Saturday, May 16th, 2026, at around 2:25 p.m. officers with the Lady [music] Lake Police Department were called to a Five Below parking lot for a dog locked inside a car. It was over [music] 92° outside. The windows were barely cracked, and there was a puppy inside. Well, watch what happened when officers found it. puppy. >> Yeah, he's dying in there, man. >> It's pretty hot in the car. >> It's panting pretty hard. >> Yeah. >> Got your leash? >> Yeah, I got a leash. >> [ __ ] a big leash for his poor little dog. >> It's a horse lead. >> Nice. >> My days back in. >> You're skinnier than me. You think you can reach in and hit the door unlock? You want >> a water bottle for him? >> Uh, potentially. Hang on. >> If you got one handy. Yes, ma'am. Thank you. Look at that. Good Samaritans right there, man. Teamwork make the dream work. >> Yeah, I got a magic key right here. >> We can reach in and get the unlock. >> Oh, yeah. >> I don't want to bust the window if I don't have to. >> Yeah, exactly. >> Come up. We're going to get you out in a second, buddy. with my pen. It's just not long enough that we hit the unlock with my pen. >> Look at that. We got the our unlock kit. >> That's the baton. >> See how hot the load is. >> Now you didn't unlock it. >> I did right here. >> Okay. This one don't want to open. >> Oh, it's hot in here. Come on. Come on, boys. Come on. Come on, Wilbur. Come on. >> Yeah. drink. Give her some water. >> A >> Come on. Who don't like dogs? Come on. Wow. What a scumbag owner, man. This is crazy. This is crazy. Yeah, even if you do crack the windows. Yeah, there's some airflow, but it's super hot outside and that car is going to turn into an oven. Like, what? You don't even got the AC on? Nothing. Like, no cool air. It's just hot air in there. Like, dog is getting baked, man. Oh, look at that. Hey, this is Alterero with Lake County Animal Enforcement. >> Hey, how's it going? >> Hey, what's going on? >> All right, we're out with a uh we're out with a dog in a car at Five Below in our city. We got the dog out. Uh the dog was definitely in distress, overheated, stuff like that in the back seat. It's a little puppy. The owner just came out now. Uh my intention is to arrest her. >> See? >> Oh, okay. So, if you're going to arrest her and that's like, you know, that's your route. She has nobody in her current location or house to come pick up the dog and and take it or next thing. If there's none of that, then we'll we can come out and grab it. >> Yeah. I I would give her an MTA, but she's on probation, so I can't. >> We might just have to go grab the dog and see where the other is. So, if you guys are for sure taking her and she has nobody nobody there, then we're glad to take the dog. >> Say she's at a shopping center right now. So, there's no neighbor. >> Oh, gotcha. Yeah. Anybody who who's next to can come get it, they can come get it. Yes, sir. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> I think she's thirsty. >> Yeah. >> Here I go, dear. >> This your dog. Let her cool off a little bit. Come on. Come on, girl. Emma, over here. Come on. >> Yeah, she's warm, >> man. She like, man, y'all trying to put me back in that car, man. It probably going to be hot like the last one, man. >> Yeah, it was pretty warm in there. >> Yeah. >> I got you. Yeah, she looks healthy. >> Okay. >> I don't know. It's because you got to have certain criteria for that. We didn't get a temperature reading inside the car. But the dog's ears, if you see that, she just got done working the dog out. I think it's running around. She went in for a little bit and then came out. I think we were here for maybe 5 10 minutes. Her ears were really hot. She's panting. She's a puppy. So, believe it all. And gave us a bottle of water. You drank that entire bottle, right? >> Yeah. >> I can't give a notice to appear because she's on probation. You don't have to take it too. