On September 30th, 2025, a deputy with the Polk County Sheriff's Office spotted two bikers without lights on their bike and decided to stop and identify them. >> Both of you stop. You want to come back here? Well, she was riding with no lights on. >> I was riding my bike. I was on that bike. >> I just watched both of you over there. Neither of you had a light on. >> This bike has all these lights on it. >> Okay. Well, they were just turned on as we drove down the street. So, you were riding down that street with no lights on. >> No, we were not. >> I was on his bike. >> We just switched and >> We just switched bikes. >> All right. You want to come back down here? >> I am. >> This is harassment. You guys stopped me already for no no light a while back and took my pocket knife and never even gave it back. >> Okay. That wasn't me. I don't know anything about that. You have an ID on you? What was that? >> What do you need my information for? >> Cuz you were riding without a light on your bike. >> I was on his bike. And I had a light on >> All right. So, you I saw you without lights on your bike, so I need you to give me your ID. >> Um I don't have one. >> You don't have an ID? Okay. That's fine. What's your name? >> Uh what? >> What's your name? >> Benjamin. >> Yeah, I heard you. >> No, I was just kidding. I was just wondering like what >> What's your last name? >> What crime have I committed? >> You're riding on a street without lights on your bike, which is which is illegal. >> I have lights. >> I saw both of you >> I was on his bike. >> Okay. We're not going to argue about that right now. I need your name. >> Okay, I'm sorry, but I'm not committing a crime. >> You you were committing a crime by not having a light on your bike. >> I have a light on my bike. >> We both have lights. I turned three lights on and I >> Where's the light on your bike? >> I can't even turn the light on in here because there's no button. I have to turn it on like >> All right. Where's the light on your bike? >> Right here. >> Your phone is not a light on your bike. >> How is that not a light on my bike? >> There needs to be a light attached to your bike. There's a red light in the rear, which you just turned on. So, I watched you do it. >> Okay, hold >> And you have no white light in the front. >> I can >> And riding around with your phone in your hand does not count. >> But when you passed us, I was riding that bike. And we just switched at the stop sign. >> What's your last name, ma'am? >> Uh I mean, I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Like, I >> Okay. If you don't want to give me your name, I can take you to jail for interference. >> How am I interfering? >> Cuz you're not giving me your name. >> I mean >> You're interfering with us. >> I don't know >> Really? Okay. >> Like >> 21, you start me a second. >> bike? >> Both non-compliant. >> How am I non-compliant? >> You're not giving me your name. >> Uh What reason do you have to >> The light on your bike. I'm not going to ask again. >> A light on my bike that is >> give me your name or you can go in handcuffs. >> I don't understand. >> At this point, the deputy has made his position very clear. He says he observed the riders without the required light and is now asking for identification. The rider, however, keeps challenging the reason for the stop and insists that he did nothing wrong. This is where a routine traffic encounter can quickly escalate. There is a major difference between disagreeing with an officer and refusing a lawful instruction, and the consequences can become serious when an officer believes someone is intentionally interfering. The rider is essentially asking, "What crime did I commit?" while the deputy is focused on the equipment violation he says he personally witnessed. Would you have simply provided your name and dealt with the ticket afterward? >> Uh non-emergent for down. >> All right. >> Where do you guys live at? >> I just live right down the road. >> On Where What street do you live on? >> This street. >> What street is this? Okay. What house number? Okay. How about you, miss? Where do you live at? >> The same place. >> Okay. Are you guys dating? Are you husband and wife or >> Dating. >> Okay. I got you. How long you guys been dating for? >> About 4 years. >> Okay. >> You don't have another light? >> I don't. I got this one. And I got the back light, too. >> No, I have a light on the rear light right here. I'm right. Damn. Is that uh That thing that you got right there, is that uh >> Yeah, it's a white light. >> I mean, it's a >> even that flashlight that's affixed on the front of the bike is good. You have a