And I have but one question. >> She just made a statement that her dad's on the way. >> Uh ma'am. Are there any kids in the house? >> No. >> I mean, we saw the kids toys in one bedroom. We want to make sure everybody was okay. >> My kids are not home. >> Okay, they're not home. Okay. Are they with your parents? >> Yeah, my dad's going to be here soon. >> Okay. >> He's aware of everything. >> Okay. So, you can be out here. Just keep an eye on her and make sure you know, nothing happens. If dad shows up, we got to make sure we check his hands and his back pocket. >> Open stuff and it off. You got prime minister >> I just heard we did the whole house. >> Do maybe more than the house. You want to keep everybody away. >> True. >> A man arrives at the scene drawing officers' attention. >> Yes, sir. >> Chloe Starks. >> Okay, well right now it's an active investigation, sir. So, you can if you want to wait, you can wait on Rattlesnake Road there, all right? >> I'll stop. >> I'll have somebody come talk to you in just a minute. >> Sir, do you know where our District 3 office is? >> Yes, I do. >> Can you go stand by there? We'll need your phone number, though. >> Okay. I can just stand by there, man. >> That'll work. If not, the address is right here. 4775 Pace Patriot Boulevard, okay? >> Okay. >> And there's my car. Okay? >> I'll just sit here. >> I I It's an active investigation. >> Investigators tried to get an initial statement from Chloe at the scene. >> Name? >> I'm sorry. >> Chloe. >> Chloe, I'm Captain Jones with the Sheriff's Office. >> Yes. >> Um before I ask you anything, I want to make sure you understand your rights, okay? You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. question. Well, >> You said during car Is there any what? >> You can decide to answer questions or you can decide to stop at any Understand that? Okay. And basically, I just want to find out what happened. I'm I'm going to step over to the other side, so I can so I can talk across the car at you, okay? Hang on 1 second. >> So, he was threatening you? >> Yeah. >> Okay. He was holding the handgun? >> Yeah. >> Okay. And then what happened? So, when when the when the argument started, what did the argument start about? >> We got home and we were arguing about the car and stuff. >> So, you all got home Where did Where did you go? >> In here. In here. >> I understand, but I mean where at in the house? >> I let the dogs out. They don't like him. I let the dogs out. >> So, you went let the dogs out when he was there? And then at some point you're saying he went and got the gun and brought it out? Or did you get the gun? So, at the time that you actually shot him, what was he doing and what were you doing? >> He was >> Okay, what was he doing when you shot him? >> Like he was choking me. >> So, then he was actually strangling you? >> No, he was choking me. He was choking me. >> Then he was coming at you with the same gun? >> Yeah. >> And then that's when you shot him? >> Yeah. >> What was the separation of it then? >> He was like He was choking >> Okay. Can you lift your head up a little bit for me? Okay. So, you don't remember the exact sequence of events? >> I just remember that He grabbed me like >> Okay. Did he actually put his hands on your neck or did he just have to approach her? Are you all married? And you all own this house together? >> Yes. >> You understand that we have to um obviously this crime scene will be processed in the apartment. Do you have any issue with our processing of the house? All right. >> Yes. >> Yes. Yes. Yes. All right, sit back down. >> The investigation started with her father. Now, the door closes behind her. She's alone with detectives and the questions are about to get much harder. They've already heard one side of the story. Now, they want hers. But, will her story hold up under pressure? Or will the questions expose something she doesn't want them to find? >> Hey. I'm just talking to the cops and um I don't have a whole lot of answers. Um there's not a whole lot I can tell you right now as well. >> Is she dead or alive? >> I can't say. >> You can't say if he said her alive? >> Not right now, no. >> Is he at a hospital? >> No. >> [sighs] >> So, you're telling me he's dead? >> I have not been in the house. I've only been outside of the house. >> He's still in the house? >> My understanding. >> Oh, [ __ ] >> The case begins with officers responding to a chaotic scene where Chloe Davidson's husband, Doug, has been shot inside the home. What makes the opening especially interesting is that the investigators don't yet know whether they're dealing with a straightforward domestic shooting or something more complicated. Chloe is taken into custody while officers secure the scene. And almost immediately small details begin to matter: the locked door, the firearm, the positioning of the people involved, and Chloe's behavior while officers are trying to establish what happened. At this stage, there is no full interrogation