What do you need, bro? What do you need? WHAT DO YOU NEED? WE'RE GOING TO TASE YOU. GIVE ME YOUR HANDS. GIVE ME YOUR HANDS. YOU RIPPED MY [ __ ] badge off. You're fighting. Give me your hands. >> These things are so [ __ ] TIGHT, DUDE. >> DON'T FIGHT US. This car >> I wasn't even trying to fight y'all. I WAS TRYING TO GRAB HER AS Y'ALL THREW OUT THE CAR. CAN YOU CAN YOU TAKE these off me? Every holiday >> Relax, ma'am. Stop pulling away from me. >> Every holiday they break out. They think IT'S FUNNY. THEY >> OKAY. >> THEY THINK IT'S FUNNY. >> COME ON. >> COME out to Red Roof. Can you please go in here and tell them I didn't DO ANYTHING? IT'S OKAY. IT'S OKAY. >> A seafood restaurant in Brooklyn, Ohio. By the end of the night, an officer's badge is torn off his uniform and four people are under arrest. But the part that stayed with me isn't the arrest, it's what the manager told police about everything that happened before she ever picked up a phone. January 17th, 2024 at 26 minutes past 5:00 in the evening. Brooklyn police receive a report of multiple women threatening to harm restaurant staff. Officers are dispatched within 30 seconds and on scene 4 and 1/2 minutes later. By the time they arrive, the group is in a gray Honda ready to pull out. Officers stop them. >> [screaming] >> It's okay. And I want all y'all badges. >> They're in a gray Honda and outside yelling. You can't miss them. Here. Moving on up. >> WE GOT OUR REFUND, NOW WE OFF THIS [ __ ] >> HEY, you stay here with them. There's already three of them. I'll be all right. >> And then, the manager explains how the evening actually went. They sign their receipt, and then, in her words, they think it's cute to throw the pen at her. She lets that go as well. She calls a co-worker up for backup and asks the group to leave. That's when the threats start. Her answer is four words that tell you exactly how tired she is. And still, she doesn't call the police. She refunds their food. She gives them their money back, pays them, essentially just to get them out of the building. They take the refund, go outside, and start banging on the restaurant windows, screaming. That's when police were finally called. The officer asks whether she wants to press charges. This time, she says yes. >> They're outside banging on the door. >> Yes. What do you have for me? >> I was the first one to deal with them. So, they walk in, I I come up front, and they're literally holding them in, pretending like they're about to throw them. >> All right. >> So, I look at them, I give them a mom look. I'm like, all right, just let it go. You know what I mean? They sign their receipt, and they think they're all cute to swing the pen at me. I let that go, too. >> Okay. >> They're touching everything. Is this real? Is this real? Touching, sniffing. So, I have Ashley come up, and then Ashley comes up, cuz she's she's my she's my tougher big sister type. >> So, I tell them to leave, and they start telling me they're going to punch me. >> Well, that's what they were saying when I >> I said, just do it. >> So then, I said, get out. I refunded their thing. They're outside, they're banging on the windows, screaming. So, then I come outside, and I'm like, now you're outside, you want to get on us. And then the cops pulled up. >> Okay. So, are you a manager or anything? manager? What do you want to do? Do you want to press charges against them? >> absolutely. >> Okay. >> Yeah, they they got to get their act cleaned up. >> Okay. >> They were trespassing. I asked them to leave, they threatened me, they threatened my staff. >> Okay. What What did they threaten you with? >> To to hit us, to punch us, to beat my ass. >> All All three of them did? