Hello, this is Roger. Hi, good afternoon Roger. This is Officer Valdez with the Boca Raton Police Department. How can I help you today? >> Yes, hi. How are you? Good, thank you. >> [snorts] >> Um, so you're calling on the behalf of your dad? Yes, my father. I'm in Massachusetts at the moment. My father's house is in uh is in Boca Raton. Okay. >> And um Yes. Go ahead. No, no, tell me um what are you trying to report? Yeah. So, over the last um 3 weeks um we've discovered that someone has physically been removing checks uh from his checkbook uh for Chase Bank and uh fraudulently uh cashing them. Um I can piece it together roughly uh for you. Um so, on March uh in in March he discovered on his statement a couple of checks that were not related to any of his activity. And he made a meeting on March 19th uh with the uh agent at Chase Bank. They discovered that a check number 7028 was cashed on March 10th for $1,000. And a second check was cashed on March 12th, check 7029, also for $1,000. He noticed those things on his bank statement, but during the meeting on March 19th they discovered a third check had been cashed on March 16th for $1,500 to a Jean-Max Mortimer. That was the name on the check. Okay. >> that meeting they closed the account and opened a new account and during the week of March 24th he received a new checkbook. And then this is what was shocking is that he went back for a second meeting on April 2nd, 2 days ago. And they found that a check from this new checkbook, check number 161, um was cashed I think again for $1,000. [snorts] And so what that means is that the person who was removing these checks had to have been in the house sometime between the week of March 24th and the date of April 2nd. Okay. When we first um learned of this, he he he's 95 years old, he's almost 95 years old and he has uh caregivers who have gone into the house. When we first um learned of the first checkbook, I suspected a substitute caregiver that was with a a previous woman that we were working with. [snorts] However, um neither that previous woman nor this substitute caregiver were in the house during this past week. And therefore, it's really sad and shocking, but we we suspect um the caregiver who's been helping him for this last month. Um the caregiver's boss brought this up with her and she vehemently denied um having anything to do with it. Um we hope that's the case, but we just can't think of anybody else who's been in the house in this past week who is a very trusted and and long-standing uh you know, person we've known for a long long time. So, that's our situation. So, I some pictures. Um So, are you aware of like the situation that's going on and what happened? Yeah, one of the patients had some checks. Yes. That were cashed, right? Yeah. >> Yes, correct. So, um I just want to ask you like a few questions. Is that okay? Sure. Okay. Um so, this thing's recording. So, are you familiar with anyone named Jean Max Mortimer? No. And are you familiar with anyone named Um there was another Let me write that down. Oh, I'm going to get them. I'm just shuffling my papers, I don't want them flying to her. Okay, so you don't know who Max Mortimer is. No. And do you know a um Anthony Pedioti? No. Or anyone with that name? >> No, not at all. Okay. Nope. Now, I'm going to show you some pictures. Um are you familiar with like your employees? Like have you seen them? Do you see them? >> Okay. Does this person look familiar to you? This is the person that cashed This picture's a little bit difficult to see, but this is the person that cashed uh check number 7028 for $1,000. And if you can't, it's okay. Yeah, this is Gloria. Okay. Is this a female or a male? This is Gloria. Okay. This is the person that cashed check number 7029 for $1,000. This one's a little clearer. Yes. That's the eight. Okay. What's her name? Manuela Manuela Leonard. Okay. Manuela? Manuela. >> Manuela. Okay. How long has she worked for you for? >> Oh my god. >> [music] >> It's okay. She started working last year or the year before. Okay. The year before. Okay. I I have not had any issues at all with her until this came up. Okay. And no other like complaints with with customers, missing checks, or anything like that. Is this the first sign that you've experienced this? Mhm. Okay. Do you know if she's been having any problems? Like any The only problem I know she At least not a problem. She's pregnant. Okay. That's the only thing I know. Okay. Sometimes desperate things um you know, desperate people do desperate things. >> Mhm. Mhm. So um you know, not that she is a bad person. >> Right. Right. But sometimes circumstances causes people to do things. But as a health aide, you can't do this. >> Right. Right. You know. Oh my god. And she's the same person. >> Yeah. It's the