yet, but psychologically, this is where the foundation of the case is being created. Investigators are collecting observations before they ever begin challenging her story. Chloe's movements and short answers are being documented while officers simultaneously work the crime scene. The tension comes from one unanswered question. What exactly happened inside that house? And as officers begin separating people and securing the scene, another important development appears. Chloe's father arrives. His eventual account will become one of the first independent versions of what Chloe allegedly told someone immediately after the shooting. >> [sighs] >> Yeah. She going to jail? >> That I don't know yet. We haven't sat down and talked to her yet. Um, our understanding is she called and talked to you prior to and then of course our cabinet's was there was a disturbance prior to all this happening. Um, didn't know if you be willing to tell us what y'all's phone conversation was about. >> Oh, I'd like to. But I but I can't figure There's parts I can't figure out. It was really short. It was really short. She said, "Dad, I need you to come over. Said, "Dad, I need you to come over. Uh Doug and I got in a fight. He started choking me. He got the gun. He got his gun. I thought he was going to kill me. And I shot him." >> [clears throat] >> Okay. >> I said, "You what?" He said, "I shot Doug." And I could hear in the background uh uh police radio or EMS or somebody. >> Okay. >> Somebody I could hear in the background. So, cuz my first thought was, "Well, call 911, you know, don't call me. You don't call 911." But, I could hear the radios in the background, so there's no need to say that because 911 had obviously been called. >> Okay. >> And I said, "Okay, I'm on my way." And that was the conversation. >> Okay. Um so, I >> So, all she told me was that Doug he's Doug Doug choked me. And we got in a fight. Doug was choking me. I thought he was going to kill me. Then he or he got his gun. I thought he was going to kill me. And I [clears throat] shot him. >> Okay. >> Was there a struggle over the gun? I mean, y'all I >> I have no idea. >> No, and and we don't know yet, either. >> I don't know nothing. >> Um do you know where they were at prior to all of this happening? >> know. They They brought the kids over. >> About what time was that? >> Uh it was earlier than what I thought it would be. I want to say 6:30-ish. >> Okay. >> It was after dark. At 6:30, y'all would even notice his his truck there. >> Um a truck there. >> And how [clears throat] the hell did they get there? Uh She called me at 1:00 this morning or this afternoon. And Dad Uh, he watch uh Is Mom working tomorrow? I said, "No." Cuz they're supposed to come over for dinner. >> Okay. >> I told him and Doug and the family. >> Mhm. >> And I said, "No, there isn't Her mom works on Thanksgiving or works at home." >> Oh, okay. >> from home. >> Yeah. >> So, whatever And and [clears throat] just like she worked Uh, she works some holidays. Thanksgiving and so if she worked, she couldn't come. >> Mhm. >> You know, [clears throat] they couldn't have anybody over cuz if you know, it's in the background and she So Uh, anyway, [clears throat] uh I said, "No." Uh, she's not working. And uh she goes, "Well, we were thinking about taking the uh the kids to uh uh downtown. But Doug and I want to go out." I'm like, "Okay. We all need some me time." >> Mhm. >> And so if she was asking if we wanted to Sure, bring them on over. And I guess it was 6:30. She called shortly before I get my phone. I look at the phone call. I'll tell you cuz she called when she left the house. >> Okay. >> It's in truck. But anyway, she called when she left the house and told they were on the way. Uh, they brought her car and Doug's car. And they left her car and took Doug's truck. Uh >> So, they showed up in two separate vehicles and then >> correct. >> Okay, and then gotten the truck. >> Now, the investigation takes an important turn. Instead of relying only on what Chloe told, officers at the scene, detectives interview her father. His account gives investigators something extremely valuable, what Chloe allegedly told him immediately after the shooting. According to her father, Chloe's message was remarkably direct. She said Doug had choked her, that he got his gun, that she believed he was going to kill her, and that she shot him. That account is significant because it establishes the basic self-defense narrative before detectives have conducted a formal interrogation with Chloe. But there is another interesting detail. Her father says he could hear police or emergency personnel in the background during the call. That means the conversation happened while the scene was already active, giving investigators another potential reference point for reconstructing the timeline. The detectives then begin expanding the questioning into the couple's movements earlier that evening when the children were dropped off, which vehicles were