Watch how the cops treat innocent people who've got nothing to do with the killer who just want to stand outside and smoke and maybe record what the cops are doing. Let's take a look at this and make some comments along the way. At Roadway Inn in Canton, Ohio, the FBI, state, and local police coordinate to arrest alleged murderer James Vanest. The cold case murder of Debbie Miller stems well over 40 years prior. In 1981, newly discovered DNA evidence linked James to several notable items, including the weapon he used to budgeon her to death all those years ago in her apartment in West Virginia. Officials also obtained a weapons warrant and will now attempt to take him under arrest. >> Occupants of 220, US MARSHALSS WITH A WARRANT. COME TO THE DOOR. DO IT NOW. If they don't do what we want them to do, they better comply. >> The east are ordered to stay barricaded inside. It appears officers haven't yet contacted the western rooms directly behind the suspect. Notably, the individuals who were watching the scene unfold begin recording, capturing a rare firsthand view of this multi- agency standoff from inside the danger zone. >> Look, they're all backing up. >> They're moving that car. He's like, "Oh, they're going away." Yeah, they're just bringing in the heavy artillery. >> Oh my god. [screaming] >> Well, I feel a little exposed now. >> That's crazy. You need to come outside with your hands up. If you don't come out, we're going to insert chemical munitions into your apartment. >> They want this whole parking lot cleared. >> This agent just referenced the entire Cracker Barrel parking lot to the north. Officers will need to keep pedestrians inside or evacuate them on the opposite end. We need to get >> So now everybody loses their freedom because they suspect that there's a murder inside a motel room in the next parking lot over. Everybody loses their freedom. Everybody clear out. Can I have you exit out that way, please? On that side, guys. Thank you. >> You guys, if we can move our cars back. >> We need everybody to get in their cars and exit out this lot. Please do so as quick as possible. I'm not going to go inside and get everybody else out of the restaurant. I mean, just if they're in the lot. Yeah. >> Can everybody else move their car? What's up? these cleared out? >> I have no idea. >> No, there's definitely people in the windows there. >> You have a right to know what's going on at >> Yeah, especially we're being trapped in here like prisoners. >> I mean, Billy probably put 30 rounds of pepper balls in there this whole time. >> Let's put the 40 mm in first. All right, go ahead and get to it. All right. >> Hey, when we get ready to move, you guys can take this. >> James is a police department. We need you to come outside and get your hands on. >> We're just going to be right there in front of you on the left side of that truck. I'm just worried about you finding a hole because the Dodge truck covers most of the front of that house. So, just give you a head. You do you, boo. >> Yeah, if he did something that he just brers on the pepper ball gun and that window gas is moving. Come right off your left side. YOU MEAN WE GET to go out there and destroy private property and uh get away with it? Okay. Movement. Moving up the front window. Do one more and then you can throw a couple shotgun in. Yeah. All right, let's hold it there. >> Right, right, right, right. We'll go secure the pepper bowl. If you guys want to hang here, if you got cover, I'll go grab them for you. >> That is the curtain. It look like some of this moving around up there. All right. >> Yeah. >> Did he just misfire his >> Did he just mised that SWAT guy's leg? >> What [clears throat] was that? >> Maybe there's a curtain that looked like somebody was moving around up there, >> right? >> Yep. >> Did he just misfire his >> Wow. What a dumbass. That's how people get killed. >> No. No. >> Nope. >> Hopefully that's enough. I'm ready for some glass breakers when you guys are. >> James, this is the police department. We need you to come outside with your hands up. >> Let him get that drone up and then we'll move up. >> Just be aware you might shoot at it. >> No. Those are alcohol now. Get out. No. Go. >> All right. Can I get one to go move up to break the window? >> I got to do it one at a time. I don't have an empty hopper or something. Oh, that ain't going to be nice. ALL RIGHT, MOTHER. We got a couple. There we go. Can you get it through that? >> Yeah. You're going to have to open up that glass in the middle. Just hanging on. If I had a hopper, that'd been nice. Good. >> Where's