What's going on? >> My my my husband has been It looks like shot or stabbed or something. My husband is not breathing. Help me. >> Ma'am, where are you at? >> After a disturbing phone call from a 40-year-old woman, Rebecca Fenton, reporting that her husband has been shot. >> I heard a noise. I came in. Yes, my husband is laying in the middle of the floor and something's not moving. I don't know if he's even alive and my husband has been ransacked. >> She was seen smiling and laughing with police officers outside despite her husband lying in the pool of his blood. >> He was respected. He was humble. I didn't speak very often. When he did, he made a lot of sense or he made a firm point. >> But what detectives would eventually uncover would lead to her downfall. >> Do you have a life insurance policy? >> Um I think Larry does, yes. >> For how much? >> I don't know. >> Who's the beneficiary? >> Um I think I am because I'm his wife. >> On February 3rd, 2008, Super [music] Bowl Sunday, Rebecca Fenton returned from the gym located inside a detached building separate from the main house. Upon entering the front door, she suddenly saw a scene that would change her life forever. >> I I just remember going real hazy. I started screaming, "Larry, Larry." And then I saw this pool of blood that was probably 6 in all the way around his body. >> After seeing her husband, Larry Fenton, lying in a pool of blood in the entryway of their home, Rebecca quickly ran outside to make a 911 call. >> What's going on? >> My my husband has been It looks like shot or stabbed or something. My husband is not breathing. Help me. >> Ma'am, where are you at? Well, did you find anything in the house? >> I was in the gym. I was in We have a gym out back and I was working out in the gym. I heard a noise. I came in. Yes, my husband is laying in the middle of the floor and something's not moving. I don't know if he's even alive and my husband has been ransacked. Please, please, please let me get him. >> All right, all right, ma'am. >> He's alive. Please, please, please, I'm sorry. >> Following the 911 call, officers began to arrive at the scene. As they entered, at first glance, it looked like a home invasion robbery by a complete stranger who had come into their house and shot Larry. Larry was found with five gunshot wounds and was lying face up when officers arrived. Although he was pronounced dead at the scene, everything surrounding his death, plus what detectives found inside the house, wasn't adding up. The house was ransacked and drawers were no longer in their usual places. Cabinet doors were left wide open throughout the rooms. Belongings that had once been neatly stored were now tossed across the bedroom and living room floors, leaving a messy trail of disorder throughout the house. And Larry's Jeep was missing from the driveway and was nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, some of the neighbors told detectives that they believed Larry's murder must have emerged from a drug deal gone wrong. Despite the neighbors' opinions, detectives began noticing something about Rebecca that seemed off. After the call, when they arrived at the location, Rebecca ran out to meet them, appearing to be grieving. A friend of hers had also come to console her and stay with her. At one point, Rebecca appeared calm but was shaking a bit. But then something shifted immediately. A few hours after the murder, as soon as the media arrived, Rebecca's tears suddenly vanished and she was captured laughing as if nothing had ever happened to her husband. Meanwhile, inside the house, as detectives continued to take a closer look, they began to notice something else. A real burglar flees after shooting a homeowner. They don't stay to open drawers on two floors and they don't stage a scene and leave the stolen car around the corner. Larry's Jeep was found parked 50 yards away, which made detectives wonder why the driver would stop the car there unless they had a specific place to return to before police arrived. Detectives also noticed that nothing valuable was stolen, not even Larry's cash-filled wallet, gold dot, and valuable items. Books were simply swept off shelves onto the floor. With this discovery, detectives concluded this was a staged crime. Following the conclusion that the crime was staged, detectives made another gruesome discovery. They found the firearm used to kill Larry hidden in a plastic bag under the front passenger seat of Rebecca's vehicle. Inside the bag, they also found some pieces of jewelry Larry had been wearing. When detectives realized the murder weapon actually belonged to the victim, they began to suspect there was a lot more to the story than Rebecca was letting on. When they sat down with her on the night of the murder to question her, things began to fall apart even more. >> I can be talking. Like I said earlier, this is my partner, Detective Rowland. >> How are you? >> Um I just want to get some general information from you and talk about >> her to see if she has anything else? >> Not yet. No. I haven't I I don't have any information yet. Other officers are out on the scene doing what they are. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> The lady said that it was going to take some time. >> Yeah. It will. It usually Um forensics comes out there. Um they do the processing. And um >> It really doesn't matter. He's gone. >> So the more the more evidence obviously we can get you know, processing of the scene, the better it will be and the quicker it will be to catch who done this. >> Good. >> Okay. Okay. >> Do we have an idea? Anything? Neighbors? Did anybody >> There There's um the other officers are out there talking to the neighbors. They're doing canvassing, but they haven't gotten back to me yet. So there's more going on at the scene. No, that's okay. >> When detectives spoke with one of the neighbors, he said he heard five gunshots and a moment later saw Rebecca running out of the house just as officers arrived. The neighbor didn't see anyone else in the house between the gunshots and the officers' arrival. With this, [music] detectives knew Rebecca knew more than she was letting on. >> Okay. As far as work goes, um are you currently working? >> I do a little bit of modeling for Bright Health, but I wouldn't consider it work. >> Okay. >> Um I do a lot of charity work. I'm going to break my anonymity. I'm in Alcoholics Anonymous and have been sober 3 years. >> Okay. >> And um I do a lot of work with hard rehab fellows. >> Okay. >> But I don't work work, but >> Okay. Do you have an agent? >> Do I have an angel? >> No, an agent for your modeling career. >> Oh, no, a friend. >> Okay. So it's it's like private. You're not with an agency. Okay. Um what about your husband? What did he do for a living? >> My husband works for a company um not where he's jacket called Gettinger. G E T I N G E. He was an architect by trade. >> Okay. Is that what the company did? >> No. They sell medical equipment like large sterilizers. He's a supervisor and the board of directors have been being held and they met with him yesterday. >> Okay. >> So they're staying at the Don Ceasar and they're also very good friends with Larry. I'm trying to contact Mr. Cook now. >> Okay, that's the name Larry Cook? I'm sorry, Larry's your husband's name. >> It's Jerry. >> Jerry? >> Cook with an E. >> Okay. >> [clears throat] >> Okay, they sell medical equipment. My husband sells the company. He's 30 years >> Okay. Was there anything else he did um business wise? Was that the only business that he was involved in? >> I did. >> Okay. So then he's been doing that his whole career. Okay. >> I could be a handful. >> [laughter] >> Um is this company based out of Florida or is this >> No, it's uh it's a international company based out of Sweden. >> Okay. >> And domestically they're located in Rochester, New York. >> Okay. Going into a little bit of your personal relationship with him, how long were you all married? >> We were married 3 years. >> Okay. >> Larry was a pharmaceutical rep for a company based in Sweden with a branch located in Rochester, New York. Larry and Rebecca met at a public gym where they were both members. According to Rebecca, she was attracted to Larry because of the way he carried himself. >> He I sold an antique store in the beach capital. >> Okay. >> He had sold rental property and his home for us combined. >> Okay. >> [clears throat] >> We were going to have children, so to be the capital gains taxes, we got married before the end of the year. >> Okay. >> After they met, the two dated for a couple of months and married within a year. Only 3 years had passed before Larry was found dead. >> When you guys first got up, um anything unusual or strange happen in the morning? What was the first What time did you guys get up? >> I had to get up a little bit earlier than usual because I was taking a girl that I I again, you know, I have to tell you I'm in the program. I need to break my anonymity, but it has a lot to do with my life. And one of the girls that I sponsor is in the power program. I had to pick her up to take her to a morning meeting that started at 9:45. >> Okay. >> And that meeting, probably 200 people saw us there. >> Okay. >> Um Larry had told me before his trip that he didn't want to do anything. He was going to go to the gym, >> Uh-huh. >> um come home, do a little bit of work on his laptop, and then he was going to watch golf. Something about Tiger Woods playing in Dubai, and then of course try to take a nap. >> Mhm. >> Um >> [clears throat] >> Poor guy went to bed early. Anyone stay awake at the Super