used, and when Chloe and Doug left. The investigation is quietly moving from what did she say happened? toward does everything surrounding her story make sense? >> Doug dropped off his two of the kids. Where's Kai? Oh, Kai's with a friend spending the night with a friend. I don't know what friend, but Kai's three kids. Kai 13, >> Okay. >> Kai 13, Dawson 11, and Jack three. >> Okay. >> So, he uh [clears throat] Anyway, where's Kai? Kai's spending the night with a friend. And oh boy, this is really All right, and anyway, uh uh Cuz I asked her to the day, I was like, "Well, what Well, sure, what are your plans?" So, I mean, that is uh >> [clears throat] >> She said Uber because I'm very much against >> Mhm. >> Do you Do you know anything about her background? >> No, I don't even have her name. >> You don't know her name? >> Don't even know her name. >> Oh, >> Showed up on Saturday. >> Goodness. Uh how deep are you going to be in this? >> Uh probably pretty deep. >> Okay. >> I'm I'm not the primary detective on it, but I'm going to be working side with them. >> Well, [clears throat] before I get back to that. Anyway, uh she uh um they brought the kids over and she said, uh you know, Uber, you know. And uh And uh anyway, she they dropped the kids off and like I said, about 6:30. I can tell you closer by looking at my phone. See what time she called me when they left the house. And [clears throat] uh and that that was it. Uh they dropped the kids off and uh as they were leaving, I shook Doug's hand as he walked up. So, his hands went in and left. And >> [clears throat] >> uh she I said, uh any plans for the night? Uh uh she said, Uber. And uh you know, I mean, uh bad night to be going out. >> Mhm. >> Bad night for them to be drinking. Bad night for them to be That's bad for them to be drinking. >> Have they been having issues? >> Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Yes, they have. They've been having issues. >> Did they seem okay when they dropped off the kids or did it seem like it it's just kind of like I don't know. Uh >> No, they were fine. They were they were It's been good. They have had issues. I'll tell you what the issues Uh I guess they have had issues. And uh It was good to see them Christmas really get along really good. >> Okay. >> Uh they've they've had uh Oh, Lord, can I tell you stories. Um >> [clears throat] >> How long have they been together? >> I want to say 11 years. No, no, no, 12. 12, 12 and 1/2 years. >> Okay. >> Uh they've been married I think 7 8 years. >> Mhm. >> Uh they had They had uh Dawson who's 11. He was 3 years old when they got married. >> Okay. >> Uh Uh he has a Kai from a previous marriage but Chloe's adopted him. >> So, Kai is >> Chloe's >> Doug's >> Doug's not not She is his legal mother. She has adopted him. >> Okay. >> Stephanie was Uh Stephanie Surda was is Kai's That's his Uh first wife. ex-wife and Kai's mother. I mean uh >> But your daughter has adopted Kai. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> She has. Yeah, she got >> At this point, the interview becomes much broader. Detectives are no longer simply asking about the shooting. They are building a psychological and relationship profile of Chloe and Doug. Her father describes their long relationship, their children, and Chloe's ambitions to become a law enforcement officer. That detail becomes particularly interesting because it gives investigators context about her familiarity with policing, investigations, and the professional world she had been trying to enter. Her father portrays Chloe as someone who becomes deeply committed to whatever she pursues. He describes her photography career, her role caring for Kai during a serious illness, and her determination to eventually enter law enforcement. From an interrogation analysis perspective, this section isn't about catching Chloe in a contradiction yet. It's about building context. The detectives are allowing her father to speak at length, giving him room to reveal information without aggressive confrontation. The longer he talks, the more details investigators obtain about Chloe's personality, ambitions, family life, and relationship with Doug. That background becomes important because the investigation is gradually moving toward the question of what could happen inside a relationship that outwardly appeared stable. >> Kind of Kind of I mean I've got something to jack. Mhm. >> [clears throat] >> So, where do I start? >> Well, let me um let me get your name first cuz I I didn't get that earlier. What's your first name? >> get that. >> Okay. >> [clears throat] >> This was so amazing. It's a miracle 30 years. >> That's wow. Congratulations. >> Thank you. >> Go ahead. >> If you want to know more about Chloe, look in the scanner road scanner being county sheriff's department application database. She's got an application there for deputy. >> Okay. Um do you know when she put that application in? >> Two weeks ago. Week ago. Week two weeks ago. Week ago. Yeah, 