same car. Yes. And this is the person they cashed check number 7042 for a $1,500. That one's a little blurry, too. Yeah. This one? The bottom one it seems like her. >> Yeah, it's the same. Cuz look at the steering column. >> Yeah. Yeah, that's her. Okay. Yeah. So, I'm going to make contact with her now and see if she'll um talk to me about it. She may or may not. She's the same color. >> Yes. Yep. If she um doesn't come in and turn herself in after I speak with her or if [clears throat] um if when we talk she is I'm in a position to arrest her, like if it's within the city, Yeah. I'll be filing a warrant for her arrest. >> Okay. Okay. Um whatever you decide to do from here on out is up to you. >> I can't I can't keep her. Okay. I have to report it to AARP as well. Okay. Yeah. I was wondering how that got done. I know sometimes the state attorney's office does that. >> I do I do report it as well because I have evidence. >> Yeah. Oh my god. Yeah. So, um if you could give me till the end of today cuz I'm going to try to contact her and speak with her. Mhm. Um when I leave here I'm going to go back to the office and I'm going to try to contact her after that. Okay. Go and see her. I'll call you like by I'll call you by like 3:00 and let you know cuz I'd I'd rather reach her first before you do. Okay. Okay. >> Yeah, just let me know when to contact her. >> Okay. Is she taking care of any patients right now? >> She's with [music] a lady every Wednesday. Okay. So, I have to call her. Yeah, and that lady hasn't reported anything? I know she um she the daughter canceled her credit card back in January. There were some issues? There were some issues. But she didn't tell me exactly what it was. Okay. And then I got another call and she said that there was a um a Netflix charge on her card. Okay. And then I'm like Netflix. So I asked the the client that said it and when you use your credit card she said no, my wallet is kept in my room. I give no one access to my credit card. I said Emanuella, when you take her for shopping do you at all take her bag, do anything like that? And she said no, she does her own stuff. Hm. Okay. So it's coming to the same person. Okay. Oh my gosh. I'll let you know today so that way you can take care of Wednesday. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. And if you need anything at all, I don't have a card on me but you have my email and my phone number is on there. Call me whatever you need. Okay? Oh, this is so unfair. >> Yeah. You raise your right hand? Yes. Do you swear from the information you gave me is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? That's correct. Okay. I appreciate your help. I don't need anything else. I think you have the information. >> Yeah. And I appreciate you looking at the pictures. Hello. How are you? Thank you. Hey, I'm Detective White. Things are coming in. You're Emanuella? Yes. Do you have ID on you by any chance? Yes. Do you have any patients today that you have to take care of? Okay. Can I show you my green card? Yeah, of course. Yeah, yeah. Do you have a passport or anything? I think my phone is All right. My eyes are bad. Maybe that's a ID. >> [clears throat] >> Okay. Sorry, that's a camera. Does he want me to take a picture of it or Yeah. I don't know what that thing does. So, No, it's okay. So, do you remember this guy? Um, Lena? Yeah. Mhm. Was he like one of your patients? Was he how how was he to take care of? Like was he a nice person to take care of or was he difficult with you? How many times How many Sorry. How long was I taking care of him for? Yeah, like how long did you take care of him for? That's That's long. It's not long. Not long? Not long. Maybe one or two months. Okay. Not long. Okay. Did he have like a lot of people visiting him or did he have um, like a lot of visitors like when you would care for him? Were people coming and going? He just >> [snorts] >> Or was he pretty much by himself? A lady where I when I go out it was 7:00 a.m. Okay. to 8:00 p.m. But sometime I think like 20 minutes or 30 minutes. Okay. But he always kept Sorry, my English is It's okay. You're fine. Don't worry. He's always in the morning when I give him some breakfast, everything. Then I ask him, "Can I make some lunch for you?" Mhm. He said, "No, I have a friend coming." So, I never see the friend. Mhm. But, um, him is He always tell me friend coming, but I don't know because sometime I'm coming 7:00, 7:30. Mhm. 7:30 to 8:00. Okay. >> night. Okay. >> work is 7:00 to 9:00, but I never stay for for night. Okay. Okay. It's 2 hour in the morning, 2 hour in the afternoon. Okay. I'm going to have to ask you some questions. I don't don't feel like irritated that I have to ask you them. I just have to ask you these questions. But before I ask you anything, I