Bowl? >> Right. You heard something that sounded like you said it dropped. >> dropped >> Now, did it >> it fell off the roof. >> Was it one noise? Was it several noises? >> one. It was a >> It sounded like something fell off the roof. >> Okay. >> And I kept on doing my sit-ups, and then I realized I was like, "Yeah, let me go check on him." And but it wasn't because of the noise. I just periodically we just check on each other. >> Mhm. Okay. >> And then what from the gym, what route did you take? >> Well, I didn't have four. >> Okay. >> My husband was laying in the foyer. >> Okay. >> It was It was right there where he was laying. He was laying. He hit on >> Okay. >> Was the back door open or shut? >> Do you mean open, not locked? >> Open, standing open? >> No, it was shut. >> According to Rebecca, the front door was open when she came back to check on Larry, which was unusual. Whoever murdered Larry must have left immediately, but that would eventually contradict what she told detectives about the firearms they kept in the house. >> As far as firearms in the house, do you own a gun, firearm? >> We did own a gun. >> Okay. >> I bought one very, very recently. >> Just You just have one gun in the house? >> Yes. >> Okay. Is it a handgun, is it shotgun, or rifle? >> Um it it's something that a handgun. I don't know a lot about it, but we bought it recently, and um it's registered, so I can't tell you the exact date. >> Is it registered to you or your husband? >> Don't quote me. I think Larry told me that it was legal for both of us to use, but only if we used it in the house. >> So if somebody came in, he would have been downstairs? >> He was downstairs, and um if somebody would have walked in, they wouldn't have immediately shot him. >> Uh-huh. >> They would have had to gone in a little bit, and he was at the end of the couch. They would have walked in the front door. >> If somebody had walked in and walked upstairs without seeing them. >> Could somebody have walked in and walked upstairs? >> I don't know if he didn't have absolutely. You think so? >> Yeah, cuz our staircase is right there. They could have walked right into the front door and but he would have heard them. >> He would have heard them come down the stairs. So the person that ransacked the place probably killed him first, you think? >> He put my dad in I'm sorry. There's no way that you could have heard that sound. He did [clears throat] the rage without Larry knowing in the way that he was laying. He must have heard somebody come in the door because it looks where he was laying like not maybe there's a conversation but he came into the foyer. There's a living room to come in the foyer unless he was crossing over the kitchen and >> I'm just trying to understand this. What type of person shoots somebody, make that noise and then take time to ransack a house? >> I don't know. [clears throat] I can't answer that. I have no idea what happened. And I didn't hear. >> And you didn't hear the car leave? >> No. >> How where was his car at in reference to where you were? >> My car is parked here. He parked here. >> In the dirt? >> Yeah, he parked Yeah, he gets to park in the dirt. I get the driveway. Sometimes he'll bring it around. >> He really tore the house up? Did he really tear your house up? >> Um I didn't look that well. >> things over, knocked over big items, kicked things over? >> Yeah, it looked like it the living room the stereo system had been knocked over. I can remember that. Drawers pulled out. >> But nothing was taken. The stereo was still there. The TV was there. >> from my antique store. We got three pieces that could be It's retirement for heaven's sake. >> And that was still there? >> There were paintings in there that were 17 to 25,000 dollars. Yeah, this person didn't know they were antiques. They didn't know they were paintings. Chairs were right above our bed. >> What were they looking for then? >> You're asking me questions that I can't answer. I don't know. We don't have money in our house. Um my expensive >> No. No, we don't. And my expensive jewelry is kept in a sewing box that is It's not It's It's an old-fashioned antique sewing box and unless you know that the middle opens sort of like a Chinese puzzle box. >> Mhm. How long have you been in that house? >> Let me think for a second. I think 4 years, but I I can't think straight and >> Did he Did he ever Did you ever sell drugs out of that house? >> No. >> No? >> Absolutely not. >> So somebody went and got looking for illegal drugs. >> No. No. No, I'm not I'm clean and sober. Because they um My husband helped me to get sober. And drugs were not a part of my story. Not that marijuana isn't a drug, but in my life I didn't do coke or crack or um heroin. I've never done any pills. Nothing like that. >> to figure out why somebody would