It was a routine, ordinary day on June 15th, 2023 at Laurel Lindale Road in Monroe Township, Ohio that suddenly turned into a full blood bath. Multiple 911 calls began flooding into the Claremont County Sheriff's Department. A man had gone on a killing spree, murdering his family. >> Just stay on primary. We're short and fast right now. Everyone can just switch. Chad, I'm going to kill the siren right here. >> When deputies arrived, what they didn't know was that they were about to face a deranged father whose self-hatred had risen above the level of a human being. He didn't care that the police were there and he didn't seem to move despite them calling out to him. Given the kind of danger the officers were about to enter, any mistake could have triggered several casualties. That's what they were trying to avoid. But they needed to find a way to approach the situation. SHOW ME YOUR HANDS NOW. STAND UP. Stand up. >> Moving. In the background, his wife could be heard crying that he had taken her life away. >> Can I roll over? I ain't going to hurt you. I ain't going I ain't going to hurt nobody. >> You got anything on you? >> No, I ain't got nothing, man. Phone, that's it. I ain't mad. I ain't I ain't nothing. >> Just make sure that dog don't come out. I don't think he'll bite you. Just don't reach for him and try to grab him and pet him. He won't bite you. >> What's going on, man? >> Nothing. Uh, can I stand up? It's kind of uncomfortable. >> I'm going to get you going. I ain't running away. You can do whatever you want with you. 63. Three bodies were found on the family's property. Two were found in front of the house, while one was found inside the bedroom. 7-year-old Clayton Dorman was shot four times while trying to flee. 4-year-old Hunter Dorman was shot four times at close range inside the bedroom, and 3-year-old Chase Dorman was shot one time outside. At the time, miraculously, one of the children still appeared to be breathing. >> Come on, buddy. Come on, buddy. Come on, buddy. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Please. Come on. Come on. and officers immediately began performing life-saving measures in a desperate attempt to keep him [music] alive. Tragically, after several attempts to save him, he eventually died from his gunshot wounds. Meanwhile, the mother of the children faced one of the most traumatic situations she never expected to experience. She was shot and wounded in her hand. Even the stepdaughter narrowly escaped, showing the extent to which Chad had gone to make sure his calculated plan was carried out. You the only one else inside the house. >> What? >> You the only one else inside the house? Sit down right here. >> My My daughter, she ran over to the fire department. >> Sit down. >> Uh, it's my stepdaughter. >> Put him in the cage. >> While investigators continued to piece the events together, it became increasingly clear that whatever pushed Chad to carry out such a horrific act against his children didn't start that day. In the meantime, detectives turned their attention to the neighbors to see if anyone had captured or heard the gunshots. While all of this was happening, >> did you recognize any of the people that you saw? >> I didn't. I I know who was over there, but I couldn't clearly tell you who it was. I couldn't see his face. >> Okay. Can you describe to me what he looked like, what he was wearing? >> Like I said, if you had a shirt on, it was like a tan or skin colored shirt, light colored uh khaki tan shirt. >> Did you see if he had hair? If he had what color hair he had? couldn't really see like his >> if he had anything on his head. >> Couldn't tell. >> The neighbors saw Chad chasing one of his kids across the road. A few moments later, they saw him carrying the child's dead body back to the house. But the moment that changed the whole picture came when investigators spoke with his wife and stepdaughter. They were able to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. Chad had returned home early from work. At one point, he picked up a Bible and began walking around the house with it. While doing so, he was mumbling, "Chad knows what's right." [music] He then began accessing the gun safe located in the master bedroom. His wife told him he was scaring her and that she didn't like what he was doing. Although she planned to call his parents, Chad told her he was just kidding and playing around. His wife later told investigators she didn't want him to be alone given his behavior. So, she and one of the boys stayed in the room with him. Chad then got up, retrieved a 22 caliber rifle from the gun safe, and shot one of his sons. As his wife called 911, and tried to help the injured boy while shielding