On February 8th, 2025, officers were
dispatched in response to reports of a
child walking alone on the highway in
cold and rainy conditions.
How How old are you? You're not in
trouble. How old are you? Okay. Do your
parents know you're out here? Yeah, I'm
really close to home. Okay. Uh that's
the only reason we were called is cuz
it's real dangerous. It's rainy and
there's car driving fast. Where's
Where's home? You want to get my mom in
trouble? What's that? You want to get my
mom in trouble? I won't get your mom in
trouble. I just want you to get home
safely. Okay, give me one second. I'm
going to turn my rear lights off. Yeah,
you're not in trouble. I just don't want
you to get hit by a car. It's raining
and Oh, yeah. No, but my mom in trouble.
Is Is there a reason your mom in
trouble? She doing okay?
Okay. Mad. Okay. So, did you run away
today or how'd you end up out here in
the rain? It's cold. Yeah, I was uh we
need the second and she saw our post and
so I asked her okay. Okay. And she
really didn't want me to. Okay. But I
figured and she's been following me. She
knows where I am. Oh, is she out here
looking for you? She's not looking for
me. She knows how I was missing, but she
Okay.
Okay. Um here, let me get you out of the
cold. I'll get you home. Okay. That's
again that's that's all I'm worried
about. I want to get you home. Okay.
It's It's uh almost below freezing.
You're soaking wet. Are you cold? Not
really. Not really. What's your mama's
name?
I don't remember, too. I think I met
her. I think I've met her before. Do you
stay with your grandparents sometimes?
Yeah. Okay. I was actually out there
with you that day. Do you do you
remember me talking to you? Uh yeah.
Okay. Yeah, I remember with you guys.
You doing okay? Yeah, we're doing okay
with that. Do you live with your mom
full time now? Are you still Yeah, we
live with my mom full time now. We got
it cleaned up and we doing pretty good.
Okay, that's good. You feeling all
right? You're Yeah. Okay. How um so
again, so tell me again how you ended up
here. Well, so I just wanted to break
because I was yelling at her and sending
me stuff. I didn't want to get her
angry. Okay. And then I just asked if I
could walk and then she didn't want me
to. But um so then she's been like
following me like she's parked there.
She asked and made sure I'm okay. Okay.
And all that stuff. So what where did
you get out of the car? Do you remember
like what business you were by or what
street you were by?
Um, so I don't know where it
was. So you go there, you turn left, and
there's a bypass. It was almost around
there. Does she pass you or does she
does she turn a different direction?
She's been like going and stopping
around me like she's making sure Okay.
Yeah. Like she's always Do you know
where she's at now? Um, I don't I'm
assuming she's like parked up right on
this first road or at home. Okay. Like
waiting for you. Yeah. Normally she like
does it and she like stops at like a
good spot that's like public and she
stopped to make sure I'm okay. I'm
pretty sure she felt like she really
wanted me to get in and probably by
um Yeah, she would make sure I Okay.
Okay. Yeah. So, you guys got in a little
a little argument or you were mad about
what happened. So, then you got I didn't
want to cuz I was Did you ask to be get
out of the car? Yeah. I said hurtful
things and I didn't want to say more.
So, I asked to step out and she was
reluctant and didn't really want me to,
but she made sure I put on everything
and then I had a cold and then she's
been watching me, snapping me, making
sure I'm okay and stuff like that. Okay.
Were you out with me on that call where
we almost busted through the door
because the flies were in the windows
and turned out she actually lived there?
Were you not working on that? It was
Sean. Okay. So, we opened a CPS case on
this mom because for deplorable
conditions um cuz the house was there
was like dead animals lying around and
um we thought she somebody was dead in
there. It was so bad. So, this is her
kid. So, I recognized him, started
talking to him. They got in some
argument. She dumped him out of the car
at the bike path on Graange Hall and
drove home, left him to walk and he's
13. He's soaking wet. This is the second
time we've been called for. No parent in
their right mind would. She said she she
she he realized he forgot his cell phone
in the car and she drove by and held it
up to show him that she had it and kept
driving left. I think he might be on the
spectrum or have some um autism I think
is is in the history. He seems okay. He
doesn't seem injured in any way, but
he's walking along 835 which is a you
know a high-speed road with no sidewalk
um in this weather and he's soaking wet.
Yeah. Just I mean I I can't I don't
think any parent in their right mind
would dump their kid on a busy road like
this and have have them walk miles home
in the rain and the cold. still doing
okay. Yeah, I just saw my mom. She just
passed by. Did she just pass by? Yeah, I
was trying to get out, but I didn't.
Okay. She went that way. She was coming
this way. Coming back to us. Oh, like
she was looking for you. Yeah, I think
she looked at us and I think she might
know it's me, but I'm not sure. So, she
might be turning back around. Yeah, she
might be. I don't know. How's it going?
Yep. Yep, we do. I don't know if you
remember. I was I was out with you guys
before we were at your house on straight
arrow. Yeah. Um, so you found him
running running around the road, right?
Yeah. Okay. Um, go ahead and I I got all
his. Go ahead and explain to me why why.
Okay. So, he was in a really angry mood
at a competition that he had been at. He
was pursing at me. He was trying to jump
out of the car. Okay. So, um, I was
getting concerned about him and so he
pulled over. He got out of the car and
he's been walking home and I've come up
on him multiple times and said, "Come
on, get in the car if you want." Okay.
