Hi, I um would like to report a theft. I'm one of the managers at Gabe's. She stole a cart full of things in a in a laundry bag. >> What kind of car? >> Uh Jeep Renegade. >> What color? >> Uh neon. >> I only went back inside for my wallet. That's what she told police. Then they opened the car and the store tags told a different story. >> [sighs and gasps] >> A woman is stopped on suspicion of stealing a cart of goods from a store. She says she only went back in for her wallet, but the officers find store tags in her car and her story starts to unravel. >> TURN YOUR VEHICLE OFF. PUT YOUR KEYS OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. Just stay right there then. All right. >> my purse. >> Hands where I can see them everybody. All righty. All right. Ma'am, this is the city of Beavercreek. You're being stopped on suspicion of theft. >> This is a Terry stop. The manager's report matching the Jeep and plate gives officers reasonable suspicion. Enough to briefly detain her, but not yet an arrest. >> I didn't steal anything. >> I just love kids. >> Exactly, okay. Keep your hands where I can see them. >> Yes. >> All righty. What's the little one doing? What's his name? >> his iPad. His name's Elijah. >> Elijah? >> I don't have his skates. >> Oh, that's okay, buddy. All righty. So, I'm going to have you step out of the vehicle for me, please. All righty. What's your name? >> His name's Elijah. >> What's your name? >> Oh, Charity. >> Charity? All right, Charity. All right. Step back here for me. >> And I went back cuz I lost my wallet. >> Okay. >> Um and then I went to Five Below. >> Okay, I got you. All righty. >> Yeah, I didn't even go back there. >> Okay, so what do you mean you went back there? >> I I left there. >> Okay. >> Lost my wallet. >> Yeah. >> Looking for my wallet. Then I went to Kroger. >> Okay. >> So, I uh went through the whole car, went back to Gabe's looking for my wallet, and then I went to Five Below and I found it at Five Below. >> You did this. >> No, but I'm sorry. It's okay. >> It's okay. So, listen up. So, like I said, they they said that that you had stolen some items from them. >> No. >> And some kind of laundry bag or laundry basket. >> No, I don't have no laundry basket. >> No laundry bag, no laundry basket? Well, they gave this exact Jeep with this plate number with your exact description. So, I don't know why they would be >> back in there to get my wallet. Maybe they thought I took a wallet. >> Okay. Where was your wallet? >> It was next It was in Five Below, but I went back in there and I came right back out. Maybe they thought >> Did you have merchandise when you walked in? Did you Did you have merch >> You just had your purse? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Did you buy anything anywhere? >> Huh? >> Did you buy anything anywhere? >> At Five Below. >> At Five Below? >> Yeah. >> And you did Did you bring that merchandise into Gabe's with you? >> No. >> Okay. >> No. >> If you would like to >> Please. >> I'll I'll go up to Gabe's and see what what they're saying. >> Okay. >> So, you're saying I'm sorry you you're saying that you walked into Gabe's and >> Yeah, I went back into Gabe's, looked for my wallet, and then I came back out, and maybe they thought since I walked in and came right back out with him, maybe they thought I took something. >> When you went in to look for your wallet, did you have anything with you? >> My purse. He had >> Do you have items from Gabe's? >> Huh? >> Do you have items >> Below. >> I see I see Gabe's >> Five Below. >> I see Gabe's uh tags right here in the vehicle. >> That's old stuff. >> That's old stuff? >> That's old stuff. That goes to my niece and nephew. >> Okay. >> That's stuff from weeks ago. >> That's from weeks ago? >> I don't see them in for another couple weeks cuz I have Okay, I was supposed to have surgery Friday. Kettering is all shut down. >> Yes. >> Okay, so I can't go till next Friday, so we had to reschedule the visit. I have a feeding tube. >> Okay. I got you. I just wanted to make sure it looked like >> You want Do you want to see it? >> Yeah. Can you just turn around real quick? You don't have to show me that. But, I'm just going to pat you down, okay? >> Yeah. >> You Actually, Officer Stevens is going to pat you down. That seems a little suspicious, you know what I'm >> I know, but I swear I went I really went back in there looking for my wallet and I came right back out. So, that has to be what it is. I have a feeding tube. >> Charity, whose vehicle is this? >> It's my husband, Raymond. >> Your husband, Raymond's. Okay. Charity, as as of right now, you are being detained based on suspicion of theft. I know that you have your story, but we still have to make sure everything's good, okay? >> You can make sure everything's good. >> I know. I'm just letting you know. Would you care if I looked at some of these items in here? >> I can. >> She agrees to the search. That's consent, so no warrant is needed. >> [clears throat] >> Anything in plain view, like those store tags, can now be used against her. >> All right, I just wanted to double-check. What's up, buddy? >> You remember that Thomas the Tank Engine? >> Thomas the >> I searched my whole car. It looks a mess cuz I lost my wallet. And they can even tell you or her that I went back in there looking for my wallet. >> Okay. But, you like I'm saying, here, will you step back just for a second. So, that >> stuff goes to my niece and nephew. >> Okay. Do you have Do you have any way to prove that? Do you have any like uh receipts or anything like that for me? >> Sir, I couldn't have walked out with all this stuff. >> I mean, I don't know. I don't know if you could or not. I don't know why they would call us. >> It's mostly all from Five Below. >> Okay. Well, I mean, there's Gabe stuff on here and Gabe stuff on here. >> stuff. That's been in my car. It goes to my niece and nephew. I haven't been able to go over there. >> I hope you're not lying to me. >> I'm not lying to you. I How could I walk out with that much stuff, sir? >> I mean, it's it's happened before. >> No. No. No. You can even get a hold of Five Below. >> Okay. And if I mean, if you were to have taken it and it's