the others, Chad pursued them and opened fire again. When his stepdaughter tried to escape with one of the boys in her arms, he ordered her to put the child down. She did, and he shot the boy. blind, but they need an LP. >> Can you get the wallet out of my back pocket? >> Shut up, dude. >> Yeah, the road to main side was [ __ ] easy. Yes, sir. I'm almost there. >> Yeah, I knew where and Captain Hold on. >> Chad was transported to the station for an interview. >> Did something make you upset? >> I wasn't upset. >> What? What uh were you feeling? [snorts] >> Betrayed. No, >> never >> happy. [clears throat] >> Did was was there's weight on your back about something recently? [clears throat] >> What happened today? >> We were living in hell. Like the world hell. So in the Bible you shoot shoot first second third well first your wife [clears throat] >> you didn't what >> what >> you didn't >> No I didn't get a life >> you didn't get to finish your life >> I I don't know >> why why is that >> I don't know who I >> [snorts] >> Mhm. >> When you say that, do you mean you just kind of lost your way? >> I'll wait for a lawyer. >> I I really don't know. Like, give me a couple days and let me talk [snorts] to a lawyer so that way I can get nice, good answers. >> Chad made a statement about killing his kids in the order the Bible commanded. But which order was he referring to? >> Do you have a lawyer? >> We have family lawyers. Who's that? [snorts] Is there somebody I could call? >> Keith Dorman. >> Is he related to you? [clears throat] >> Yes. >> Who's Keith to you? >> My dad. [snorts] >> All right. >> And Ruby Franklin. She's in a CIA. Car. >> Is she [clears throat] a lawyer? >> Huh? >> Is Ruby a lawyer? >> She's in a CIA. >> All right. I know. I heard you say that. I didn't know if maybe she was a CIA attorney or [snorts] um but you said your dad is a lawyer. >> Mhm. We have a family lawyer. >> All right. >> But you don't know who that is? >> No. [snorts] >> I don't think I've ever met you either. >> We've met. I remember you. You were the nice guy that lives on Virginia Drive. [snorts] >> Would you like a drink of water? [snorts] Virginia Drive. >> Yeah, I know. I talked to you there. Um, you had left your uh door open and you were worried about someone having a key to it and I checked it for you. [clears throat] >> Who would have had the key? >> Um, I think you just left it open. I don't think anyone had a key. >> Oh, you didn't check it. Did you lock it all up? >> Well, you were there. We talked. >> I mean, we didn't have to lock it up. You were at home. [snorts] >> Chad kept answering questions like someone who was drunk or suffering from memory loss. But the traumatic act of killing your own children isn't something Chad could ever escape. >> Is that how you were going to heaven? You shook your head. No. Well, then how are in heaven now? Yes. And how it happened? Fly. >> Like an angel. >> Like an angel. >> Is that where you deserve to be is in heaven? >> In a better place. >> Yes. >> And And so you your your idea was to make out got there in a good way, in a kind way. I'm not talking. [snorts] Yes. >> Maybe I'm hunting too young. >> When when you go hunting, do you have a particular gun that you use for hunting? [clears throat] >> No. Mustard. >> Describe it to me. Is it have a Woodstock? Is that a shotgun or a rifle? What do you want, >> dear? >> Yeah, we got some deer hunters here, too. Do you have more than one hunting gun or just one? Why are we talking? >> Cuz I'm [clears throat] trying to help you, Chad. >> Trying to help you. You're um upset right now. >> Inside Chad's home, detectives recovered several guns which he had been buying over the past several months. According to Chad, he bought them for the sole purpose of killing his children so that he wouldn't go to hell. >> Chad, I'm going to ask you something and I don't want to offend you, all right? But I need to ask this. Have you been using drugs? Street drugs? >> No drugs ever. >> Meth? [snorts] >> No. I've joked around about it, but never did meth. Never did any type of speed. Never did anything. >> All right. No ice. >> Nope. Nope. >> No coke. >> Nope. Nope. >> No fentanyl. >> Nope. Nope. [snorts] >> Just drink alcohol. >> Yep. Love beer. I haven't had a beer in a while. How should I drink? No, I haven't had a beer in a while. >> What's a while to you? [snorts] >> Like two days. >> All right. >> Usually I got at least drink three, four, six a night. You know, >> you got And again, I don't >> I don't have to, but like that's what I do. You know, I go home, mow grass, drink a couple cup beers. >> And there isn't anything wrong with that. But again, I don't >> do that. [snorts] I don't want to offend