white light in front and a red one in the back, just like you're supposed to have on that bike. >> I would like. >> bike. >> Yeah, she was on this bike. >> Okay. >> And we switched it sometime. >> All right. So, did you have an ID on you or no? >> That's what I'm looking for. >> Okay. Do either of you guys have any weapons on you or anything like that? No? Okay. >> This is the second time I've been stopped for not having a light and they had a light both times. >> Well, you wouldn't get stopped if you didn't have a light. >> Well, I got stopped Yeah, I got stopped right over on like right across 14th on Aurora. >> Okay. >> He said that I didn't have no light on when I had my flashlight on the front and a and I had a wagon on the back that had a light that was flashing, so. >> Uh >> And then he took my pocket knife and never even gave it back. >> Okay. I'm sorry that happened. Yeah, I don't I don't know anything about that, but >> Can't I just uh put his other light on mine and then put this back on my back? >> We can do that once we're done here, but I need you to identify yourself to me. So, that's what we're doing now. >> Well, I mean I just don't understand what >> So, >> what I've done wrong. Like I >> If you're riding on wrong way with the bike. >> He was riding it. >> Okay. I'm not going to argue with you about that. >> Okay. >> So, are you willing to identify yourself to me or not? >> Uh Why I don't understand why I have to >> You're riding without a light. I've explained this to you multiple times now. >> I was not on this bike. He was on this bike, so >> I drove past you while you were both at the stop sign and saw you both on these bikes. >> I was on that bike. Was I not? >> She was. >> I saw you on this bike. >> You did not see me on this bike. >> I sure did. >> Okay, that was maybe when you turned around, but when you went by the first time I was on that bike. >> So, you just decided to randomly switch people like switch people on bikes. >> I was riding that bike >> [clears throat] >> because he was trying to to make sure that the back tire wasn't like going to the bearings weren't going to come out. Or whatever, and so he was riding it just to get a feel for it. >> What's your name? >> I don't get it. >> What's your last name? >> What? Like what if I done wrong? >> If you don't want to identify yourself, you're going to go to jail. >> Why? I haven't committed any crime. >> All right, step off the bike. Step off the bike. >> Hey, why are you taking me to jail? >> Step off the bike. >> I will identify myself. I will identify myself. I don't understand what I've done wrong, though. Yeah. >> Here comes the turning point. After repeatedly asking for identification, the deputy tells the rider that refusing to identify himself could result in jail. The rider still insists that he has not committed a crime and only begins cooperating once the situation reaches the point of arrest. From a practical standpoint, this is where the argument over the bicycle light becomes secondary. The immediate issue is now the alleged interference and refusal to identify. Notice how quickly the tone changes once handcuffs come out. The rider suddenly wants to provide his information, but the deputy has already decided to proceed. Do you think complying earlier would have prevented the arrest or had the situation already gone too far? >> No. >> Uh you can take my stuff. Why? Are you guys going to We are recording this or something? >> My body cam's recording right now. >> Okay. Your body cam. >> Is your phone? >> Can you get it to him or what? >> Nope. >> Why? >> It's going with you. >> Okay. Where am I going? >> Jail. >> Oh, okay. >> You were asked several times to identify yourself and you refused to do so. So >> ask him to identify himself? >> Because he had lights on his bike and you didn't. >> on that bicycle. >> Damn, there's a penny on the ground. Oh, well. I'm sorry, but I don't know what I've done wrong. >> You have a little swing down here by chance for a search? All right. Go ahead and step back here. >> Things are like backwards. I'm hurt. Ow. I'm hurt. Sorry. >> Would you be willing to identify yourself to us? >> Yeah. >> Okay. What's your name? What are you guys doing tonight? You just >> We were going to get a donut from the [ __ ] food truck. >> Okay. >> Where do you all stay at? >> Huh? Where do you stay at? >> I'm already pulled over sitting on the road. It's already that she got guns >> I don't know. She is She wasn't the one riding the bike though. I was. Yeah, she did. She She was not the one riding the bike. At the stop sign we switched. After he already passed us. >> I don't