all less than a thousand dollars and you don't have any warrants or wants for your arrest or anything like that, you wouldn't you'd be just getting a ticket and have to go to court. So, that'd be there's a couple of ifs there, but are you a hundred percent certain that you didn't take a single thing? Because Gabe's going to tell us. >> us? Okay, they can tell you. >> Okay. All right, I just It's just weird. They normally don't call us. >> I know, but I've been in there I went back in there. Maybe they thought I took something. Not unless he grabbed something. He does have ADHD. >> Okay. >> And I have been caught at Target with him leaving with stuff. >> Okay. >> And I've gotten in trouble for it before. >> Okay. >> I didn't take it. He likes to grab things and take it. >> so um your driver's license is suspended, but you have driving privileges and your privileges. >> I'm on my way to Kroger to get Well, I had to stop and get him his iPad and then on my Kroger to get my prescriptions. >> And where are you coming from? >> Gabe's and our Five Below. >> From Five Below. What we have Five Below's for? >> To get some things for him. Since school's out and his ADHD is so bad, I got him a couple things. >> What does it specifically say on your driving privileges that you're allowed to do? >> That I'm allowed to take care of my kids and wherever I got to go for my kids is fine, work, and doctors. >> So, okay. And is this your child, then? >> Yes, it is. >> Okay, I got you. >> So, she has video. >> She is She's suspended with privileges. She said she doesn't have her >> I have privileges. Just >> Right. Right. But she's trying to get a hold of somebody to see what privileges are allowed. >> send a picture. It's in the mail slot. Can I take my first >> Let's just hold off. Yeah, just give us 1 second. >> She named that trash can. She named these two wooden lanterns. Um she named some other things, but like I said, I I mean, there's so much stuff in here. I would have to We'd have to unpack all this to see it all. But it's definitely a theft. Did she come in with anything? So, they have you pushing out a cart. >> Pushing out a cart? >> Uh-huh. >> Just going to be straight with us. >> I Okay, I had the trash can. >> Thank you. Okay, what else do >> But the Gabe stuff, seriously, was for my niece and nephew. >> Okay, what about the >> The baskets, yes. >> and stuff. >> The baskets and lantern, that's it. >> Okay. >> Other stuff. >> That's all I needed to know. >> Yes, they're saying there's more stuff. They've named other stuff that's in here from today. >> That was That was it. The rest I got from Five Below. I had those baskets, >> Is there anything >> Trash can. Gabe's? Anything with a Gabe's? >> All the clothes were from weeks ago. The only thing I took >> Right. It's It's really hard to know. >> It is in the in the trash can. And I had the baskets. >> Why don't you show me what you took? Cuz it's really hard for me to believe anything you're saying since you've already lied to me, so that's unfortunate, but >> I'm keeping it straight. >> Okay. Well, >> the baskets, the trash can, the lantern. >> Yeah, the lanterns. >> sheets >> She just named the same items the manager reported. That match creates probable cause, the legal line between detention and arrest. >> [sighs and gasps] >> Her earlier denial also hurts her credibility. >> Okay. >> And the rest is clothes. >> Everything in >> Everything else from Five Below. >> What about everything in this >> I've No. I've searching for my wallet. That's why everything looks like this. >> So, so everything in this >> This is from Five Below. This stuff is from Gabe's. This >> All that's from Gabe's? >> Yes. >> Okay, here. Give it to me. >> Yes. >> So, anything with a Gabe's sticker or a Gabe's tag I can assume is from Gabe's. Is that correct for today? >> No, not today. The only thing today is the trash can, the baskets, the lantern, and the sheets. >> I wish you would have been just honest with me from the get-go. That would have been great. >> these? >> She said that she took this. >> Is that a rock, bro? Here. No, it's not. Throw that. You don't want to eat that, buddy. >> Everything else is from Five Below. >> Okay. >> You can call them. >> Well, obviously there's a theft. You're under arrest. You understand that, right? You're under arrest for theft. Just given what we have here from what you've already explained to us. >> I have epilepsy and I need my seizure meds. >> Just hold on. We're We're just going to load all this crap up. Listen, you're going to come up with us. We're going to go back up to Gabe's. We're going to determine what came from Gabe's or not. Anything that didn't come from Gabe's, then we will figure it out from there. >> It says on it what says Five Below and what says Gabe's. >> Yes, I understand that, but are some clothing items that say Gabe's as well. >> Yes. >> Right. So, >> Here's the problem. He's lied to us since we got here. >> I lied to you one time. >> No, you lied to us a big time. You said nothing was taken. Turn around, put your hands behind your back. >> So, did you take any clothes today at all? Yes or no? Be straight. >> I did not take any clothes. >> No clothes today? >> The only clothes I have is from Five Below. >> There's Gabe's clothes in this pile. >> Yes, I got that weeks ago. >> Okay. >> Let's see Gabe's name. >> Clearly, our aren't getting the the hint and trying to use a child to do it is it's sad that you would do that with a kid. And your your intentions to do that with a child is simply so you wouldn't go to jail. >> No, I did not. >> Yes, it is. This isn't my first day. A good person to be teaching your child. Very good example. >> at all. >> You're a great example. >> No, that's far from the truth. >> Okay, well, when's the last time you stole? >> Huh? >> When was the last time you stole? >> I don't >> Yeah, I know you don't. >> Police say she took a cart of store items. She claims she only came back for her wallet. In court, her own admission on camera may decide the case. Police say she took the cart and her own words on camera made it hard to walk back. >> [sighs] >> Whether it ends in a fine or worse, the footage speaks for itself.