you, but do you have a drinking problem? >> I mean, I mow grass and drink, but I'm just asking, do you? >> I don't I don't think so. I think like by the weekends, I mean, yeah, you might drink seven, eight, you know, but on weekdays, you only drink two or three. You go work. >> Yeah. And you've never had a DUI, so I don't think that you have a drinking problem. >> No, I haven't had a DUI. >> Although he had no DUI arrests, he did have a prior history with law enforcement. In 2010, Chad was arrested and charged with choking his father, but the case was later dismissed, and he never went to jail for it. His other run-ins with law enforcement were just traffic violations. But despite this, if Chad was capable of choking his own father, the warning signs had been there, and nobody just noticed them. >> All right. So, yeah, I I mo, I drink, too. I get it. Um, but you've never, you know, dabbled in any street drugs or anything like that, you said. Do you take any prescription medications? >> Nope. >> Can you tell us a little bit about why you want to go to the little clinic? Was poisoning me for a while? >> When >> uh months ago was putting [ __ ] in my food. It was so bad I couldn't even eat because I would taste it and it was bad. Do you did that today? Because you seem like you're you're in and out of it. Like >> I don't know. Last night I couldn't sleep. After that, I couldn't sleep. I didn't drink a beer. >> Do you normally drink beer to help you relax and sleep? >> Yeah, sometimes. But no, but I feel like for the last eight months, I feel off. Nine months off. You're off. >> You seem a little off this this afternoon. You feel like you're in and out of thinking things. >> Yep. >> Yep. >> Your thoughts, do they do they bother you? >> Never listen to me. I kept over and over. I said, "I got bad thoughts. I got bad thoughts. Help me out. Take me to the doctor." You [clears throat] know, cuz I don't know. I don't know where I was going. I got I'd go to work and not even know I'm going to work. I kept I kept I kept calling mom. I kept calling dad. Kept calling everybody. I know my whole family to help me. Nobody would help me. Which >> nobody help me at all. Just take me somewhere. >> We're going to get you some help, Chad. That's why we're here. >> That's why we're here. I've asked and asked and asked I can't do everything. >> No, you can't. >> Can't do it all. >> I can't do it all. >> Do you make the money? >> So, you're you're working hard every day. You're making the money to pay the bills and you're just asking for some help and then you're not getting it. Don't make me mad. I do it all. I just do it. I don't care. I need to argue. I don't care who does it. It just needs done. All finished. Let's go. >> Is that why you were mad today? >> I wasn't mad >> cuz you couldn't get help. I'm >> not mad. >> Not mad at all. Nothing. Wasn't drinking. Here you go, sir. >> What happened? >> That's what I want to ask you. What happened today? I don't know. I wasn't there. >> I don't know what happened today. What happened? >> You tell me. >> I don't know. >> Well, when you came home from work, did you go and get your Mossberg? >> What? When you came home from work today, did you go to to your safe? I >> got foil tape. >> Say what? >> Foil tape. >> Yeah. Earlier today, you had to come home cuz you forgot tape. And then um later today, did you get in your safe? Do you keep the gun in your safe, chase? Can't get to it. >> Yes. So is that where it normally is to keep our hands does to that safe? >> Well, is it a key or a combination? >> Combination. So, it would help me and Mike if you would tell us what that combination is. Would you do that for me? >> What's your combination, Chad? >> Chad seemed unable to remember what he had done today. Was he under the influence of something or was he just pretending? Do you remember um getting any of those rifles today? >> No. >> No. >> Did you have any need for them today? Is there any reason why you would have needed them today? >> No. >> And the reason I'm asking is because earlier you told Mike and I that you wanted to send heaven. >> We're in heaven. Um, and so I'm that's why I'm asking, did you need that rifle to do that? Well, I don't I'm I'm confused. I don't know how you would to heaven if you didn't use your rifle. How would you have done that? [clears throat] I don't either. I'm only repeating what you told me. You told me to heaven and I'm trying to figure out. >> Yeah. I don't know >> why. >> I wasn't there. You got to help me, Chad. >> I wasn't there. >> You were there. You were definitely there, Chad. >> I was there. >> Yes, you were home. I wasn't there. >> Chad, you were there. >> I was working. >> You did work