the launcher? >> I got it, bro. >> These idiots back over here. >> What? Because I didn't move because there's gunfire. What am I supposed to do? They're not shooting at me. They're shooting at you. You watch from right up here on the side of the truck. >> He's shooting out the side zone. >> Hey, he's shooting out that side room. >> State line of fire from the room is right towards the interstate. Want to let OSB know to shut down 77 South. >> Drone is down. Gas deployed. >> They're about to blow something out in that room cuz he started shooting at them as soon as the drones are got the whole parking lot blocked off just for this bullit. If this was action, they would have already been and you know they would have. >> This guy really wants to smoke. Don't move forward. >> This is why we need helmets. An MRAP, short for mine resistant ambush protected vehicle, is called in to join the Bearecat already on scene. Additional offduty officers are also ordered in via their personal vehicles to assist. The new sniper also takes an alternative position in this corner of the parking lot. Notably, any shot from here will have to thread between fellow officers before reaching the suspect believed to be barricaded in the corner of the motel room behind the bed. >> Yes, m to that door that he's been shooting through. >> Wouldn't hurt. >> Call me on the radio. >> I hear movement. >> Movement. No, >> I'm behind cover. >> Not everybody out. We got everybody to the north side. We got a lot of old people in there. >> One of these raggy ass out here pulled in with us. Like I pulled in and he pulled in beside us at 303. We're in 305. Hey, >> do you want any people in the bear? >> Let's just get it up in front. >> We have the bot. We can insert the bot once we're ready. But we shot at them. The drone's down. This the only thing we have. >> You don't have another drone. You only had one drone. You spent all that money on the Bearcat and all that equipment and you only got one drone. >> Right now. >> Oh, there you go. For the drone, he's still in between the bed and that wall. Well, we're not going to be able to see the robot. We're not going to be able to put it up there with us. I'm trying to keep news. >> Everybody in the building is right here, sir. >> All right, we need everybody on this north wall. Single file. Do not leave the cover of the building. Please quit filming, please, sir. And exit the building. >> Quit filming police, sir. No, keep filming police. >> Hi. Um, I am currently trying to get something on the duty. Somebody just got shot. They evacuated Crackle Barrel but left me and my kids in my hotel room. >> I have video of the officer getting shot. >> My kids are scared. THEY EVACUATED EVERYBODY BUT LEFT US HERE KNOWING MY I HAVE KIDS OVER HERE. WHAT CAN I DO? >> When our M wrap gets here, we're going to drive it right through that wall. Actually, let's hold off for a second. [music] Let me think about this. >> I want to take ours, angle it this way, and just smash his truck. You want to put some guys in there fire >> for lethal force yet? >> We're open for business. >> They haven't evacuated. >> That's what I heard. So, how many people's shot? >> How many shots have been fired? >> A lot. >> They want to push that guy's truck. Trying to push it south. [clears throat] >> Okay. >> See the gas? >> Oh, yeah. I couldn't see inside the room. All you saw was just like a >> How much ammo really had too, you know. >> Keep shooting. >> The green light. If you shoot with our armor, >> chop it up. Just stop right here. my truck so I can grab my gas mask for my rifle. >> Wait a minute. We actually get to drive the M wrap through a motel. Oh my god. This is exactly what I signed up for. Property destruction. >> What's up, boys? Come on in, >> fellas. Yes, >> we got a bunch of people out >> ready to move. >> I'm pushing right through here. >> Yeah, hold on. They're going to have to move. >> So, this is very end unit, I'm assuming. >> He's shooting through this wall. >> He's been shooting through this wall. >> I see. Yeah, I see the holes now. >> There's people. See this guy in the orange hoodie right here looking out the window. >> Behind the wall. The out of there, stupid ass. >> Stop. I'm telling him to get out of there. He needs to get out of there. Jesus Christ. How are those people not out? Oh, they're pushing it. Yeah. Move this mother. >> We don't care whose truck this is. We are going to ram it. >> Yep. Just hold right there. Hold right there. I got you. What the hell? >> MRAP. I think what they're planning to do is push in that north