have to read you, cuz it's a law that I have to read you what your rights are. Okay? Mhm. So, before I show you any pictures that I have to show you, I have to read this to you. Okay? Um I'm required to warn you before you make any statement that you have the following constitutional rights. You have the right to remain silent and not answer any questions. Do you understand? Yes. I understand. Right? So, so you have the right to remain silent and you have the right to not answer any questions if that's what you want to do. You understand? Okay. >> Any statement you make must be freely and voluntarily given. Do you understand that? So, anything you say to me in conversation, I can't force you to say anything. It has to be you want to cooperate, you want to talk to me. Do you understand? Okay. >> You have the right to the presence and representation of a lawyer of your choice before you make any statement and during any questioning. Do you understand? Before we start? So, you have a right to an to a lawyer if you want a lawyer. While I'm asking you questions. >> Are you a lawyer? No, I'm not a lawyer either. But But this is what this says. You have a right to to one if you want one. Okay. Do you understand? Yes. >> Okay. If you cannot afford a lawyer, you are entitled to the presence and representation of a court-appointed lawyer before you make any statement and during any questioning. Do you understand that? So, so during questioning you're if you can't afford an attorney, the state attorney's office will hire one for you. Okay. >> Does that make sense? Not that you're going to need one, but if you do need one then that's the case. Okay. If at any time during the interview, you do not wish to answer any questions, you are privileged to remain silent. Do you understand? Remain silent, I don't understand the reason for So like while I'm talk while we're talking, if you like don't want to talk, that's your right. Okay. You have a right to not talk. Mhm. Okay. Um Sorry, my eyes are bad. Uh let's see. I can make no threats or promises to induce you to make a statement. This must be of your own free will. Do you understand? It's kind of like the one where I can't like threaten you or anything. This has to be like you want to be here, you want to talk to me. Okay. Okay. Any statements can and will be used against you in a court of law. Do you understand? Like any statement you make can be used in the case. Like I could use whatever you say in in the case. Okay. Do you understand [music] these rights as I have read them to you and do you wish to speak with me? Like do you wish to continue to talk to me? Sure. >> Okay. That was easy, right? Just sign right there. Oh, okay. You got it? Mhm. And the time is 12:10. I'm going to put 12:10 right here. And I put in the date, which is 7725. Perfect. Okay. So, we just have to go over those. Um I told you I wanted to show you a picture of a gentleman. So, some checks of Mr. Berry's were cashed. And they were cashed in the name of Jean Max Mortimer. Do you recognize anybody with that name? No. My My agency asked me before. Okay. And that name like means nothing to you or not like an old friend or an ex or anything like that? No, nobody? Um do you know if Mr. Berry had any friends named Jean Mortimer? Did he have anyone visit him? No. I Some just one lady. She just come to fix the medication for me. That's it. Okay. And the first time I see someone before the walker. The walker? Yeah. He stand in line there. Okay. Did Mr. Berry ever mention anyone named Jean? Did he ever say, "My friend Jean's coming over?" Or nothing like that? >> any friends. Okay. I'm going to show you Are you familiar with like the issue with the checks? That he had like Mr. Berry had some checks that were taken from him? No. >> And somebody cashed them? Cash for him? Yeah. Like he had his checks for his bank >> [music] >> and somebody named Jean somebody wrote Jean on the checks and cashed the checks. Are you familiar with that? No. Okay. You're not familiar with anything that happened or you heard about it or >> No, no. No one asked you any questions? >> No. They just my my my agency. Okay. And what did they ask you? I I remember the day. Mhm. >> She just called me. She say, "Mr. Lynn asked me if you know anything about the check." And just the check and the name. The name Jean. Okay. And I said, "No, I don't know anything." Okay. Okay. I'm going to show you a picture of Jean. Okay. Okay? Do you recognize him? No. You never seen him before? No. In passing? Nothing like that? No. Okay. No memory at all of him? Okay. So, I'm I'm going to tell you this, okay? I don't I don't think everyone is a bad person. I think some people have circumstances in life that they deal with and sometimes desperate people do desperate things. Do