today, but you came home. >> Huh? I didn't go home. There ain't no way I went home. >> Well, tell me where you >> What time is it? >> It is now. >> What are we doing here? >> 7:10. >> What are we doing here? >> It's 7:10 at night. >> Yes. Chad, I want to know [clears throat] who shot. Yes. >> What are you talking about? >> And who shot these good? Who sent him to heaven? What are you talking about sending him to heaven? Well, that's what you said. >> What? You told us deserve to go to heaven. >> Yeah. All kids should go to heaven. >> I I agree. >> I agree too. >> Yeah. Okay. But deserve to go too. We're all God's children. So everybody deserves to go. >> Yeah. You'll be saved. >> So did you help today to get there? >> What? Peace. Is that your house? Yeah. Do you remember chasing through your yard? >> What? >> Do you remember chasing way through the the yard through the field there? A >> ne a neighbor told us that you were chasing through this field. That's why I printed that picture out. I wanted you to show me where you were. >> What are you talking about? >> What are you talking about? >> A neighbor told us that you were chasing through the field and you had a rifle. >> [snorts] >> I'm here. >> And were those thoughts? You said you felt like you were stuck in the Bible. >> Yeah. And did the Bible, did this store you were stuck in tell you to do something? >> I printed that off. I like I said, I was I thought I knew you, so I was trying to figure out where I knew you from. >> Where's that at? Where did I get that picture? Is that my license? >> Yes, sir. [clears throat] So that way [snorts] 168 lbs. [snorts] >> Have you ever had thoughts? I'm dead, ain't I? >> You're not. >> I'm in hell. >> You're not dead, Chad. You're not in hell. >> I'm in hell. >> You're talking to me and Mike. >> I'm just going to do this until the fire comes up and I'll just be [snorts] burning inside this room. >> Do you ever have thoughts of hurting other people? >> Is that something that you were going to talk to the doctor about? >> No. No. Never. I would never hurt anybody unless you hurt me, but I would never hurt anybody like shoot anybody or anything like that. I'll get knuckles to knuckles with you all day. >> Well, you've been in some some fights with your brother, right? I fight with my brothers. >> Oh, yeah. We got fist fights >> all the time, probably. >> Yeah. >> Me, too. >> Yeah. >> But you've never had any thoughts to hurt yourself? >> Yeah. What about other people? >> No. >> Even a fleeting thought, not something that you acted on, but just something that popped in your head and popped out. >> No. A cigarette. Can I smoke a cigarette? >> [clears throat] >> I have some cigarettes, but I can't give them to you just yet. We need to talk a little little bit more before I give you a cigarette. All right. >> How do you smoke? [clears throat] >> Well, it's up to you. If you want one, I'll give one to you here in a little bit, but not yet. We need to talk a little bit more. I need to find out what happened tonight. >> I I need to know got to heaven. >> I have no clue. I have no clue. Okay. >> Well, how do heaven who shot those? >> I don't know. Who? Why am I in here? Why am I out there? >> That's what we're trying to figure out. >> That's what I want to figure out. >> So, help me. Okay, let's walk out here and go find go find go find a [ __ ] that you told Mike and I that are in heaven in heaven. >> Dead. Let's >> Yes, they are dead. >> Chad, who shot the >> I don't know. >> You do know you're not helping me. I don't know. >> Well, who get to heaven? I mean, somebody who get to heaven. >> I never told you were dead. You told dead. >> How did you know that? >> You said somebody. >> That doesn't they're dead. >> So, they're alive. You told >> alive. >> Chad, you told dead. >> No, you said somebody. >> I did say that. >> I have never said they were dead. You dead. How do you know that? >> Cuz you they got shot >> after you told me in heaven. >> Got shot. >> Who? And don't give me, you know, I don't know. [ __ ] You know, tell me you shot him. >> That wasn't Chad. >> If it wasn't Chad, who was it? Cuz you know who it was. >> I don't know. But it wasn't Chad. >> Was it the bad version of Chad that you don't like? >> I don't know. >> The Chad that has problems with their thoughts? that Chad. >> Holy [ __ ] >> Holy shit's right. >> You take these off me. I will not hurt you guys whatsoever. >> No, >> I don't hurt nobody. >> No, I will never hurt anybody. I don't hurt anybody. >> Well, then why are dead? >> I have no clue. Do you love very much more than anything in the world? [snorts] >> Well, they want tell me if you Why would you if you Yes, you did. After several hours, detectives