wall. >> This is all for one guy that they suspect of murdering this woman 43 years ago. They don't know for sure, but they keep shooting. They didn't know for sure if there was a hostage, but they were shooting anyway and asking questions later. Typical cop fashion. >> Wouldn't open for business, but just stay out of >> doors. I don't know about you guys, but I can't see through this window. >> No, we can get that [clears throat] window completely taken out. >> That would help a lot. You guys shoot this glass out? >> Yeah, we're going to try to take it out. >> One baton. >> Wooden baton. >> One baton. >> You're good, Mike. >> Go lower right. >> Let me know if you see any movement. breaking very good. Now it's hot. Hey, >> can we get something flammable in there and just burn them out? >> The whole place on fire. >> What a bunch of dumb asses. This is Keystone cops with SWAT equipment. >> What a baton. >> Can we burn him out? baton. >> He's still shooting out of the building. So, we're just going to >> Someone want to tell him it's not the shooter. >> That's OSB troopers shooting into the apartment. >> Yeah, they're using window breakers. Mike, stand by. Move him behind the bed. >> Yeah, he's moving. He's still moving. He's rolling right far side of the bed. West left side of the room. >> If we have to pop out, we're right in the line of fire. >> Might not be behind that bed anymore. It's hard to tell with this glare. The guy is still alive with hundreds of rounds fired into his little 200 square f foot motel room, including sniper fire, and he's still alive. >> Tell us if they GOT A SHOT. SHOOT HIM. >> THERE HE IS. Heads up, guys. >> There we go. >> Keep going. Keep going. Take over to the middle of that. >> I have a shot. I have a shot. All right, he moved the pillow. That's good. Good. >> He's pointed a gun at me through the port. I engaged an angel of rounds. We could technically have casualties in those rooms right now and not know. >> Where are we at classwise? What do you want? >> Take that big chunk in the middle. >> Got a bunch of clothes and piling up. Those rails are completely ineffective. >> Can you imagine being the motel owner and just watching all this stuff go down going, "Oh my god, what are they doing to my property? Run ahead. >> Nothing. Trash bagon. >> This is not taking that big chunk. Mike, >> I got you. >> There you go. Good job, Mike. There you go. >> You got any movement at all since I engaged? >> I haven't seen anything. >> There you go. >> Yeah, there you go, Mike. >> I got good vision through that window now. Still no movement. >> Can we clear these rooms? People say they did. >> No. Yeah. See if they'll let us go down through there. >> People over there. >> Yep. So, I'm looking straight down that bed to the right. >> We got enough armor here. We're just trying to uh keep fogging up. Yeah. I mean, if I get in the head, it is what it is, I guess. I blatantly saw him point a gun over the bed. If he moves anymore, I'm shooting again. >> This is not turning on. >> I think your headset's dead. It's doing something weird. So, when you click the second click, is it going? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Is that blood in the wall too or no? >> Yeah. >> I CAN'T TELL. >> THERE'S CIVILIANS ON THE BACK SIDE. HOW ARE THEY NOT EVACUATED? >> I don't know. That's what we were told. Need you to call all these rooms. They need to come out and go left. >> No, they don't. >> I got no shoes on. I'm okay. I fine, dude. I almost had to walk away from that lady that was yelling at me about the sue. I'm like, "Okay, >> yeah, folks. >> Hey, go ahead and sue me. I got qualified immunity. Ain't nothing going to happen to me. Nothing's coming out of my pocket or pension. >> You need to get down on that side of the building. Move straight down this sidewalk. >> You want me to take off from the roof here?" >> This is the kind of government incompetence that really, really makes government agents dangerous. >> We got this. I have not seen any movement at all since we engaged. And if you get movement, put your laser above them on the bed and I can send one through the bed. >> Let's just go one by one. You guys already go 213. That's clear. >> Sheriff's office. Anybody in here? >> Aircraft in authorization zone. Unable to take off. >> I think he's down. I see his head. >> You see the head? >> Yeah. >> Yeah, I see the head. They toss a bang right in from there. You might get a reaction if he's still alive. >> I know. I shot like probably seven, eight rounds. >> Okay, all these people need away. Need over here. Get away