you understand? I think sometimes um people have situations in their life. Mhm. Like you're I don't think you're a bad person. I Do you think you're a bad person? A bad person? No. No. You're a good person, right? Yes. But I think sometimes in life you can have situations, hard times, that make you do things that are wrong, right? But doesn't make you a bad person. It [music] makes you somebody who made a very bad mistake. Okay? So, I'm going to show you What kind of car do you drive? Um Toyota. A Toyota? What color is it? White and blue. White and blue? Okay. Can you tell me who that is? Now it's not time to lie. Who is that? I don't know who that is. That's you. It's already been identified as you. People that know you said this is you. What? When? Yeah. >> [clears throat] >> That's clearly you, Ms. Leonard. So, like I said, I don't think you're a bad person. I think you made a very bad mistake. Um for whatever reasons you made the mistake. So, why why would you do this? Why would you cash Mr. Berry's checks? You say I made a mistake? Mhm. You cashed Mr. Berry's check. I cashed Mr. Berry's check? >> This is you driving your car. Don't play games. Okay? Yeah, this is my car. Yes, and that's you driving your car. Yes, this is you. That's you. Okay? And that's you in that picture. Correct? Let me look. Maybe the sun is not hitting me the right way, but that's you. And what about What about this one? The car is The car look like the same my car, but It's your car. Right? And that's you driving it. Yes. Yes. I'm glad that we have honesty because honesty is very important, okay? Cuz if you sit here and you continue to lie about it, it doesn't look good. Lying is not good, okay? So, I'm going to ask you why. I'm going to give you an opportunity. Do you understand? An opportunity to explain to me why you needed to cash his checks. What was going on in your life that you needed to do this? Doesn't make you a bad person. I don't think you're a bad person. I think you made a mistake, but I need to know why from you you did this. Did what? Cash his checks. But I never touch the the cash for for Mr. Allen. So, why did you have his checks? I don't have the check the checks. These are you at the ATM, correct? That you just said. These are pictures of you. Correct? >> Yes. Okay. This is you at the ATM putting this check into the ATM that says Jean Max Mortimer. Can I have a translator translator? Can you have a who? How far along are you? Um 18 weeks. 18 weeks? Okay. Do you live with the dad? No. No? Where's dad at? Boynton. Where? Boynton. Boynton Beach? Okay. Nobody? Mhm. Is this the dad? No. No? But that you lived with this man. No, I live by myself. You live by yourself? Did you ever live with this man? No. Cuz you both have a the same address in common. Address the same? >> Residential address is the same as that guy. Okay. I didn't think so. No? No. I live by myself. Okay. Um I think we will dispatch and see if they can you know, if they can do the like Yeah. >> Like this whole thing is like Yeah. No, not really. Okay. So I know she understands me. Right. Um You know, this is her opportunity to speak. Mhm. If that's what we're going to do here, then you know. So you don't know who Mr. Mortimer Mr. what? Mortimer. The the picture the man that I showed you. No. Is there any reason why the two of you would share a bank account? Why you and that guy in the picture have the same checking account? Go from there to Yes. >> You know what I'm saying? Do the rough through the PC. Right. >> Right. Okay. What's your first What's your first name? Manuela. Manuela? Okay. I'm going to be when we leave here, there's an officer that's going to come right now. We just have to clear you. They just have to say that you're okay. And then we'll go from there. Okay? You understand you're under arrest, correct? I'm under arrest for what? For check fraud and forgery. Cashing Mr. Barry's checks. That's why I was trying to find out from you why. I know you understand me. Yes. >> It's It's okay if you don't speak well, but you understand. You know? So, and you can't fight the fact that you're on video cashing Mr. Berry's checks. Do you understand that? The the video? Being videoed. You got You got that? That you were You're on video in your car. I'm in my car. But, you're in your own car and you have Mr. Berry's checks. Where's your car? Down there somewhere? No, after the Oh, right after the gray car? The gray car. Okay. Oh, I see it. You have a teddy bear in the windshield? Teddy bear? In the windshield? Yes. We're going to have to take all her belongings. I don't know how that works. We You want You want to take her her chain and her stuff and you want to You want to put it in her car? Yeah, maybe the Whoever pulls up might have a bag or something. >> Okay, that's