spend that much time in your house. >> I don't know. I'm not sure what happened. My husband and I are clean. They were clean living people and I do charity work and he owns an honest living. He's been with the same company for 30 years. >> And your relationship, there's no infidelity? >> None. >> No, no, okay. >> None. None. [clears throat] We are madly in love with each other. We're still on our honeymoon. And if you have any questions from other people, they'll tell you that. >> Strangely, Rebecca's account doesn't line up with the murder [music] scene. Before she went to the gym, Larry had been in the parlor watching golf and waiting for the Super Bowl that night. If the gun was normally kept upstairs, how could a stranger have entered the house where Larry was sitting, gone upstairs without him noticing, opened the drawer, come back down, and shot him? With that uncertainty, detectives concluded that the only way this could have happened was if someone Larry knew had entered the house. >> No problems at all? >> Um, no marriage is perfect. I wasn't um >> Not in major any financial problems? >> Not at all. We're doing We're doing very well financially, but again, we don't go around telling people that. People knew and like I said, there was a little crow that would whisper. But we would just ignore them and then there are other people that knew me before I married Larry and they knew that that's not We brag about, you know, but you can walk in uh looking nice or dressed decently, you know, or carrying a decent handbag and people can assume. [clears throat] You know, people can see the outside of our house and assume. >> Did you guys have a security system in the house? >> No, and Officer Fowler asked me that. >> Any pets, dogs, cats, anything like that? >> No, no kids. We didn't want any of that. We just decided on Persian rugs instead. >> Neither of you have kids from any previous relationships? >> No, thank you, God. Nothing against you if you have kids. Larry never wanted children. Even before he ever met me. And at the age of 17, I turned to my mother and said, "You're not getting grandkids from me." It was a decision as as a matter of fact, when we dated, it was a big compatibility issue that once he said he didn't want kids, I was like, "Oh, my thing." So, no, we didn't want kids. We don't We'd make great baby sitters. >> You have an ex-husband and any ex-boyfriends around here, anything? Uh >> Uh ex-boyfriends? >> Anybody is jealous about you and him? >> Um I'm going to be honest with you. Uh before I met Larry 6 years ago, I was involved with a woman for a couple of years. Um she was in you know, we split up. We had been split up for 6 months, and then I met Larry at the gym. Um she wasn't crazy, you know, uh 3 years later when she found out that I was getting married, but nothing enough to hurt her or any of that. As a matter of fact, um within the last year, uh we've been we've become friends, and in the last year, I was invited to watch her graduate from Harley-Davidson school. I'm very close to her mother, as well. >> Before meeting Larry, Rebecca had been intimately involved with a woman named Linda. After meeting Larry, however, her relationship with Linda weakened. Detectives began looking into whether Linda was capable of causing harm to Larry. >> Linda would never She may not have been crazy about me getting married. I'm sure, you know, there was a few guys who weren't happy about it, either, but no nobody would do something like this. Okay. >> [clears throat] >> I didn't feel one, but I didn't know if I was feeling in the right place. >> Okay. Now >> I got out of the house. I went to my car, which was in the driveway. I opened up the door, and I called you guys. >> Okay. >> And then I got out of my car, and I was just hysterical, and I was just out pacing in driveway. I was like, "Somebody's got to get here now. If he's still alive, maybe you can help him." Um I'm trying to remember what else I said. >> What did they tell you on the phone? >> Try to calm down. What is your name? Help is [clears throat] on the way. Um Was he shot or was he stabbed? I told them that I didn't know. I couldn't tell. I just kept I don't know if they were really screaming. I just kept saying >> You just Let me just Let me check him. Let me just check his pulse. >> His eyes were open. I checked here. >> Was he face up or face down? >> He was face down. >> Face down? >> Blood >> [snorts] >> all around him. >> How was his head? Was his Was his head down or to the side? >> It was to the side and his eyes were open and that's why I kept thinking maybe he was alive and if I could get an ambulance out there fast enough, maybe we could save his life. >> Okay. Uh-huh. So, you checked his pulse? Did you >> I checked his neck. When I came back down the stairs, I checked his arm. And then I thought it was a good idea if I got out of the house and just called the police. >> Okay. You didn't try CPR, didn't try to revive him? >> No, I didn't. I didn't think you would have the guy to do or touch anything. I just >> What did you think happened? >> I wanted to know if my husband was still alive. >> Okay. >> I was >> Let me Let me just Let me try to understand you right. You came in the back door, your husband's laying there. >> Yes. >> You went to him first. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Screamed. >> Okay. Where's the nearest phone to your husband at that time? >> The nearest phone to my husband would have been in the living room, but our living room phone, the buttons haven't been working recently. >> Okay. >> So, my cell phone is sitting in my car. I would have had to have gone upstairs and either used his business line or used the landline that's upstairs. When I went upstairs, it wasn't to use this phone. It was to see what the hell had happened and if anybody else was still in my house. When I saw my husband's office and I saw my room had been ransacked, I ran back downstairs. I told Larry again. >> Okay. Was anything ransacked on the first floor? >> [sighs and gasps] >> Yes, the living room. The living room was was ransacked. The drawers had been pulled out. All of my self-help books had been pulled out. Um This just happened. I I'm having a hard time remembering, but I'll do the best I can. >> Mhm. >> Despite Rebecca telling detectives she hadn't dated anyone after meeting Larry, what they would eventually discover painted a disturbing picture of what had occurred. However, Larry had also planned the future very well. He held a high-value life insurance policy worth $1 million. You have a life insurance policy? >> You have a life insurance policy? Um I think Larry does, yes. >> For how much? >> I don't know. >> Who's the beneficiary? >> Um I think I am because I'm his wife. >> You're not sure? >> If you're not sure, he told me if anything ever happened to take that chip and give it either to Terry or if Terry had died by then, give it to David Boyd. Give it to a pocket and he knows exactly what to do. >> Is David Boyd with the company also? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> He's Larry's right-hand man. I know a little bit about our investments, but I never really I guess I was just lazy and I just Larry just took care of all that stuff. Spreadsheets and stuff like that. But he had it on he used to always tell me if anything ever happens just take his chip >> chip at? >> It's in It's in his desk. >> In the office up there? >> They got rid of the stuff. >> David Floyd, does he live in Rochester also? >> I'm trying to remember where David lives. >> Larry and Rebecca's prenuptial [music] agreement limited her to a total of $24,000 over 2 years in the event of a divorce. However, she stood to inherit the $1 million insurance payout along with Larry's considerable estate >> [music] >> if he died. Although there was no concrete confession from Rebecca after the interview, detectives tested her for gunshot residue, but the results came back negative. >> Did you kill your husband? >> No, I didn't. No, I didn't. >> Why should people believe you? >> Because the evidence, the lack of evidence, the lack of physical evidence. >> With no concrete evidence against her, the case went cold. During this time, Rebecca remained free and received a large portion of the insurance money. She also took ownership of the estate. Investigators later discovered that she used the payout to fund an extravagant [music] lifestyle and romantic relationships. However, by 2013, the Fenton home was nearly in foreclosure due to how poorly she had managed [music] the finances, and that's when this happened. Eventually, the Fenton house caught fire twice in 1 week in June 2013. Although the house burned down, detectives believe Rebecca or someone close to her was responsible for the fire. But the major breakthrough came 6 years later when a new detective picked up the case, re-examined Rebecca's life, and tracked down her former live-in [music] boyfriend Alfred Nolan. When they spoke with him, Alfred confessed that during a heated argument with Rebecca, she backed him into a kitchen corner, held a knife to his throat, and said, "I'll kill you like I killed Larry." Because Alfred was a felon with credibility issues, detectives decided to interview his nephew and the nephew's girlfriend. Both confirmed that Alfred had told them about Rebecca's threat after it happened. With Alfred's statement providing probable cause for an arrest, along with tight circumstantial evidence, Rebecca was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. She was eventually sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