were fed up with his lies. All indications suggested Chad knew exactly what he had done, but was pretending he couldn't remember anything. >> You know, everything had [ __ ] happened. Listen to me, dude. Listen. No, I'm Listen. Listen, listen. I I've sat here and and and watched and and every time every time or he shows you a picture, you flip it over. You know what happened? >> I didn't flip my picture. I am is over. >> What? Help me understand what set you off tonight to make you just do the things that you've done. Help me understand. I can't help you if I don't know what the problem is. >> I don't know, dude. >> I have no clue. >> But something has had to have happened to be building this up for days or whatever how long you've been feeling like this and not sleeping. >> Well, something's something has triggered or something has set you off. Something traumatic has happened. >> No, nothing's traumatic has happened. >> So, have you struggled with mental illness? >> I don't know. >> Your whole life you don't know. >> I don't know. >> So, if you >> I don't even see me doing that. I can't even tell you that I did that. >> Let's Let's put that aside because you did. All right. You Now, the question is, what kind of man are you? Are you the kind of man that made a mistake and had a mental breakdown? And if that's you, then you need to we need to talk about it. >> I don't think I had a breakdown, dude. >> Then you did it on purpose. Then you shot on purpose. >> I'm a monster. >> If you didn't have a mental breakdown, then you're a monster. You had >> even if I had a breakdown, I still wouldn't do that. >> You stood over. >> What? >> The firemen saw that. The medics. I just want to understand what was going What happened, >> dude? I don't know. It was not me. >> It was you. It was you. You shot these. You're a monster. >> I'm not a monster. [ __ ] >> I'm not a monster. >> Well, I'm I thought that I believed that you weren't, but I'm start You won't talk to me about it. You You say you can't remember. That's [ __ ] You remember something, >> dude? I didn't do it. >> You got to remember getting the gun out of the safe. >> I didn't get the gun out of the safe. >> You're the only one with access to the safe. How the [ __ ] are you not the one that got the gun out of the safe? >> I did. >> You said your own words. Your DNA is the only DNA on that gun. Other than these three, >> you're scared. >> We're not here to talk about if you did it. We're here to talk about why. >> I don't know. >> We know you did it, but we have witness independent witnesses. >> I don't know. >> But I I >> I don't know why. >> I want to understand. >> I don't I I really don't. I want to understand too. I want to understand too. >> But something has happened that led up to this. >> Nothing. >> I had no clue, dude. >> So earlier in your interview, >> I don't know. >> Earlier in your interview, you said that you had been having some bad thoughts and that you wanted help. What were those bad thoughts? >> I was I was I was in hell. I'm in hell and and everything's just >> And you sent Heaven? What were the thoughts that were going through your mind when you were asking everybody for help and they wouldn't help you? What was what was going on? What were you thinking about? I don't know. >> But that's something you said. I didn't make that up. You said that. You said you were asking everybody for help. >> Yeah. >> And you've been having bad thoughts and somebody would had to help you, but nobody would. What kind of thoughts were those? Were you thinking about harming people at that point? Maybe not. >> Maybe just other people. >> No. No other people. Not at all. >> Then what kind of thoughts were you having? Were you thinking about harming yourself? No. >> Then what what else? >> What else could there be that you would need help with? >> I was in hell. We was in hell. We were all in hell. >> We're all in hell. >> Then what did you need help with? >> Cuz I was scared cuz we're all in hell. We are all in hell right now. >> Why wouldn't you try? >> Because there's only one way. You're always innocent. >> And what's that? What one way? >> What the [ __ ] >> What is the one way? >> You know, Chad, it's just we're talking, man. >> No to heaven. Was it to? >> Yeah. >> From what? >> Everything. We're in hell, dude. This is the fiery gates of [ __ ] hell. >> And Jesus is coming. You don't know who's going to get stuck in who's not. You were afraid that it was coming to an end. You want to make sure right now ask you not to >> what they beg you not want you to >> I don't know ask you >> I don't know no >> ask you to heaven no from you no run just lined up. >> Lined up. And who did you shoot first? >> I