentucky State Police looking to get answers. >> This mother says letters to Governor Andy Beshear have gone unanswered. She is scared for her son in prison and is scared for the public after her son's experience. >> Locked away in a prison cell hours from home, Josh Tyler penned a letter, a desperate plea. He writes, "I have never been so terrified in my whole life. Screaming for help from the ones I should have been able to count on with my life for help. Please look into this and help me find justice. >> And why did he write that? >> A cry for help. A cry for help. >> That letter was addressed to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who's in charge of Kentucky State Police. Kim's reached out to him, too, without a response. >> And it's going to take him to do anything, but he's not. He's ignoring the whole situation. >> February 6th, 2021, Hardin County, Kentucky. Josh leads police on a chase, something he admits was wrong and is paying for. He wrote Beshear, "The decisions I made that night were not the right decisions. They were extremely selfish and allowed fear and addiction drive my thought process." "What happened to me once I stepped out of the car with my hands in the air, fully submissive, was criminal." This is what Josh is referring to. >> Now, what you will notice, no KSP official in this video has any body cam. All they had was this dash cam. They tried to suppress it, conspired and lied against Josh to saying that he pulled a knife on him, and then the state attorney's office let the statute of limitations run out on this case. >> And this KSP Trooper Adam Sandidge slams his head into the concrete four times. It was video Josh's parents claim KSP told them didn't exist until it was too late for them to sue. >> Imagine my surprise when I heard the Kentucky State Police lied about the existence of an incriminating video. >> When Joshua was first locked up, he was telling me, "Mom, find the video. Find the video." And I'm like, "Josh, I'm trying." Cuz every time I would call KSP, they were like, "Ms. there is no video." >> Yeah, and I'm sure that everybody believed KSP over Josh. Oh, Josh is obviously lying if KSP says he pulled a knife on him and that's why they treated him like that, then you know KSP's telling the truth. >> was convicted for the chase. Kim wants her son moved to a lesser security prison. She also hopes he'll be paroled soon, but those things are hindered by his pre-sentence investigation or PSI report because Kim was told it states Josh assaulted the officer and pulled a knife on them. Josh says he never did that and points to the video as proof. >> This is why you always, always want to record the police. Even if this isn't happening to you, it probably will one day and you'll want somebody to be on the scene recording what the cops are doing to you. This is the insurance policy we always talk about. Cops will lie, cops are lying right here, cameras never will. >> A pocket knife falls from his pants as he's getting out with his hands up. The video shows the moment officers notice it after he was in handcuffs being dragged away. >> I'm so grateful because everybody gets to see the truth now. >> KSP deemed this as excessive force, but this past February the US Attorney's Office let the statute of limitations run out without charging Sandidge. >> Gosh, I wonder who he was covering for. Who does he work for? The police and the police unions or the public? >> The FBI was investigating. They were adamant about it. Um, the FBI agent that was on my son's case was one of the kindest people I've ever met >> [clears throat] >> and he was very upset that they closed the case cuz they did all this work, him and his partner Christian into this and they just shot it like it's nothing. Like just sweeping it under the rug. >> The US Attorney for the Western District told us they've prosecuted three KSP troopers for civil rights violations, and that the federal system is not designed to take every case. Nationwide since 2025, data shows signed to take >> What does it say? Our office is prosecuting three current and former Kentucky State Troopers for violating civil rights of detainees in multiple incidents. It is my hope that our current prosecution sends a powerful message to those that abuse the badge, and that it will start to deter future incidents of police misconduct. Federal courts are not the only forum to address allegations of police abuse, and the federal system is not designed to take every case. >> take every case. Nationwide since 2025, data shows 70% of civil rights prosecutors have either left, been fired, or resigned from the US Attorney's Office. Kim's hopes for accountability dissipated when the clock ran out. >> I feel like it's a crock, you know? How dare you? How dare you? Was that the right thing to do? Um, probably not. >> Sandidge was suspended for 10 days for excessive force. He is still a KSP trooper. That's something Kim wants the governor to address a >> Of course he's still a trooper, because why wouldn't you want him on the force? He's already abused this guy. He's probably abused multiple people in the past. Why wouldn't you want to unleash him on more members of the public in the future? It just makes sense. It's our business model. >> along with multiple allegations from her and others in the Greasy God series who say KSP lied to them about the existence of video. >> What do you have to say to Governor Beshear? >> I'll say, let's respond. Hey Governor, let's do something about this. This is what's going on in your state. >> governor responded to the one question I had the chance to ask at an unrelated press conference I attended in person since his spokesperson ignored our previous requests for interviews. >> What changes are you willing to make to regain the trust of these families? >> I do have confidence in this commissioner, in this state police. >> He also spoke directly to those affected. >> But those who feel like they've been wronged, we can always take a look at those cases. >> Those words don't mean much to Kim or Josh who say their messages to Beshear went unanswered. >> Look at this guy's face, brought to you by Kentucky State Troopers. Signed, sealed, pummeled, and delivered. >> What happens next? >> I don't know what happens next. I know I'm not giving up. I'm going to fight, keep fighting, keep fighting, keep fighting until they hear us. >> The US [snorts] Attorney's full statement is online. We have reached out to the parole board to ask if they've watched Josh's video and if they would review what's in that PSI report. As for the governor, his spokesperson did reply to my third request for an interview only to say he has no availability. They offered a chance to submit our questions in writing. We've declined as we do whenever we are asked to submit questions ahead of time, especially to government officials. We will keep trying to get answers. >> Good for her. We've already seen this so many times, this abusive treatment by cops and then the willingness to cover it up even when there's video camera evidence. And then when it comes out, they continue to deny, they pretend to conduct an internal investigation, and then they protect the abusers unleashing them again into the public.