10 days somewhere around there. >> And um >> All right. Chloe Chloe and Doug Oh. They got married. Chloe graduated from high school in 2008. Uh She hooked up with Doug about 2 months longer after that. Um Doug was separated from Stephanie. Uh I'm not sure if his divorce was final at the time. Um They got together. And Chloe Um [clears throat and cough] She wanted to be a deputy. A sheriff deputy sheriff. Her What she wants to do is what you're doing right now. That's that's her been her goal in life. When she was in high school, she spent more time in school resource officers office than anywhere. >> Mhm. >> She got with Doug. And It wasn't too long after that. Doug wasn't happy with it. I wasn't having any part of her uh being a sheriff assistant because it's a deputy because it's too many uh it's a male-dominated >> Mhm. >> type of environment. He wouldn't have any part of that. He didn't like the idea of it. Uh but still that was what Chloe wanted to do. Uh she got pregnant and had Dawson. [clears throat] And Um And then uh she started a photography business specializing in uh uh uh baby foreign newborn photography. >> Mhm. >> Uh matter of fact, she did real well with it there for a minute. Uh I went to several symposiums. One of her one of her pictures took uh uh fourth place in Parenting Magazine. So wow. >> Yeah, she she was good. She was a phenomenal She was a I mean uh, she was good. She was really good. Uh, that's Flo's personality is uh, she's She She jumps on something she She dives into it 100% >> Mhm. >> and puts all into it and usually does quite well with it. Uh, she started that photography business and then Kai uh, >> [clears throat] >> Kai came down with uh, uh, leukemia. >> Mhm. >> And he had leukemia I want to say about 3 years. And she basically had to back off the photography uh, because of Kai. She was his full-time caregiver. >> Mhm. >> And a matter of fact, he at one point he was at Sacred Heart. Uh, they pronounced him terminal. They couldn't do anything more for him. He got what they what they Oh, whatever forget the acronym, but it's where the capillaries in the liver because of the chemotherapy uh, [clears throat] closed up and the blood no longer flows through the liver. >> Got you. >> Uh, and he bloated up uh, and they pronounced him terminal, but there was a experimental drug uh, that was being going through a clinical trials in Jacksonville. Uh, the children's hospital in uh, Jacksonville. So, he was uh, uh, life-flighted over there with a 30% chance of it working. I thought he's [clears throat] going to come home in a box. 3 weeks later he came home. Couple years later he went into remission. And he's now 13 and Kai I want to say was five at the time. Well, and [clears throat] anyway uh not long after that, she she got pregnant with Jack. And she had Jack 3 years ago. And then her biological clock started ticking. >> Mhm. >> And she still all along wanted to be a deputy. >> What does that mean? >> What you are. You want to be an investigator. >> Mhm. >> And she uh uh she had to put that off because of Jack. >> The father's description of Chloe becomes increasingly detailed. But underneath the personal stories is a psychological portrait. He describes someone who doesn't easily give up. He recounts Chloe caring for Kai during his illness, raising her children, recovering from an ACL injury, continuing her training, and eventually entering law enforcement training. That persistence matters because later in the interview, her father describes a very different kind of pressure, Chloe's difficulties during her law enforcement training. Investigators are learning about someone who had invested significant effort into becoming a deputy. Her father says that despite injuries, illness, physical therapy, and other obstacles, she continued pursuing the goal. The significance isn't that these events prove anything about the shooting. They don't. Instead, they establish the emotional and personal stakes surrounding Chloe's identity and future. The interview is effectively creating a psychological profile before returning to the marriage itself, and that transition becomes increasingly important as her father's account moves toward conflict inside the relationship and problems involving Doug. >> And I would say [clears throat] uh about 30, when she was about 30. Uh she finally decided that, you know, when she was in her 30s, finally, the hell with it, I'm doing it. You like it or not, that's what I want to do. And it's now or never. So, when she enrolled over at Georgetown and August 16th last year. Um and what you want wasn't long after that. It was I mean, you know, it was August 16th. September, October, she blew out her knee in training. Blew out her knee. She tore an ACL and something else. Uh she had to have knee surgery. And uh and when I think in November, she had uh uh she had knee surgery. Uh and of course, she couldn't do her physical training that that with as she was recovering. Uh >> [clears