On today's body cam, we're checking out she buys $40,000 Jeep with three fake checks. >> 6th, 2025, 29-year-old Gertie Nate went to a car [music] dealership to buy a 2023 Jeep Gladiator. According to jeep.com, the vehicle's manufacturer's suggested retail price starts at approximately $40,000. Gertie gave the dealership a $9,500 cashier's check as a down payment, and 3 days later, she took possession of the vehicle. The check did not clear, so she gave them a second check, which also did not clear. On May 6th, 2025, the dealership invited Gertie to their office to give a third [music] check, which the bank quickly confirmed was fraudulent. >> So, what's going on today? >> You guys were trying to purchase something? Okay, so what are you guys trying to purchase? What? >> We're trying to purchase something. >> Okay, so what exactly is the problem with the contract? >> I guess there's I guess there's I guess there's a problem I guess there's a problem with the check. It's So, I'm just going to be very straight up, and honestly honesty goes a long way. The check's bad. So, what's the deal with the with the with checks and going on and stuff like that? >> What do you mean? >> The checks The checks you used to purchase said vehicle are bad. >> And you come and bring your kid to do crimes? Like, what? Like, you know you know you're not legit. You got to know deep in your inside your head inside your brain that there is a chance that I can get caught. If you're doing bad and you're doing wrong out there, you have to know deep down that, "Hey, there's a This is a risk I'm I'm taking. This is a risk I'm taking, and I could potentially go to jail. So, why would you bring your your whole your little little ones and everything while you're doing business like this. >> And there's another check brought in that is also bad. Do you have the check? >> of this vehicle? >> No, that comes from my phone. >> Okay, can I see it? >> All right, do you have the check? >> Do me a favor, just go ahead and have a seat. As well. All right. >> This is like a down payment for the complete payment of the car. >> Yeah, so the initial down payment, which was $9,500. They've given us already two bad checks. Okay. And now they brought me a third check, which we can't verify as well. So, all these checks um I called their lender today to see if they could verify that check. She said they have no indication of that check that it's it's it's basically it's fraudulent. >> Okay. >> All right, we're going to we're going to speak to you guys individually. So, if one of you guys want to come with me >> I'll go with you. >> All right, so before I ask you any questions, I'm just going to read you your rights, okay? With these rights in mind, do you wish to talk to me? >> Sure. >> Okay. Two checks were brought in and they weren't good. And then another check was brought in and then contact which again didn't wasn't good either. They contacted the lender and the lender has no record of that check ever being cashed or being created, any knowledge of it whatsoever. >> You got to love the body language, man. >> However. So, that's all we we have we have an issue here when it comes to the check. So, what's what's going on with the checks? >> I asked him, "How can I make the payment, you know, for the down payment?" I said, "I can bring you uh business check." Like, "What what can I make it?" And then I even asked, I said, "Uh this was on a Friday or Saturday something like that, so the bank was closed. So, um bring the check and um they call me on Wednesday and they say that the check returned. Uh the funds weren't available or something like that. Um and so then uh I came in. They asked me to give him uh uh no. I was here so with the whole situation that it was two checks and stuff like that I had given him the wrong I had given them the wrong check the original check for the original deal before they had asked me to go to get the you know that the that the increase of the down payment was for 7,000. So I had originally given them when we were here we had two checks the one for 7,000 and the one for 95. I had given them the wrong check so I came back and I brought them the correct check with the original down payment amount. And that was on Thursday. That was on Thursday. So you have two checks. >> Yes. >> And what and what was the lender for the checks? What was the what was the bank you used for the checks? >> First Hawaiian. So um No problem. He calls me today well he calls it Joe today and Joe texts me and says you know emergency a Regal called. I said okay no problem. >> Who who who who who who's Joe? >> Uh the the gentleman that's right next to me uh my he is my partner my son's my son's dad. >> Okay. >> So which his name is who the account that's >> Is it is it like a um >> It's his account. >> Oh it's his account so it's it's