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Only because she's on probation. Otherwise, I'll just issue a notice to appear. >> Hey guys, now you're fine, bro. Yeah, of course. Of course, man. >> Let's see if we can get somebody to she can get somebody to come get the dog cuz acco said they would prefer that. Do you have somebody that can come and get here? >> Huh? >> Down 25 >> in Maring County. >> Yeah. >> You don't have anybody that can come in here? >> Not even a neighbor? >> No, I don't have a neighbor. >> All right, turn around. I'm going to arrest you for animal cruelty. >> You want to sit in that car park for as long as that dog was? >> Windows are down. >> Their windows are not down. They're cracked that much. >> Okay, hang on a second. >> What a piece of crap. Why would you respond like that? I would much rather hear her say like, you know, not you're you're right. It's my It's my bad. You know, at least admitting like, you know, that it's hot, man. It's hot. What the heck? They said it was 90 something in there. How's the animal cruelty? What? You ain't even put the AC on or nothing. You want to sit in that car for as long as that dog was? >> Windows are down. >> Windows are not down. They're cracked that much. >> Okay. Hang on a second. Let me go and see >> now. You can get something. >> You can call after this. I got you. >> What a piece of junk. piece of garbage. >> Went to voicemail. >> Already got it on cuz I had the dog back there. >> That's all the property she got. Just going to check the car. >> Yep. >> Ask her if she's got anything else in the car needs to go with it. >> Do you have anything in the car needs to go with you to the jail? Keys to the car. >> Anything in the car? >> Check this pocket. >> This one? >> Yeah. >> Is there another one? Look up. It's >> my answer. >> Yeah, it's in his other pocket. I can't reach you. >> Yeah. Let me see. Don't go on the other side. >> Hello, this is Officer Tisdale with the Lady Lake Police Department. >> Yes. >> My daughter? >> Yes. I'll let you speak to her briefly. >> Okay. What's happening? >> Apparently, I'm going to jail for animal cruelty. >> That's what he's saying. And this officer over here being so I don't know. >> Uh yep. Yep. Yep. Click. Let's Yeah. We're done with this. Your dog could go to Your dog could go to uh to the pound or whatever. Your dog could go to Yeah. Somebody No, no, no, no, no. We're not going to be doing all of that. Can you come pick up the dog or not? You can't blame other people for your poor actions. No, now this officer is being a No, cuz you're saying it wrong. Apparently, I'm being No, you are. You are. You are. You had that dog suffering in there. >> Um, anyway, you can come pick up uh Luna. All right. Where's your car? >> It's here. They got my keys and all. >> Can you wait till I get there? I'm going have to help you. >> Yeah, the car's legally parked. I mean, we have >> the last time she ate. >> We can have somebody stand by briefly, but she's going to be transported to the lake. >> The thing is that's a metal box still hot. >> It's hot. It's really hot. >> You want your purse to go with you or leave the purse in the car? >> Mom's supposed to be coming from to come get her. >> Coming to get the dog. >> That's all I know of. Okay. >> Y'all can wait for her mom with the dog. I'm going to go take her. >> All right. What ACO said? >> Uh ACO said if you can't get somebody to come get her, they'll come get the dog. >> Well, what did they say about this? >> I wasn't asking them whether I could arrest them or not. >> Yeah, cuz I know there's certain criteria that had to be met. >> It's hot enough. And it's hot enough for >> Yeah. >> And the dog was panting heavily. >> Yeah. Ears were on fire. >> Yeah. And especially a puppy. >> They can't cool themselves anywhere. >> No. >> All right. I'm going to contact a complainant. See if I can't get a uh >> Yeah, they're requesting a 45 without coming. >> So, I'm going to get their information. >> Hi, Patty. This is Officer Burns with Lady Lake Police. Can I get your information for this call with the the dog in the car in front of Five Below? >> All right. Um, how long before you called was the dog in the car? >> Um, it wasn't very long at all that I called, but my grandson said that when we went in the store, he seen the dog in the car. And about how long do you think you were in the store? >> I was in the store for I don't know, at least 30 minutes. >> No. Are you sure you seen the dog in there before that? He said he did see the car there before we got there. >> Okay. >> When we got back. So >> So you were here for a half hour before you called. So you you came here. Your your grandson says the the car was here. Obviously the dog would have been inside the car. Um when you came out when you came out, what brought your attention to the car? I heard a noise, like a little thump, and then I looked over and I seen the dog was in the car. >> Okay. >> And