from this window. >> Extra set of eyes. >> So you guys first day on the basement. >> The door. We did it say on there. >> Aircraft and geo on a unable to take I'm assuming off. She cuts it off. >> We're geo fence from the airport. We're trying to get it up. They're waiting on confirmation from the airport. Coming to an airport. This is life-threatening. Is he punching a hole in the wall? >> Okay. >> You mean SWAT doesn't have a geoence override near an airport? You have got to be kidding me. There's zero coordination here. >> Looks like we got everybody out. >> It sounds like Okay, so when we initially showed up, they said that that was all evacuated. I saw people in that back corner. When I talked to Belly, I was like, "What the?" He doesn't have to run. >> The belly sticking up. This is just common. >> How many? >> They got a robot going in. >> Why is it so spicy? >> This is the stupidest. >> Yeah, we got them last four, five rooms. >> They're yelling over there to get out of there. >> Yep. >> The cops are behind this building talking about how stupid SWAT is. See no moving on your side? No. >> They have training for this kind of stuff. >> You guys are watching. They're looking at his head. Okay. >> So, he's going to pop up there. >> How many rounds put in and out of that one? >> So, you tell me all those people are sitting in there. >> Oh, that's what I'm worried about with that room 200. firing into that. So I'm knocking on that route 200 right here on end. That mother could be laying in there dead. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. >> He's going to throw a bang through there. See if he gets >> They probably know he's dead. They probably know he's been dead for 15 minutes, but that just gives them an excuse to keep on shooting into the room. >> Anything? >> I got nothing on my end. Nope. With that smoke clear, see if that body part's still just sitting back where it was. Mike, did that leave you a hole big enough to get your robot through? No, not big enough. >> Yeah, >> drones a nogo. >> Big drone's a nogo. >> Tell him drone. I don't give a fly. >> They got it locked. >> Unlock it on airport. >> He's still there. >> How did the other drone fly around if it's geof fenced over there? >> You want to try to get another one? >> Throw another bang. Yeah, another bang. >> Robots's in there. Right on him. He's down. He's down. >> Hang on. He's >> Hey, Zack. He's down. >> All right. Does he Did he pull the pins up his >> Yeah. >> All right. Have him deploy and then we'll go for good measure. >> As soon as the smoke dissipates, shield up. >> Hang on. We'll be in a hurry. >> DEAD BODY. >> YES. YES. >> I WANT TO BANG over top of the rope. Watch him. If it is, we can hold and then get in there. >> You want to bang? We were going to less reth. >> No, I want to bang. You want to lessen him, too? West Regal, but I want to bang on the back side of the bed where he's at. And then Mike's going to watch. >> All right, robot still has eyes on the subject. >> All right, go ahead. Move up to the door and get that bang deployed. Deep off gun. >> No movement. No movement. Make sure >> Jesus Christ. Ext. We got fire. >> Fire is growing. Wouldn't it be just hilarious if the entire complex burned down? Right here. Right here. There is no >> dude. There's no >> He [laughter] doesn't know how to work the fire extinguisher. >> I only know how to kill people, man. I don't know how to put out fires that we started. >> Hey, turn that the the faucet on. Watch out. Watch out. >> They can't smother the fire. That's not an option, officers. >> Hey, bring some more in here. >> The fans are on fire. >> On fire. >> Yes. >> 51 airplane. Suspect down. 51 under him right here. >> Yeah. No, I'm getting fresh air. >> Space secured. >> He's got multiple pistols here. >> I want all those apartments on the backside. Check to make sure no >> What a circus of incompetence. Bunch of juggling clowns. >> Hurt in any of those apartments. >> You got the gun there. You want me to? >> No. You got the gun? >> Lewis is good. He's got hit in the arm. Didn't break anything. So, other than like are Lewis. Oh no. >> Yeah, he's the one. >> I didn't know we I didn't know we had anyone got hit. >> See, I was gentle cuz I didn't want bear. Still usable. >> First time driving the bear. >> I hope your gun was >> I was gentle as I could. Legit. >> I'm going to keep this on for now just because I'm covering my ass. That looks nice. The truck. >> Yeah, he's got a gun in his hand. He's still got his finger on the trigger. Ask them if they want him out there. >> DO YOU WANT