messed up. In order to get to heaven in order for it all to work, that' be 4 321. Then I would I would never shoot myself because if you shoot yourself, you get to help. When did you >> What order? >> First, >> I don't know. >> Second. >> Start with the youngest. And don't >> I don't know. >> The youngest. You said you lined them up. >> Where'd you line them up at? Or where did they line up at? >> I don't know. >> Well, see, now we're back to the I don't know [ __ ] We were we were having a good conversation and now we're back to the I don't know crap. >> Chad, >> I don't know. >> You just told us you locked up and you had an order and it has to be in a certain order. So what's that order? >> I don't know. >> So you you had figured out the order or whatever you did >> because >> then what happened? There's supposed to be >> from here. The interview audio was redacted. [music] But it was at this point that Chad told detectives in detail how he lined up his children and executed them one by one. When asked why, he referenced the Bible. >> Why? >> Because when when in the Bible it says something about It says something and you got to give up and then sacrifice when then when God the thing and says uh you you do this and then heaven and everything else and he and he test you and you have to do it. You you can't die. You have to do it. You can't stop. >> And you did. >> We're gone. Now I'm in hell. And he's going to come down and it's going to be a it's going to be a mess. And I feel so bad because I DON'T THINK I I didn't get it. I didn't get it. I should have been first and I would suffer fall into that >> which is why you run. >> Yes. >> Who was the youngest out? >> Yes. I don't know. Oh, ran. When did you come up with this plan? >> I did come up with it. >> When did it come upon you that this is what you were going to do? >> Probably last night because you were telling >> No, not last night. Well, then why were you acting differently towards >> it's kind of lay there? >> I mean, would that be? >> Well, no, it wasn't last night. >> Knows you well. Last night something was going to happen. Would it have been in the past? Is this why you can't sleep cuz you knew you had to do it. >> Yeah, but I was sick to my stomach. Sick to my stomach for forever. >> See, Chad, now I believe I believe that. Now we're talking. Now we're having a conversation. >> You're letting us understand what you what you were thinking. >> It's all through that Bible. And I trusted God. >> Where's that Bible now? >> I didn't read the Bible. Well, I I never read the Bible. I got told the story was in church. And then >> what church? >> Yeah. I don't know what church I went to. >> How long ago was it? >> Years. But I think my dad also told me the story. >> Did you take any notes anywhere? >> No. >> Have you wrote any of this down anywhere? >> No. >> I don't believe so. >> Just keep it inside of you thinking about it. >> Yeah. I believe you. I believe that you were so you were torn. [laughter] >> Did you ever order signs all over the [ __ ] place? People are walking like zombies. [laughter] It's going to be a nightmare down here. It's going to be [laughter] It's going to be a mess. And I'm not going to have my family anywhere near horn. >> Did you ever tell that this was going to happen? >> I [clears throat] don't know. >> Or that your about your feelings about it? >> No, I don't think so. Cuz you should never put that. [sighs and gasps] Never. That's a heavy burden, Chad. It's a heavy burden and I tried and I didn't see. >> Do you remember trying to stop you from shooting your >> Tell me about what happened. How why messed up? You didn't stop. You didn't really didn't really put up that much of a fight. >> Try and get the gun away from you. >> No, not really. Not really. That wasn't that that that wouldn't intended. What? Huh? It wasn't intend. Okay. >> My bad. How come you didn't sit down in the yard and you were standing on the porch? So I thought I did it in the wrong order. What is the order that you did? >> I don't know, but somebody's got to get it right. Somebody has to get it right, dude. >> [snorts] >> When you say you didn't do it in the right order, you're you mean um first you shot >> You say you did it in the wrong order. You should have shot first. >> Is that what you're saying? >> Yes. >> Okay. Do you know why you didn't? >> I don't know. Chad's motive for killing his children was to send them to heaven on time. He repeatedly told detectives he had to do it as a sacrifice to God based on what the Bible said. After speaking with Chad, the interview was wrapped up. Given the damage he had caused to his entire family by shooting his three children, Chad was charged with nine