know. I wasn't here. >> But I was just trying to fight that off and she said the background was like felt like it was going to fall off so She said the background had fallen off. >> She said it felt like it was going to fall off. >> Oh, so when she was riding the bike, she said >> Yeah, and so I got on the bike. >> So, she wasn't >> Before before you saw us, though. >> Huh? >> You just emerged in the >> Right, that's my point. >> But when he saw us, I was on the bike. >> When you saw him when you saw him >> Okay, well, where when did you see us? >> When I drove by you on 10th, stopped at the stop sign without the lights on, and then the second you saw me turn around, I see you both turn lights on and drive down this way? >> No, just like down the road there. >> Okay. Good. >> You dropped the phone cord that he had. Right there. >> Oh, that one? You want me to give that to him as well? >> his. >> Okay. Oops. Yeah, you're free to go, man. She wanted to give you the house keys as well, so there's all that stuff. You got any questions for us before you get out of here? >> Can I take that stuff so that I can give it to her tomorrow? >> No, it's got to go to dad. He's going with her. >> Mhm. All right. >> Is that your phone? >> Yeah, the second I whipped around on Madison to see him, they started riding down here. They both flicked their lights on on their bike. And then he claims that we we switched bikes. >> Interesting. >> Yeah, I was just going Did you look at this bag already? >> The deputy now explains exactly what he says happened before the stop. According to him, he drove past the couple and saw them at the stop sign without the lights illuminated. Then, after he turned around, he says he watched both bicycles lights come on as they started moving away. The couple offers a different explanation, saying they had switched bicycles and were simply testing one because of a problem with the rear wheel. That contradiction is important because the entire encounter began with the officer's observation of the bicycles. At this stage, the body cam captures two competing versions of the same moment. The question for viewers is simple. Whose explanation sounds more convincing based on what we've heard so far? >> Did you have your ID? >> No. >> Spelling out something? >> Um, uh, yeah. >> [ __ ] those turn around lights. >> I don't know. >> What is this stuff? Glasses, screws. >> Yeah, that's weird. Who was Do you remember the name of the NCO? >> Yeah, it was >> I know. >> It's not her. I think her ID's in here. Cuz she started digging around for it and then she started giving me a hard time again. Well, I don't understand why why we're doing this. It's like, all right, I'm I'm over it. You're going. >> chips >> You want something? >> 480283084 >> I got a knife. >> Oh yeah, for sure. >> I used to think he was the problem. >> I mean both of them were. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Is there anything? >> There's your girl. >> She's got a bunch of like random tools and stuff like that, but I'm not seeing anything too terribly nefarious. Yeah. I wonder if he had the stuff on him. >> Could be. >> Yeah. Yeah. It's worth it. It's on. >> All right. >> Here we go, she's wanted. >> Yep. >> And she's already on paper for warrants and stuff like that, so >> I don't think we're going to >> Well, unless it's on her. >> Oh, true. Yep. She's in my backseat already. >> Can I look in her backpack, okay? >> I know. >> It's a really good thing >> I'm >> she didn't pass on a longer cuz there's nothing in her bag and >> Yeah. >> on paper for that. It's a good idea, so >> She ain't going to pass her chance or anything like that, you know what I mean? She's a good girl. >> But I just don't want the car to be around a lot longer than that. >> I mean, my camera's been rolling the whole time, so >> She got a passenger? >> Uh passenger. I can get it. >> So, here's where the entire encounter ends. According to the final information in the video, the woman was transported to the Polk County Jail, where she was booked and charged with interference with official acts and violation of probation. The male rider, meanwhile, was released after the officers completed their investigation. The key takeaway is that the encounter began with a bicycle light violation, but escalated because of the repeated dispute over identification and compliance. Whatever viewers think about the initial stop, the body cam shows how quickly a disagreement can turn into an arrest when communication breaks down. What do you think? Should she have simply identified herself, or do you believe the situation was handled too aggressively?