a loan that's going to him. >> No no no so the vehicle is for both of us. The we both signed the the for the vehicle. >> Oh you're co-signers. >> Yeah we both signed for the vehicle but the bank where the funds are coming from is his bank. And it's his it's his main account that's the account where the check is written out of. They even took me themselves to the bank and >> What did you do at the bank? Huh? What did you do at the bank? >> Check. >> Okay. Which check did you get? >> The one that I gave him that he told me that he hasn't cashed or anything because he hasn't he's not able to cash it or whatever now. >> And this is the check that you handed to me. >> Yes. >> All right. >> The check that I >> Do you know what kind what check number that was that they gave you? >> It starts with nine I believe or something. >> Okay. So you said you have the bank statements. Normally you look at the bank statements and see what check number they wrote wrote out. Is there a way for you to get into that? >> Um >> Yeah because a cashier's check you go to the bank and they they they deduct the money already from your account. So, if you're making big purchases, you know, like if you're going to go buy a vehicle, um you know, they're going to go take the money, you know, you say, "Hey, if you go to the bank, right? Go to the bank. You know, banks be funny about your own money, you know what I mean? So, if you go to the bank and you say, "Hey, I want to get 20,000 out." They're going to ask you a whole bunch of questions, right? Cuz it's not a normal It's It's It's probably out of the ordinary for you or whatever the case may be. And then they'll be like, "Well, you sure you want that much? Or we're going to have to um we're going to have to order the money. We don't keep that much on hand." or whatever, right? And then um you know, if you want the cash. But, instead, they're going to try to push you to get a cash a cashier's check. But, either way, that money is auto Once they make the check, that money came out of your account. You know what I'm saying? So, it's like it's accounted for. I don't know. Or something like that, right? Or maybe once it's cashed, it comes out. One of the One of the two, man, but yeah, I don't know. Crazy situation. Been a while since I got a cashier's check. >> going to give you the bank statements that's already been released. You mean the account itself? Like >> So, when you purchase a buyer's check, it tells you the check number that they're issuing. >> But, no, so it's not it's a business account. So, what they do is they It's a draft check. They print us the check. They print us the check. >> so, you show me the bank the bank statements that are >> Dirty gave the dealership cashier's checks. To obtain a cashier's check, you begin by contacting your bank. The bank will deduct the amount you want to process from your personal account and assume responsibility for paying the recipient. A >> Okay. Okay. All right. I didn't know they Hey, I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THEY WAS GOING TO do a full breakdown like this. It's been a minute since I had one of these, but uh I you know, it's something like that. Yeah, they take the money out. And they give you the the check. Yeah, that's a fact. >> Cashier's check for the amount deducted is then printed and given to you. You will then give the check to the recipient of the money who will cash or deposit it at their own bank. This form of transaction usually makes sellers trust buyers since it is believed the bank already holds the money and will easily deposit it into the seller's account. That explains why the dealership released the Jeep to Gerdy even before attempting to deposit the check. >> Cuz cashier's checks come from the bank. It's not like it's a personal check. You know, when you get your checkbook and they you write your little personal No, not that. The cashier's check come from the bank. >> All of this is coming from your account? >> It's physical. It's Joe's. It's Joe's. >> on his account at all? >> Like are you like an authorized user? Do you have Do you Are you able to access the funds from his account? >> Yeah, I'm on the business part of the business account, yes. >> Okay. Okay. >> But the he's the main signer on the account. I'm just an authorized person on the account. >> Okay. And each one of these checks you physically got from the bank? >> No, um only one of them. The first two we use our system to print our draft checks out. >> What what's >> QuickBooks. >> What's the we use? Use QuickBooks. Okay. So the check was written The check was written prior to funds being available? >> Correct. The first check, yes. >> Okay. >> And they were aware of that. >> And this is And this is from the the And the influx or of money that's from the business side of it from >> Correct, yes. >> Okay. >> We