counts of aggravated murder, eight counts of kidnapping, [music] and four counts of felonious assault. During his court hearing, the detective took the stand to give details about what Chad had said regarding the Bible. >> He had made a comment that um the Bible says that you kill your firstborn, you kill your second born, you you kill your third born, but first you're supposed to kill your wife. I didn't kill my wife. So, I really thought that was a a very important comment that he had just made. And I was um I wanted him to repeat to me some of the things that he had said and I was asking him about that and he cut me off. Um he stopped me from talking and said um I'll just in one sentence he says I'll just wait for a lawyer. I really don't know like give me a couple days I'll talk to a lawyer and get nice good answers. He says that all in basically one breath. >> Because Chad had asked for a lawyer during the interview, the judge ruled that his rights had been violated and as a result his interview could no longer be used against him at trial. Chad initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but after several months, he withdrew that plea. He then accepted a plea deal on three counts of aggravated murder and two counts of felonious assault. During the emotional victim statement, Chad's stepdaughter, I am the person who I am today because of you. And no matter what anyone says, you raised me well and you gave me an amazing life. and I will forever be grateful for the memories and time you spent with me. Ever since what you've done, my life has been something I would never wish upon any family. It is the most heartbreaking and emotional thing anyone could go through. Chad, I miss you and I miss the boys dearly and nothing will ever be the same again because of you. Whenever something exciting happens, I always just want to tell you because I know you would be so proud of me. Softball to me isn't the same anymore because that was our sport and that was the boy sport. You made me an amazing ball player. And whenever I play softball, there isn't one game where I don't think about you. And whenever I get a good hit or I learn a new pitch, I always wish I could tell you because I know you would be so proud of me. And when good things like that happen, it sucks to look on the sideline and not see you be there. And for the boys not to be cheering me on like they always did. And Chad, I still work very hard on my grades. And I was on the honor roll this past year. And I know for a fact if you were there to see it, you would be so happy for me because my grades have always been so important to me. Another thing that has impacted me was every single holiday. Waking up on Christmas isn't the same anymore. I don't get excited. I don't even look forward to having presents because it's not the same. I don't get to wake up early and wake the boys up. I don't get to hide the elk. I don't get to do any of the fun stuff anymore because they're gone and you took their lives. And Chad, when you go to bed every single night, I want you to know that when you took those three boys' lives away, you took mine and you took my mom's. Chad, [snorts] I don't think you understand how hard it is to wake up every day and to see my friends and people around me have siblings and to hear them talk about what they did with their siblings that day or how much they enjoy having a brother because deep down that hurts me so badly and so emotionally because it hurts to know I will never get to experience another day with my three brothers or to make any memories anymore because their innocent lives were taken away so quickly and horribly by their own father. Their father who they loved unconditionally and who they trusted more than anything. It is so painful to see you here and in jail for the rest of your life because I have never thought in a million years you would do this to your own children and family. And still to this day, it doesn't feel real to me that they are gone and I will never get them back. But Chad, if I'm being honest, I don't think I will ever be able to hate you. Even in 30 years from now, I will not hate you because yes, you did something so horrific and traumatic to those boys. But I will forever hold on to the memories I had with you and the boys because those are all happy memories and those were the best times. And you gave me an amazing life and you were the best dad I could have ever asked for. I could write to you for days, but to end this off, always remember, I will never in a million years ever forgive you for what you have done and hope you pay for your actions like you deserve, but I will never hate you. >> The wife also gave a statement. >> On June 