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, I'll get written statements from you guys and then have you sign tickets since you're the manager. And well, I don't Okay. >> And here's something the report makes clear that you can't tell from the footage alone. The aggravated menacing charge doesn't list one victim. It lists three, the manager and two of her co-workers. These weren't threats aimed at one person. Every employee who came up front got them. Officers moved to make an arrest. >> Hey. Did you get their IDs? >> I told you we need our IDs. >> Yeah, we do. Uh, they want to press charges against you, so yeah. >> CHARGES FOR [screaming] WHAT? WE AIN'T DO NOTHING. WE AIN'T HURT NOBODY. WE AIN'T BREAK [ __ ] WE AIN'T DO NOTHING. >> THEY WANT TO PRESS CHARGES AGAINST YOU. >> OKAY, SO WHAT IS THEY PRESSING CHARGES FOR? >> UH, AGGRAVATED MENACING, TRESPASSING. >> TRESPASSING WHAT? >> TRESPASSING. >> WE WEREN'T TRESPASSING. WE WEREN'T TRESPASSING. WE CAME UP HERE TO GET THE FOOD. >> THEY asked you to leave AND YOU DIDN'T. >> A SECOND WOMAN INTERVENES, shouting at an officer to get off her girlfriend and physically grabbing him mid-arrest. In the struggle, the officer's badge is torn off his uniform. Afterward, she insists she never swung at anyone. She was only trying to pull her girlfriend back. And she's right about that. It doesn't matter. Once an officer says the words she's under arrest, physically pulling that person away is its own offense. In Ohio, THAT'S OBSTRUCTING JUSTICE. >> [screaming] >> I NEED BREATH. WHAT DO YOU NEED? WHAT DO YOU NEED? WE'RE GOING TO TASE YOU. GIVE ME YOUR HANDS. GIVE ME YOUR HANDS. YOU RIPPED MY [ __ ] badge off. YOU'RE FIGHTING. GIVE ME YOUR HANDS. I GOT YOUR BACK. YOU'RE GOING TO JAIL, TOO. GET THAT OFF YOUR BACK. >> WHERE'S MY SHOE AT? >> I'LL GET IT. I THINK IT'S STILL IT'S STILL IN THE CAR. >> OKAY, SO HE'S PULLING my arm, sir. These things ARE TOO [ __ ] TIGHT, DUDE. >> DON'T FIGHT US. THIS CAR >> CAN YOU CAN YOU TAKE THESE OFF OF >> SHE TURNED SOMEBODY else's arrest into her own, and the report confirms it. She's charged with obstructing justice, aggravated menacing, and resisting officers moved to the Honda for the rest of the group. >> I'm done. I'm cool. >> Once we can get you to the car, sure. >> This is not mine. >> What's your ID? >> I don't have ID on me. >> How old are you? >> 22. I just fight and squeeze him. >> Well, don't fight. >> WHO DID I FIGHT? WHAT RUNNING CAMERAS THAT ALL I DID WAS TRY TO GRAB HER. >> I HAVE CAMERAS RUNNING. >> Who did I ever swing on you? I've never swung on you, sir. >> I said she's under arrest. >> And that's why I had TO GRAB HER BACK. THAT'S ALL I DID. >> YOU SLAMMED the door on me. >> How is she under arrest? Why you say what you need ID for? >> I said you're under arrest. And you kept fighting. >> I never swung on you. >> And you pulled her. So, you're going to get another charge. You're getting a obstructing obstructing official business. >> Copy. >> And you broke my [ __ ] You ripped my badge off while we were fighting. I'll get it back to you. Get up. >> You can get my other shoe, sir. >> Yeah. >> It's just over there. >> Just a sandal. >> I think it's in the car. >> COME ON. >> BRO. >> PUT HER IN THE 20. >> ALL RIGHT. >> OUCH. >> PASSENGER SIDE, RIGHT? YOU GOT ANYTHING on you? >> No. >> Okay. And stand in the door jamb. Let me check real quick. >> Ouch. I don't got nothing else. >> All right, have a seat. Have a seat. Get up. >> You can get my other shoe, sir. >> Yeah. >> It's over there. >> Just a sandal. >> A fourth woman refuses to get out, asking over and over what she's being arrested for. Officers warn her repeatedly and tell her plainly they don't want to pull her out of the car. She's on the phone asking someone to come collect the car. And there's a detail in the report that re-frames this whole scene. Three of the four arrested were in their early 20s. The fourth was 46. Two of them share a home address. Then she announces her plan. Pressing charges on the officers. >> What What am I getting arrested for? >> Ma'am, you're under >> What am I GETTING ARRESTED FOR? WHAT? What am I getting arrested for? >> Ma'am, step out of the