throat] >> but she continued on in school. And uh in January uh this year, uh the boys came down with COVID and there she was uh going through hell. And she got picked up, I want to say in December. November just before the surgery. Just before everything went south, she got picked up as a cadet as a cadet at the academy. Uh and as cadet three. And uh uh Anyway, uh she uh I mean, [clears throat] God help her. I mean, November, I mean, January, she had uh uh COVID, two kids having COVID. She was going to school, going to physical therapy two days a week. Uh anybody else would have quit. But not Chloe. She didn't quit. You know, like, it's like, I can't do this no more. You know, legs in a brace going to school. You know, it's just She stuck with it. Uh she uh in April. End of April. Uh but she didn't She walked with her class, but she had to go back to George Stone for her physical training. Uh >> [clears throat] >> and in June, end of June, 1st of July, she finished. >> Okay. >> Uh The day after she completed George Stone, she drove to Gainesville and got uh and and took her state exam. >> Mhm. >> On Friday, on Monday, she started at uh What do they call it? FTAP. >> Okay. >> Escambia County's >> Mhm. >> training. >> Is she still employed with the Oh, oh, okay. Sorry. >> We're We'll get through this. Uh >> [clears throat] >> and then she started uh uh uh She went through the FTAP and my dates escape me, but uh somewhere in uh July Uh there was [clears throat] like 5 weeks of FTAP, 4 weeks. And then she went into uh FTO. Uh phase one, phase two. Uh she went through phase two and everything was uh She did okay. And I had a couple >> This section introduces another major source of conflict in Chloe's life, her law enforcement training. Her father describes what he believes was unfair treatment during the field training process. He recalls negative evaluations, disagreements with trainers, and eventually an ultimatum that Chloe could either resign or be terminated. From a psychological standpoint, this section is important because the father repeatedly frames Chloe as someone who was fighting against circumstances rather than surrendering to them. But investigators aren't necessarily accepting that interpretation as fact. They're listening. That distinction matters. A skilled interviewer can learn a great deal simply by allowing a witness to construct their own narrative. The father's emotional investment becomes increasingly visible as he describes what he believes happened to his daughter professionally. Eventually, the conversation shifts back toward Doug. And that is where the interview begins approaching the central question, what was actually happening inside the marriage before the shooting? >> problems and she did take a week of remedial. >> Mhm. >> Uh then she went to phase three, they gave her her own car. Uh she was fired twice six. And uh uh And then she got put with a Deputy Graves. I've got a lot of problem with the way this word is Skippy County. Day one, day one, first day of FTO he wrote the uh uh uh what do you call that? The uh the the daily report. >> Okay. >> I guess you have your positives and negatives or whatever. For positives, he put she showed up in uniform. And it went downhill from there. >> Okay. >> Uh they had a investigate there was a a murderer over in uh uh Montclair. Mayfair, not Montclair. Mayfair. That she was allowed to shoot It was on the news where they had to >> They I so many shootings. >> [laughter] >> Anyway, she was a legal one. She was She She was the first deputy on on scene. And I was there when a guy died and everything and uh uh or actually he was still alive. We went to the hospital. But anyway, uh uh she thought she'd done real well with it, but uh uh Uh anyway, second week second week or the second day she was there the uh the deputy and her FTO asked her if she had had uh brain trauma. And you know, it's like if you had a traumatic brain injury or something. And she said, "No." He said, "Well, you sure are stupid." And uh it just went kept on going like that. And I told the boy, I said, "You know, the probably the best thing you can do is just back out of this one because oh it was 2 weeks into it cuz it was a 6-week uh FTO. 2 weeks into it, she was uh one of the officers had some kind of thing in her Well, no, she was at another scene and one of the officers had a uh some kind [clears throat] of flashlight carrier on his vest and he asked she asked where he got it cuz she'd like to have one. And uh her FTO told her, "Don't bother." He said, "Don't bother. You're not going to need it." And after [clears throat] I heard that one, it's like, "I've been I've spent 30 years in Marine Corps. I know what how the things work. When you want to get credit for somebody, you build your building blocks and you make it happen. >> [clears throat] >> You know, whether it's personal or professional." Anyway, it went on few weeks into it, she went to her Her FTO wasn't there and uh went