15th, 2023, my life was changed forever. My life was ripped away from me and destroyed. Since that day, I have spent every day grieving the loss of my three sweet, so very [snorts] little sons. I grieve the loss of Clayton, Hunter, and Chase every single day. And I grieve the life that they did not get to live. I no longer get to raise them and watch them grow. I miss each one of them so very much. I miss their laughter, silliness, love, and joy for life. Where there used to be so much laughter, happiness, noise of rowdy little boys, there is now silence and emptiness. I would do anything to push them on the swing. cover them up one more time and hear their little ways of saying I love you. All of it gone when I should have had so much more life left to live with them. I asked myself how a mother is supposed to carry on a life as a mom with one child left here on earth and three gone forever. I struggle every day with the will to get up or give up. Life for me is the true pain and suffering. I will never agree to think that any form of punishment could amount to the form of torture and suffering I have to endure each day. Such as seeing children and seeing siblings together as I watch Alexis be without her brothers and seeing families together as I no longer have mine. Having to live a life where I'm visiting the same places I once was with Clayton, Hunter, and Chase all together, traveling in the car, and no longer seeing them in the rearview mirror. This also includes our family home that holds so many memories that I cannot let go of. But now it's just a devastating to face again. So empty and quiet. I was injured that day, fighting with every ounce of my body to just make it stop. I struggle every day knowing I was not successful in doing so. And now I have to live with this and wonder what more I could have done to save them. This tragedy has affected me mentally and physically. I replay the events of that day over and over. I get sick at the thought. Every day I have to learn how to cope and live with the trauma I now have. I have anger, frustration, and so much sadness. I had plans and dreams to watch my small boys grow up and become young men and to always be there for them as their mom and to be the best grandma I could be. My husband I trusted with everything made a decision that has left my life forever changed. I lost my husband and my children to this horrible crime. [snorts] The law will never replace my life and give me back what I have lost. I will hold the life I had and lived so close to my heart forever. Grief will never go away as it is all the love that is left with no place to go. And my love for Clayton, Hunter, and Chase will never go away. and I will never let them be forgotten. I quote, "When I get to where I'm going, I'll only have happy tears. Until then, I will end my days with nothing but sadness." >> Thank you, Judge. >> Thank you. Well, there's nothing that I can add to the most compelling uh statements of Alexis and Lord Norman. Those were two of the most compelling statements I've ever heard. With that said, Mr. Norman, as to count one, I'll impose a prison sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. No fine will be imposed. As count two, uh it'll be a life prison term without the chance of uh parole. and count three, it'll be life in prison without the possibility of parole. These three uh counts and these three sentences will be served uh consecutively with one another. As to count uh 18, uh it'll be an 8-year minimum sentence. As to count 20, it'll be an 8-year minimum sentence. They will be served consecutively with one another for a total of 16 years as a minimum sentence. The maximum sentence would be 20 years. So the total sentence on those two are uh 16 to 20 years. They're served consecutively with the sentences in counts one, two, and three. U all aggravated circumstances have already been dismissed. The firearm specifications will uh be dismissed. You will forfeit uh the firearm uh that was used in this case. It'll be forfeited to the sheriff's office for uh destruction and it must be destroyed. Um there is no appeal uh for this sentence. So you will serve uh the rest of your life uh in prison. Uh we'll order uh judgment for court costs. You have been held uh in the county jail since June 15th. So there's 415 days that you serve in jail up to this point in time. That will be credited towards the uh the life without uh parole. Uh there's no restitution and no fines will be imposed. Anything further on behalf of the state, Mr. Co? >> Mayor, >> Mr. Myers, Mr. Haynes, anything further? >> No, thank you. >> Covered everything satisfactorily. Chad was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