car. >> I didn't do anything. I didn't do anything. No, I'm not getting arrested. >> I don't want to >> FOR SOMETHING I'M NOT GETTING ARRESTED FOR SOMETHING I DIDN'T DO. >> You have no choice. >> You're not validating. >> You have no choice. You need to step out. I don't want to play with you. I don't want to pull you out of the car. Please step out before I have to. Step out. >> You can GO IN THERE AND ASK HIM. I DIDN'T EVEN DO ANYTHING. >> STEP OUT, MA'AM. >> THAT'S IT. THAT'S IT. I DIDN'T DO >> MA'AM, get off THE PHONE AND STEP OUT. >> They already arrested me. They arrested my mommy. I don't even know WHY I'M GETTING >> I NEED YOU TO STEP OUT. >> I'M I'M BEING SO SERIOUS. >> MA'AM, HANG up the phone and step out. >> Like I'm being so serious. >> This is your last warning, ma'am. Step out or I'm going to pull you out of the car. I prefer not to do that. >> AND THEY ALREADY THEY ALREADY PUT THEIR HANDS ON US. >> STEP OUT. >> THEY PUT THEIR HANDS ON US. They put their hands ON ALL OF US. >> MA'AM, SHOW ME your hands. Put the phone down. PUT THE PHONE DOWN. RELAX, MA'AM. RELAX, MA'AM. STOP PULLING AWAY FROM ME. OKAY, I'M GOING TO NEED YOU TO COME OUT. IT'S OKAY. IT'S OKAY. IT'S OKAY. PEOPLE COMING UP HERE. OURS IS OPEN. It's okay. And I want You got the phone in your pocket. You got anything on you, ma'am? All of it. Okay, we're going to pat you down real quick. Great. That's my phone. Beautiful. I got her. You're pulling my pants down. You know exactly what you're doing. Ma'am, relax. He's pulling MY [ __ ] PANTS DOWN. THE [ __ ] YOU MEAN, RELAX? He's checking your pockets. He's got stuff in there. you're pulling my pants down. All right. Did you take this phone? No. So, Y'ALL Y'ALL DOING IT? I'M PRESSING YOU'RE HURTING MY ARM. ALL RIGHT, GET in the car. Hurting my arm, please. Get in the car. Racist [ __ ] Never heard that one before. >> Roughly 20 minutes after a restaurant manager chose four separate times not to press charges on her, four women were arrested and charged with aggravating menacing, resisting arrest, obstructing justice, and disorderly conduct. Police took the restaurant surveillance video and eight photographs into evidence. All four were given a court date at the Parma Municipal Court. So, here's what stays with me. >> You [ __ ] >> Where are the Where are the keys? >> It's in the car. >> Nothing's in the ignition. >> Yes, it is. >> There's nothing in I tell you there's nothing IN THE IGNITION. >> YOU'RE NOT EVEN ASKING HIM. I DIDN'T EVEN FREAKING DO ANYTHING. >> I'M GETTING YOU IN the car. What do you want me to drag you around in handcuffs? >> I didn't do anything. I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. >> [laughter] >> DID YOU GET THE PLATE ON THIS VEHICLE? >> I DIDN'T EVEN DO ANYTHING. [screaming] NOW YOU'RE ABOUT TO TOW MY [ __ ] CAR. ARE YOU [ __ ] SERIOUS? [screaming] I DIDN'T EVEN DO ANYTHING. ALL I WAS TRYING TO DO IS GET THEM OUT OF THE [screaming] CAR. I WASN'T DOING ANYTHING. Disorderly conduct for what? I didn't do anything. And I'm going to let the judge know that. That y'all arrested me for nothing. Um, excuse me. Um, who has my phone? You can't find out? I am. I'm trying to be calm as as I can. I am. Can you ask my daughter where my phone is? Do you guys have uh pads, tampons? Cuz I'm good. >> A restaurant manager absorbed a fake throw, a pen at her face, a threat to punch her, and then gave away free food all to avoid making this somebody's arrest record. She did everything we tell people to do. She de-escalated four times and none of it worked because the people in front of her weren't looking for an off-ramp. So, if you'd been behind that counter, how many chances would you have given? Two? Four? Or would you have picked up the phone the second that pen came at you? If you've ever worked food service or retail, I especially want to hear from you because I [music] suspect you've lived a version of this shift. Tell me in the comments.