GUNS? MOVE. They're in his hand. >> Remove it so they can trigger. >> What the are we doing? Hey, do we want him out? DO WE WANT HIM OUT? >> LET'S get the guns and get out. >> No, I'm not in all kinds of he obviously. >> Let's look at this gun. That gun right there in the hand of one man kept all those cops at bay. That right there is why the government doesn't want you to have guns. No, I'm not in those signs of life. See, obviously you can see it in. Okay, >> he ain't hit the head. >> I don't think you're breathing now. They said he said leave him away. >> They didn't even get get him in the head. >> Leave it. I leave it in there. >> And I'm only laughing cuz this is so bizarre. This is so strange. They trained for this and they messed it up this bad. They couldn't be more effective, more efficient, less deadly. They couldn't have uh approached this situation where they didn't put all of these lives at risk. They had to do it this way. >> There was no other option. >> Shut it down. That BCI is going to need it. Just check them all. Let me check real close one more time. Yeah. He not hitting the head. Careful. No. >> Threats neutralized, folks. Everybody can either go back inside or leave. Let's see if they're no longer with us. >> You did not do a good job at all. >> None of this right here had to happen, guys. >> That was a lot of gunfire, right? That was That was nuts. >> How many of those went through? You want to step out? I'm getting crazy. >> Officers searched the remaining rooms. There were no other individuals injured. Afterwards, they made contact with the individuals who recorded and voiced their opinions throughout the hours long incident. >> Thank you. >> Why couldn't y'all help us out earlier? Y'all didn't care earlier >> and you only care now because we're we opened the door freaking out on y'all. >> No, that's that's not >> That's what it feels like though because YOU GUYS IN FACT >> WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP YOU OUT RIGHT NOW? Because >> out like I'm trying to go. like I don't want to be here. >> I completely see where you're coming from. Okay. In a situation like this, we did the best we could in the little bit of time that we had. >> That is the best you could do. You've got to be kidding me. >> Let's just be thankful that everybody's safe. >> I send the city a bill for me not being able to get out. >> Before anything, >> I haven't been able to get out and work all day. >> If you and your kids were to come out right here while he's shooting out his door right here, how could we have saved you? the stop. The easiest thing in these >> How could we have saved you? You almost killed all of us, including the people out on the roadway. >> For you guys and your kids was telling you to take cover. We had officers right here getting shot at. >> Oh, well, we've seen everyone. >> Okay. Do you understand what I'm saying now? >> Yes. I'm just trying to leave. >> Okay, that's fine. >> Security footage shows these bystanders remained in their room for at least the next few hours, during which it appears their dog got loose, ran under caution tape, and among officers before going back inside. Regarded, >> surprised they didn't shoot the dog. >> The suspect James was killed during the exchange of gunfire. However, the publicly provided BCI summary redacts the corner's autopsy as required by Ohio law, concealing the details behind his cause of death. The report does detail that nine officers fired their rifles during the shooting incident. Investigators recovered 147 rifle casings linked to officers, 15 casings from inside James' room, and at least 39 identifiable less lethal rounds, excluding the dozens upon dozens of pepper ball ammunition. BCI cautioned the >> He only fired 15 times. Wow. >> True number of shots fired may have been even higher. Investigators found James with two handguns and four additional loaded magazines in the room with him. In his truck, he had three additional firearms. >> He was able to hold off all of that personnel, including armored personnel, with two handguns, shooting only 15 rounds. Think about that. along with magazines and ammunition. BCI's investigation found James fired first, continued shooting toward officers and the public, and was given multiple opportunities to surrender. Reports indicate officers were legally justified in their use of deadly force, and no criminal charges were filed. That was just a clown show of incompetence. And the question is, was James actually guilty of the murder? Cuz they were treating him as guilty before he tried to prove himself innocent.