have no arrests in the family. >> Huh? >> You have no arrests? >> I I turned myself in one time before. for uh insurance >> Uh for a uh You're not going to tell me that. >> No, of course not. It's uh I have an It's an insurance fraud. >> Guerdy admitted she had been arrested before for insurance fraud. According to publicly accessible records, she is one of the managers of a company named JRG Restoration. The company claims to specialize in restoring buildings damaged by water. Guerdy was the one that handles the financial side of the company. Following Hurricane Ian that damaged people's property in September 2022, a couple hired the company to help them repair their damaged home. After the work was completed, Guerdy started asking for additional unjustified money and bullied the couple. In the end, she used fraudulent name, emails, and phone calls to obtain almost $19,000 from the couple. At the time of the incident in this video, the court trial for that case was still ongoing. She later pleaded no contest to one of the charges and was ordered to undergo 24 months of probation. >> You being truthful is going to go a long way cuz they're going to pull everything. >> Yeah. >> They already have everything. Everything we have right now >> Wait, hold on. >> It's showing >> They gave her probation? >> contest to one of the charges and was ordered to undergo 24 months of probation. >> You being truthful is going to go a long way cuz they're going to pull everything. >> Yeah. >> They already have everything. Everything we have right now is showing fraudulent activity. >> Okay. >> Right? So, we have choices of what to do, right? DCF can get involved. All these other problems because you have a child that's here. >> Okay. >> My suggestion would be to be truthful and honest. Let's start over. What was the deal? >> Uh honestly, this >> What was the deal? >> I don't know. >> them a check for for them to >> Did you know that the funds weren't available on the check? >> No. Originally, the account is not under my It's not under my name. So, it's his account. We have funds We had the funds pending. It's his account. >> his name. >> Correct. And there's >> And you knew that the funds weren't available on the >> had When we originally turned in the check to them on Saturday, we knew the funds weren't available. They told me they were going to hold the check for a couple days. I asked can I pay you with a business check? And they told me, "Hey, the funds are going to you know, the check's going to be deposited on Monday." >> Okay. >> Or something like that. >> And you brought another check. >> And so, yeah, then they called me and said, "Bring me you know, bring me another check." >> brought that check, were the funds available? >> Huh? >> Were the funds available? >> When I brought it that check, yes. >> And they cashed that check. >> Yeah, they That's the check that we're supposed to cash, and then they >> Yeah, but a bank ain't giving you a cashier's check if the money ain't available, though. Cuz they take the money. >> They called me today and they said that they couldn't cash it because it couldn't recognize it or something like that. And that's what they said, "Go to the bank." The >> So, they said >> The check was like there was soda spilled on it or something, and the >> So, they couldn't recognize the numbers on it? Is that what they're >> That's what they're saying on their end that there's that it said. I don't know how true that is. When I called the bank, the bank told me that the check was never even attempted to be ran through. >> What kind of car did you purchase? >> A Jeep. >> That Jeep that you >> Suburban. >> Based on the officer's conversation, the man with her told the truth. So, they allowed him to leave with their child and arrested Gerdi. >> We got nothing on him. >> Yes. >> It was backwards, like I said. >> Yes. That's what you just said. >> Chad and I agreed that I can go with this kid. Take her now because >> Correct. That's what me and him just had a whole conversation. >> This is a felony. >> So, we talked to him. He's willing to tell us. I got her stuff so we know she ate it. Can we have your stuff? >> All right. >> But I had them also. >> All right. Go up here. Take off your bracelet. Before they Anything else with you. >> I'm sorry, can I ask you a question? >> Yes, ma'am. >> Um Joe is not getting arrested? >> Uh at this point or at from what my knowledge, no. >> So, he's going to be able to take our son home? >> Yes. >> Okay. But will you be able to tell me what I'm being arrested with? >> Uh as of right now, it's going to be for fraud. >> Gertie got two criminal charges, including felony grand theft of a motor vehicle and felony uttering forged bills. [music] As of the time this video was made, her court case is still ongoing. >> [music] [music] [music]