with another FTO. The FTO said she was fine. As a matter of fact, they were good uh DOR. And uh the next day the FTO who was with came in and made him change it to a derogatory DOR. And I was like, "Chloe, this ain't going to work. You know, you ain't going to make it." And anyway she uh She said, "No, you know, Sergeant Miller, who was in charge of training her, said he'll you know, she'll go put me with somebody else." And it got to the end and a week before the end of the training the uh Sergeant Deputy Graves, who was her FTO, told her, "I'm I'm going to recommend you be terminated." And uh she talked to Sergeant Miller and Sergeant Miller said, "No, I'm going to put you with uh uh remediate you and put you with somebody else." Which he did on Thanksgiving. Uh she told me about it when they were they were over Thanksgiving and uh uh the following uh week is when she finished. But anyway, uh uh the FTO did the the phase three and uh uh she talked to Sergeant Miller and and anyway, she went to be to meet with her new FTO uh for the remediation and uh Sergeant Miller called and said, "You you you need to resign or be terminated." >> Okay. >> And uh apparently what had happened was Graves, Sergeant Miller, who was going to remediate her uh went Graves went over his head and talked to his boss. >> Got you. >> The lieutenant the lieutenant said, "Get rid of her." And that was the end of that. >> Okay. >> Uh but so Chloe uh has training uh in law enforcement. >> Mhm. What does um Doug do? >> Doug is He is a lineman for Gulf Power. >> Okay. >> Oh, when they first met he was a power plant operator at the Cris plant. And when Florida Power and Light bought out the Cris Gulf Power a couple of years ago uh they converted uh uh Cris plant uh to a natural gas from a coal to coal took 200 employees, natural gas to uh 20 something. So, 100 almost 200 people had to uh walk away, get paid severance or whatever. Uh so, he went from a level three whatever power plant operator uh to being an apprentice lineman. Uh >> This is one of the most revealing sections of the father's interview because the discussion finally moves directly into the couple's relationship problems. At first, he describes Doug as a good husband, but then begins explaining that Doug could be possessive and that Chloe strongly disliked cheating. The conversation becomes more complicated when the father describes incidents involving Doug, Chloe's work schedule, and another woman named Kim. According to his account, Chloe discovered communications between Doug and Kim and became suspicious. She reportedly investigated phone and financial records, but according to her father, never found definitive proof of an affair. This creates an important psychological tension. There is a difference between suspicion and evidence, and the father repeatedly emphasizes that distinction. Yet, the emotional impact appears to have been significant. Chloe allegedly became convinced enough to consider ending the relationship despite the lack of what her father considered concrete proof. For investigators, this creates another possible motive for conflict while simultaneously raising a critical question. Was the shooting connected to a long-running relationship dispute or was it an isolated >> Okay, I can have 50 something dollars an hour or 26 dollars an hour. >> Yeah. >> It hurt, but at least he still had a job when >> Yeah. >> he actually backed up. And that's probably I want to say been two years. >> Okay. >> Uh >> [clears throat] >> But uh Anyway. Uh >> What um >> So, you want to know about their recent problems. >> Mhm. >> Doug I always thought was a really good husband. >> Okay. >> I need [clears throat] a cigarette. >> Do you have some out in the car? >> Yes, ma'am. >> Okay. >> I need a cigarette. >> Yeah. >> Sit here and I'll tell you. Well, uh better with a smoke. That's why I need a cigarette. >> What all there? >> Doug's dead. Uh Sorry, [ __ ] Uh All right. Well, me and Doug Well, me and Doug I didn't catch my own stride I could see Doug but it's >> Oh, yeah. And I don't have a key that's why I got to prop it up. >> Well, me and Doug we always been a I thought a good couple and they've never really had issues. Chloe, Doug has always been very possessive of Chloe. >> Okay. >> Uh but like I told Doug and I told him several times, I said, "Chloe is she despises any cheaters. She despises cheaters. She you know, uh worst thing in her book is a cheater." >> Okay. >> And uh I I told Doug many times, he said, "Well, you're worried about that." I was like, "Listen, Doug, one thing you ain't got to worry about is Chloe cheating on you. That's one thing you ain't got to worry about. That will never happen." And Well, anyway, uh when Chloe has been somewhat naive and didn't have her guard up, well, on Halloween night of This is two other things with Grace. Fantastic. Halloween night, Chloe's favorite Chloe's favorite uh holiday has always been Halloween. As a as a child, that was her favorite