that's good. You're right. May May well also you don't have to take it with you if if it's okay with you, we can put it put your stuff in a bag. You think we can put it in the car? >> No, we'll put it in the No, cuz if it disappears, then She's still there. I don't want to get blamed for that. So, we got to Yeah. Let's do that. I'll take I'll start taking that off. Okay. I'm going to take your chain off, okay? We're going to take it and put it in a bag and we're going to document it, okay? And everything's on video. So, this is recording. I need to be I need to blow my nose now. Yeah, I know. You want to call Tanya and see if she can bring out some gloves? Yeah. You okay? Thank you. You say if if I if I if I have Mhm. if I have a lawyer Mhm. or if if I don't have any Mhm. lawyer and you can recommend Yes. So, what will happen is um if you don't have a lawyer one will be given to you. But, what happens is your case will go to the state attorney's office first and then the state attorney's office will contact the public defender. So, the public defender's office is the one that will provide a lawyer to represent you. So, if you don't have a lawyer, then when the state attorney's office gets your case, then they'll bring in a public defender, and the public defender will speak with you and represent you. >> So, regardless of whether you were going to answer questions today or not, I was going to arrest you because you have been identified in those photos. So, I'm glad I'm glad that you were honest that they were you. Okay? Just I would hope that you continue to be honest. And if there's a reason why you did that, that you would say so. That you would talk about it and not not pretend that you didn't do it. Because you clearly did it. That make sense? So, when you first talking, I didn't understand the last part. Yeah. So, the pictures are you. Mhm. Right? I would hope that you would continue to be honest and not try to lie about it. Because if you lie about it, that's just not good. I think honesty is the best policy. You know? Do you have a gambling problem? Do you gamble? Casino? Casino? Hard Rock Casino? >> Slot machines and stuff like that. Cards? Play cards? No. >> No? Slot machine? You put a quarter in, you pull the bar? Hard Rock? Hard Rock? Hard Rock casino? I don't know. You don't go to the casino? No, I don't go to the casino. Why? Um yeah, would you mind? Is that okay? There's just ants on the steps and I don't want her I don't want them [clears throat] to bite her. Thank you for the bathroom chair. I appreciate it. All right, let's put the chair here. Okay, on three, okay? One, two, three. There you go. I got you. I got you. There you go. There was a lot of ants, so I don't want her sitting on the floor. You okay? Okay. Ants came out of nowhere. What's um dad's name of the baby? Are you married? Woodley. What is it? Woodley. Woodley? Is that the first name or last name? Last. What's his last name? Oh, at the hospital? Are you okay? Was just a checkup? Yes. Oh. What do you have? A boy or a girl? You don't know yet? There's less ants over here. Do you still work for Miss Althea? Althea Nursing? Do you still work for her? Althea Althea Nursing? >> Althea. Mhm. Do you still work for her? How long have you worked for her? So we here. So we here but not through the whole year. Not what? So we here but not the whole year. Oh, okay. Sometime. Mhm. You know, your paychecks from Althea Nursing were going to Bank of America. You said you never chase you never Bank of America. Your paychecks were going to Bank of America. Let me show you. Okay? This is your This is your paycheck. Althea Nursing direct deposit. Manuela Leonard. Oh, yeah. You have space there. So you have space. If you maybe if you sit sideways, why don't you try to sit sideways? That way you're not pressing on your arms, you know? Want to sit this way? On the chair? That way your arms are loose. There you go. That's probably better. Yeah. There you go. Sit right here. Althea Nursing direct deposit. That's you. So your paycheck is Bank of America. So you can't tell me you never banked at Bank of America. And you just banked at Chase. That's not true. What? Yeah. All right. What? What is that? Right. Phone's on my desk. It's necessary to to go to the hospital? Yeah, because you're pregnant. They're just going to make sure that you're okay. They're not going to examine you or anything. They're just going to do like your blood pressure. Make sure you're okay, and then they tell us you're okay, and then we finish. Okay? Yeah, they're not going to no examination or anything like that. They're just going to make sure that like your blood pressure is good. That you're breathing okay. That's it. Okay? these clips holding your hair or are they just for here?
