What's happening? >> What happened? >> What's happening? >> Shoot. Shoot. >> Shoot. Go. Just go. Go. Go. Go. >> Once in the roundabout, you heard everybody running, screaming. Shooter, active shooter. And we had to stop cuz I didn't want to run over all the employees. And then we heard some shots. Boom. Boom. Boom. >> So far all we have is a male, 20 to 30 years of age, wearing blue shirt, glasses, tan pants. >> Three people were killed, seven others injured, two of them in critical condition. >> This weekend's deadly mass shooting at an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho. >> Thank God for the police for saving people. Oh, wait. The police didn't save anybody. >> Police in Idaho are hailing two people as heroes after their split-second decision of confronting a mass shooter in Twin Falls. >> Well, thank God for gun laws. Oh, wait. Gun laws didn't help this time. Gun laws never help. Well, thank God for the politicians for writing laws that save all of us. Wait, that's not true, either. What's going on here? What's really going on? Has anybody ever given you grief, or have you been the subject of an eye roll or two because you insist on being armed wherever you go? It's just the mall. We're just going to the park with the kids. It's a sunny day. We're in a restaurant, for God's sake. Nothing's going to happen. Nothing ever happens. We're safe. Everything's going to be fine. Just leave your gun at home. Yeah, just go ahead and tell that to the people who were just caught up in a mass shooting on an ordinary Saturday afternoon in the high desert of Southern Idaho. While families were lined up for double-doubles and triples and kids begged for animal fries, 25-year-old Chad Williams was plotting to ruin lives. The brand new In-N-Out Burger on Blue Lakes Boulevard in Twin Falls, Idaho, was barely open a week. It was part of the chain's exciting expansion into the Gem State. And then, at 2:29 p.m. on August 1st, pure evil rolled up. Chad Williams stepped onto the scene to create chaos with a semi-automatic rifle and began firing rounds. He fired into cars. He fired into the drive-thru. He fired at people just trying to enjoy a burger. Screams cut through the air. Employees dragged wounded co-workers across the asphalt. Hundreds of potential victims scattered into neighboring businesses. Three people died that day, including one In-N-Out employee who was still taking care of customers when Chad Williams' bullets entered her body. Seven more were wounded, and some critically. One of the injured was taxi driver and Army veteran Terry Dudley, who was shot while charging his car. This wasn't a random gun violence statistic for the evening news. This was a lone predator hunting soft targets in a crowded public space. People like Chad Williams expect to encounter safe working conditions as they commit their heinous acts. They want an easy state fair fish in a barrel zone. It looks like Chad just wanted to end lives and didn't really expect any initial pushback. The problem for him was that two of those fish in the barrel don't order burgers without packing heat. In the middle of the carnage, two Americans did what free people are supposed to do. They fought back. 35-year-old Jordan Salinas is a healthcare worker and a full-time caregiver from nearby Kimberly. He had just pulled into the parking lot with his girlfriend after a morning of horseback riding. He heard the gunfire, saw the panic, and didn't freeze. As everybody else screamed and tried to run away, he drew his M&P 57 by 28 suppressed pistol from his holster and moved toward the threat. Using the training that he had drilled for years for, training which intensified after witnessing another mass shooting in Boise, Salinas established cover, acquired sightlines, and opened fire on Williams. Now, one benefit to having that particular gun is that the standard magazine capacity for that M&P is 22 rounds. Second, the suppressor could have helped in concealing Jordan Salinas and his position from Chad Williams. Not that the suppressor is Hollywood quiet, which is a bunch of BS, but it could have muffled the sound well enough to confuse the idiot who's over there killing people in a restaurant. At the same time, an off-duty Idaho State Trooper, who was also a customer that day, returned fire. Williams, who had been methodically emptying magazines into soft targets, suddenly faced return fire from two directions. And witnesses described him as kind of looking shocked. We don't know if either man's bullets struck Williams, but we do know that the two-way gunfight forced him away from the restaurant and away from the densest crowds. He retreated toward the visitor center parking lot and, as all cowards do, he ended his life with a self-inflicted gunshot. Police Chief Matthew Hicks didn't mince any words. He said that the actions of the armed citizen and the off-duty trooper helped to drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties. >> We can confirm that there was an off-duty state trooper and a citizen who actively engaged the suspect by returning gunfire towards him. We want to take a moment and commend the actions of the off-duty officer and the citizen in their heroic action to stop this incident. We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties. >> Twin Falls County Sheriff Jack Johnson called them true heroes who, without a doubt, saved many lives. Video captured by bystander Lay Cohen shows the exchange. The rifleman firing, the armed civilian answering. You got chaos, courage, and, more importantly, results. And you can count on the media to soft-pedal this. See, the reality is cops are not needed to stop even the worst kind of criminals. So far, the motive remains unclear and everything's under investigation. Williams apparently acted alone and we haven't seen any manifesto yet. What we do know is that a bad man with a rifle was stopped. Not by a 911 response time, not by gun free zone signs, and certainly not by politicians in Washington's District of Criminals. He was stopped by ordinary Americans who are simply exercising their God-given constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms, and who were prepared to use those arms. This is the part of the story that makes media outlets squirm. They'll talk endlessly about how bad the rifle is. They'll demand background checks and more assault weapons bans, more restrictions on the very tools that allowed Salinas and the off-duty trooper to end the threat. They'll treat the armed citizen like an awkward footnote instead of the decisive factor that limited the body count. But the Second Amendment is not a hunting license. It's not a museum piece. It's the individual right of free people to defend themselves and their community when seconds count and police are minutes away. Twin Falls, Idaho just proved once again that an armed society is a polite And when necessary, a society that can stop a mass killer in his tracks. As pathetic and compromised as the NRA is, they do have one thing right. The only thing that's going to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. I mean, who the hell do people try to call when something like this happens? They're They're people they believe to be good guys, and they expect those good guys to bring their guns. Cuz good guys showing up without guns would be ridiculous. In-N-Out President Lynsi Snyder's statement captured the human cost with raw honesty. One of their employees was killed while caring for customers, and the statement said in part, "He took the precious lives of our associate and customers, innocent people who never saw it coming." The company is in mourning. The community is healing. Two of the wounded remain in critical condition as of the latest reports. What you've got here is a liberty lesson written in lead. This event unfolded in Twin Falls, Idaho, a place where the culture still respects the right of law-abiding citizens to carry. That culture produced the two men who forced a mass shooter to abandon his rampage and take his own life instead of claiming more victims. And don't get me wrong, this is not a message or a call to be a vigilante. This is a reminder that you can't trust the government or anybody else to save you. Nobody's coming to save you. And people do want to harm you. Free people have to retain the means to protect the innocent. The same right that leaves a health care worker to be free to a suppressed pistol for self-defense is the same right that kept this tragedy from becoming a much larger massacre. Three dead is three too many. But without the armed response of Jordan Salinas and that off-duty trooper, the number would almost certainly have been much higher. And this isn't theory.