more than anything. And >> [clears throat] >> uh anyway, she was supposed to get off at uh at 4:00. And Graves kept her and he took a call that they didn't need to take and she didn't get home till 9:00. >> Oh. >> Did that on purpose. Same thing on Jack's birthday, on the 20th of November. He did the same thing. She was wanting to get off to go home. No, he took a call he didn't need to take. So, she didn't get home till 9:00. Jack was already asleep by the time she got home. Sorry son of a but anyway >> [clears throat] >> That's just spiteful. You don't do that to people. >> Mhm. >> But anyway, uh uh The week before Halloween Halloween on a Monday Doug She got He called and he was at a party and uh he said the kids and she had to go get the kids. And uh anyway, she went and got them. And uh when it was Saturday, this is on Saturday night, he didn't come home till 4:00 in the morning. >> Mhm. >> Well uh anyway, uh Flash forward 2 days, uh Halloween night when Chloe finally got off, she got home and he wasn't there. He was uh out trick-or-treating with the kids somewhere else. And somewhere else was around the corner here somewhere, close to here. Uh and apparently uh he was with Jack's aunt, some woman named Kim. I don't know >> This is arguably the most important section of the father's interview. He explains that Chloe had been investigating Doug's communications and describes Doug as having what he calls a very explosive temper. Then he reveals something particularly striking about the night of the shooting. According to him, before Chloe left earlier that night, she allegedly said she was going to go out and try not to go to jail. That statement takes on a very different meaning after learning that Doug would later be shot. The father also explains his concern about the couple drinking together. His description is that when both were drinking, arguments could escalate. Investigators now have several pieces of information that potentially connect together. Relationship tension, jealousy, or suspicion, alcohol, a history of arguments, Doug's alleged temper, and Chloe's eventual claim that she believed she was going to be killed. But the father himself ultimately returns to one thing he believes matters most, Chloe's immediate statement that she thought Doug was going to kill her. For investigators, this doesn't automatically prove self-defense. It provides context, and context is precisely what they need before they confront Chloe with the evidence themselves. >> Kim, what's Kim's last name? And I don't know the exact relation. I know that it's It's a It's Aunt Kim. But anyway, Chloe had never uh uh suspected anything. But anyway, when he finally came home, she was pretty upset because uh he didn't come home until about 11:00 on Halloween night. Uh and when Jack and Carson Kai was over was at a friend's. And uh anyway, she got a hold of this phone, which she had never done before. But let's just say there had been a lot of communication between Doug and Kim. >> And Kim is no relation to you guys? >> No, I don't know who she is. I couldn't pick her out of a crowd of two. >> Okay. >> I am. I don't know who she is. And uh Doug's She is Kai's aunt. Now, I don't think that it's Stephanie's sister, but I think there's a marriage in there somewhere. A second aunt or something, but I I don't know. Uh But uh I but Chloe did a lot of investigating. Um looking at bank records, phone records. And uh there was never They hid their issues. I mean and and and I talked I talked to her. Uh and she was 100% She called one day. And Doug I was at Common Sense Republican structure of the base hospital. And she said she was kicking Doug out. And uh Uh I'm like you cuz I I told her, you know, it's it's uh It's through it all. There was never any proof. >> Yes. >> Never any minutes. Never any proof. Never any real there there that they had anything really going other than a lot of communication. >> Okay. >> Uh as far as him actually having an affair, having sex, if you will. >> Yeah. >> There's no grounds for that. There was never no there there. No proof. No nothing. And Chloe uh she was trying to put it all to rest and just you know, they had had their arguments. >> Mhm. >> But uh uh Uh and Doug if Doug has a hair trigger temper. I mean a hair temper hair trigger temper. Very very bad temper. [clears throat] Uh He's explosive. All he needs is He's a can of gasoline and all he needs a match. >> Okay. >> And he's got that kind of You know the type of person. >> Oh >> yeah. >> And he is one of those personalities. >> Give me 1 second. This is my sergeant. Yes, sir. Yeah. Okay. That works. Sounds good. I'll just um confirm the phone number and uh I can give them a call. >> Okay. >> Okie dokie. Bye. >> You need to go? >> I do. Um >> Anyway, Chloe's words as she left tonight, she said at least she left. So, I said, "Y'all got a plan?" And she goes, "Yeah, Uber." I'd rather try not to go to jail. I I was fearful because when them two get to drinking, and