Um, has this happened before? Yes. Um,
so I've been out here with him for
probably 20 minutes. Where where have
you been during that? I was trying to
find him because I didn't know. So, how
did he end up out of your sight? Um,
because he was walking this way and I
had to turn around and come on back and
then I wasn't sure. You should you
should have followed
him. Okay. And why not? Um I was trying
to give him some space to cool down.
Okay. Um so I know last time I was out
with you guys he's staying with my
grandparents part time. Has he been with
you full time for a while? Yes. And he's
really been doing well. This is the
first active
um recently. This is why we're opening
the consul where he told me he's been
doing things like that. And okay, so uh
that's what he was doing. Okay. Today he
had discussion of googling ways to
commit suicide. Well, today he didn't
even talk about that. He was saying that
he was stupid.
Okay. Um so he's he's 13. He says he's
better off
and you know how it sounds. You're
leaving him in 30° weather in the rain
to walk miles home. He's out of your
sight for 20 plus minutes. Okay. And
he's he's a a juvenile on the on the
younger side. Yes, sir. On a busy
highway with no sidewalk. Yes, sir. I
thought he
had you let him out of your sight. Yes.
Okay. He said that while he's been
walking in this, he's seen you pass by a
few times and not stopped. I have
stopped every single time. Okay. But
before you said you didn't know he was
here, you thought he was on Grandpa? I
haven't stopped him on this road. No.
So, I'm I'm going to make a call to our
supervisor. Okay. I'm not I'm not going
to release him to you yet. What I'm
going to have you do is go sit in your
car. We're going to pull over there and
get off the road. Just kind of decide
how we want to handle it, right? Because
it's it's kind of an unusual situation.
I know there's there's history you have
with CPS, right? Are is there still an
open case? It's been closed. This road
has no sidewalk. What's the reason you
let him out of your view? Why did you
drive away?
That like make him feel like you might
lead him. Not that I would I would never
leave him. Okay. but he's telling me
like better off without me. And so I was
like, well, let me let him out of his
sight for a little bit and just let that
kind of reality take. Okay. If that
makes sense. Not that I was never going
to come back for just to kind of make a
little
bit of nothing. Okay. Okay. So maybe a
bit of poor judgment. Okay. Because you
we got the long sidewalks and the
weather, right? It's inherently
dangerous walking along this road. Um
I'm not even sure if it's legal for an
adult to run along this road. All right.
It's considered a highway.
Yeah, it was considered a highway. And
also the um he could be picked up by a
stranger. You were he was out of your
sight for an extended period of time,
right? He could have been gone and you
never would have known. Um so he's he's
a nice kid, right? I've talked to him.
He's always smiling. He's always
friendly. Did you consider the
possibility of a stranger rolling up
saying, "Hey, let me get you help." And
then you never see him again.
But I didn't know that you caught him.
Okay. At first and so I was still
looking for him. I definitely thought
about that.
I wasn't scared looking for him. Okay.
But I thought he was
okay and then when I couldn't find him,
it started to get really really nervous.
Okay. Okay. Um, go ahead and have a seat
in your car. We're going to get off the
road. We'll pull into the entrance over
there. Just stay there. We'll pull over
there and get off the road just so we're
not walking traffic.
So, I'm going to release him back to you
in a second. Okay. I'm going to talk to
him. Um, I want him to hear anything I'm
saying. Okay. I called a supervisor and
discuss the situation. Okay. Um, so what
what we're going to do is issue a
criminal summon for charred endangering
with the mandatory court. Okay. You're
not going to jail. It's a misdemeanor.
Um but based on so kind of what I've you
discussed with you a little bit um the
facts of the situation his his age the
location and the roadways involved the
temperature the weather um the fact that
he was out of view for an extended
period of time um that we had to be
called out by a stranger like to to find
him. All of the things are taken into
account, right? Um so this uh citation
be issued, it's essentially it's called
child and danger. It's for a lapse of
due care that you're responsible for
because he's in your custody. Okay. Um
any questions about that? Okay. Again,
it's it's Yeah. Yeah. I'm going send him
over to you in a second. I just wanted
to again I told him, you know, he's he's
worried about about you, right? You're
his mom. So, um told him you're not
going to jail. Nobody's in trouble is
what I told him. Um cuz this is between
you and us in the court. He doesn't have
to know. There's no reason for that.
Okay. Um it is going to open up another
another CPS case.
Okay. So, is that is the the previous
one is that the first one? Yes, sir.
Okay. So, this would be the second one.
Okay. Um Yeah.
Yeah. So, here's what I just called Brad
cuz all this stuff's new to me. All
right. He said if we can find someone to
watch watch the kid
um that we need to actually lock her
up. So we actually need to just write
her a ticket, lock her up. It'll be the
next day, next available court date,
11:00 a.m. Um what we can do is we could
follow her back to the house and that
way she can drop her car away. We don't
have to tow it. release the child back
to the grandpa and then and then hook
her. Okay.
You can probably go sit in grandpa's car
now if you
want. Grandpa know he's going to take it
from there.
The woman was booked into jail where she
remained for two nights. The case
remains ongoing. Share your thoughts