I was like, "Oh no." I mean, I got six dogs with my owner. I'm like, "Oh my god, it's too hot for that." >> You know, it's like 92 degrees out. It could be drove 10 in from there. >> It was warmer than that. Was the dog panting or did it look like it was in distress? >> I mean, it looked to be panting, but it wasn't crying or anything. It was just looking at me, panting, >> like, "Please open the door." >> Yeah, pretty much. Okay. Um, like I said, I'm going to use you as a witness cuz we just we did arrest the person when they came out of the store cuz we got the dog out of the car. >> Okay. >> So, >> yeah, I know I said I watched, but I want to be right there because I don't want to have a converation with the person. You know, sometimes people are crazy. You know what I mean? So, >> right. So, the amount of time that you were here and then the time that we were here when she came out, we went ahead and arrested her cuz that is animal cruelty, animal neglect, whatever you want to call it. Um, normally I would just write her a citation for it and we would be done with it, but I can't because she's on probation. Because she's on probation, I have to book her into the county jail. But I'm I'm just letting you know why she's actually physically in the back of my police car. You know, let the courts deal with it. But like you said, it's too hot today and it it it it's dangerous for the dog, especially a small puppy like that. >> And I don't leave them outside when they go out to go to the bathroom. I don't leave them out any longer than 5 minutes because it's just too hot. >> Yeah, we're looking at 45 minutes inside that hot car, >> right? I'm not positive about it being there. When I first got there, though, other than my grandson saying that he thinks the car was there when he first got He knows. He He said, "I know. I know." >> Okay. That that if we end up going to court on this, you know, if she wants to fight it, and she may because she's on probation. >> Okay. All right. >> Because you can't testify to what he says. He's the only one that can testify to what to what he saw, >> right? >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. Thank you. >> She said the car was there when she went in. She was inside the store for at least a half hour before she came. >> With the owner now sitting in the back of the patrol car, it's worth going back to what that puppy was dealing with. A car sitting in full sun heats up incredibly fast. Cracking the windows that barely makes a difference. On a 92°ree day, the temperature inside can jump about 20° in just 10 [music] minutes. And dogs don't sweat like we do. They rely on panting to cool themselves down. But once the air gets that hot, what exactly are they supposed to cool themselves with? For a puppy, heat stroke can happen fast. When the owner came outside, she told officers she'd only been in the store for about [music] 30 seconds. There was just one problem. Officers had already been there for more than 10 minutes. When they pointed that out, the explanation changed. The line had been long. And according to the report, the woman who called police said the car was already there when she arrived, possibly 30 minutes or more earlier. So, >> yeah. But something like this, it really isn't that difficult to find out how long exactly they were there because in a plaza like this, there's cameras all over the place, especially parking lots and stuff like that. So, if they really want to get into it, they could really pull the pull the footage, you know. Um, but yeah, this is just the her response is what was worrisome to me. Like, it was just like no, no care for real. Like, oh, it was the windows were down. They weren't down. They were cracked. The dog couldn't even get his nose through there for real. Like it was it was that's no man. No. No. And I can see I can see why she would be on probation, man. The attitude, the just take accountability, man. What's wrong with that? >> Yeah. Leaving a puppy sitting in that kind of heat. That's what led to the charge she was about to face. In the end, the 26-year-old of Crest View was taken to the Lake County Jail, facing one charge of animal cruelty under Florida law with no bond. >> Oops. Wow. Yeah. It's just take accountability. Take accountability. That's it, man. That poor dog. [music] Make it feel light. [music] Just fly with it. Keep it [music and singing] late night. Don't be shy.