I've told them this many times. It's okay. I told Douglas, I told her this. They when one of them is drinking, the other one can keep things calm. When they both get to drinking, that's when problems ensues. Okay. So, y'all both >> And with the current, you know, Aunt Kim situation, >> Yeah, explosive. >> Got you. >> I was sure something happened in Oh, they came over Thanksgiving in a tizzy. Because they had gone to a party over at Kim's grand- over at Kai's grandparents, and Kim was there. And Chloe was there, and Kim was talking to Jack, and Chloe didn't like it. And anyway, they they ended up at my house uh in a pretty heated argument. Ruined our Thanksgiving, didn't it? >> Yeah. >> But uh But anyway, and I told them both, you know, I said, "She needs to They should have gone to marriage counseling." And uh [clears throat] >> [snorts] >> Uh Doug's dead, isn't he? What are they going to do with Chloe? >> I have no idea yet. >> Any idea when I can come get her? Or I can't? Is she going to jail? >> That I don't know yet. Um I can give you a call. Um >> After nearly 47 minutes of investigation, the story reaches its most important psychological shift. Chloe is transported to the station, where detectives prepare to question her about the shooting. But instead of immediately providing a detailed account, she says something dramatically different from the confident narrative previously reported by her father. She says she is extremely drunk and doesn't remember what happened. That creates an immediate tension in the investigation. Earlier, investigators had a version in which Chloe reportedly explained that Doug choked her, retrieved his gun, threatened her, and was shot because she believed he was going to kill her. Now, when detectives prepare to formally question her, she claims she cannot remember the events. The investigator does not push forward with an interrogation after that response. Instead, the interaction moves toward custody and medical physical checks. This creates one of the biggest unresolved psychological questions in the entire case. If Chloe could reportedly explain the shooting shortly after it happened, why does she later say she doesn't remember what happened? That discrepancy does not by itself establish deception, intoxication, stress, trauma, memory disruption, or other factors can affect recall. But from an investigative perspective, it is a significant change in the narrative. The case ultimately ends with Chloe being charged and continuing to maintain that she acted in self-defense. The final determination, according to the provided transcript, is left to the court. >> Afterwards and kind of update you a little bit um on what's going to which way it ends up going. Um obviously, I'm not over there at the house. The lead detective is over there right now. That's why I got the phone call. Um >> [clears throat] >> So, he's going to have a whole lot more information than I do right now. >> I understand. >> Uh but I can update you >> Oh god. >> and let you know >> Kids. Ah. >> Let me let me grab your wallet and drink real quick. >> Yeah, I got it. But do you remember? Ah. >> Oh, that's probably That's probably it. >> Good rabbit. >> Ah. Ah. >> But um I'll just to make sure >> Hold on. Uh Do me that one thing. >> Mhm. >> I got this. Chloe has been developed with me. And I don't know how y'all treat it now or what y'all do with it. But I would take great credence in the words that Chloe said to me. >> Okay. >> I thought he was going to kill me. And what do you do? >> Yeah. >> What do you do? >> And just to make sure I have the right phone number, it's 850 >> Yes, ma'am. Will you please call me? >> I will. I'll give you a call. >> Have a seat right there for me. >> Good morning. >> Okay. >> Now she's been brought to the station. Detectives have already heard her story from her father. But when it's finally time for Chloe to explain what happened herself, she says she was too drunk to remember. So which story are detectives about to hear? And what happens when they start asking questions? >> All right. So before we get started, I know this has already been read to you. What I'm trying to do is >> I didn't sign anything. Okay. >> All right. >> I'm sorry. Honestly, I'm so drunk right now. I don't even remember what happened. Okay. I know that he said he was the one to kill me and >> I was behind him. >> Okay. Let me um go grab the deputy real quick and um we will get you up there to the jail or back to your house, okay? All right. Actually, I got the cuffs with me. Can you stand up for me? Put your hands behind your back. If If put them together like you're praying, it'll be a little more comfortable. You can have a seat. Let me make sure um you've got the car seat out there, okay? >> I'll be standing right outside the store if you need anything from me though, okay? >> Um so real quick, can I just check your mouth real fast? Um so we'll go ahead and get you out there to the deputy's car, okay? And lift.
